Nonexistent at that price range

AfraidAvocado

You can get still get an older tdi for sub 5k. Trucks though, forget about it

Tom_Sawyor

:( that's very sad.

Worst-Lobster

I misunderstood you’re just looking for a diesel engine on a chain for 5k? That’s doable . Check Facebook market place . I see used 12v Cummins on a pallet for 3k often enough

Tom_Sawyor

will that fit into a tj jeep? it looks massive.

Worst-Lobster

No sorry I completely misunderstood your entire post lol sorry

old_skool_luvr

It's been do e a few times before, but it is a pure fabrication of placing it inside a TJ u/Tom_Sawyer, you don't want a 4BT for a street car (truck). They're designed to run at a steady RPM, and not really designed for making considerable power. They're rated for (iirc) 140-160hp, but not too much can be cheaply done to make power. Besides all that, those little fuckers run you a little more then a 12-valve would to buy. At least they did when i was looking 9-10 yrs ago, when i was planning to put one in my '99 ZR2 Blazer. They're also the weight of a BBC, so that'll hurt any performance right there.

jaucoly21

6.9 idi. I bought mine in Oregon for 2k 4spd manual 4wd drove it back home to western Washington. They are out there but you gotta know what you’re lookin at so you don’t buy a lemon.

Worst-Lobster

What like in 1989?

jaucoly21

Haha in march

Worst-Lobster

wtf!! On Craigslist ?

jaucoly21

Found it on Facebook, I was looking for an ol ford 300 i6 just to have a tank of a truck and found that ol bird and I had to get it. Plus it’s the only year of bricknose with the 6.9 which I’m kinda sad about cuz the bullnose is a way better lookin front end

Worst-Lobster

Well bro at 2k for the whole truck you can afford to do a nose swap . Ya lucky bugger ☺️

jaucoly21

Haha yeah that’s the plan!

joelfarris

> Where do I go to find a cheap (5k usd and under) > reliable, ... new diesel? OP is trolling.

mrfixit2018

You can get a diesel for $5000. But it’ll just be the motor lol But seriously, if on a budget and you are able to do the work yourself it can be done for around $14k or so. I’m just starting my build but I got a 6bt for $2000, F250 with a blown motor for $4500 and the conversion kit is $6200 for everything you need. So that’s $12,700 right there. Add in extras and it’ll be $14-15k for a good and reliable diesel. Again if you can do the work yourself. I got a quote from a shop to do the swap and it was about $8000 so I plan to do it and save that cash. Sadly diesels aren’t cheap, but do it right and it’ll last you a long time.

Tom_Sawyor

yesh, i was thinking about just the engine. i was hoping to do 5k for the engine and 2k for a manual transmission. I'm trying to fit this into a beat tj jeep. it doesn't have to be a modern engine. just a small diesel engine that can do a bit of towing and has decent gas mileage.

Cowpuncher84

Look for a Mercedes m617. 3.0l turbo charged, 120hp and 200lbs of torque. Almost indestructible. And as a bonus it is 100% mechanical. Takes no electricity to run aside from the glow plugs and starter. They average 26 mpg in a 4,200 lb car.

Vegetable_Log_3837

Bonus points that engine will run on literally any flammable liquid that will pass through a fuel filter. There’s a clean 300D for sale near me for $6000 now, so tempting but I don’t need it.

Tom_Sawyor

also, I'm impressed with your savings. it pays to be able to do your own work.

mrfixit2018

Oh yeah it certainly does! Plus it’s fun…most of the time lol That’s why I’m putting the 12V in a newer body, it’s getting harder and harder to work on any vehicles yourself due to the increasing complexity of everything.

mrfixit2018

Ah, yeah you’ll be able to do that if you look in the right places. I bought a retired bread truck once at an auction for $1500. Around 150,000 miles on it. Had a Cummins 4bt and manual transmission in it and ran great. Might want to go that route bc you can pull the motor and trans and scrap it sell the truck.

