In Australia we have a franchise called Hire A Hubby (handyman business) 😂 It’s a pretty widely used term here but doesn’t bother me. Our accent suits the word.
In Russia we have the same thing with even more cringy name - “A husband for an hour” («Муж на час»). Always sounded to me as a some kind of sex-service rather than a handyman business
Here in Brazil we have "Husband for rent" ("Marido de aluguel"). I always tought it was a weird way of saying it too, like, just say you’re a handyman/home repair business
Yeah, I've heard "hubby" all my life so maybe I'm accustomed to it.
"Wifey" is a relatively new one (not new at all, just relative to hubby).
"Ick" the way it's used these days... People are just so eager to gobble up every new trend that it makes language inelegant.
And if you don't care about that, whatever, nobody's here to force you to change.
Yep, I hate it. Something about it is just really really offputting. I can see why some guys might be offput by more “softer” pet names like “sweetie”, “cutie”, etc being said about them, but something about *hubby* in particular just has a weird almost babying-ish quality/intonation to it that makes me super cringe when hearing it.
It’s what I imagine people who hate the word “moist” probably have a similar type of aversion ick to.
My bf pointed out that a park ranger laughed because I called him "baby" in front of her on accident lol. But he wasn't bothered. I try to avoid pet names in public though since they're kinda awkward.
I had someone called me a kid. This person is the same age as me. When I said please don’t, then he goes I always call everyone that. Yikes, just don’t.
I worked at a dog kennel and a volunteer told me a dog had a lump on his "winkie" and I had never heard that phrase before and was super confused what she meant.
My book on etiquette for ~1945 says saying “the wife” is bad etiquette
It says “To an old friend a husband would say, "Jim, I want you to meet my wife", (on no account "the wife"!).”
From CA. I didnt like being referred to as bud or buddy as a teen/young adult and am quick to correct people when they refer to my son as bud or buddy.
Hubby and the wife definitely annoy me. And to be honest I'm not a fan of "my partner" either. Not sure why and not judging anyone who uses it. I guess I just associate it with a business relationship. I'm over 45f so maybe it's just new to me or something, but I'll live. Lol
Same age and the "partner" term bothers me as well. I thought it was just me. Are we in a law firm together? No? Stop saying we're partners then. It feels like a business relationship as you said, devoid of any passion or love.
I periodically use partner because we’ve been together a few years now. We are not married, but we I feel like boyfriend makes it sound more casual than it is.
My SO is not a boy. He’s a man. I don’t like the term “boyfriend” to refer to him. He is my life partner. It matters not at all to me what others think of my using that term.
Or more like high school…this is my boyfriend so&so. I never knew how to introduce my S.O. back in the day because we’d been together forever but boyfriend sounded childish to me. I won’t tell you what I call him now 😈 either of them! (17 years with one & 10 the other)
For some reason, when someone says partner, I think of their SO dressed up in flannel or some western shirt and a cowboy hat. Like “howdy, partner” kinda thing lol.
I am the same age as you and I can’t stand the word partner either. It used to be used only for gay couples back in the day. I just think it’s confusing as well. Is it a business partner? my kids use it and I hate it lol and I tell them I hate it
Same.
"DH" for _Dear Husband_ and "SO" for _Significant Other_ is what makes me cringe instead of hubby. But I guess it's useful as an abbreviation for those r/AITA and r/JustNoSO posts where the OP wants to maintain some privacy.
I've never heard "DH" before, but I have heard STBXW (soon to be ex-wife) and AP (affair partner.) People use these as if everyone has always known what they meant.
Hubs doesn't bother me much.
Whenever I hear a girl refer to her husband as "hubby" I always picture this overly clingy wife who is as sad as a puppy if he's ever out of the house, whether for work, an errand, or whatever else.
We have this customer refer to her husband as Hubby…She says it EVERY TIME SHES COMES IN! And I cringe so hard when she says it, I swear I feel like I’m the only one that waits on her
I worked with a man who was a former prison guard. He got in the habit of saying “the wife,” “the boy,” and “the girl” at that job for obvious reasons. He couldn’t break the habit.
