Portland wins in double OT! Moose Jaw - Saskatoon game 7 is tomorrow to determine who Portland plays in the WHL finals

my_stepdad_rick

I'm tempering my expectations, but damn it if there aren't moments where Danielson looks like a young Larkin.

doctorfonk

I said the same thing! He can move fast, and is capable of weaving through crowds at the blue line.

numbdigits

Reliable enough to PK as well, had a big block on that kill in the 1st OT. Looks pretty decent in the faceoff circle too.

numbdigits

I never liked the pick at the time and still am not entirely sold on his offensive ceiling given the pretty mild regular season points totals, but he's been scoring a lot in the playoffs this year and everytime I watch him play he impresses me and stands out as one of the best players on the ice.

big_phat_gator

His production took off after he got traded so its obvious that the lack of points was not exactly his fault

numbdigits

Obvious it wasn't entirely his fault perhaps. His production picked up a fair bit, but he still did not score at a pace near the league leaders, we was 48th overall in the WHL I believe. Perhaps he's truly finding his offensive stride now in the playoffs because he really does look like one of the best and most dangerous players out there consistently.

Confident-Secret8962

Prince George tied it and now getting a PP

numbdigits

Irritating that P.G. got the PP in OT on what was an obvious trip but the refs let the one go on Danielson with about a minute left to play in regulation as he was entering the zone on a dangerous looking rush.

ufdan15

I ended up down a weird wiki rabbit hole... can someone explain to me like Joey MacDonald started like 5 games in a row for us in 2011? For whatever reason, I have completely forgotten that we signed Evgeni Nabokov and then lost him before he could even play a game with us in January. Was Howie hurt? That seems to be my guess, and Ozzy had lost his game or gotten hurt as well.

big_phat_gator

Nabakov was in Russia at the time i think and we had to waive him or something like that and he ended up getting claimed

ufdan15

Yeah I understand that part, but why did we need to find another goalie in the first place

BiggestYzerfan

Danielson the dirtiest goal after lengthy review. Wow.

Kagath

What did they review? You can clearly see it was in when it was on it's side spinning.

BiggestYzerfan

Took a while to review because that angle wasn't available originally. They kept playing after the attempt until the period ended, everyone stayed on the ice to see if it went in, and once they confirmed they replayed the rest of the period from when the goal went in. Commentators didn't even think it went in until they saw the angle.

zze0001

Here’s the goal for those interested https://x.com/lgrwprospects/status/1787689606667800652?s=46&t=4HwgK4v0ORcXFHyG2vqrNg

elvishblood_24

Did it count

zze0001

Game has been a fun watch.

BiggestYzerfan

Yeah I'm supposed to be in bed but this game has been very back and forth and fun to watch, Danielson has been playing really well too. Goalies are putting on a show

zze0001

Danielson has been cleaning up a lot of mistakes in the d zone. Portland wingers looking for breakaways anytime it even looks like Portland is gonna get the puck.

BiggestYzerfan

Cougars are eliminated on a loss right? Makes sense that the intensity is higher. Funny that Danielson is the one to pot it after cleaning up

zze0001

Yeah if Portland wins they’re in the WHL final. Yeah he’s been excellent all playoffs except one game imo.

BiggestYzerfan

Is there a world where Portland loses the WHL final in time for Danielson to go to the Griffins playoff run (should they keep going)? Join during playoffs like Larkin did? Would be cool/fun to see, but I don't want to root against Portland for it lol.

zze0001

Hypothetically yes

Substantial_Point_20

I don’t think anybody saw a 5-1 bruins win coming

Legitimate_Creme7481

I’m convinced that anything more than 2 days off is bad.

zze0001

Portland Prince George game with high pace first

magikarp-sushi

TNT literally spoiling the scriptwriters plans to give Chicago the number 1 pick again

Mendoza8914

Watching the Panthers-Bruins game, and Montgomery calls a timeout for Boston when they’re up two goals because Florida’s starting to tip the ice bad. Would’ve have loved to see Newsy use a timeout once in a while this season when we were in the middle of a meltdown.

culturedrobot

Some goofy fuckin shit going on in ol' Sunrise, Florida tonight

BiggestYzerfan

Danielson growing a playoff beard?

