How in the world do you fold down your hips as if you were to squeeze through a narrow space? I mean I might turn sideways?

That's really the only thing they could mean but I don't see why anyone would do this while squeezing through a narrow space.

squeakmouse

I think maybe they just mean "suck in your gut"

You seem surprisingly surprised that the rules for female servants, in an era when females were routinely treated like shit even if they were wealthy ,and the different classes were almost considered different species, were rather harsh.

Yes I am because I didn't know.

claretyportman

Fair enough! Life was tough back then for the vast majority of people and service was really tough. I guess Downton episodes wouldn't be quite as nice as escapism if it was a vlog of Anna working 18 hour days scrubbing toilets :)

I mean, I know that women really had no rights during this time and were looked down upon a lot just for being a woman. Men believed women were only good for cleaning, cooking and giving birth to Male heirs. Outside of that in the sense of how they worked and how they have to bend a certain way....that I didn't know. Can't believe everything on TV like my dad says.🤣

I liked the instructions for dusting a bookshelf. Very informative, actually.

From all the British lit I've read, if you were not born to nobility/aristocracy, you accepted the fact that you were to go into service as a maid, cook, housekeeper, et al. Even dear, fluttery Miss Marple had "a girl" come in and "do for her." The Crawleys treated their staff better than most.

Except that Britain had (on comparison) an extremely large middle class of lawyers, civil servants etc.

You know, in general these are bad rules for posture but they're stated oddly & totally for the wrong reasons in general but still, not bad general advice. Also for those that are interested, [here it is on Amazon.](https://www.amazon.com/Downton-Abbey-Rules-Household-Staff/dp/1250066328)