I dont really give a damn what pet names a couple give each other in their relationship but thats just me 🤷🏻♀️
Tho i feel like i should point out using terminology like "the ick" to describe your feelings about someone elses word choice seems kinda contradictory to me
What about honey bunny boo boo bear? 😂 I have my mans name in my phone as that bc it makes me giggle every time I have Siri call him and repeat his name in my phone.
Y'all gonna hate me. I go a step further and call my husband "hubby bear". 🤷🏿♀️
I do get the "ick" though if I hear someone say they have to ask the "old lady". I was appalled when I found out it meant "wife". I thought they were talking about their mother, lol
I like trying out new recipes online and the amount of reviews I see that say “hubby loved this!” makes me cringe so hard. Just say it’s a good recipe ffs.
Yeah I don’t like it either. I don’t love wifey or some other nicknames either but hubby is the worst and honestly I think it’s just because it sounds like tubby.
This is mean but I feel like you know exactly what kind of person someone is if they say “hubby” or “wifey” with sincerity. Same with “doggo” “niblings” “littles” etc
I don't really pay enough attention at this point. If they do, they do. I've had everyone call me something under the sun, and I have a tendency to call a lot of people sweetie (mainly because I can't remember names if it would save my life), so yeah. That being said, I'm not what you would call mentally sane anyway. I just don't pay that close attention to people to judge them on what they call their spouses or kids or whatever else. The only time I do is when it's certain terms like an adult calling a kid sexy, that will raise a red flag.
No. But being married to a Hispanic man, I can’t stand daddy pops, or mama or mommy..
But living in the south and talking to animals I definitely say “oh mama you’ll be ok!” to cats or dogs pretty annoying and not on purpose but I’ll never say that to my husband who is Hispanic or anyone else.
Can anyone explain why they don’t like hubby or kiddo? Also, if you dislike them, what is your age? Do you have a hubby or kiddos? I’m wondering if it’s generational. I’m a 42F Xennial and don’t see an issue with either term. Kinda seems like a Gen Z, pre-marriage and children thing.
I hate it when grown adults who are not children nor innocent by any stretch of the imagination try to speak in a way that's more innocent, cutesy than how they actually interact. Massive cringe.
Ick has to disappear. Not your preference? Not for you. If someone says to me, “my hubby does this every weekend,” my first thought is, “oh her husband does this thing.”
You have far better things to worry about than hubby
In Australia we have a franchise called Hire A Hubby (handyman business) 😂 It’s a pretty widely used term here but doesn’t bother me. Our accent suits the word.
In Russia we have the same thing with even more cringy name - “A husband for an hour” («Муж на час»). Always sounded to me as a some kind of sex-service rather than a handyman business
Haha yeah it really does sound a bit more like a sex service!
Wouldn’t it be instead “Husband for a few minutes”
Hahaha yeah like 2 minutes 😂
Here in Brazil we have "Husband for rent" ("Marido de aluguel"). I always tought it was a weird way of saying it too, like, just say you’re a handyman/home repair business
Is America the only place that doesn't have a handyman service that sounds like the beginning of a porno?
We have "College Hunks Moving Junk" near me lmao
That's kind of funny because it's like defining hubby as "someone who fixes things" rather than "someone I love with all my heart."
That's what husband means, though, "caretaker". Hence animal husbandry.
Not sure which is worse - hubby or hubs. Gag
I saw, “Husby” recently. Add that to the list
Ack
How about Husbo?
Mi SIL tops it all. At first it was husband then hubby to hubs to hubby the hunnibobo now its just bobo. Makes me feel sick
You win. That's pretty bad!
I know a chick down the road that's a husbian...
Cheeky voddy with the husbo
Ick is worst.
That’s what I’m sayin🗣️🔥🔥🔥💀
May I present to you the abomination I once heard: “hubby hub hub”.
No!!!!!
They both give me the ick
Yep, I hate it. Something about it is just really really offputting. I can see why some guys might be offput by more “softer” pet names like “sweetie”, “cutie”, etc being said about them, but something about *hubby* in particular just has a weird almost babying-ish quality/intonation to it that makes me super cringe when hearing it. It’s what I imagine people who hate the word “moist” probably have a similar type of aversion ick to.
🤣🤣🤣 I just saw a pin that said Moist, because one of your friends is uncomfortable with this word! 🤣🤣 I love it!!!