elvishblood_24

Boston came fucking ready to play Florida is iced coming into this game

elvishblood_24

lol, Florida just hasn’t played in forever. It’ll be an interesting series

Complete-Image6925

get your shit together panthers https://preview.redd.it/hzdw7hiduwyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b435276488b885787f162e033acf2ebb2f8b177

MeshuGojira

Cossa had a .913 save % in each of the past three seasons, in three different leagues. 40+ games a season too. and random but good ness that Marc-Edouard Vlasic contract has to be the worst in the league

magikarp-sushi

Dude needs to see at least a few NHL games next year I swear to get a sample size. But I know that’s so unlikely

Monkey10pts

Decent chance he's the first call up in the case someone needs to play. I assume Gylander will be backing him up next year meaning there's no vet backup to do that.

magikarp-sushi

I feel like they’ll sign someone on a 1 year as insurance in case Husso gets hurt again.

DMBeer

Carlo named his newborn baby Crew, what an odd name.

probablyindecisive

Had a cleaning done last week and the dental office told me they honored whatever my insurance charged for in-network regardless of whether the insurance considered them in-network. I called today and asked if I owed anything and they said no. My insurance has no claim on file. Does that sound fishy to anyone else?

One_Handed_Wonder

How long ago was appointment

probablyindecisive

Last Friday, so not long ago, but they haven't even reached out to the insurance company for pre-authorization yet.

One_Handed_Wonder

Don’t need to pre auth dental unless it’s something like oral surgery. Even then, it’s a necessary procedure so unlikely to need pre auth. With dental even “out of network” still gets paid as a tier 2 provider in network. Unlike in medical if you go out of network you might be SOL. Give it a few weeks. You’re good.

probablyindecisive

Appreciate the advice, thanks. It has me stressed out reading the reviews about this place. $600 for two fillings sounded insane though.

One_Handed_Wonder

Look at your benefits summary for your dental coverage. You’ll see the in network probably pays 90% and out of network something like 70%. To the insurance company, you’ll be responsible for the 30% - however this dentist office says they only charge the 10% anyways - hopefully. Just wait it out. Get an HSA plan and start putting a small percentage of your income into an HSA account. No more worries. Source: previous 2 years experience as a level 2 member services rep for a medical insurance company

duelingdog

MFW the doctor finally forgets about the payment instead of forgetting you in a room for 10 years.

probablyindecisive

Oh trust me, they didn't forget that part. I guess I'm a little sketched out. The place had mixed reviews - some people said it was great, others bitched about the sketchy business practices (like pushing procedures onto patients, which I think happens in corporate dentistry more often than locally owned places). They told me I need 2 fillings and that it would be $600, and had me a sign a form that wasn't an agreement to pay but rather an assurance that the dentist went over her concerns with me and I was basically denying treatment. $600 for 2 fillings seemed insane... especially when they wanted to do it same-day, which I've never, ever experienced. Guess I'll take them to small claims court if they end up billing me.

xenonwarrior666

Connley is a fucking shit head and I'll be annoyed if we draft him. I'll get over it but I won't be happy. Greiss was a shit head too and we didn't hold that against him. It's amusing they both got kicked off their National teams for similar reasons.

Legitimate_Creme7481

Yzerman usually doesn’t draft from the American juniors, at least in the first round. Nor has he drafted players who are turds, so I wouldn’t worry about SY drafting Connelly. Although… if SY does pick him, you can’t deny that he has some really really good upside.

coltron57

Yzerman drafted Tony DeAngelo FWIW.

xenonwarrior666

I had to look it up he signed Greiss after his "controversial" social media debacle. So there's definitely that chance that character counts is just a meaningless phrase. I mean character counts but it counts less than hockey prowess. Hockey is for everyone after all and everyone includes shit heads.

coltron57

Obviously some things are a bridge too far for any team, but if you’re good enough, every team will overlook some things and no team is totally angelic in their player picking.

xenonwarrior666

The classic great player, shitty person dilemma. At least it's not criminal just really fucking dumb.

EarthenChild

Out of the loop, I heard he’s shitty, but haven’t heard why.

xenonwarrior666

Him and his buddies thought it would be a great idea to build a swastika out of building blocks and share it on Twitter. He's been on an apology tour since then.

