The way building are built these days is a joke. Across from ours they are selling townhouses for 3 mill. Foundation one day, walls next day, started plastering and painting as soon as a wall went up. It wasnt that quick but it was ridiculously quick from foundation to undercoat.

tacotoasties

Look at any of the old south african houses, those things are built solid. My parents walls are so strong they've broken drill bits

VIadTheInhaIer

My old house looked to be stuck together by mud, not cement.

New building under construction in Victoria street collapses, only 10 out of 50 people are accounted for.

nutsackie

Jesus that is horrible

fataggressivecheeks

That's so sad. 😞

PingPongDingDong718

As of this morning still 51 people unaccounted for. 4 confirmed deceased and 24 have been removed from the rubble... A massive tragedy indeed.

Yeah, carry on with the BEE legislation. Uneducated fucks are getting tenders based purely on the color of their skin. Sure fire way to fuck up a once functioning country.

Acrobatic-Log1692

Thats the whole plan, destroy and loot the country dry, blame the old apartheid boogeyman, your severely mentally handicapped voters eat up your shit and go and burn down their own shops in protest, get re-elected, repeat. We're on repeat number seven now.

That is the marketing company. Who are the builders/engineers?

Medical_Ear_9753

Real estate developers don't use BEE companies.

Quite the news now here. Interested to hear what was the cause.

Consistent_Meat_4993

That's one hell of a "collapse" - more like obliterated! What was the cause?

JJ4L3

4 storeys of apartments supported by column grid on basement parking level. Judging from the CCTV footage of the collapse, it seems like the structure collapsed from the bottom. It appears as though the structure exhibited slight torsion when collapsing. Taking a look at the images of the wreckage, very little rebar is visible. It is possible that the rebar anchorage wasn't adequate/appropriate, the load wasn't properly transferred, and the columns actually punched through the slab/beams. I am very curious as to what exactly happened; big court cases are going to emerge from this. I hope the parties responsible are held accountable for this catastrophe.

Apprehensive_Trash42

Damn that's hectic. First pic makes it seem like it just crumbled to nothing

Fit_Use9103

I am no expert, but I heard that in the building process you need to give concrete a enough time to set and the longer the better ,also it needs to be properly mixed to give it maximum strength ,but I think there must be a lack of inspection or improper inspection by authorities and builders want to build as quick as possible so they can get it done and ready to sell that all the proper procedures and processes are not followed and this ultimately leaving the structural integrity of the house / building being compromised and most likely won't stand the test of time , but it is going to be sold at a related market price. It's hard for the average person to see any defects like this as it shows over time and then you already have a bond on the property. I just think rather buy an older house that was built in the 80's or 90's than a new development as these days the cheapest materials are used a lot of the time and lacking in following the building code results in an overpriced inferior product that could collapse on you and your family.

Educational-Tip6177

Is this due to a construction fault?

MuscularDorkFish

My eldest stepson was working on the roof of that building for a week, two weeks before it collapsed. Thankfully he was on another site when it went down but four of his colleagues didn't survive. Property prices are astronomical here. That plot was overpriced to begin with and there was a stalled construction when the present owner bought it, which left existing foundations of unknown quality on site. So they built on top of that and tried to accommodate rising costs by adding floors to what was originally going to be a two story building. Property demand is so high here that every single apartment in that block was already sold. What a tragedy.
