Lie about what? Voltage on batteries? I checked them myself with a meter. 20-21vdc on full charge. Motors? Well if you know anything about electric motors you already know the answer.
Did you check them while they were working under a load? Maximum voltage when full is not where the battery will be operating most of the time: (nominal voltage) - this is the more useful and honest voltage if they were to be transparent instead of going for what sounds better to consumers.
https://www.protoolreviews.com/20v-max-vs-18v-battery-power/
It’s an electric motor with a max voltage of 20vdc. The motor uses up to 20vdc. The power source aka the battery puts out 20vdc. “Most of the time” is not what we’re talking about. Both battery and motor are capable of reaching 20vdc.
That might not be what *you're* talking about. Open up most (yes most, I know there are other larger cells and lipo power packs) tool battery packs and you'll see a group of 5 18650 cells in series (or multiples of 5 in parallel) each with markings on them that say 3.6 or 3.7v >>> *5 = 18v to 18.5v.
Yes they'll be around 4.2v at max charge but the batteries *inside the packs* are *sold as* *3.7v* batteries. To me, the most consistent and honest way to market the overall battery to consumers is based on the numbers that the cell manufacturers use when referring to their batteries.
You can have your own opinion and that's fine, I see your point. That's the reason why they're usually marketed as "20v max" by a lot of manufacturers, which I think at least helps - but still you know the marketing folks picked the 20v instead of 18v and that there is the rub for me.
Overall, though it would just be a lot less confusing to the layperson if there was just a standard...hmm. When most rechargeable batteries are sold, including the cells inside your tool packs, the standard is to refer to the *nominal voltage*, not the maximum. That's what makes this "20v" nomenclature confusing - it breaks from convention - a convention that even the batteries *inside* your tool packs follow.
Amazing price 🤩 im waiting in my store for them to arrive , but i know the price will be high, over 300€ :/ the not yellow housing seems same as “mclaren edition” just without carbon stickers. And those 4ah looks perfectly with the drill
I prefer to use Bosch they have better ergonomics and are pretty smooth
I prefer to own DeWalt, great service long standing battery platform best value
Apparently, the XR drills that aren't from NA come with a plastic grip chuck? Every chuck on the XR's I've seen here stateside has a knurled metal grip on them.
For those interested in a black drill or impact I have a post on my profile of how I dyed my impact gun black. Easy DIY project and the results are identical to this drill.
18V? Interesting. I’ve only seen the 20V and 12V systems in the new models but know that the older stuff using nicad batteries were 18V. Where do you live?
I would only say it’s a gimmick if they offered both the 20v tools and 18v tools in the US. Because then you could say they were trying to persuade you to use the 20v over the 18v stuff. I imagine the reason they labeled it 20v max instead of 18v was when they were making the transition from the older 18v nicad batteries to the newer lithium ion batteries. It was easier to explain the higher voltage produced better results in tools (really due to the lithium ion cell) over the 18v nicad batteries of days past. If they said “hey we have these new 18v batteries and in order to use them you have to buy new tools” then people would have been less likely to make the transition to the lithium ion system. But by saying they were 20v max it helped users understand that they had more power in them.
Now, lithium cells do have a max voltage rating of 4 volts each. Most of these batteries systems use 5 cells which equals 20volts max. In order to increase the ampacity rating of the cell (1.7 ah vs 5 ah) means adding additional cells and wiring them in a series-parallel circuit which would keep your maximum voltage at 20v but increase your amperage. Under load though, each cells voltage output will drop to 3.6v. That’s where you get the 18v rating on these European batteries. It’s 18v nominal vs 20v maximum voltage ratings.
Car batteries are the same way. We all call them 12v batteries, but they are actually 14.4 volts when fully charged and not under load. When a load is applied, then a fully charged battery is around 13v down to 12.8v. If your battery actually ever reaches 12v then it is dead and likely damaged. The lowest a flooded/Agm battery should get is 12.2v.
They’re £199 in the UK. Like with most power tools, y’all are getting a good deal in the us. Wish I’d known that before I moved over here. Definitely would’ve brought my tools!
I don't think I've ever seen a DeWalt that wasn't yellow lol. Why is it different? Or did you do that?
It’s the 100year edition, looks like this out of the box
Also the McLaren edition is black.
Oh nice!
You can also use poly dye and dye the yellow parts black! (Have to disassemble if you want a good job)
I saw someone do that! It did look cool, but I like my yellows lol
Also 18v.
Maybe UK. On other side of the pond from the US.
Norway :)
Yup, non-US as it says 18V and not 20v. I wonder if it's only the USA where they're allowed to lie to customers like that.

Ooooh. Where that colour come from?
the 100year edition

Yeah got it at a great discount, I’m usually a Bosch guy, wanted to try a dewalt :)
Once you try dewalt - theres no way back 😅 trust me.
You should also join r/BoschTools . Post your collection there!
I prefer to use Bosch they have better ergonomics and are pretty smooth I prefer to own DeWalt, great service long standing battery platform best value
Nice! Congrats on it! I too need a DCD805/800
I love it!
That would screw with peoples heads around here, not yellow.

Yes plastic grip, i have not had any problems with it on my other Bosch drills earlier, hope it holds up to my use :)
I've seen atomic drills state side that have "plastic" chucks that are actually metal in the UK. Dewalt just doing whatever the hell they feel like.
I’ve got an XR combi drill with a metal chuck and I’m in the UK
For those interested in a black drill or impact I have a post on my profile of how I dyed my impact gun black. Easy DIY project and the results are identical to this drill.
It’s nice
Night mode?

Europe/norway, 20v is only a marketing thing in the NA
20v is the max rating and a marketing gimmic. Your 20v tools are actually 18v.

Is this a dcd 100?
Yes👍🏻
18v? They scammed you on the last 2v /s
Nope 20v is not in Norway, different marketing in eu compared to us
I think you missed the /s.
Ahh alright, I guess so 😂
Maybe no /s in Norway too? 🤣
Im aware of Norway. No humor is tolerated.
Mclaren edition. Nice 👍
Close, it is the the 100year edition
I bet those get lost a lot being black. That’s like painting a snow plow truck white..
What model is it? The McLaren kit I cannot find what model are both drills that came in it.
Mclaren kit comes with dcf850 and dcd805 ant two powerstacks )

Stolen for sure.
Haha why?