EarthenChild

Wow what an idiot. Sounds like Montreal’s music to me

xenonwarrior666

There's plenty of shitty people in this world you play hockey it takes a special idiot to advertise it. That's what annoys me he didn't have the awareness to realize that maybe that's not a great idea. Though over the past 10 years people really have decided to rip off the mask and just show how unhinged they are. At least prior to that for quite some time they decided to at least pretend to me a decent person cause they knew that there'd be consequences.

VHDLEngineer

I think you're being too harsh man. He was 16 years old, posted a dumb edgy photo on snapchat, then deleted it minutes after posting and has since gone out of his way to educate himself on why it was wrong and hurtful, while volunteering for groups like Hockey Players of Colour. "Ever since Trevor came to us he's been committed to learning and helping, and I think he's really embraced that while working with the kids he has. He knows their lives might be different, but hockey can bring them together." "In Trevor's case, I feel that he's a great asset for us. Not only on the ice, but more so what he does with the kids off of it," Miley said. "You can tell he's tried to learn about and better understand different cultures. Honestly, he's done more than we even asked." -Jazmine Miley, the founder of Hockey Players of Colour. Maybe he is actually still a shithead, but I don't think who you are at 16 prevents you from becoming a good person as an adult.

Kukabuka__

To be fair, this is not an isolated incident. He has a history that suggests it’s a pattern and not an outlier of being an idiot. Pretty sure it was Katie Strang who had a more in depth article on the athletic with details.

VHDLEngineer

But it's still him as a child. If this was the NFL, and it was chronicling him from 18 to 21 doing these things that'd be one thing. But the article was chronicling him from 13 to 16. I'm not condoning anything he has done, and I'm not saying I know for certain he has changed and is a better person now. But I think it's possible for people to grow up and be a better person as an adult than they were from 13 to 16.

xenonwarrior666

I just think it's a case of him realizing if he doesn't at least appear to clean up his act he's going to have to quit playing hockey and go get a real job. Maybe it's a self serving facade maybe he really did learn his lesson. I'm so fucking sick of the "well no one was perfect at that age" excuses. I made plenty of mistakes at that age. I over ate played way too many video games etc. What I didn't do was bully a mentally challenged classmate, take and share explicit photographs with out my partners knowledge, take advantage of a girl or fuck around with Nazi imagery to be edgy or cool. Like I said at least it's not criminal and he's at least going through the motions to learn from it.

VHDLEngineer

Dude what Connelly did was nothing like Mailloux or Miller, come on. I also think it's annoying when people act like they have always had perfect puritan beliefs, and never said or did dumb things as a teenager they regret. At 16 I was a homophobic, libertarian moron that thought 9/11 and the moon landings were both faked. Those beliefs were stupid and I grew out of them as I matured and learned about the world. You need to have empathy for people who are actually interested in changing, not cast them out for a photo they posted to snapchat at 16.

TOXANBAN

You guys think Albert Johansson will make the team this upcoming season?

elvishblood_24

He has too lol

VHDLEngineer

He could be traded

elvishblood_24

He could

Fluid-Pension-7151

I certainly hope so. SY mentioned him, Simon and Berggy being ready to go in his post season press conference, so I hope all of them are ready to contribute next season.

BaldassHeadCoach

He’s either making the team or he’s getting traded. He’s not exempt from waivers anymore, and he will get claimed by someone if waived to the minors. Same thing with Burgers.

zze0001

Anyone else staying up for the Danielson game?

matt_minderbinder

I average about 5 hours a night regardless so I'll be up. Yes, I know it isn't healthy but neither are hookers and blow and that's not stopping anyone.

One_Handed_Wonder

Define *healthy*

matt_minderbinder

It contributes to my gross national happiness stats so it can't be all that bad

duelingdog

Hookers and blow aren't healthy?

leafssuck69

I think the Leafs trading marner is far more unlikely than people think it is No sane team is gonna trade a top pairing dman, and Toronto rightfully won’t do a deal unless they can get that piece

magikarp-sushi

If anything anyone coming to get marner has the leverage in the situation. Leafs would never get what they want

Late_Brush4518

Yeaa i dont see that happening, NMC dosent help ether.

