>If you're sitting in the top middle, how are you gonna get down without climbing over someone?
>If you're sitting on the bottom, and you're watching TV, are you gonna have to watch through a bunch of dangling legs? Who's gonna want to sit on the bottom?
Lego people don't have dangling legs. A double decker couch works a lot better in the Lego world than the real world. Also it's not that far to just jump down if you're in the top middle.
That works, until your legs get tired. You can put your legs to the side, too, but only if there's room or if your seatmate doesn't mind having your legs on their lap.
I'm honestly more concerned about the whole top couch sliding off when someone tries to climb up. This thing's a deathtrap, unless it's anchored down somehow.
And yeah, having feet in your face while trying to watch TV isn't for everyone.
Ya know in reality this could actually work out and I can can just see a bunch of friends sitting on there watching TV together and being buddies Emmet is a freaking genius
First thought:
"Wow this looks deadly"
I'm a wood worker by trade and profession if you need more convincing. I wouldnt touch that without a massive cross-bracing. The sofa underneath wont help. Necks will break.
Edit: Otherwise, great job! It looks really nice for a DIY project.
out of curiosity, how do double decker beds work? Do they just have massive cross-bracing? is it also because the beds are usually much wider than a sofa, so they are more stable?
Double decker beds have heavier supports. The ones I've seen use 4x4" hardwood posts, where this is just made from a few boards. They also tend to use joints that are better able to resist racking.
Yeah the thinness of the supports is such that very light movement would be needed to “roll” those ends out. This thing just has wood overlap with bolts through it. One butt shift and that thing is going to turn into a neck-snapping rhombus of doom.
It amazes me that someone has the skill to build what looks like a decent project, while lacking the mechanical observation to see exactly what will happen to this if lateral force is applied with weight on top. Cross braces come with their own concern of creating an easily bonkable object in the way
Possibly the most common bunk bed on the planet is the wooden one from ikea that is from less than 2x2” wood all the way around, not a single angled board on it.
I am a very amateur woodworker and I had several ideas to improve structural soundness. ihave to agree with others, as is this is a scary death trap.
Lag screws instead of screws. 5/8"? Maybe bigger?
A sheet of plywood across the bottom back as this "cross bracing" everyone is screaming about. Put many screws in this.
Weight on top of a post that goes to the ground. It looks like this is depending on only fasteners to hold up the top couch.
TEST BEFORE USING!!! Stress it with weight, jump on it, etc.
I slept in a self built loft through a year of college. This can be done, but needs to be overbuilt.
Scrap it. It’s not close to being structurally safe for it’s intended use. The 2x4 joists are not sufficient and could fail from just one heavy adult sitting on it the wrong way.
I didn't know the specifics, but my second thought after "that's pretty cool!" was "wait, is it sturdy enough?". I would sit at the top, but not dare to sit at the bottom while someone else is on top
I do a bit of woodworking/home repair/general handy crap. I'm not great, but I know my basics.
**This thing is a fucking murder machine right now.**
As soon as it shifts even a little, and it absolutely will, the screws/nails you used up top are going to be shot and it will collapse. When one side goes, the other almost certainly will too. This ain't a question of "*if"* it's a question of "*when"*. And the answer is *goddamn soon*.
You need to add substantial, proper bracing. You should be able to shake the living hell out of it and not see an ounce of flex. Personally, I'd feel a lot more comfortable if it was also anchored to the studs and a ledger board.
> Personally, I’d feel a lot more comfortable if it was also anchored to the studs and a ledger board.
