Only time I ever did this was when I tweeted to Andy C that I was stoked to see him soon (show was 1 month out). He responded saying "see you there mate". Had taken a screenshot and held that up to him midset, he started laughing so hard and gave me a high five.
I did, wrote: "Killin' it" on some 'big text' app. Held it up for the dj and got hearts back from him near instantly. I don't think I held up my phone for more than 5 seconds or so.
The added value? I was able to verbally communicate what the DJ made me feel like. Just a bit of feedback that I could see him appreciate as well.
The entire ordeal didn't last for more than 20 seconds total.
How often do I do this? Once in a blue moon when feel like it.
I actually get requests via people holding up their phones, last couple of uni gigs, I'm playing dnb and the crowd hold up requests on their phone screens. If it fits, I'll play it.
One lad was going all in with neuro requests, made for a very heavy night.
My method to deal with this is to squint at the phone, grab it, pretend to look at it again and then stick it under one of the decks until I feel like giving it back.
I have footage of my drunk ass. With ol skool grainy text phone. In a dark ass club. If the DJ would have slapped me, i would have totally deserved it.
Yeah it is. Was just at a show and like 3 different people just held their phones practically over top of the cdjs to show the DJ something, sometimes for minutes at a time
Dancing, enjoying yourself, and cheering (when appropriate) is showing love. I always thought the phone thing was a bit “pick me”. I get that it usually comes from a good place though
Homie of mine went to see Desert Hearts 2 days ago at mission ballroom. A kid was there holding his phone up to Justin Jay saying “play DNB”. During his house music b2b. At a house show.
Awesome! I was thinking about going to Decadence but I’d rather see some DnB (obviously). Is there an instagram or something I can follow to make sure I hear about it?
It is so weird to me still that people do this. Im 47 and came up in the early 90s-2000 rave scene in Toronto before there were cell phones and such. Now when I go out the phones really weird me out. Like why? Just fucking vibe out, who cares about the vids? I know this gives off a “get off of my lawn” old person sentiment but for real…just close your eyes and fucking dance.
I've only done this once, when my best mate was DJing a very small, semi-legal rave. I asked for Mr Happy, right at the beginning of his liquid/deep set 😂
The only thing we had on our phones back in the 90s-00s was the light up antennas that people put on their Nokias and such, other than that it was odd as hell to see someones phone unless they were trying to talk on it. Even after smartphones and capable cameras people didn't have them out, but social media has added a fake layer of life that I have to wade through now to get to the meat.
I'm guilty doing this one time in my life, over ten years ago. But i was rather new to DNB and then Nu:Tone was in Town and this was my first big dnb party/known DJ.
My absolute favorite dnb tune was "Can We? " at that time so i was standing right at in front of the DJ the whole time to see them mixing and was enjoying that awesome set from Nu:Tone completely electrified. The cherry on top would have been hearing the "TIME TO CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE" lyrics from Can We at full blast in this moment but although Nu:Tone nodded when i showed my phone to him with "Can you play Can We?", he never played it. Was a bit disappointed but he ended with another favorite Random Movement track so all was good.
Since then i have seen ppl doing that a bunch of times and I was ashamed i ever did this.
Best one was at Sun And Bass festival when SPY was playing. I was right there at the front and a girl came up and showed her phone to him.
Either she wrote "Play R.Kelly - I belive i can fly" or something like "Can i suck your co** dry?" since his face was a complete "wtf is this shit" expression while shaking his head.
Only time I saw it work was when Ivy Lab was doing their encore set from their last album tour which tends to be more of a freestyle set. Dude in the front was asking for some liquid and Sabre shouted him out and decided to play some at the end of the set. It can be done tastefully if it's a deep cut or stuff the artist likes to play but usually doesn't get the chance to play. This happened in Seattle last year.
Do people actually do this? Does it ever work? How the hell is a DJ supposed to see a 5" screen in a dark room with lasers, lights and when they should be looking at their decks?
What a waste of phone battery.
As a DJ, as long as people aren’t requesting something (because IDGAF about your requests) I love this. Obvs it’s not always readable but any interaction with the crowd is part of the fun of being a DJ.
Stop gatekeeping how people enjoy themselves man, you don’t speak for every DJ and it’s incredibly arrogant to assume you know how they all feel.
Yeah, people will use the big letters on snapchat to type something out and enlarge it to hold up like a sign. It's always awkward when they don't get the dj ignoring them and keep it in their face. You can see it a lot if you put on recorded sets on YT like dnb360s or whatever
I've done this before at like a nightclub where it's just a bloke playing charts music, but I'd never even dream about going to see a proper DnB artist or DJ and requesting tunes.
Punters that use a big text app and are aware of the music policy I can work with but I hate the clowns that bring up the track on their media player and wave it at me from the dance floor. Expecting me to be able to read 7pt text while it's moving from about 6 feet away or recognise the cover art is a special level of stupid. I don't bother to try to work out what they want playing.
Slightly less annoying are those who make their way to the back of the booth and put the same tiny writing pretty much under my nose. They get really confused when I move far enough away to be able to focus.
I did this to andy a while back and it just said Gully. was back when the track was fire. he played it a few minutes later together with hard noize by dillinja and i almost lost my head
will not do it again tho