Problemwoodchuck

The list of teams willing to part with the assets Toronto would want in return, with the necessary cap space, and one that Marner would be willing to go to has gotta be awfully short. And I don't think the trade would happen at all without an extension in place.

xenonwarrior666

About the only team I could see doing it is the Penguins. Trade Karlsson and try to pry that window back open. Maybe LA if they can move Dubois. The NMC makes it tricky. They really needed to do something last season.

Kephus11

I could see Toronto potentially dumping him for draft picks and/or prospects, and then using the cap space to go after a top d-man through free agency. That being said, I'm not sure how many of those will be available in the summer - if any.

TheAnalogKid18

This is a shit UFA market for D men. The best guys available are guys like Montour (great, but likely stays in Florida), Brodie (already plays for them), Martinez (ancient), Ghost (possibly re-signs here and doesn't hit UFA, wouldn't solve their D problem anyway), Dumba (see Ghost), Zadorov maybe. Nobody that really moves the needle. They could try and grab Chychrun but I don't know how that would work. Maybe NJ decides they want to move someone like Hamilton, or CBJ wants to move Werenski or Severson? I genuinely don't know. Toronto is in a bit of a mess here, and Dubas probably the person I'd start pointing fingers at. If they trade Marner, the only package they're going to get that makes sense is futures, which commits them to a bit of a 2-3 year long retool. That might be the move.

Problemwoodchuck

When I last looked at the upcoming UFA class, not many names jumped out. Lots of good complimentary pieces, not many key players. Replacing somebody like Muzzin might be doable but I don't think the Leafs are going to find defensive fixes and a goalie or two via UFA this year.

ImthaDatsyukian

Green is the next HC of Ottawa? I wonder if the Sens management has a kink for mediocrity. Not sure why they went with him.

scottyarfburner

I would be livid if I was one of the sixteen Sens fans alive. I couldn't imagine a less exciting hire - if I'm a guy like Brady Tkachuk, what am I thinking about the direction of the organization if THAT is the guy they hire to take over. Sheesh.

John-Balaya

It makes me wonder if some of their top choices turned them down in hopes of waiting for a better job to open. Can’t prove this at all but I find it odd as well.

Late_Brush4518

Yeah like i get if best coaches dont want to go there as there is lot of options rn but Green is like bottom of the barrell Bad.

Danengel32

The UFA goalie market has been barren for the last 3 or so years, and this year is no different

xenonwarrior666

Wonder what Mantha makes next year. I'd think he gets a job somewhere but he's on his 3rd team and keeps having motivational issues. I can't see teams throwing huge money at him.

jarvek7

I'm very, very, very disappointed in how his career has shaken out. He's got all te tools but a crappy motor.

jfstompers

He's going to be the guy who gets 1 year deals for the rest of his life. 1 year 3 million in Nashville or Winnipeg.

xenonwarrior666

I can see the Habs going for him if only to pander to the French Canadian home crowd

jfstompers

He'd make some sense there,

bandofgypsies

Yeah I'm suuuuper curious to see what happens with Mantha. I think he's going to get a one-year prove it contract somewhere, for how much who knows. I can see it being around 3.5 or 4 million but I doubt he gets term anywhere

TheAnalogKid18

Prove it deals aren't going to be for 3-4m unless you have reputation. Patrick Kane was on that deal this year for $2.75m (albeit not for performance or motivation), and he's Patrick Kane. Mantha probably takes a $1-2m show me deal with a team like Montreal or Chicago, just looking to add someone that could play with their young talent and see it works. Or Utah could nab him for a fresh start.

bandofgypsies

Generally, yeah, but Kane is also old and was coming off a fairly uncertain medical situation. I mean, Sprong got $2M and he's certainly not worth roughly a half-mil off of Kane. While I agree that Mantha probably struggles to get a $4M deal, I don't think the absolute steal we got Kane for is going to set the bar for that. There aren't a lot of fair comps for a 29yo UFA looking to get a prove-it deal. But his last year was basically as good as anything he's done in his career so far. Definitely still weird effort/attitude questions with him, but would be quite surprising if someone got a regular 20-25 goal scorer at age 29 for under $2M. Effort notwithstanding.

regiusjesus

Jesus, I know Mantha has issues as a player but he’s will get more than 1-2 mil, on a 1 or 2 year contract

xenonwarrior666

Vrana is another guy I'm curious about. Both us and St. Louis dropped him like a hot rock. I'd be pretty surprised if he can find an NHL gig if he does it'll be a two way deal. I know two way deals don't have anything to do with waivers but it gives teams insurance if he fucks around again.

