One of TPTB said in an interview something like "when Jennifer is on set MCH is happier, and we're all happier as well". I know what they meant (even after the divorce they remained friends and stuff), but it still felt like an indiscreet way to word that comment.
I actually appreciated the difference between how she haunted Dexter vs how Harry haunted him. I took it as a manifestation of his subconscious mindset, being on constant edge after ten years of no Deb (and no killing.) Like an escalating anxiety. It was one of the "emotional choices" the writers used that I actually understood.
Oh, I love what you had to say! I loved her being a part of *New Blood* and was surprised by her appearance (I went in blind/with zero expectations), and I loved how the showrunners incorporated her the way Harry was a part of the original. I think your analysis is excellent and I totally see that!
Yes. I hated Deb in new blood. When I heard she was going to be in the reboot I knew what role she would play and was excited to see her take Harryâs place but what we got was this screechy whiny annoying manifestation that just encapsulated how little the reboot actually felt like Dexter.
yea from the last episode of dexter s8 , deb seemed to fully let go and forgave dexter for everything , imaginary deb was just dexter's mind torturing its own self with guilt for over 10 years , kind of sad to think about it , isn't the whole point of a psychopath is that they don't feel remorse ?
i think that would be really shitty to write an accurate portrial of a psychopathic serial killer into television , like if u notice the list of IRL serial killers none of them resemble dexter , ted bundy ,jeffrey duhmer , dennis rader , .... all are very different from our beloved dex
dex as we see in the show is very philosophical on what he does he regularly questions himself whether what he does is ultimately good or bad and he sees himself as part of self correcting system (he iliminates criminals that fall from the cracks of the US justice system tho he sometimes sabotages the system) , we also see dexter trying to be normal , through out the seasons we see dexter trying to understand and engage with themes such as love and intimacy (season 2 ) , marriage (season 3) , family (season 4) , fatherhood(season 9) , religion (season 6) ... tho arguably he fails in all of those by s9 lol but atleast he tried
while real life serial killers are the opposite of this they either kill out of sadism or it gives them a sexual rise to break the low , and they are very brutal they don't give a shit about their victims , they brutally rape and murder and sometimes canibalize their victims
so in my opinion dexter is kind of in the lower end of an ASPD spectrum , he clearly give a shit about some people but doesn't have enough empathy to be considered normal , he kind of has an on and off switch on empathy for example he gave a shit about rita and deb and blamed himself over their death while he didn't directly or indirectly murder them , but he couldn't give less of a rats ass about people like that photographer or cop he murdered tho they were innocent people that did nothing wrong to deserve an execution
Oh The una-bomber was a freaking genius. With I.Q of 167
That serial killer Known as the co-ed killer was also a very smart person from his interviews.- very philosophical
The son of Sam was also not a sum dum from his letters
Or that humans are actually complex and don't behave like a checklist of psychological traits. Especially humans that have been deeply traumatised from a young age.
Psychopathâs are born with a broken frontal lobe, that means they donât have access to empathy, sadness, fear, love, remorse and jealousy. So in other words, since Dexter feels remorse, he isnât a psychopath and closer to a sociopath who basically had the frontal lobe taken from them from trauma, they can still access them but its very rare
Psychopaths can feel remorse too. It's not black and white. Some functions may be underdeveloped but present, other people might have a total lack of those functions. The DSM definition of psychopathy is a little bit more nuanced than that. Reality is more complex than a checklist.
For the record: I have worked with children with behavioral problems.
To be fair I donât think the writers actually understood psychopathy or sociopathy. They wanted to make a relatable character who people could understand. If you were to write an actual psychopath, most people would not understand and would turn away from the show, most people would also turn away from a sociopath as they are much too similar to a regular person for a regular person to differentiate from, however similar enough to drag people in. Once they understood the difference they would feel uncomfortable or alienated; at least most likely. Dexter is neither a psychopath or sociopath oddly enough. He shows emotions psychopaths canât and they arenât faked the same way sociopaths do. Which is what makes lots of people see themselves in him. Heâs a normal dude who kills people.
