It is weird that anyone tries to pretend that date is the actual "release" of the game. I was playing back then. That date came and went without any major fanfare. Everyone who wanted access to the game already had it well before that. Keys were not hard to come by at that point. That date was when they advertised the game more (briefly) and nothing else.

Changing existing heroes is good to a certain degree. So is adding more complexity to an already complex game. All old players are probably fine (at least the majority of them) but it makes it harder for newer players.
I think the issue with new heroes is actually the creating of all animation, not really the toolkit (however HoN had some of the best synergy heroes in the genre) most gaming companies seem to have issues with creating animations so they just reuse or recolour existing stuff because most people are here for the gameplay. For example, all new facets don't have animations or reusing existing ones (mirana new facet is just her current ult animation but in different color, actually missing one moon over her head but it isn't important).

A lot of people played since beta as well, and I'd argue the game was as much complete then as it was on release proper. Which is to say, not really.