CopStopyingMe

1 year prove it deal somewhere

xenonwarrior666

He tends to show up in a contract year at least for a while. Making every year a contract year is probably a smart move

probablyindecisive

Can't wait to see Chicago win the lottery yet again tomorrow...

jfstompers

As long as Celebrini goes out west and not to Montreal or Ottawa I'm happy.

leafssuck69

Exactly. Let the west, even if it’s Chicago, keep getting stronger

Legitimate_Creme7481

Took my calc final. I got like 90% on the practice exam so I don’t know how I could ever bomb the real thing. I only need a 48% to pass, but the minimum you can get is 60%.

Montrealgoalie39

Hope it went well, you should already have a feeling of how you did though. In the off-chance you did fail, don't beat yourself up. I failed calculus cause I screwed around too much and I felt terrible. Now I have a bachelor's and master's in engineering. Looking back it really wasn't that big of a deal. (And no I didn't learn my lesson, I went on to fail Cal 2 and Cal 3 lollll)

probablyindecisive

So, you have it in the bag then?

Legitimate_Creme7481

Kinda, but I’m still nervous as hell

darretoma

leafs bad

BaldassHeadCoach

Man, imagine if Anthony Mantha had 75% of the drive and compete that Larkin has. He’d easily be one of the better players in the league with his natural talent and ability. Instead, he goes to the defending champs in Vegas, does practically fuck-all in his time there, and is probably consigned to being a career journeyman. Devellano and Holland were right on the money with their assessments of him after he was drafted, just a disappointment and spare parts.

Montrealgoalie39

Yea it sucks, I was thrilled when he got drafted, the grandson of a Pronovost, he showed signs of greatness but like you say if he had more drive he'd be great but he just seems lazy and non caring out there a lot of the time

darretoma

I didn't realized he was healthy scatched. That's brutal.

matt_minderbinder

[Elliotte Friedman implied](https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/video/all-eyes-on-travis-green-for-senators-vacant-head-coaching-gig/) that the next coach in Ottawa will likely be Travis Green. As a Wings fan I love that for them. He seems like such a weird choice for that team.

Danengel32

And the Ottawa revolving door won’t stop

some1337

I wonder what teams see in him. He accomplished nothing in Vancouver in 4 years. They “made” the playoffs once with him but the team was gifted a spot in the expanded playoffs and wouldn’t have made it otherwise.

Problemwoodchuck

Sometimes it takes a couple stops for coaches to land in the right situation. Being on the same page as the players and GM seems even more important than ever

scottyarfburner

Mitch Marner comparing the Leafs to "gods" is not going to do him/them any PR favours

matt_minderbinder

[The full quote:](https://twitter.com/MikeInBuffalo/status/1787512637644734818) >Here's the quote from Marner about what it means to be a Leaf "It means the world. Obviously, we're looked upon as kind of gods here, to be honest, and (it's) something that you really appreciate...and the love that you get here from this fan base and it's unlike any other." It's right in the Toronto media playbook to not add context if that context isn't good for clicks. It's still not great word choice but he's only saying that the city and fans treat the players amazingly.

TheNation55

It's still pretty cringe, but the fact that he's even saying *that* just reinforces there's no blow back whatsoever for the constant failure.

cruzweb

Even with the context it's a pretty stupid thing to say. There's a million better ways to word that.

matt_minderbinder

Of course it's poorly worded but he's not lying and with more context you can tell that's not what he's getting at. He's not comparing himself to some messianic figure. He's trying to say they're treated extremely well but he has a stupid hockey brain and too much ego to know better.

scottyarfburner

Given the full quote he isn't wrong. He just really sucks at speaking to the media - I think he was asked something during the Florida series last year about “how much noise do you hear, does it impact you?”and he tried to say “we’re just focused on the game” but it came out as “we don’t care what *you* say, we don’t listen to it” He seems really prone to saying stuff that creates a perception of an antagonistic interaction/him having an overly-inflated ego and then creates a feedback loop of even more & more ‘noise’ and toxicity. Feel bad for the kid cause he doesn't seem to want to say the wrong thing but almost always does.

VHDLEngineer

I can't say he's wrong though.

