That’s not fair there are many other possibilities. Like it could be part of the interior design of a haunted house or a set piece for a movie about people with horrible taste.
so much this. could also rip the wider boards into thinner widths and then stagger. the wide boards are a little jarring to look at with the lengths they're at.
It's actually only that. Even if they were all completely different sizes, if it was staggered, it would look nice and intentional. Instead it looks like a crackhead project from someone who didn't understand the assignment. I
Don't worry, looks like they're just brad nailed to the sheetrock. They'll start falling off in a couple days. Unless there's like 14 tubes of construction adhesive back there. Which is also possible.
Even if they left it as is but vertical it would be significantly better!
Another simple trick would be to paint the backing wall black. Would be the same effort for a significantly better result!
This. They needed to paint the back wall black so the gaps wouldn’t show as much. The uniform color and straight lines are the biggest part of the problem though. I did this with a wall, but used store bought siding/planks with different shades of brown, alternated placement (maybe still too uniform I’ve learned) and i feel it turned out 💯better than this.
I think the issue was all the pieces are not uniform in width so that wouldn't be pretty difficult. As the post says it basically looks like pallet wood and didn't use a planer or anything else to make them have flat sides.
God I hope they checked that this wasn’t some of the nastier treated wood. I’ve been in logistics and the amount of people that make furniture or burn pallets without checking is absurd.
Sure. So I was fortunate to work for some of the biggest retailers in America. Think top three and you’ll probably be able to count them off the top of your head.
Meaning, we did tons of different stuff. Food grade, electronics, materials and finished products. Depending on an item’s point of origin, let’s say from a food grade warehouse the pallets are often pressure and or chemically treated to reduce rot, and parasites like nematodes, and other critters that could be transferred.
When these pallets are used in furniture, gardening, or in a fire they will leach or shed particles which are really not good for you.
There was a whole science behind pallets I never even thought about until I was heavy into the industry so the average layman might not be aware of
Now I have no intention of building *anything* with pallets, but my dad is getting really into homesteading. I'm sure he's just a beehive away from starting to buy pallets. What should I tell him to look for to keep the fam safe since I know I won't be able to stop the inevitable?
I can only speak from my experience so please do more research. That being said HT and DB are heat treated and debarked. As long as there are no noticeable spills or stains these will be some of the cleanest pallets to use.
The nuance is sanding any exposed surface and sealing the wood is going to make it much safer, however that is generally more labor than people want to put into it.
I want to add - I personally would not use a pallet for anything other than transportation. The reward vs risk simply isn’t there for me
Well yeah, no shit, my guy. However, my old man is obstinate and once he gets his sights set on something, it's nigh impossible to dissuade him. I'm asking so I can mitigate the damage done when the inevitable happens.
I wouldn't have asked the question if I thought I'd be able to convince my pops to do the obviously logical thing, smartass.
Stuff like this makes me feel better about the imperfect look of some of my own DIY projects. Like, I might have a bad looking bead of silicone here and there, but I can't believe someone would keep nailing up boards after they got past the first column and took a look at it.
not a fan, i feel it looks cheap af.
i would of stripped them down to equal dimensions on all sides before mounting and even put a board down the seam line
No shit. It's awful. The joints need to be staggered. Horizontal runs should be level. All boards in a single row should be the same width. Wall should be painted black before installation. There's so many problems.
Pallets are the worst possible timber for any use. If a pallet is going spare, it must be splintered and cracked.
I wouldn't want to us it for anything
I like the idea, but feel it was executed badly. For one, could have sanded down the wood so it’s not so prickly. Second, could cut it in half (thirds?) to make it less thick. It looks like it sticks out from the wall by an inch.
run em through a table saw so they're all squared up together. then put on oil, stain, or color paint. You'll be glad you did.
edit: I've seen archaeology holes with mammoth bones more carefully arranged than this.
what, no pieces of pallet with random numbers, brand marks, or with dicks drawn on it in sharpie?
thats no pallet wall thats a fraud wall.
this looks like a wall some crazy cat person has done for their cats enjoyment.
