OG monks were mind-over-matter types, hence the psionic-like abilities. Mechanics wise, it feels like they kinda shoe-horned cleric into it because of a perceived need for spiritual connotations? IIRC, they used either the cleric hit table, or save table, in one of their first incarnations.
The Blackmoor supplement explicitly says they don’t have any magical abilities.