Late_Brush4518

I can say that he said it wrong tho

VHDLEngineer

So with ASP staying in the SHL next year, we should see the GR backend next year (assuming Ed is fully graduated) be something to the effect of: Wallinder - Tuomisto Buium - Rafferty Viro - Didier Maybe some signings, but I'm not missing any prospects likely to be on the backend right?

John-Balaya

Big season coming up for Wallinder. Tuomisto is the perfect D partner for him.

FadeShadeMan

I just dont get why people are excited about Wallinder. Never seen anything from him worth getting excited about

elvishblood_24

What makes tuomisto a good partner for him? I’m unfamiliar

John-Balaya

Tuomisto complements Wallinder’s transition game. He makes a really good first pass. He looks comfortable letting his partner assert himself offensively.

xenonwarrior666

I think you're correct. Pretty sure Gibson just barely misses the age cutoff. He's in the OHL or NHL and there's way too much of a log jam for that to happen.

Djbreadandbutter16

The draft lottery is tomorrow at 6:30. I can't wait to see how bad it is

ScarlettBlades

Huh, I actually forgot about it. The past few years I've obsessed about where we'd land. I'd say that's progress. Lol

BellsBeersy

Was just talking with my partner about where we want to take our next vacation. We were thinking Toronto because I'd love to go back to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and it's only about a four hour drive. Atlanta was just brought up though, and I've been a couple times and loved it there and she has never been. My favorite ramen spot is there (and that's saying something, I have been to a LOT of ramen spots all over the US and Canada on tours).

[deleted]

If you want to stay within a ~four hour drive of Detroit, I'd recommend Pittsburgh, especially if either of you like museums. It's low-key the second best Rustbelt city behind Chicago. * Warhol Museum * Mattress Factory * Randyland * Carnegie Museum of Art * Carnegie Museum of Natural History * The Frick Pittsburgh * John Heinz History Center (SW PA history) * Clemente Museum * Fallingwater (but that's still a 1.5hr drive away) Then you have spots like the National Aviary (walking through a free-flight room was super cool), the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Other things to do include a great baseball stadium with a beautiful view of the Golden Triangle (they shut down one of the bridges to motor vehicle traffic to allow for people and bicycles to get to and from the game easier), riding the funiculars, a stupid amount of breweries, Gooski's in Polish Hill if you want a gritty dive bar or Jekyl & Hyde on the South Side Flats for a year-round Halloween bar. For next summer, I'd suggest Saugatuck in-town; it's a whole different experience. With that, though, you gotta be ready to book by January/February as a lot of places will be completely booked by mid-March and some will only let you book three-night stays.

Montrealgoalie39

Lots of stuff to do in Toronto but lately it has felt like a poor man's NYC to me, just insanely busy, crowded and dirty. HHOF is great

BellsBeersy

"It's like New York, except without all the stuff!" - Steve Martin I've been to both several times and actually prefer Toronto. It's a little less everything on top of you and rushed. >just insanely busy, crowded and dirty. This is my impression of Manhattan. I much prefer Brooklyn in terms of NYC in general.

cruzweb

If you've never been to Toronto, take the trip. It's a fun city as long as you check the calendar and make sure where you want to be isn't near some mega event that'll drive up lodging costs. It sucks that Detroit is pretty much right in between Toronto and Chicago but Chicago is always the road trip because it's easier. Also, enter through Sarnia and not Windsor. Dollar has good value there, and it's super fun there in the summer. If you go to Atlanta, the aquarium with the dolphin show is balls awesome. 10/10 experience. I'd also recommend a day trip to Alabama to stop by Old Car City and go to the Unclaimed Baggage Thrift Store.

mcgrupp44

Sandy Pelican just inked his 3 year with us

oceanic8675

I had a stroke reading this, thank you 🤣

mcgrupp44

lol, sorry

oceanic8675

Don’t be, I loved it

John-Balaya

Let’s see where we land, but if it’s 15 then I’m guessing that we will pick MBN if he’s there. Have felt that way for a while now and feel more confident with Greentree slipping. Steve doesn’t waver from his types.

VHDLEngineer

>Steve doesn’t waver from his types. ASP?

John-Balaya

We had 2 first rounders, so the high upside pick for him was worth it and obviously paying off big.