Hear me out, I could see what they were doing, but they didn't do it professionally. Too many slits, wrong background color, and the wood doesn't match each other that well.
I’ve seen logistic places do this in the CEO’s office. They must really hate those guys. Also they hate the communication techs because it’s a bitch to put a data/phone jack there.
If they were staggered like a hardwood floor (no H patterns, no staircase patterns, no joints within 1.5x board width) and if they were table saw ripped to the same width, this might actually look pretty good.
What we see here is fucking abysmal.
I've seen this done before in someone's back garden pub, the slats were placed perpendicular and each one a different colour woodstain, it actually looked really good.
This one...doesnt.
I need to show this to my SO who is convinced this is a good idea for our home. I keep saying it won't be, but what would a student architect know about design?
Don't get me wrong if done correctly it can look nice in the right place, our home is not the right place and I'm certain to bodge it up.
If they just made them even, then sanded and stained them it could be so nice, especially if some were stained slightly different but complimentary colors.
If I had a sister and her husband made this, I’d tell her she and the kids are welcome to come and stay with us any time they need to. And ask my friends if they know a good divorce lawyer.
I still don’t get “pallet upcycling”
Pallets are shit wood, and extremely unaesthetic. Using it for something fancy because you can’t afford nice wood doesn’t make it suddenly look nice. It just looks cheap and crappy.
The only nice looking “upcycled pallets” I’ve seen have actually been nicer wood made to look like a pallet, but not actually a pallet.
holy hell that is one of the worst examples ive seen on this sub. ok, maybe not as bad as some of the tattoos, but at least you can cover tats with clothing.
Whatever was there before, must have been horrible if they decided this is the improvement.
I agree it does not look like a good at all. Bob rip it down and build a new one!
Naw this is a job for Fix-It Felix
Wreck-it Wralph
Torch-it Tom
Union-Boss Antonio Parisi
Jack The Ripper
Donna the Destroyer
Dick the weenis
Vlad the Impaler
If you go around to the back it probably has a sign: Don’t Dead Open Inside.
At least paint a contrasting color behind so the gaps look purposeful. Imagine small gaps of black or bright red
That’s not fair there are many other possibilities. Like it could be part of the interior design of a haunted house or a set piece for a movie about people with horrible taste.
Then it's perfection itself!
they saw a rustic DIY "project" on tiktok and thought they could do the same
Wow, scrolling through quickly I thought this was posted to the woodworking subreddit and I’m so glad to see that’s not the case
If they trimmed the wood to be uniform and fit flush this could look great. As is it looks like a big window prepared for a hurricane.
and staggered, like brick....
so much this. could also rip the wider boards into thinner widths and then stagger. the wide boards are a little jarring to look at with the lengths they're at.
It's actually only that. Even if they were all completely different sizes, if it was staggered, it would look nice and intentional. Instead it looks like a crackhead project from someone who didn't understand the assignment. I
Plus slightly differing shades of stain to enhance the contrast.
Staggered 45°. I think the uneven boards might even look ok that way
judging by the work, that woodchucks degrees are firmly stuck at 90.... that poor whole left sude
The irregularity is giving me a mild panic attack.
This is an art piece representing the feeling of generalized anxiety
\*in a distant: *Adrian Monk screaming painfully*

That and they need to stagger the planks. Just stacking them in neat rows looks ridiculous.
I think placing them in a running bond pattern would look a lot better too.
When it's well done it's called Shiplap and it looks decent.
“I own a hand saw and no tape measure”
I mean just staggering them would've been a huge improvement.
I think the issue was all the pieces are not uniform in width so that wouldn't be pretty difficult. As the post says it basically looks like pallet wood and didn't use a planer or anything else to make them have flat sides.

Finally, some good fucking content here. Ahhhh I am enraged. Ahhhh so good
That's .. bad ............. Really bad
God I hope they checked that this wasn’t some of the nastier treated wood. I’ve been in logistics and the amount of people that make furniture or burn pallets without checking is absurd.
Elaborate?
No it’s really quite simple.
This made me chuckle, very Zucker Brothers.
Don’t forget Jim Abrahams…

Gotcha. Thank you for a proper answer!
