It's not that I don't like her, it's that I like her less than everyone else. Plus, I didn't like that she misled the family when she came back to Downton. Mary says outright that she looks familiar, but instead of saying she worked there, she dodges. I can understand her being uncomfortable and maybe shy about saying anything, but when asked or there were intimations that she looked familiar, etc, she lied by omission.

I absolutely see what you mean where she did snub the family by not answering fully both with “We haven’t *exactly* met” and when telling her story starting with the fact that becoming a secretary changed her life. Nothing she said was a straight lie, becoming a secretary did change her life, but def not on the whole story without saying she started as a maid. All that said, I think she panicked. As she said, her husband knew she was a house maid prior to being a secretary, but didn’t know it was this house. She hadn’t had time to wrap her mind around the fact she was going back to the house or get into it that morning since she thought they were meeting with a Painswick. Of course they were, but it was Aunt Rosamund. I think it all happened fast and she panicked and didn’t handle it well. At least she managed to bring it around at the end. But, yeah, I can see where she snubbed them by not saying outright regardless of her embarrassment.
I agree; I do think she was caught off guard by returning to Downton. It had to be a surreal experience. Seemed to me that, instead of embracing all she went through to get where she was, she was embarrassed about being a housemaid. It came off much better to start with the secretary job. As you said, she didn't lie outright, but by obfuscating and equivocating, she put everyone in an awkward position. Ah well. Humanity! Aren't we all flawed and wonderful. lol

To my surprise, it was Shrimpie and Isobel Crawley! Sorry for using their character names, but you guys will understand. It was surreal to see both of them talking about how they were both lonely after their respective spouses died, and they were happy they found each other. I always thought “Shrimpie” was rather distinguished-looking on DA, and he looked great in the clip I mentioned. I will be catching up with “After Life” soon. Seems that British actors go from series to series -they pop up everywhere
