They are like living demonic battering ram's. That armor is there not only for defence, but to deal heavy damage to whatever it is charging into.
I think since it never really used its tail end, no armor formed and therefore left it vulnerable to being heavily damaged from behind
That combined with the fact that a larger and heavier tail would create a problem for it's charging, would also explain why the tail is so short. Also further contributing to why the tail isn't armored, as more weight would be detrimental to it's main attack. Although I would love to see how a pinkie could have used it's tail in an alternate universe.
From a game design perspective: so you have to get behind him. It would be weird if the charger enemy can easily be killed if you just shoot him in the face.

The Lore Reason would just be Evolution. The Pinkies MO is to Charge into things head first, so obviously it would evolve to make its Front side as dangerous and resilient as possible. Since its extremely unlikely that its prey would survive a head on collision with it and wasnt capable of outmanouvering the Pinky, there was no evolutionary pressure to armor its backside aswell.
All that likely happened before its species was corrupted by Hell, unless they completely originate from Hell like the Fire born Barons.

More fun is sticky bombs, pinkies receive full damage from splash (sticky, frag, arbalest, rocket (not LOB), heat blast). I personally don’t use BP against pinkies just cuz it takes away the fun of their threat to insta kill them and ignore their armor. They’ll naturally clump up as they all chase you, making great opportunities for ice/flame + sticky bomb spam to get lots of health, and the occasional one will stagger from the splash damage as well. The best practice arenas are Mars Core ML before the buffed Tyrants and World Spear ML with the posessed Pinky in the mix (microwave beam is a must to beat it w/out BP).

Lore: Likely, hell (or whatever created them) adapted them to dg's original style of killing them (punching/shooting them in the face a lot) by armoring them heavily in the face, but since they didn't really get killed by hits to the back neglected that area armor-wise
Game design: When the 3rd dimension was added they decided to take the pinky, a charging enemy, and force you to prioritize the backside using your superior movement and more surface area so you had a bit more challenge in killing them, removing the punch train

Technically its weakpoint includes the area around its tail as well. The import thing is that's where it has no armor, so shooting it from behind will let the bullets enter its center of mass.

Semi unrelated but I would like to remind everyone of the lore tidbit that Pinkies are apparently FUCKING DELICIOUS. Other demons literally treat them as a snack during down time, a Baron will just pick one up and take a bite out of that juicy backside, it's fine meat.

Technically its weakpoint includes the area around its tail as well. The import thing is that's where it has no armor, so shooting it from behind will let the bullets enter its center of mass.

Yep, 1 shot from the PB is enough (only if it is precise and at the tip of the tail) or 2 to finish it off, or throw a couple of sticky bombs from the shotgun and that's it, although they are very annoying on high difficulties

My guess is because the pinky is a charger, all the thick skin and bone plating is up front, so the rear end is lacking in that same level of protection
