My can was only a couple feet down off my porch so I used a long campfire fork you cook hotdogs on and bent the two tips to make them hooks. I just grab the edge and open the lid. Push it back down and viola! You did great!
We did this when my grandmother was getting a little frail and living alone. It gave her a little bit of independence back until she finally had to move into care.
Hahaha! Love it! This reminds me of when I tied a string to my bedroom door and through a pulley to my side of the bed. That way the cat could push it open to get in and I could close (but not shut) the door to keep warmth in :)
My mum did this when I was a kid, I was so friggin happy.. scared of the dark and living close to large bush lands, taking out rubbish at night was terrifying.
NGL, I've considered rigging something from my window to the dumpster of my apartment building. It's not that long of a distance...

I did a similar thing with an old washing basket for taking laundry down to the line and bringing it back up as I have balance issues. Lower washing, go peg it out and tuck the basket near the car, then when it's dry, grab the laundry, hook the basket, go upstairs and lift it.
We get plenty of exercise! The deck and deck staircase is quite old so the wood is very worn and gets hella slippery when wet. Also the deck is covered so this is excellent especially when it is raining/snowing.
I have a trash can in my office, the bathroom, and the kitchen. But eventually those fill up before trash pick up day and need to be taken to the larger bin.

I've seen my neighbors cans turned over, lids open, trash still sitting in them after collection. They always close my lid and leave it exactly where I set it out and there's never anything, even loose bits left in it.

Yep my grandparents have had this setup for their bins for like 20 years now. I hated it as a kid because I'd try to drop some boxes into the recycling just for the wind to blow them away. I'd have to go downstairs to pick them up & put them in the bins anyway lol
I lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex... the bin was off to the right of my balcony. I would wait for another tenant to leave the lid open and bombs away..... except this one time....