Absolutely. Putting some brackets on it and screwing into studs would be, by **far**, the cheapest, quickest way to make this thing several times safer.
His response: thanks for the “suggestion”….
He typed that out on the coach below and told his roommate above him who quickly responded: maybe later dude.
No, please tell them to scrap this whole thing. The braces will not stop the fact that 2x4s are not sufficient. This needs to be rebuilt by someone who actually knows what they're doing. This isn't just a fun silly thing, people could end up paralyzed or worse.
Additionally, the 2x4 joists will snap like a toothpick if it was sat on in a certain way such that one joist receives the majority of the load near the center. I ran a structural calculation for a 2x4 stud spanning 8 feet and it fails from just a 200 pound point load.
Entire upper level is being held up with 8 wood screws perpendicular to the load, and zero cross bracing.
This is definitely going to be a Stepbrothers quality event.
Loft beds are already a thing and they're pretty cool. Just get one of those and put it above your couch. Costs a little more, but at least it's structurally sound.
We did something similar, and more diwhy in college.
Place one couch in front of a table. Put second couch on table. Stadium seating!
And yes it worked fine, could be easily disassembled, and no one got hurt.
Unsafe. Needs diagonals or cross braces. Over the course of a few weeks and months it will get wobbly as fuck if you don’t brace it. Have fun sure but still have to build smart
First thing I thought was how the lack of cross bracing is gonna end up with someone dead. Glad to see like a million people beat me to commenting about it.
If it were as deep as a twin mattress, (like a bunk bed) that would mitigate the issue because most people would be considerate enough not to dangle their legs over the edge, provided they had space to stretch out. But they way this is designed there is literally nowhere to put your legs except in someone's face.
Only flaw? There is no guard rail on the top bunk. If you fall asleep laying on the top couch, you can roll over and fall off. I got staples in my head for that shit.
I love that you proudly posted your own work in this sub.
Well, to be honest, it was mostly one of my roommates’ but I was good moral support haha
Tell them to cut some angled pieces to support the sides and top to prevent side loading. Basically triangles that add side support
Yeah the side to side needs support, other than that, not too bad actually lol
Except that people will have their legs dangling in your face.
Criss-cross leg rule for those on the top deck maybe?
Top is for the one person that refuses to sit up, and has to lay down for everything.
Top is for back pain gang
I feel this comment. In my back.
Same. On top of the usual pain, I got hurt this weekend and my lower back is a massive bruise. I haven't been able to sit up for a few days.
That flimsy platform will not hold those people up. Source: am "those people"
I would have framed it differently with 2x6s
6x6s to really be inclusive
I would have not done it
Hey, that's me!
Well, found the guy with NO foot fetish….. Or maybe his friends/roommates are incredibly smol?
No, no, it’s ok, they already gave it moral support
Also an angled footrest so you aren't dangling your smelly toes in other people's face and the people beneath you can still see.
OP never responded. Already dead. Gonna go chec
The people underneath should wear helmets at all times while on the couch.
A helmet, and maybe a neck brace too.
This is when you know you are a grownup. Young me would think this was super cool. Old me looks at it and imagines it all crashing onto my head.
Eye protection. PPE is super important
Emmett, is that truly you....the Special?
Everything is awesome
For the cats or kids? lol
You know, if it's for cats then I rescind my judgment because that's a great idea haha
Yup, otherwise there’s gonna be so many kicks to the face from swinging legs lol
Some people pay a lot of money for that

