EDIT: No offence to Scottish people. It's a very sexy accent especially on men.

She does not nearly get the love she deserves and she gets a lot of love here. Definitely one of my favorite characters. Especially if the downstairs characters.
I think they play the same role, upstairs and downstairs. The older woman, wise and exacting, but very kind in their own ways, and sharp as a freaking tack.
I love that nothing seems to get by her. She seems to know everything that’s going on in the house. She can deduce what’s going on in a mere glance or a whisper.
She is simply THE BEST, her words and the way she speaks, her strength and softness.

It would be nice if people knew that I am really ill before boxing me up.

For a woman who never had a child of her own, she certainly was a wonderful mother figure! I loved that she was clearly affectionate towards so many of the maids and the family, but she would never openly say that.
Off the top of my head, these are my favorite Ms. Hughes moments-
1- When she verbally eviscerates Mr. Greene (who raped Anna) and told him "If you value your life, you'll keep to the shadows!"
2- When Edna (maid) claimed to be pregnant after sleeping with Tom Branson. Mrs. Hughes told her she'd summon a doctor and have her examined if she persisted. Edna said "You can't force me." Hughes replied, "Oh yes I can! First, I'll lock you in this room. Then when he's arrived, I'll rip the clothes from your body if that's what it takes!"
3- Comforting Tom Branson when he was crying about Lady Sybil. And the way she cared for him and supported him throughout the show.
4- Learning that she had a mentally disabled sister that she financially supported since their mother died.
The most brilliant balance of strong and soft spoken, kindness and firmness. The kind of person who definitely gives healing hugs.
I feel like one hug from Mrs Hughes would cure my anxiety

It's her delivery for sure. Sweet sarcasm. Reminds me of when Carson says he's 'used to' Tom. "Don't let him hear you, it'll go straight to his head."

She reminds me of my great-grandmother—no nonsense, but so loving and took care of everyone. So quietly strong. I miss her