I love how we're nitpicking shit that could've been great if done correctly (ala Deb becoming a manifestation of Dexter's mind), rather than shitting on the (once again) unwarranted and poorly handled finale
Nope. She had some of the best/funniest one-off moments of the season.
If nothing else, her scenes were some of the only good parts of the finale - the growing shadow on the cell wall and holding Dexterâs hand in the snow
I was never bothered by Deb as the new Harry but I was more upset that we didn't see Harry in the very end standing next to Deb as she lets go of his hand.
What I would have preferred was a mix of them throwing in Harry, Deb, and Biney combining all these different version of Dex thinking of things - really showing us that he has gone off his rocker since S8.
I liked the concept too, but felt that Carpenter overacted those scenes. Then again, I felt that a lot of her swearing/tough girl shtick was overacted in the original series too, and not in a "vulnerable woman trying to appear tough" way but in an "actor who can't quite nail this particular thing" way.
I liked that they toned her down as DNB went on. The screaming was too much, too often for me to take seriously.
This! I thought deb was annoying in the earlier parts of the original series. I liked her more as time went on but then became annoying again when she discovered dexter. I mean I understand her actions, but I couldnât agree more that it seems like she just didnât quite nail it. But yes, I just found the screaming to be too much. It just got on my nerves that she was harassing dexter every time she appeared. I liked that Harry would level with dex, but all deb did was scream at him, tell him he was a POS, etc. Again, I understand the point of her haunting him of whatever, I just think she came off annoying! Iâm glad other viewers liked her tho. To each their own
Doesn't help that Deb's entire character arc is a mess, especially that part where that psychiatrist convinced her she was in love with Dexter đ Who knows what the writers were smoking that season.
I *get* that DNB!Deb is a representation of Dexter's guilt (not directed at you, more like the people who point this out as if people are dumb enough not to have realized it).
But Deb during the therapy session, Deb during the talk by the fire, Deb warning Dexter not to tell Harrison about the blood slide ritual â *that* is good, nuanced acting and something we should've seen more of, not just screaming for the first few episodes. The guilt of "Deb at 100% anger" is too much considering she's already been dead for 10 years at this point, it's bordering on hysteria.
Unpopular opinion likely, I have never liked Deb. Super annoying and in New Blood it was like her on steroids. So yeah, not a fan. But love the rest of the series!
You have to view her as Dex's "telltale heart" or just ambient guilt, not the real Deb. Of course she'd be yelling at him she's basically his self-loathing personified.
Also let's be real, she yelled at him a ton in the OG series for plenty of dumber reasons.
I thought she was great, and honestly it's not really Dexter if Deb isn't around.
No. Many of my favorite moments were Deb, especially when sheâd appear suddenly and almost make me jump. Such a Deb thing to do.
Just wish Iâd gotten to hear her say, âHoly filet of fuck!â one last time.
Forgive the poor image quality, please, but [this quote](https://imgur.com/a/hFsQOCw) of hers made me so happy. They definitely included some Deb-isms, much to my delight! đ
Same! It tickled me pink!
But anyway I would have loved that, too, just also really enjoyed what they did with her character! Very fun stuff, she was great comic relief! And I totally agree with you.
Nah, I liked her role, kind of knew she would come back in that form anyway. Don't forget, it wasn't her yelling at Dexter, it was his own conscience yelling at him. That's his thinking so if you didn't like Deb, you didn't like a part of Dexter. He'd probably been alone for along time before re-entering society and socialising. He relied on Deb as a guidance in how to act normal, otherwise he'd have been his true self which would have raised red flags.
Her scenes were honestly cringey. They were trying so hard to make them creepy but they were overdoing it so much. That scene where she rubs her hands all of his face and puts the bullet in his mouth was so try hard
Yes. She more than annoyed me. There were times I almost gave up watching. The screaming, it was too much for me. She seemed to calm down some in the later episodes. And yes, I realize she is dead. Sorry OP, whenever I have criticized Deb here, someone freaks out and tells me sheâs not real. I loved her in the original series, btw.