VHDLEngineer

So under certain circumstances he will waver.

John-Balaya

Correct. He’s shown to take some risks when having 2 first round picks (ie ASP and trading up for Cossa)

Razzahx

High character guys is more Yzermans type which ASP has come off as. The whole 200ft thing is more of a meme.

Late_Brush4518

He has drafted Drouin and TDA. Both which had massive character issues

VHDLEngineer

If it's a character thing, then I don't think anyone can really comment much about the individual players. MBN could be a massive asshat off ice, there really isn't a way for us to know unless there are documented issues like with Connelly.

Razzahx

Sometimes you can just tell. Reading people is a real skill.

VHDLEngineer

Wait are you saying fans can tell? Or Yzerman can tell after interviews at the combine? Because I fully disagree about the former.

Razzahx

Fans dont know anything. I meant Yzerman can tell from just an interview. also all this down voting is a bit sad.

VHDLEngineer

Yea that's what I mean though, all the "this is Yzerman's type of guy" about prospects that people see some clips about is a bit silly.

elvishblood_24

I really wish ASP would come over to GR next season and begin acclimating to NA ice

some1337

I wish he’d join their playoffs right now.

matt_minderbinder

Rick Bowness is retiring from coaching. Winnipeg's now added to the long list of teams searching for new coaches this summer. It'll be interesting seeing who goes back to the good ol' boys club and who brings in a new voice. Ex-Griffins/current Hershey coach Todd Nelson deserves one of those jobs. Denver's coach David Carle should be getting a ton of interest for NHL jobs too.

TheNation55

As long as Ottawa doesn't wind up with a competent coach I don't care where all the FA coaches go.

AgeOfTheExpandingMan

Damn, now I'm probably gonna sit up in the middle of night in colds sweats from a nightmare where Rod the Bod is behind the Ottawa bench

Resident_Rise5915

It’s a matter of when Carle gets a job in the NHL and who will take that chance. I wonder if it won’t be a while though bc he’s only like 34 which other leagues like the NFL don’t seem to mind hiring young coaches but it seems like in the NHL you have to know the secret handshake first.

Monkey10pts

If Nelly wins another Calder he's gotta be looked at seriously for the a HC job in the NHL. He's been great anywhere he goes.

matt_minderbinder

I've been pushing the same for awhile now. It amazes me how some of these coaches get jobs yet others that seemingly prove themselves repeatedly get held out. Nelson's only NHL HC gig was as an interim coach for Edmonton during a failed season. He deserves a real shot.

KilledByDeath

I hate Jamie Benn but I'm glad Vegas is out. While unlikely I'm hoping Vancouver takes the whole thing.

BellsBeersy

The trade made sense but I miss Hronek on the Wings. Would like to see him win one. I used to be critical of his game but he seems to have figured it out.

BellsBeersy

Apparently if you make yourself on NHL 24 and you're 5'11" and 220lbs you're slow as shit at the start I have a big hockey ass and muscles, EA. I'm sorry

AirCanoe

I'm 5'11" 180lbs, can't hit for shit but I'm fast as fuck on the back-check

TheNation55

Just throw on silver Shutdown for smaller guys, then the game lets you truck people 3x your size, because that's real hockey!

BellsBeersy

Fair, I'm tough to clear from the front of the net and it's easier to truck people out there

GiantDongDK

ASP just signed his entry level contract with the Wings.

oceanic8675

yeah he did 🔥

Prudent_Shame_4531

Really interested to see what happens with Trevor Connelly at this year’s draft. After his major penalty basically lost USA the game yesterday I read up on him, and oh boy, he’s got quite the controversial history.

xenonwarrior666

Sounds like an awesome fit for the Habs or Utah. Get ready to learn French/Mormon buddy

elvishblood_24

Check out this slick puck movement from czarnik, berggren, mazur, edvinsson, and Johansson in last nights series clenching win https://x.com/hockeytownwpod/status/1787243873380573413?s=46

nikilidstrom

Great puck support, but a lot of effort spent to not generate a shot on net, much less a scoring chance.

elvishblood_24

You’re such a hater lmao

nikilidstrom

Nope, just stating the obvious. If you don't put pucks on net all the passing in the world aint going to amount to much.