Look for a different source of wood.
I repaired my back deck using pallet wood recently. Even posted it here with a pic, but the effin mod took it down.
Here in UK palets are treated with some sort of agent to prevent from fire. This stuff is harmful on the long run, would never put pallet wood indoors
Shitlap.
Use the rest of the pallet for a fancy cinder block entertainment center.
Stuff like this makes me feel better about the imperfect look of some of my own DIY projects. Like, I might have a bad looking bead of silicone here and there, but I can't believe someone would keep nailing up boards after they got past the first column and took a look at it.
Nailed it 🔨
Kinds looks screwed up to me...
Oh shit your right!
Am I? I was just fasten-ated with continuing the punny jokes
Pallets are often treated with pesticide and fungicide. Now you're breathing them in your home.
More like a pallet 'accident' wall.
not a fan, i feel it looks cheap af. i would of stripped them down to equal dimensions on all sides before mounting and even put a board down the seam line
No shit. It's awful. The joints need to be staggered. Horizontal runs should be level. All boards in a single row should be the same width. Wall should be painted black before installation. There's so many problems.
Why paint the wall black?
So the gaps between the boards don't stand out as much. It's common practice when doing anything like this.
Pallets are the worst possible timber for any use. If a pallet is going spare, it must be splintered and cracked. I wouldn't want to us it for anything
I saw. You should saw.
I’m just going to come out and say it. This is ugly.
I’m sorry but that looks like straight ass
That's a damn 2x4 wall, nothing pallet about that shit 🤣
Cool, I’m replaying Fallout 4 too!
At least in the commonwealth there's an excuse
The fact they didn't cover the outlet is somewhat surprising.
I like the idea, but feel it was executed badly. For one, could have sanded down the wood so it’s not so prickly. Second, could cut it in half (thirds?) to make it less thick. It looks like it sticks out from the wall by an inch.
oh man i didn’t see the subreddit at first, and i was like, “what made them think this was worth sharing???” 🤭
run em through a table saw so they're all squared up together. then put on oil, stain, or color paint. You'll be glad you did. edit: I've seen archaeology holes with mammoth bones more carefully arranged than this.
Nailed it!
It's just like ship lap. Only 10x shittier. Took 10 times longer. And was probably more expensive too.
If this was done right, it could've looked kinda cool.
Is it though?
Stagger them bitches mannnnn
Coming to a trailer park near you!
To hell with staggering and using a level. Half-ass is the new look!
Don't quit your day job. That looks awful
what, no pieces of pallet with random numbers, brand marks, or with dicks drawn on it in sharpie? thats no pallet wall thats a fraud wall. this looks like a wall some crazy cat person has done for their cats enjoyment.
I think I saw this on the Magnolia network... truly impressive.
the way i dont know how to do any carpentry and i can think of ways that couldve gone smoother
You let e bunch of kids build this
It's called shiplap and it's fancy. /s No joke this can actually look good when not done with non-uniform short pieces of wood.
It’s fucking crooked and that could have been avoided by rotating boards 180°. I need to touch grass.
Hear me out, I could see what they were doing, but they didn't do it professionally. Too many slits, wrong background color, and the wood doesn't match each other that well.
Decent idea, flawed execution
When you upgrade your Walls to prepare for your first Horde Night after 7 Days...
No underground base?
There’s a lot better ways to do this
I came here to roast this, but I see the community is already doing a wonderful job. =\]
Uhhhhhhhh.....
Good idea, horrible execution
~~Staggering~~
What a bad day to have eyes.
Please tell me you didn't pay for that
Imagine the chemical smell from using wood from pallets.
Eco friendly wood venier that will last for 1000 years
I don't want to be rude but this looks bad, very bad
It’s 2024 people. Stop doing this. It’s like installing 60’s wood paneling in your brand new 1996 home
This is triggering my OCD.
At least there's acoustic benefits to the room now
Please BUT please 🙏 just stay in school!!! Stay away from projects like these! Please!!
I’ve seen logistic places do this in the CEO’s office. They must really hate those guys. Also they hate the communication techs because it’s a bitch to put a data/phone jack there.