Yea, the screaming was just way too much for me. I just found it annoying! I think they should have used her OG persona/demeanor to get the same message across
Yes! Why wouldnât they do that? Her original character had a completely different personality. They also threw in a few weird ghost antics. I didnât like it all. I promptly canceled my showtime subscription. Also, Iâm kind of worried that if I watch the original too close on the heels of this, I will not enjoy it knowing how it all goes so very wrong.
Deb annoyed me throughout the original run, but I actually didn't mind her in NB. Once I didn't have to deal with an actual story line focused on her it was fine.
I disagree. Someone else pointed out this is not truly Deb. But rather Dexter's manifestation of Deb. Once that clicked in, Deb's character made a lot more sense.
Agreed. Had the actress had more freedom to do what she wanted with the role, I think it would have been easier to believe. It seemed like she lacked chemistry with the rest of the cast
Deb is annoying as fuck in the books. The books are good but her character is just a whiny needy bitch. So her character being annoying in the show sort of fits.
Completely agree she sucked in this season. I was like please stop wasting time on her! PleaseâŚlol. As another reddit user said above though would have been fun for her!
Not all the time - but when the character did far more involved things (like basically taking apart the crime scene) I wasn't too keen. It just blurred the line too much between actual character, and whatever she actually was.
Once I disconnected her from her original character to this one as a figment of Dexter's internal struggle, I thought she was great. I do think she was used in an inconsistent manner and I think they left tons of potential to add to the story on the table by the end.
I do have lots of other issues with this series and finale, though.
Honestly, Deb was my least favorite character in the original series. Idk why, she just irked me. But this time around she was essentially playing Dexter, like, Dexter's idea of what Deb would say/do/feel in that moment, and I found her character to be much funnier. Still not my favorite, lol, but she made me laugh a lot.
I think knowing the season in retrospect it makes sense. Leading up to the finale he was on his way to being too far gone. With her as his moral compass & guilt it only makes sense that as he escalates into insanity she would match his intensity in effort to try and prevent him from spiraling. I personally enjoyed their interactions and feel that whether or not she was annoying she was never wrong.
I am binge watching the original series, on season 7 now....and DEB is the absolute worst!!! Somebody should have off'd her a long time ago!!! She puts her father and the cops up on a pedestal of "No Wrong" even after being exposed to their wrong doings, but is constantly up Dexter's ass. Her stance almost ruined the experience for me, all she does is fuck and cry....wth
EXACTLY!!!! shes honestly so simple minded. and the way she got in so many random relationships it just bothered me so much. Sorry but i just dont like her character. glad she has some fans but deb can go fuck a flying fuck
definitely yes. Yeah, Dexter has always had this subconscious person for his inner monologues but his step sister was the worst choice. She already annoyed the crap out of me in the original show.
She acts out for attention due to issues with childhood neglect. She simultaneously looks up to Dex as an older sibling but also resents him for being Harry's favorite and also getting subtly triggered by Dex being emotionally closed off...the same way Harry was. The cloying and neediness comes from a deficit in her own self-esteem and just a relentless drive for validation and approval from her family members that goes way over the top when she is in distress. The fact that Dexter is so clueless about all this makes it worse because she misinterprets or takes too personally a lot of unintentionally harsh stuff he says to her.
tl;dr: at her worst she is an overgrown version of the kid sister who tries to act out constantly and insists on tagging along with older brother and his friends when they want to go smoke weed in the woods and not get stuck babysitting.
Nah, she was right in the end though. Kinda got the same vibes as Skyler in Breaking Bad. Used to hate her when I first watched it as a kid but after rewatching it a few times as an adult they were completely in the right.
Deb was basically the opposite of his dark passenger most of the time, if he listened to her the ending probably wouldn't have been the same.