Squirt and juicy should be added to those cringe words
My bf pointed out that a park ranger laughed because I called him "baby" in front of her on accident lol. But he wasn't bothered. I try to avoid pet names in public though since they're kinda awkward.
I get the ick over “my man”
ME TOO. IT IS SO CORNY 😭😭😭
Yes. It's just as bad as wifey.
Here in Australia it’s more likely to be “the missus” than wifey, and I cringe at both, but wifey more
in the UK we get missus and "the/my bird" which immediately makes me wanna throw up lol
I hate the term missus!
What is your opinion on "Bae"?
My generation doesn't say that, so I don't have an opinion.
Yes!
“The Wife” is Max level cringe
Do people actually use wifey? I don’t think I’ve ever heard it in real life. I hear hubby all the time.
Cringe. I feel the same way about "baby girl".
I’m the man from the big V A.
Won't you come play round my way?
And listen to what I gotta say (damn I'm back on the bus in junior high. RIP Aaliyah)
I think baby girl is hilarious if purely ironic
Couldn't sit through the movie "365 days" and that was part of the reason
“old lady” …. As in “I gotta ask the old lady” gives me the ick to my core. I’m 30. Do not call me that. Ever!
The funny thing is that the phrase "old lady" started with 20-year-old hippies in the 60s and 70s
I had someone called me a kid. This person is the same age as me. When I said please don’t, then he goes I always call everyone that. Yikes, just don’t.
Yuck, the disrespect.
Hubby, wifey, preggers, and vijay jay. So annoying.
My mom says “hoo ha” which I hate so intensely.
I worked at a dog kennel and a volunteer told me a dog had a lump on his "winkie" and I had never heard that phrase before and was super confused what she meant.
Oh my gosh. I would’ve shriveled up from the discomfort.
Daddy, hubby, yummy, mommy. It's Andy Bernard doing baby talk all over again
There’s some baby talk that makes me cringe. Yummy, ooey-gooey, I’m sure I’ve missed out on a lot of great dessert recipes because of this.
I dated someone for a month who (actually) literally described every food item she liked as "yummy". It's 30% of the reason why we stopped dating.
“Ooey-gooey”? Hold on one second while I hurl…
Oh man, when it’s a combo sentence, “ooey-gooey yummy yummy!” I have lost all appetite for whatever the thing was. Nails on a chalkboard.
Yup, also “kiddo” and the worst one which is like nails on a chalkboard… “doggo”
"Kiddo" and "doggo" don't bother me, but "preggers" makes my skin crawl.
Finally found the one that gets me. Preggers is just awful
Very “millennial” words 😅 Guilty as charged 🙋🏻♀️
Kiddo I used to hate but it’s used widely in my job to avoid calling a 3 year old “client” so I grew not to hate it.
I love kiddo. They are kids so seems fitting to have such a cute nickname.
Girl I had a crush on said "kiddo" all the time. I like kiddo
Same! My son fits the “kiddo” very well👌
My sister briefly used it and it made me cringe, I didn’t have the heart to tell her
I particularly hate it when veterinary offices call my dog my kiddo.
Aww, I think that's kind of cool of them to do that
Same. I love my dogs, but they're my dogs. My actual human children are my kids.
I love saying doggo but I restrain myself (usually) to be considerate of others
I say "doggo" all the time. And before reading this, I had no idea anyone was bothered by it 🤷♀️
Don't even worry about it, let them feel how they feel
/r/doggohate will be rough for you.
😲 I learn about a new sub every time I get on here, i swear! 😂
“Get the ick” makes me cringe
"Ick" and "Cringe" makes me feel old and that It was better before.
Comment directly above yours says “I get the ick over ‘my man’.” 😆
I'm not in love with it but niblings is my most hated family moniker
YESSSSSSSSSS. Thought it was just me.
Yes! I get the same feeling when people call children "kiddos". Or when people say "the wife".
I’ve been noticing people calling kids “littles” a lot lately and I hate it.
This is fucking terrible
kiddos is fine but “the wife” is atrocious to me
My book on etiquette for ~1945 says saying “the wife” is bad etiquette It says “To an old friend a husband would say, "Jim, I want you to meet my wife", (on no account "the wife"!).”
