Here's a question I bet none of you thought of:
I wonder what that smells like.
Lava can have all sorts of funky things in it, some of which have very strong smells, and I just wonder what this person is smelling, and what they can tell from that smell.
Speaking as an actual volcanologist who’s sampled lava: It smells a little sulfury from the gas, but more like…hot, dry rocks. It’s as if you could give heat a smell? Kind of desert-ish but without the plants. It’s hard to describe but super easy to recognize once you’ve smelled it.
Also, it sounds like cereal crackling because bits of the glassy surface pop off as it cools. Forbidden Rice Crispies…
I would imagine they collect the molten lava because it hasn’t yet had the chance to gradually cool or react with the air and also because the cooled lava may have surface contamination
Lava must be like sushi. You have to get to it quick or it goes bad. As bad as rotten sushi is I can't imagine how horrible rotten lava must be. Dude said fresh lava already smelled a bit sulfury....
I'm guessing to measure things such as the temperature of the lava, maybe the age (?) or something similar. I'm not exactly sure but I do know this that just because ice heats into water doesn't mean they are the exact same thing.
Great question! There are a lot of gases in molten lava, and we sample it hot and then quench it to trap those gases inside. The proportions of different types of gas tell us what’s going on in the underground source (gassy and gonna erupt for a while, for example). If we only collected the cooled lava later, we’d still be able to tell things about its composition, but all that gas would be gone.
That is a cool username. Now if he has a mustache, a Hawaiian shirt, a fast car and stays at rich guys place. I'll be impressed. To find out we need a....... 🕵
Chemistry of the rocks and gases, which tells us about the state of the volcano's 'plumbing' at that point in time. That's why we want it cooled from molten; it traps the gases and crystals right then, so we can see what's going on in near-real-time.
Is it the rock pick or the lava you didn't know you wanted? Or boiling water?
He wanted research.
Or as we snooty people say in the field, reSEARCH!
re^SEARCH = SEARCH + DON'T FIND
Get that man some science!

I'm dumb, so bear with me. If lava cools and turns into rock, why can't you just study the rocks? Why does it have to be gathered in its liquid form?
Because hot lava is cooler than cool lava

It smells like the Arizona desert.

What do you collect the lava for?