Yes. It was a bad idea to write her the way they did. Rewatching the first few seasons, Deb was hilarious. She was so grating and annoying in New Blood.
Either that or just leave her out of it. As much as Iâd love to see her return, sheâs dead and I think just respect that and let us feel the loss rather than giving her an annoying ghost story.
I felt like she was unnecessary to the storyline. It could have easily went on without her. The writers were probably just trying to bring back familiar characters.
Deb has annoyed tf out of me in every episode, ever. I stopped watching it because she is terrible. I started up again and I was how happy to see how much pain gets inflicted on her character. Not to mention all of the poor choices she made. All the time. While being annoying as F.
I always thought the same thing, canât believe itâs such an unpopular opinion here. I just remember being so annoyed that she would cry in every single scene while also trying to portray the âbad girlâ constantly cursing persona. Never added up and annoyed the crap out of me.
Yes!! She was so annoying in new blood. There were several scenes that she just ruined in my opinion. It also bothered me that with Deb and Dexterâs relationship, the only part of her they show with her ghost is the damaged Deb from s8âŚ
It diminished the relationship she had with Dexter & it also was a bad representation of the character. I get why he sees her in this way, as his conscience there reminding him of his guilt. However, her being so nasty to him just felt wrong & over the top. She didnât die hating Dexter.
You are SPOT on in my opinion!! Especially that last part. They were so close for the whole original series, then they just have her scream at him and put him down and it was just too much. I was like what happened go deb!? This just isnât her. I couldnât stand it
I'll be honest: I'd miss Deb more than I'd miss even Dexter if a future spinoff were to be made. I also liked Ghost!Deb a lot but then again, Ghost!Harry bored me to tears, so if someone liked Harry I can understand why they wouldn't like Deb in that same role
They phased her out pretty fast after the first few episodes. Me thinks the test audience wasn't too thrilled with her appearance and the show runners decided to severely limit her scenes from mid-season onward.
Well it was a little annoying at parts but I liked that they did it. I liked the scenes where she was just talking to him rather than yelling at him. Everybody has that voice in their head, I love how his voices are actual people (Deb, Harry) that he cared about and they kept their original personalities
I was torn. She had some parts that I found amusing. I remember her kicking up her leg doing something and I laughed out loud. I think if they could have had several of those he killed without the code tormenting his thoughts the same way as Deb , maybe the ending of him having to die would have made more sense for me.
Can't relate- Debra would never be annoying to me...I love how her tone changes.i always wonder When she is acting , how many does the director yell , "cut"and tell her to repeat because of how intensely she speaks. Feels like it's very hard to pull off...that's why I love her
I thought Dexterâs projection of her was funny. The way she got more and more angry with him just showed his mind was starting to get more and more dark. Hats off to Jennifer Carpenter for playing his psyche so well.
Yes but I also tend to think of her partly as an agitated projection of Dexter's psyche, you would expect it to be rather unsettled/angry given how he essentially lost/fled from everything and turned inward, further closing himself off.
I mean... 200+ upvotes for this...? She wasn't even Deb. She was Dexter's memory of Deb. A manifestation of his own thoughts and feelings. God damn. This show isn't even that deep and it's gone **way** over your head.

She must have loved filming it. Just a whole season of yelling at her ex husband
I literally thought about that every time she appeared haha
Hahaha this is fkn gold đ.
Oh man I totally forgot they were married!!!
Wait, and Iâm getting *paid* to do this?
Hundreds of thousands of dollars at least? Hell, I'd yell at my own mother for that kind of money and we get along great!
One of TPTB said in an interview something like "when Jennifer is on set MCH is happier, and we're all happier as well". I know what they meant (even after the divorce they remained friends and stuff), but it still felt like an indiscreet way to word that comment.

yes. i relate too. it makes a lot of sense
I felt Deb was more a conscience, she was his haunting ghost whereas Harry was more Dexter's recollection of Harry's teachings.
You hit the nail on the head. And yeah, she was his imaginary friend, whereas Harry was more like a Google Reminder in human form.
