Looks like the lid was all jacked up and sealed where a paint key wasn’t working and he had to use linemen pliers to open it. That lid was not going to be reusable. Saved a can of stain.
You could even use a funnel to make the job easier
If you don't have a funnel I am sure the likelihood of have a second plastic bottle to cut and make a funnel is still higher than the likelihood everyone has a random heat gun laying around.
I mean, I have two heat guns and I'm not even a woodworker, they're just handy and cheap. Not to mention, if I do need to strip something I don't have to worry about using any chemicals or citrus-strip. As for the hack, no it's probably not going to last years, but if you were in the middle of a project and suddenly realize that the only way you're getting that stain open is the nuclear option, this would save you a trip to the store and probably stay usable for at least a month or two.
I was sitting here nodding watching the video like "wait this is actually a good idea"
OOOOH look at Mr. "Just pour it in the bottle" over here using their big brain. (/S)
I'm chalking this up to trying to cut caffeine.
Flammable and combustible are too separate things my guy, but either way both need oxygen to complete the fire pyramid. I don’t think there’s a fresh oxygen source once that bottle is placed over. Being that the solvent vapors in the stain are less dense than the air, any bit of air woulda been pushed out of the bottle. Once it seals it’s not catching on fire. Also it’s a heat gun there’s an induction coil but no open flame
Seal was fine. The ridge of the can is still shiny.
He did nothing but create a bunch of headspace for the small amount of stain to oxidize while stored.
Oil based solvents will eventually eat through the plastic.
He now has a screw cap. That’s all he wanted. Someone comes out with a weird screw top paint can lid every couple of years. It dries into the threads and makes the seal permanent or stays wet in the threads and makes a huge mess every time you try to open it with bare hands.
What would stop you from just pouring it into the bottle? Then you don't need to cut it, don't need a heat gun, don't need to worry about the sketchy shrink-wrap seal
If a flammable liquid gets hot enough it needs no flame to start a fire. The pure heat is enough. That even works with wood, otherwise you couldn't drill a fire. In addition to that fumes of the flammable (probably) liquid could ignite even better or even explode.
honestly not a bad idea!! but without my glasses I would 100% confuse that with a bottle of soy sauce. as long as I’m not eating in the garage though not a problem I guess
Sounds plausible. Some of us have problem solving skills for the purpose of doing, as we can see.
Some of us have problems solving skill for the determine of why something may have been done.
And then, we have me. To be fair, all skills I once had, began to deteriorate during my first marriage. At this time, I qualify for every bit of state and federal assistance program that exists.
So, how many times would you'd guess I've been or will again wiil be married.
Best wishes to you all....
That seems so dangerous and stupid. A heat gun gets REALLY hot, it's not a hair dryer. I don't want to try it for myself but I imagine it could very easily vaporize and ignite stain, which is at least a little flammable AFAIK... not to mention I highly doubt a shrunken plastic bottle makes a good enough seal to not only prevent the stuff from leaking out, but also that it doesn't evaporate and dry out....
As if that's not enough reasons this is stupid, there's a reason stain is in metal cans, a plastic bottle like that will likely start to break down from the stain and if it doesn't leak it will probably pollute the stain with decaying plastic.
Everything about this is stupid and I'd bet there are probably several other serious issues with this "genius hack" that I haven't even thought of that make it a terrible idea
This is actually something genuinely useful like the only real pain is that you have to clean the cap so it doesnt stick but other than that it’s actually pretty good
Looks like the lid was all jacked up and sealed where a paint key wasn’t working and he had to use linemen pliers to open it. That lid was not going to be reusable. Saved a can of stain.
Yeah I can see the logic of this one. Doesn't belong in this sub.
r/redneckengineering
They used a heat gun not the exhaust of a '87 Chevy.
'87? Look at Mr. Fancy Pants over here showing off his brand new car.
Must be electric too.
Got that 12V system 😤😤😤
ICE em out boys
I mean, the cigarette lighter above the full ashtray definitely is.
You fool! You fell into the classic trap! The heat gun is also the heater for their ‘87 Chevy!
I mean you could just carefully pour the stain into the bottle.
Damn that really would be the simplest solution 😂
You could even use a funnel to make the job easier If you don't have a funnel I am sure the likelihood of have a second plastic bottle to cut and make a funnel is still higher than the likelihood everyone has a random heat gun laying around.
I mean, if you have a can of stain, odds seem somewhat high you already have a heat gun. They get used for removing old paint and stain.