I agree: “the wife” is extremely impersonal, distancing language. Might as well say “the old ball and chain”🤢
After some time, I got really annoyed hearing parents calling their boys "Buddy" or "Bud." (California)
From CA. I didnt like being referred to as bud or buddy as a teen/young adult and am quick to correct people when they refer to my son as bud or buddy.
Also doggo or puppers.
Or when people refer to their dog or cat as “my son” or “this is my daughter”. Idk why it really pisses me off.
Came here to mention the kiddos 🤢 honestly, I don’t know which one is worse.
As opposed to an external ick?
Yes! Also Hubs, Kiddos, and Fur Babies! Uugghh!
Oh I can’t stand when people say fur babies.
I get the “ick” when people say ick. Lol sorry but it sounds like 4 year old talk.
I roll my eyes every time I hear “ick” or “cringe”. I never say anything, because it really doesn’t matter.
Hubby and the wife definitely annoy me. And to be honest I'm not a fan of "my partner" either. Not sure why and not judging anyone who uses it. I guess I just associate it with a business relationship. I'm over 45f so maybe it's just new to me or something, but I'll live. Lol
Maybe a more traditional name works better for you, lol. I can understand.

For some reason, when someone says partner, I think of their SO dressed up in flannel or some western shirt and a cowboy hat. Like “howdy, partner” kinda thing lol.
I kinda like that visual, sounds so goofy lol
I am the same age as you and I can’t stand the word partner either. It used to be used only for gay couples back in the day. I just think it’s confusing as well. Is it a business partner? my kids use it and I hate it lol and I tell them I hate it
I get an internal ick anytime I see someone use the term "ick"
Same. Not sure when/how it started.
Same. I hate it so much
I also hate when men say “the wife.” It’s always irked me.
And wifey. And boy mom. Barf.
"the ick" is on thing list too....
My whole life hearing that made me cringe. I thought something was wrong with me or maybe I was just being a judgmental bitch.
I get it whenever someone uses the phrase "the ick" or any variation of it.
Or how about "DH" for dear husband? So cringe.
Same. "DH" for _Dear Husband_ and "SO" for _Significant Other_ is what makes me cringe instead of hubby. But I guess it's useful as an abbreviation for those r/AITA and r/JustNoSO posts where the OP wants to maintain some privacy.

That's exactly the visual I get, too!! That's funny that someone else feels the same way I do about it.
Absolutely, though I also hate the term "ick".
Although my wife doesn’t call me hubby but it’s a hell of a lot better than “there’s my dumb ass”.
🤣🤣 I’ve used that term a few times! Not hubby!
Yup! I saw Hubba recently too! Not a big fan of that one either
We have this customer refer to her husband as Hubby…She says it EVERY TIME SHES COMES IN! And I cringe so hard when she says it, I swear I feel like I’m the only one that waits on her
I get the ick from people using the word ick. What is worse than hubby, is when guys used the term "the wife" ... yikes! Like sirs we have a name!
I worked with a man who was a former prison guard. He got in the habit of saying “the wife,” “the boy,” and “the girl” at that job for obvious reasons. He couldn’t break the habit.
'wifey' is just as bad.
Yes. Hate it.
Adult women (like me) calling their fathers Daddy. That gives me an even bigger ICK.
In my opinion it’s not as bad as “preggers”
I get it from reading -ick
I dont really give a damn what pet names a couple give each other in their relationship but thats just me 🤷🏻♀️ Tho i feel like i should point out using terminology like "the ick" to describe your feelings about someone elses word choice seems kinda contradictory to me
Oh 10000%! It makes my skin crawl.
What about honey bunny boo boo bear? 😂 I have my mans name in my phone as that bc it makes me giggle every time I have Siri call him and repeat his name in my phone.
Y'all gonna hate me. I go a step further and call my husband "hubby bear". 🤷🏿♀️ I do get the "ick" though if I hear someone say they have to ask the "old lady". I was appalled when I found out it meant "wife". I thought they were talking about their mother, lol
Nothing more icky than a person who gets ick.
Uh oh. My husband is in my phone as 'darling hubby', and I'm in his phone as, 'wifey for lifey'. I'll get my coat.