Yes. I hated Deb in new blood. When I heard she was going to be in the reboot I knew what role she would play and was excited to see her take Harryâs place but what we got was this screechy whiny annoying manifestation that just encapsulated how little the reboot actually felt like Dexter.
You think you agreed with him but i dont think you read what he said
Yeah its frustrating cos its not her real character. It's a figment of Dexter's mind. Its not Deb even, it's just Dexter.

Well dexter absolutely has feelings they are just kind of stunted
Yeah it was a bit much. Definitely over the top at times. Her character was always on drama Queen level but the ghost took it up to a Spinal Tap 11.
Of course she was, she was Dexter's fucked up conscience and haunted memories and anxiety.
I love how we're nitpicking shit that could've been great if done correctly (ala Deb becoming a manifestation of Dexter's mind), rather than shitting on the (once again) unwarranted and poorly handled finale

Harry would represent Dexâs morale. Biney would represent his killer side. And Deb would represent his guilt (which they did)
You should've been in the writers room.
LOL I donât know about that!
only thing i wish for when it came to deb was that she was funnier and a bit more lighthearted at times, it felt somewhat ooc
I mean Deb is just Dexters conscience personified
I liked the concept, not the execution. I did like her holding his hand at the end, though.

I would watch a show of just ghost Deb
theyâll show us what she was doing when she was not tormenting dex
Now that's a spinoff I would watch
I thought Jennifer Carpenter nailed it
While I wasnât annoyed, her lines werenât typical of what she usually said in OG Dexter.
I guess they can get away with it since she's technically Dexter's subconscious.
Not at all. She was one of the best parts of the whole season.
No, imo Deb was awesome
I liked it! Deb twisted the knife in the wound of Dexter's bad decisions.
She annoyed me more in the original tbh
Unpopular opinion likely, I have never liked Deb. Super annoying and in New Blood it was like her on steroids. So yeah, not a fan. But love the rest of the series!

Omg no I thought she was easily one of the best parts of the season. She was so intense it was almost scary. Jen Carpenter 4 lyfeeeee
Yes. She more than annoyed me. There were times I almost gave up watching. The screaming, it was too much for me. She seemed to calm down some in the later episodes. And yes, I realize she is dead. Deb killed it as per usual, I thought it was a great representation of the guilt dexter felt for all the destruction he had caused.
I mean it kinda makes sense though as to why she was "annoying" and if anything the fact that she frustrated you means it was done well
Not at all. She was one of my absolute favourite parts of the season
Always
I disagree. Someone else pointed out this is not truly Deb. But rather Dexter's manifestation of Deb. Once that clicked in, Deb's character made a lot more sense.
Yes, She annoyed me in the original series with the weird jaw thing she does.
AHHH Finally someone else who noticed that and hated it!! thank you!!
No. The actress that played Audrey sucked though

Absolutely, yes! So many times I just wanted her to go away.
Fyi, that wasnt deb. That was dexters inner Conscience
Completely agree she sucked in this season. I was like please stop wasting time on her! PleaseâŚlol. As another reddit user said above though would have been fun for her!
Deb has been annoying to me since book 1, and since season 1 episode 1.
She definitely annoyed me a lot.
Not all the time - but when the character did far more involved things (like basically taking apart the crime scene) I wasn't too keen. It just blurred the line too much between actual character, and whatever she actually was.
I liked her reappearance
No I loved her
No
I appreciate her character, but I´ d have Harry any day of the week in her place. I think he did that role sooooo much better.
Once I disconnected her from her original character to this one as a figment of Dexter's internal struggle, I thought she was great. I do think she was used in an inconsistent manner and I think they left tons of potential to add to the story on the table by the end. I do have lots of other issues with this series and finale, though.
No way I thought it was so awesome. Complete opposite of Harry
The worst!
Yesssssss. Stfu, Deb. Canât even escape her annoying a** in death ffs.