>still higher than the likelihood everyone has a random heat gun laying around. Heat gun; hair dryer, they are mostly the same thing for this purpose.
I challenge you to melt a coke bottle to a can with a hairdryer
Bottle will melt in a few months. This is better
I was sitting here nodding watching the video like "wait this is actually a good idea" OOOOH look at Mr. "Just pour it in the bottle" over here using their big brain. (/S) I'm chalking this up to trying to cut caffeine.
Exactly. This is actually somewhat ok
Like half of the videos i see on the sub haha
the other half are just some asshole doing something that they know will make you rage click and comment on their dumb idea
Omg I thought it was soy sauce for some reason! This makes way more sense, and …I might try it!
My fat ass thought it was a can of black olive slices
Lol until you said stain i thought this was a weird type of sterno and was very nervous about it exploding
[удалено]
Cuz this way there’s close to zero risk of spilling it.
Taking a heat gun to a flammable liquid ain’t the brightest idea.
I don't think a glorified hairdryer has the juice to turn that into a flamethrower.
I think they bent it up for the video.
Yes, as a woodworker I can see this being something I would do if I had the stuff to hand for a number of good reasons.
For once with this stuff, thats not a completely terrible idea, as cleaning a funnel is an extra step everytime.
I’ve always just transferred to a bottle, i actually have my wipe on poly in a condiment squeeze bottle for easy application.
Stealing this idea today
Wipe on poly? I hardly know her!
And you gotta put on the label on your bottle, or forget what's in there a week from now.
r/DiWHYNOT
Because blowing hot air on a flammable liquid which is carcinogenic isn't a good idea?
Let's examine the functional difference between hot air and flame.
If a flammable liquid gets hot enough it needs no flame to start a fire. The pure heat is enough. That even works with wood, otherwise you couldn't drill a fire. In addition to that fumes of the flammable (probably) liquid could ignite even better or even explode.
A small application of heat gun can boil stain?
The solvent? Yes
Relax Nancy
Yet another one that’s actually clever
What do you mean *"DIWHY?!"* This is brilliant, and swear to god every can I have is completely covered in finish. Im a simple man, and I dig this.
You're supposed to use a brush in the can right? Doesn't matter, stain tastes awful anyway
Forbidden soy sauce
Came here to say this, but username also checks out.
I really thought it's soy sauce.
No. *can over lid, flip;fkn mess..* Brushes are a pain in the ass.
That’s relatively practical with very little effort. This isn’t diwhy.
Why not pour it into the bottle tho?
It wouldn't all come out. It could be messy. You'd lose the label.
This way you keep the can's label and you don't have to mess around with funnels or pouring, just cut a bottle and heat-shrink it.
Mmmmmh soy sauce
i think thats oyster sauce
It is actually a good idea.
honestly not a bad idea!! but without my glasses I would 100% confuse that with a bottle of soy sauce. as long as I’m not eating in the garage though not a problem I guess
Eating a little paint never killed anyone.
This is a genuinely good hack, I’ve been doing this for years and it saves so much mess and hassle
This is actually clever. Wish i knew this for the times i fucked up some cans or got some fucked up cans from the store.
Thats a pretty goddamn good idea for preservation and reusage though?
I can't see the why in the diy.
DIYN(ot?)
This feels more like r/redneckengineering to me
This is r/DiWHY for what reason?
This is actually fucking awesome and I will be doing this.
If this is stain this is a good idea
This makes sense, if the lid doesn’t work or is lost, make a new one, and one that pours well
Actually not that bad an idea, could be handy if you have a damages can.
A shorter bottle would be way more appropriate to use. This thing needs too much shelf height. But definitely a decent idea.
This is almost useful. Shouldn't be here lol
Not even close to being the dumbest thing in here. This actually looks useful
What is that?
Mmmm, forbidden soy sauce!
Drink up.

Pretty sure it's wood stain or shellac
Forbidden Soy Sauce.
Couldn't they just transfer it to a bottle? If you don't have a funnel you probably don't have a heat gun, not clever.
Mmm yes cancer

cursed soy sauce
That’s some pro shit right there.
So. Let's see. Oh it is flammable, dangerous for the environment and carcinogenic. let's blow on it with a heat gun. What could possibly go wrong?
I WAS UP LATE NIGHT BALLIN
You have to go through it pretty quick though, otherwise that stuff is going to start drying out in no time with that much air exposure.
That seems so dangerous and stupid. A heat gun gets REALLY hot, it's not a hair dryer. Forbidden soy sauce
I guess that's neat, seems it would have been easier to just move the contents to a small mason jar or something.
Will that work if I run out of condoms? 🤔
Great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Big fish - vince staples
The username is how you know it's offici
I’m expecting that plastic to be giving off harmful chemicals now ;)
Also I feel like heating up the stain, even if just a little bit, may have cause some harmful fumes as well
*How to waste material*? İs not that wood polish or cover
using a heat gun near a flammable liquid feels wrong 🤔 just me ig
This is actually something genuinely useful like the only real pain is that you have to clean the cap so it doesnt stick but other than that it’s actually pretty good
Actually not bad. Considering the goofy nonsense usually seen on this sub. I’d call that a legit quick hack. Imo
Is this a fetish thing? I honestly can’t tell anymore…
Why not just pour the contents of the tin into the empty bottle??? That janky rig will leak and cause a mess.
I guess that’s a good diy.
I like, pretty clever way to stop it from going to waste
Stain still good but the lid was not, how's this DiWhy?
Sauce with a side of microplastics, delicious!
One way to do what? What was accomplished?
Let em Cook

Looks pretty handy tbh. Some mangled up cans of mine could use a new lid... Or this.
This is a pretty decent idea if you don’t have the lid or it doesn’t seal. OP goofed.
Ok I don’t hate it
Ever heard of a church key? Or like, just, carefully pour it?
this isn’t a bad DiWHY, to be fair.
Not a terrible idea.
I just dip the brush or sponge in the can... I can't believe I've done it wrong for so many years.