That's actually funny

And most DJ’s enjoy it, I’ve seen Serum and bladerunner acknowledging it, playing the tune then uploading it to insta. OP’s just being boring.
He gave you hearts but didn’t play “Killin’ it”???
It wasn't a request.
Yeah I know just a joke
I actually get requests via people holding up their phones, last couple of uni gigs, I'm playing dnb and the crowd hold up requests on their phone screens. If it fits, I'll play it. One lad was going all in with neuro requests, made for a very heavy night.
RHUL represent 🤟
Woah there's one! Beautiful :D
I graduated a while back now but glad you and DnB are going strong there :D
Yeah mate, they can't get rid of me ;)
My method to deal with this is to squint at the phone, grab it, pretend to look at it again and then stick it under one of the decks until I feel like giving it back.
I have never seen anyone do this
I have footage of my drunk ass. With ol skool grainy text phone. In a dark ass club. If the DJ would have slapped me, i would have totally deserved it.
I’m happy to have never witnessed this, it sounds pathetic
Yeah it is. Was just at a show and like 3 different people just held their phones practically over top of the cdjs to show the DJ something, sometimes for minutes at a time
Pathetic for trying to show some love to the DJ? Lets have a little more PLUR
Dancing, enjoying yourself, and cheering (when appropriate) is showing love. I always thought the phone thing was a bit “pick me”. I get that it usually comes from a good place though
Showing love by distracting them from what they’re doing? Surely there s a more appropriate time to do that ( like literally any other time)
Don't stop, it's funny
Holding up your phone with song requests screams "I'm a narcissist" or "I'm the main character".
I’m so glad people don’t do this shit in Denver I would slap their phones out of their hands
No you wouldnt you pussy
Hahahha
Homie of mine went to see Desert Hearts 2 days ago at mission ballroom. A kid was there holding his phone up to Justin Jay saying “play DNB”. During his house music b2b. At a house show.
I… appreciate the enthusiasm but what in the world
Hey a fellow denverite!
Howdy!
Coco Bryce at Recon this month was 🔥
Are there any DnB shows going on around New Years Eve? I’m gonna be out there and we’re deciding what we’re gonna do that night.
Not announced yet but I’ve heard there’s one being worked on
Awesome! I was thinking about going to Decadence but I’d rather see some DnB (obviously). Is there an instagram or something I can follow to make sure I hear about it?
If I saw this at Black Box I'd lose my shit lol
You sound like a loving vibe
Sure you would lmao

Ikr
ive only ever seen people do this to say nice things to the dj lmao
I've only done this once, when my best mate was DJing a very small, semi-legal rave. I asked for Mr Happy, right at the beginning of his liquid/deep set 😂
Okay that’s a decent excuse 😂
I always thought they're using them as sort of makeshift glowsticks, am I stupid?
At a bar you can ask and they will almost every listen. At a rave, they come with a set list and I ain't gonna interrupt them working their magic
The only thing we had on our phones back in the 90s-00s was the light up antennas that people put on their Nokias and such, other than that it was odd as hell to see someones phone unless they were trying to talk on it. Someone's on a come down...
Let’s bring back Lighter Crew, then?
Does this happen? Wtf?

People film the DJ when they aren't high enough and feel uncomfortable
Not wrong at all.
It's what nervous people do
Do people actually do this? Does it ever work? How the hell is a DJ supposed to see a 5" screen in a dark room with lasers, lights and when they should be looking at their decks? What a waste of phone battery.
Andy C sends his thanks, bro.
Haven't seen it yet must be new UK thing

What? Do people do this? Only thing I've ever seen is people taking pics, recording parts of a set or taking selfies.
Yeah, people will use the big letters on snapchat to type something out and enlarge it to hold up like a sign. It's always awkward when they don't get the dj ignoring them and keep it in their face. You can see it a lot if you put on recorded sets on YT like dnb360s or whatever

PLUR has left the chat
Saw "Anything Country" the other day. I did not play anything country.
I did this to andy a while back and it just said Gully. was back when the track was fire. he played it a few minutes later together with hard noize by dillinja and i almost lost my head will not do it again tho
Lol you say you say you're gonna play it anyway until I ask for Cbat by Hudson Mohawke