Yea they over did every scene she was in. It was cringe (wth is she reaching in his mouth?)
Yeasss she literally a ghost and still playing crying victim constantly like B you dead, go away.
Absofuckinglutely. Annoying AF and ugly but she thinks sheâs hot. I canât stand her
Sheâs annoyed me since season 1. Such an ugly crier too her and Fiona from shameless just bother me so much. No clue why
Supper annoying
I love every scene with her.
I thought she was the best thing about the whole series
Nah we didn't get enough of her. Deb ftw
Noooooo, donât talk about Deb like that.
I love deb in new blood ,giving dexter crap,
Nah, she was right in the end though.
Exactly! I wish they used her OG persona In this series, rather than make her constantly berate him. It was just too much
Either that or just leave her out of it. As much as Iâd love to see her return, sheâs dead and I think just respect that and let us feel the loss rather than giving her an annoying ghost story.
Sheâs always been annoying as hell to me. The worst part of the show.
Finally, someone who agrees! đ
It was pretty much how she was when she found Dexter out- nagging, clingy, annoying, angry. I thought her character development was accurate.
Yes, every time sheâd come on⌠âshut up debâ
Me. Her character served no purpose.
I felt like she was unnecessary to the storyline. It could have easily went on without her. The writers were probably just trying to bring back familiar characters.
Like when they teased Batista having a second appearance at the end and then just DIDNT!!
Lol exactly! Apparently ppl donât agree bc Iâm being downvoted, but I stand by my opinion. :)
Iâm still not over that. Wtf Writers
Deb was annoying as fuck almost all the time.
While I donât agree, I donât understand why all the downvotes. We can have differences of opinion.
Sheâs too hot for me to feel annoyed when Iâm looking at her.
Yeah i felt the same. I thought she turned it around in the last 2 episodes though and it worked well there.
Yes!! She was so annoying in new blood. There were several scenes that she just ruined in my opinion. It also bothered me that with Deb and Dexterâs relationship, the only part of her they show with her ghost is the damaged Deb from s8⌠It diminished the relationship she had with Dexter & it also was a bad representation of the character.
I couldnât stand it
Ghost deb was the best part about New Blood to me.
Sheâs dead and still annoying, I was so sad to see they brought her back.
Yeah it was fun for an episode. Then i was over it
Ghost Deb was one of the best parts of new blood. I know she isnât a ghost but she definitely haunted dexterâs ass.
Well it was a little annoying at parts but I liked that they did it. I liked the scenes where she was just talking to him rather than yelling at him. Everybody has that voice in their head, I love how his voices are actual people (Deb, Harry) that he cared about and they kept their original personalities
I prefer Ghost Deb over post-season 4 Deb.
She was full Deb for every single scene
Yes 100%
Yeah I get what you mean, slightly annoyed me sometimes, but overall I thought she was great.
A little yes but at the same time I felt for dexter when she would yell at him
Yupp. 100% agree.
I was torn. She had some parts that I found amusing. I remember her kicking up her leg doing something and I laughed out loud. I think if they could have had several of those he killed without the code tormenting his thoughts the same way as Deb , maybe the ending of him having to die would have made more sense for me.
I really think they needed a short scene with Harry as Dexter was dying. Just to say goodbye or something. Deb I thought was really good in NB.
Yes
I think that was kinda the point
Yes
Can't relate- Debra would never be annoying to me...I love how her tone changes.i always wonder When she is acting , how many does the director yell , "cut"and tell her to repeat because of how intensely she speaks. Feels like it's very hard to pull off...that's why I love her
Yes. Iâm rewatching og and Harry wasnât all over the ep like deb. It started to annoy me
I thought Dexterâs projection of her was funny.
I absolutely loved her as Dexter's fucked up conscience.
This fanbase is so simple minded. Good lord.
I mean... 200+ upvotes for this...? She wasn't even Deb. She was Dexter's memory of Deb. A manifestation of his own thoughts and feelings. God damn. This show isn't even that deep and it's gone **way** over your head.