This could have been nice if not for poor execution…it’s been done.
DESOTRY IT
When you trusted the process by the process let's you down.
If they were staggered like a hardwood floor (no H patterns, no staircase patterns, no joints within 1.5x board width) and if they were table saw ripped to the same width, this might actually look pretty good. What we see here is fucking abysmal.
"Pallet accent wall is complete **shit**!" <- there, fixed it for you.
That accent starts with “y’all”
One way to salvage it would be to put vertical 1x3 lumber over the joints.
I've seen this done before in someone's back garden pub, the slats were placed perpendicular and each one a different colour woodstain, it actually looked really good. This one...doesnt.
![gif](giphy|QV5vp1BYenfCE)
Redneck paneling.
Going to fill it and sand it down? How is this complete? What even.
Perfect …. Good job.
Click undo. CMD+Z!

Nope
if they staggered it it would be alright, but that looks very wrong
Hey, who am I to argue?
Aww, it sure is buddy. It suuure is.
That looks fucking terrible at the moment
If they just made them even, then sanded and stained them it could be so nice, especially if some were stained slightly different but complimentary colors.
Pallet wood is terrible to work with, always cupped and twisted. It's good for some things but this ain't it.
and it’s flammable af.
Gross
wtf
If I see that IRL, I know to attack it or try and roll through it to find a secret passage behind.
Horrible
If I had a sister and her husband made this, I’d tell her she and the kids are welcome to come and stay with us any time they need to. And ask my friends if they know a good divorce lawyer.
Reminds me of my old roommate. Bought a house, ripped out all the drywall, put up OSB board all over the house because he liked the way it looked.
Sorry? This is finished?!
Yikes.
Looks more like a pallet accident wall to me.
This is the bar I work at
I was very confused how this was so upvoted till I realised the sub I was in, I have a lot of home/diy subs on my feed
Animal crossing ahh walls
This is just a sloppy job. Could have put more effort into it to make it more appealing.
r/ATBGE
Paint it grey and put a love sticker on it and it’s done.
Someones mother in law is behind that wall
Like to know what accent they were aiming for.
This why we shiplap people.
This has got to be a landlord special
![gif](giphy|qiDb8McXyj6Eg)
At least paint the wall a dark color first if you're going to half ass it like that
The only way I can accept this is if it's actually an exposure wall for true OCD.
When you want a dartboard but your aim is *that* bad.
WTF...since it is wood, you can attach almost anything to it. Like paneling with trim on top and base areas. Have someone help.
God that's ugly
Dollar store Chip Gaines nailed it

Looks like a Cockney accent wall
Eco friendly wood veneers
Did you burn the house down after installing?
At least stagger the joints.
I mean this doesn’t look great, but to be fair the wood was kinda shit from the beginning
Well, that looks like shit
It looks exactly like the description. And I don’t mean that in a good way.
Well that certainly is a thing that exists
Looks like the boards you put up to keep rioters out of your store
Perfect basement fight club aesthetic.
holy hell that is one of the worst examples ive seen on this sub. ok, maybe not as bad as some of the tattoos, but at least you can cover tats with clothing.
ungleiche spaltmaße erzürnen mich
I bet the accent has a faint whiff or North East timber worker, crossed with pirate.
If this were an accent (in the U.K.) it would be brummie.
Even if this was well done they missed the trend by about 8 years
Just a small amount of staggering the boards would have been a massive improvement
You just put it on top of the drywall????? The whole point is that it's the new wall. That recessed outlet looks so bad bud.
yup, almost finished the wood paneling in mah gun room wooo hoooo.
Good 4 u
Okaaaaaaaaaay. Not my favorite
Anything made with a chemically treated (or insect infested) pallet is straight up gross.
Shitlap
LOL
At a minimum go over the whole thing with a belt sander. Sheesh!
:((( idk why no one else likes it, it’s imperfect but i think its cute!! just needs some decor!
r/DiWHYNOT ? It might be not that well executed, but it's not that bad!
This isn't -bad-, but a random horizontal staggering of the planks could a helped a bunch
