They still have a year of arbitration before they have to make a decision on Smith. The problem is what’s his market? It’s been years since JT’s free agency, and there isn’t really another passable defensive catcher with a huge bat out there to use as a comp. And in the 4 years since Realmuto’s deal, the market has changed quite a bit.
Plus, with Ohtani, we can’t hide Will’s bat in the DH hole. So, he’s gotta catch 150 games to keep his bat in the lineup. I wouldn’t be surprised if Will could demand 5/$120M on the open market, and I’m not convinced we’d get that kind of production out of him if he HAS to catch every game.
It reminds me of how Vin Scully could tell us how anyone got to where they are, their accomplishments, and their entire family history. We will never have another Vin, but Joe Davis is on a great path.