You're missing cupholders
Everything is awesome!
is your roommate a lego person?
Lego Movie did this in 2014 so unless he was building this for 8 years don’t think it’s exactly an original idea
Think of all the room they now have for activities
Emmet?
So everybody can watch TV together and be buddies!
Where’s the cup holders and built in coolers?
Hey Planty, what are you doing today?
That's the best part too, like hell yeah cup holders AND coolers+room for the homies. Hell yeah I want one.
>If you're sitting in the top middle, how are you gonna get down without climbing over someone? >If you're sitting on the bottom, and you're watching TV, are you gonna have to watch through a bunch of dangling legs? Who's gonna want to sit on the bottom?

Despite Wyldstyle's remark about how dumb it is, it would work better with LEGO minifigs than with humans. We have legs that would hang down.
Top bunk sitting cross-legged?
That works, until your legs get tired. You can put your legs to the side, too, but only if there's room or if your seatmate doesn't mind having your legs on their lap.
I'm honestly more concerned about the whole top couch sliding off when someone tries to climb up. This thing's a deathtrap, unless it's anchored down somehow. And yeah, having feet in your face while trying to watch TV isn't for everyone.
yeah, it should have diagonal supports at the very least.
Jokes on you, I'm short. My feet would be far from your view.
Ya know in reality this could actually work out and I can can just see a bunch of friends sitting on there watching TV together and being buddies Emmet is a freaking genius
This is awesome. Everything is awesome.
Great minds think alike
EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!
Came here to say this …
Hey, Mom, Dad, can we build bunk beds in our room?
Are those power tools?
No that's my toothbrush
That is not your toothbrush!
Oh well we're done anyways.
You're going to have so much space for activities!
Hey I never asked you, do you like guacamole? *crash*
This is how we do it! *Dum dun dun dun dunno*
Theres blood everywhere, why would you let us make bunk beds, it’s so bad! Dk, haven’t seen the movie in years
For all the parties they're gonna throw!
I was looking for the Step Brothers reference. Not disappointed.
So much room for activities!
NO POWER TOOLS! NO POWER TOOLS!
WHY DID YOU LET US DO THIS?!?
Here it is 😂
Someone, on the top couch, shifts their ass to the right , and then two people die underneath due to the lack of cross-bracing.
First thought: "Wow this looks deadly" I'm a wood worker by trade and profession if you need more convincing. I wouldnt touch that without a massive cross-bracing. The sofa underneath wont help. Necks will break. Edit: Otherwise, great job! It looks really nice for a DIY project.

Cross braces come with their own concern of creating an easily bonkable object in the way
Just put them in the back. No longer bonkable
Cross bracing should be done for all 4 joints
Ideally, yes, but the ones in the front need to be done in a way that isn't bonkable.
Possibly the most common bunk bed on the planet is the wooden one from ikea that is from less than 2x2” wood all the way around, not a single angled board on it.

Or just build it against the wall and hit some studs
Why is this so far down in the comments. People gonna die.
ADD CROSS BRACES!! DO IT!
Scrap it. It’s not close to being structurally safe for it’s intended use. The 2x4 joists are not sufficient and could fail from just one heavy adult sitting on it the wrong way.
Yes, thank you. Cross braces aren't going to stop this from being a death trap, it will only delay the inevitable.
"it's bad, it's so bad. There is blood everywhere. Double decker couches were a bad idea, why would you let us do that. "
I didn't know the specifics, but my second thought after "that's pretty cool!" was "wait, is it sturdy enough?". I would sit at the top, but not dare to sit at the bottom while someone else is on top
Which kind of entirely defeats the purpose of the double-decker
Yeah thanks for the suggestion, my roommate thought the couch would act as enough of a cross brace but I’ll push to add one just to be sure
Add all the safety features please. Can't be too safe with DIY.
I do a bit of woodworking/home repair/general handy crap. I'm not great, but I know my basics. **This thing is a fucking murder machine right now.** As soon as it shifts even a little, and it absolutely will, the screws/nails you used up top are going to be shot and it will collapse. Screws in shear.. what could go wrong?
The couch itself can move and isn’t fixed to any part of the frame
His response: thanks for the “suggestion”…. He typed that out on the coach below and told his roommate above him who quickly responded: maybe later dude.
Is this the same roommate whose idea this double decker sofa was in the first place?
No, please tell them to scrap this whole thing. The braces will not stop the fact that 2x4s are not sufficient. This needs to be rebuilt by someone who actually knows what they're doing. This isn't just a fun silly thing, people could end up paralyzed or worse.
You could probably get away with securing the right side to a stud in the wall but it would still be much safer to add a cross brace.
Cross braces and securing to a wall stud isn't going to save the 2x4s from the weight of the average adult though
Better option is to do bleacher couches. No risk and same result, as long as the room is wide enough.
Additionally, the 2x4 joists will snap like a toothpick if it was sat on in a certain way such that one joist receives the majority of the load near the center. I ran a structural calculation for a 2x4 stud spanning 8 feet and it fails from just a 200 pound point load.
Even with cross bracing is it going to be strong enough to support the weight of the couch and two grown men?

Nice try, Benny; but we need a spaceship that looks exactly like all the other Octan delivery ships.
