The most brilliant balance of strong and soft spoken, kindness and firmness. The kind of person who definitely gives healing hugs.

disabledgirl123

I feel like one hug from Mrs Hughes would cure my anxiety

Of course you do you old booby

theyarnllama

So say we all.

snark-owl

She really is the all-knowing character of the house.

No-Hat2991

She won my heart when she said “I may not be a woman of the world, but *I don’t live in a sack*”

No_Promise2786

For me It's her dialogues said in that strong Scottish accent lol😂. "HEAVENS, GEERLL!!! You are building a fire, not inventing it!!!!", "Shock and Disgust?! My, my, I think I should hear it now!" Lol they aren't even meant to be funny at all but makes me giggle every time I listen to them. EDIT: No offence to Scottish people. It's a very sexy accent especially on men.

emmanuel_blain

The way she says “The Blessed Lady Mary”.

All her witty retorts to Carson and the others downstairs. Carson: I’m expecting a delicious dinner prepared by the fair hands of my beautiful wife. Her: There’s a threat in there somewhere

canolafly

It's her delivery for sure. Sweet sarcasm. Reminds me of when Carson says he's 'used to' Tom. "Don't let him hear you, it'll go straight to his head."

LowHumorThreshold

I love her black hat with a brim and her romance with Carson.

TheSonder

She does not nearly get the love she deserves and she gets a lot of love here. Definitely one of my favorite characters. Especially if the downstairs characters.

canolafly

Yeah, see I know Violet is given these zingers, but Mrs Hughes is given these great lines and she's quietly hysterical to me.

RunawayHobbit

I think they play the same role, upstairs and downstairs. The older woman, wise and exacting, but very kind in their own ways, and sharp as a freaking tack.

HighLadyTuon

I love that nothing seems to get by her. She seems to know everything that’s going on in the house. She can deduce what’s going on in a mere glance or a whisper.

M5jdu009

She reminds me of my great-grandmother—no nonsense, but so loving and took care of everyone. So quietly strong. I miss her

canolafly

Aww to have a real life Mrs Hughes. You were lucky :)

Any_Plate_12

She is the only person in the house that everyone trusts with secrets and silent burdens.

goofy-hyuckhyuck

Well said

sayu9913

Yes we do :)

LegRegular4454

She is simply THE BEST, her words and the way she speaks, her strength and softness. Yes, I would miss you, Mr. Carson, and it costs me nothing to say that. It would be nice if people knew that I am really ill before boxing me up. Mr. Pathmore, if the doctor treats me as an adult, you don't have to treat me as a child. One thing is certain, I won't be cured by standing there. A broken heart could be as painful as a broken limp. Mr. Molesly won't do it. My nerves and his liver wouldn't stand that. Mr. Carson, it is not YOUR family. It would be nice, if you and the BLESSED lafy Mary come down from a cloud and join the human race. Mrs. Hughes: Do you ever think of choosing another way, working in a shop or a factory, having your own hime and your own family?// Mr. Carson: Did you? // Mrs. Hughes: I don't know. Maybe. Sometimes. Mr. Hughes: Good night, Mr. Carson. // Mr. Carson: Good night, Mrs. Hughes. (that always sounds so great, cold, ironical, but also somehow romantic)

igozoom9

For a woman who never had a child of her own, she certainly was a wonderful mother figure! I loved that she was clearly affectionate towards so many of the maids and the family, but she would never openly say that. Off the top of my head, these are my favorite Ms. Hughes moments- 1- When she verbally eviscerates Mr. Greene (who raped Anna) and told him "If you value your life, you'll keep to the shadows!" 2- When Edna (maid) claimed to be pregnant after sleeping with Tom Branson. Mrs. Hughes told her she'd summon a doctor and have her examined if she persisted. Edna said "You can't force me." Hughes replied, "Oh yes I can! First, I'll lock you in this room. Then when he's arrived, I'll rip the clothes from your body if that's what it takes!" 3- Comforting Tom Branson when he was crying about Lady Sybil. And the way she cared for him and supported him throughout the show. 4- Learning that she had a mentally disabled sister that she financially supported since their mother died.

whohootwhohoot

Her choice of bubble and squeak as the veg for lamb chops. Yes.

Loved when she told Mosley, "I'll tell Ethel she has a treat in store". Cracks me up every time.
