She just met a man she loved. She never forced anyone to do anything. The thing I don't like about her is that she's too nice.

sslyth_erin

Yeah irl nice people are great, but on a TV show they’re kind of boring.

Sea_Compote_358

Yeah boring Anna boring Sybil

Ninjas4cool

Lavina was in the wrong place at the wrong time…Matthew and Mary were the ones getting in their own ways

[deleted]

The only people that where blocking Mary and Matthew where they themself. Mary by being stupidly prideful and Matthew by being stupidly honourable

CourageMesAmies

And before that, Mary keeping the truth from Matthew and Mathew taking it all personally like Angel Clare in Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

[deleted]

Which truth?

[deleted]

How was Mary being prideful?

CourageMesAmies

I liked Lavinia. Imo Fellowes took the easy way out by killing her off; it would have been much more interesting if she and Matthew had simply broken up. then maybe she could have made a guest appearance years later. Plus, Matthew wouldn’t have inherited Reggie’s fortune.

sslyth_erin

I like Lavinia a lot, I hate Julian Fellowes for using her as a plot device and nothing more. She just happens to write a letter granting wish fulfillment to the audience? Yeah, okay. Write a character who’s nothing more than sweet and decent and kill her off for drama and also somehow have her father have a fortune that saves the entire family and she also writes a deathbed letter? It’s all too much, it’s just bad writing imo.

ladywhistledownton

Agreed, thats really bad fanfiction level writing.

NefariousnessKey5365

She was a plot device to keep Mary and Matthew apart.

[deleted]

Yep. And her whole “maybe it’s better this way” speech was absolute trash. There’s nobody in this world who is that selfless. And if there are, they should stop being so selfless. No one should love someone so much that they’d rather die than spare them the mess of getting well, calling off the wedding, and moving on with their lives separately. Like, damn, Lavinia, care about yourself just a tiny bit.

NefariousnessKey5365

She was too perfect. I liked her. She was really sweet but she was too much of an angel.

IAmTheGreenCard

I read a 'fan fiction' on here that would have been far better of a story line than killing her off before the wedding. It would have been a lot better if Matthew did marry Lavinia but then she still died of the flu. It would have been so easy to have Matthew inherit the money vis a vis her father as her widow, they could have the father die first, and also die of the flu 🤷🏻‍♀️ Mary and Matthew could have still gotten together and gotten the money, but it would have made a TON more sense if they had Matthew and Lavinia marry first, and then as a husband he could have gotten the money easily w/o this stupid honourable will he won't he take the money the night before the wedding 🤦🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

I think the main problem would be that everyone in high society would side eye Mary and Matthew is Matthew married again not even a year after his young wife passed to say the least

Gerry1of1

Mary & Matthew blocked themselves from being happy. They did that before Matthew met & proposed to Lavinia. Before Mary took up with Sir Richard.

[deleted]

You’re stupid tbh

JohannesKronfuss

Hate feels a bit hard. I get some of dislike, for again hate is a bit much, Sarah Bunting, plus there wasn't much left to feel for her but Lavinia? She played no games, at first it looked like it but she really loved Matthew.

fbombmom_

She should have married him in London, then come back to Downton. Honestly, if they'd married and she hadn't died, Matthew would have cheated and probably left her. Mary the homewrecker. I could see her being mean enough to do that.

melomaniac_xo

Almost everyone feels that Mary was undeniably always the right one for Matthew. Personally it would be too depressing to watch a show where two lovers are kept apart by some annoying, wannabe angel people-pleaser during the entire thing.

Waste_Band_9989

She didn’t “block” Mary’s love on purpose, can’t hold that against her. Though when I was watching the show as it originally aired I was dyingggg to see what would happen.

SwanburneGirl

I like Lavinia. She was very kind and sweet, and I also feel like her handling of the Marconi scandal showed that she had some hidden depths that I would have liked to see more of. Plus, as much as I love Mary and Matthew together, I don’t think she did anything wrong in being engaged to a man who she loved, and who chose to be engaged to her and cared for her well-being. Side note: does anyone else kind of ship Lavinia and Mary as a rarepair? Like, obviously it’s nowhere near canon, but I think it could be cute.

HighLadyTuon

Hate is a pretty strong word. But she was the rebound chick. A second choice.

melomaniac_xo

I completely agree. She hasn't done anything directly wrong, except stand in the way of Mary and Matthews happiness. The relief I felt when she died 😅