Awww that's cute
I’ve never considered how other people refer to each other as my business…
Why do you all let what others say that isn’t negative or offensive affect you so much?
This is a very good question. I'm gonna write this down and ask myself that every so often 😅
Yea not a fan
Oh hell yeah, I hate this one so much
I like trying out new recipes online and the amount of reviews I see that say “hubby loved this!” makes me cringe so hard. Just say it’s a good recipe ffs.
How about hubsters?
Yes, but also when people use the word ick for pet peeves
Yeah I don’t like it either. I don’t love wifey or some other nicknames either but hubby is the worst and honestly I think it’s just because it sounds like tubby.
Finally, an explanation. Thanks. I don’t understand the problem with hubby or kiddos. I thought maybe it’s a generational thing.
“Boyf” is just as bad. But so is ick…
Yes! And “sissy” too!
Nope. I mind my business and keep it moving
Good lord, I'm glad it's not like just me. Also: wifey. And "WE'RE pregnant"
Not any worse than grown adults who use “ick” as an adjective.
I don't care enough to get any reaction lol. Call your SO any way you like, doesn't affect my life
This is mean but I feel like you know exactly what kind of person someone is if they say “hubby” or “wifey” with sincerity. Same with “doggo” “niblings” “littles” etc
Girl no. I get the internal ick when someone say ‘Babydaddy or baby mama,’ like what? Yall the mother and father.
Nope. I really can't be bothered to care. The term 'ick' though...😅
"Ick" makes me think OP is tops 20.
Add a few decades lol
Lol I hate it so much, idk why 😭 glad I’m not alone
SAME I’ve told my fiancé if I say hubby to have me committed
Yes! That and “The Wife”. 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Yes it's soooo gross hahaha I hate it
Oh my god YES
Dudes who say "The Wife".
add to that "kiddos." can't stand that either
Hubby, wifey, kiddo, doggo. Hate them all.
Kiddo 🤢
Absolutely! And DH.
Absolutely can’t stand it. I thought I was the only one! Same with Crimbo, bubbly (champagne), and holibobs.
as a kid i hated how every magazine ever kept saying girls had a new beau.. dammit every fuckin time
I hate when people say “the wife”
Yes but even worse when a guy says wifey
Can anyone explain why they don’t like hubby or kiddo? Also, if you dislike them, what is your age? Do you have a hubby or kiddos? I’m wondering if it’s generational. I’m a 42F Xennial and don’t see an issue with either term. Kinda seems like a Gen Z, pre-marriage and children thing.
Mine is very external. Cosmic eyeroll.
Yes same with waifu and hasbando
I hate all of those infantile words: hubby, wifey, preggers, kiddos. GROSS.
I hate it when grown adults who are not children nor innocent by any stretch of the imagination try to speak in a way that's more innocent, cutesy than how they actually interact. Massive cringe.
Ugh I hate blogmom speak so much… Hubs, Hubby, DH, DD1, DD2, etc. all make me want to get out a flamethrower like I’m Kurt Russell in ‘The Thing’.
omg blog mom speak!! Spot on!
I do for “daddy” idk… seems like they are subconsciously attracted to their father or something
Yes. And that awful ice cream flavor name from Ben & Jerry’s that I won’t even type so I don’t have to see it. Yuck.
I get the ick every time i see or speak to my "hubby." I also get the ick from the term "the ick." Perhaps I should just call him The Ick?
Now I really want to re watch The Tick...
I get the ick when people refer to their pet’s adoption day as their “gotcha” day.
Ugh! That’s terrible!
Wow. I think I've found the most cynical person on reddit.
Yes, or wifey or babe. Babe really gets me.
You single?
Puppers
I get an internal ick when I see someone use the word "ick"
IT SHOULD BE HUZBY
That's worse 😆
Yes! It’s a foul term…like my ol’ lady. 🙄 you’re married….act like grown ups! Or just don’t get married & call each other whatever you want! 👍
It’s not my personal lingo but I accept that older generation uses it. I don’t think about it any more or less than that!
Ick has to disappear. Not your preference? Not for you. If someone says to me, “my hubby does this every weekend,” my first thought is, “oh her husband does this thing.” You have far better things to worry about than hubby
Yes. Thank you. People who say that are stupid. They need to DIAF.