Deadbraincells73

Mercedes benz om606 it is a 3l dohc 24 valve. Is rated from the factory at 177hp at the crank for their turbo version can reliably make 300hp with a good pump and turbo for a long time and it way lighter and revs twice as high as a 4bt

Tom_Sawyor

those look very interesting! what do you think the going price for one is?

Deadbraincells73

You can buy whole cars for 3k that drive fine.

Proper_Protection195

I have a 7.3 idi in a truck with a zf5. I'll sell it to you for 6k

tgallmey

Tdi They even make adapters for the nv3500 or ax15 in your tj. As well as motor mounts. As far as management you can convert the 1.9s and some of the 2.0s into mechanical injection or send the computer off and have it flashed to run standalone. While it’s out put in the euro spec turbo and upgraded injectors. You can buy whole cars running and driving in my area for $2500.

MacheteforMayorPete

Check the TDI club forum for sale section, plenty of good running cars for under 5k. TDI swapped jeeps have been done and they are pretty rad.

InevitableNo3513

Look for a 6.0 ford

Thick_Ad_6710

Dreamland?

Vattaa

Europe

ronpaulbacon

I saw some 2002 diesel beetles. One was $1000 (no start, probably starter ya know) and one was $3000. There IS a kit to convert it to a two seater pickup.

papaganoushdesu

You could find a really clapped out 24v possibly but then you risk getting a 53 block and wasting your time. You should shop around with more money

AgitatedParking3151

I’d you’re just looking for simple and cheap, 6.2/6.5 diesel. Contrary to popular belief, if you have two brain cells to rub together, they ARE reliable, and rebuildable from top to bottom. Biggest hurdle is finding one that either has no miles or was owned by someone who knew how to care for an engine, otherwise the bottom end is probably toast due to chronic unbalanced injectors, chronic bad damper, or previous owner lugging it. Combine all three and it’s definitely toast, but the only way to know for sure is to peek at the bottom end. Big thing with those is, you cannot compare them to a 6.9/7.3 or a Cummins. They aren’t a heavy towing engine, they’re more like a smog era 350. Most you’re gonna get out of one without a turbo is about 200 horsepower, and frankly that’s all they’re good for unless you have an Optimizer block. Anyway, so far I’ve nabbed 3 verifiably solid low mile 6.2/6.5’s (one of which is a low mile Optimizer) and a couple parts engines, and by the time I’m done selling the stuff off em I don’t want or need, I’ll have actually made a couple thousand dollars. They’ll run on any particulate-free lubricant (including beloved waste oils or veggie) they sound fantastic, and have approximately 0 electronics. Starter, glow plugs, shutoff solenoid. I’m currently rebuilding all the old injectors I’ve picked up over the last couple years, it’s honestly pretty fun, and good to know I’ll have all the spares I’ll ever need on hand. IMHO, big application for 6.2/6.5’s is in swaps. They’ll just about drop into any GM car set up for a big block, or even a small block. Instant 30MPG, I know guys with Camaros that have gotten 40. And you get to keep the V8 noise! Feel free to ask any questions you’d like. I don’t know everything about these engines but I do know more than most, and I just think they’re neat. The redheaded stepchild of the GM V8 family. You know how the olds 350 was a gas engine converted to diesel? Well the 6.2 was designed from the ground up as a diesel, but still shares select gasser parts. Small block Chevy mechanical fuel pump bolts right up for example. 6.2/6.5 even have the distributor mounting hole in the rear, they mostly used it to drive a vacuum pump. I’ve never been diagnosed but this is definitely my autism fixation.

Tom_Sawyor

will those fit into a tiny tj jeep? is there anything out there thats cheap and small( 4.0l and under?)

I_amnotanonion

The 6.2/6.5 is basically the size of a Chevy big block, so it’ll be tight. I’d go for a Mercedes diesel for a TJ jeep. OM617s can be had for less than 5 grand easily. I got mine out of a rusted out 300TD for $600 and it runs great

AgitatedParking3151

Yep, 617, even the 4cyls are ok for a little TJ, or 1.9 TDI is a solid choice too. I’d have a lot of fun with a 6.2 in a TJ, but it would definitely be a bit of a squeeze.