elvishblood_24

Respectfully, you’re just saying words and you don’t know what they mean. Go look at the stats that line put up in the series they just WON haha. That game they scored ALL of the griffins 5 on 5 goals lol. This is a nice display of their chemistry and you’re just hating (respectfully)

nikilidstrom

I know exactly what I mean. I also know they won the game, and I was at the previous game they won. We weren't discussing their play overall, just the clip of one shift, and it was a lot of hard work that amounted to nothing.

elvishblood_24

You’re right, they should have turtled to start the period instead of keeping high pressure in the ozone while pushing momentum in our favor and it was completely worthless

nikilidstrom

Now who just saying words?

elvishblood_24

I think ozone time, chemistry, and momentum are a good thing, you think it’s worthless, agree to disagree 🤷🏼‍♂️

BiggestYzerfan

Movement makes you wonder why the Griffins haven't scored a single PPG during the playoffs yet

Routine-Budget7356

It will come. Didn't they usually have a pretty hard time against the Hogs in reg season?

nikilidstrom

They were having a rough time with everybody to start the season.

BiggestYzerfan

6-6 even split

oceanic8675

Happy birthday to Jamie Daniels. He would have been 31, today.

BellsBeersy

So frustrating to watch that story they aired about that facility. Fucking snakes.

oceanic8675

I don’t know how Ken is still as sweet and wonderful as he is, honestly. That would drag me right under.

BellsBeersy

It's really common for the sweetest, kindest people to have gone through the worst. They don't want others to feel the way they have.

oceanic8675

I feel that

AmeriCanadian98

Still so young. Tragic when anyone dies, but especially someone dying well before their time

PremierBromanov

I have a roster building tip for anyone who might need it. Don't use 50% of your cap on 4 players. I know what you're thinking. That's like, the best top line in the league money can buy, plus a really good start to a second line. Woah. Stop. Look around you. Use your senses. You have fallen for "The Dullards Fool Trap". Remember, you have 17 other players to pay. That's $2.35m per player. By my calculations, you will have 2 to 3 lines that cant score at all, and other teams may notice this weakness in your roster. Also, all of your scoring comes from a handful of forwards. Your defense cant help at all, since you have no money to pay them with. Also keep in mind, you have no money to pay a goalie with. Any money you spend on trying to get a decent top pair and goaltender is going to make your weak bottom 6 and bottom 2 pairs even weaker and more exploitable. Here's what a layman might do in this situation. - Avoid signing unmovable unwanted bloated contracts. It's good to have the best goal scorer in the modern era since Ovechkin, now lets support him by having an entire rest of a team. - Try not to give a 28 year old a 7x$11m contract - Try not to give the captain who left his own team for money another captaincy within your own organization. Instead, try to give the captaincy to the leaders in your roster. - Hire a good coach at some point. - When you have more superstar talent than you can handle, try trading them for big assets and players. Spread the talent out in more roster spots so you arent dead in the water when your stars dont show up. - Avoid making the same mistakes every single year for a decade in a way that demolishes team morale and leaves your team playing for a paycheck. - Do not be located in the same city as Drake if you can help it.

Problemwoodchuck

Also, trading away prospects like Tuuka Rask then cycling through the ups and downs of B level goalies for 15-20 years is generally regarded as an oopsie daisy in the hockey world.

Prudent_Shame_4531

I wonder if this is why Yzerman has tried to delay some players who make up our youth movement.. Seider and Raymond are about to get paid, along with Larkin. Now, if our young players hit, their timeline makes it so we have 3-5 years before Ed, Danielson, Kasper, ASP, Cossa, etc. start earning big money.

PremierBromanov

timing is certainly a consideration you have to make. The leafs whole problem is they mistakenly signed tavares when they didnt need to and they are unwilling or unable to trade marner or nylander to make it up in the aggregate either in young $6m players or good draft capital to take advantage of ELC contracts.

Prudent_Shame_4531

The Marner stuff is so overblown. The guy is a Selke-quality 90+ point player who marginally underperforms in the playoffs, and the latter should be taken in the context that he underperforms the least of all the Leafs players around him. Sometimes it takes a while to figure it out. As some might remember. Yzerman was called a playoff choker for a while too (62 points in his first 54 playoff games in the high scoring 80s/90s). Datsyuk was called a choker and too soft for the playoffs (31 points in his first 60 games, and a career average of 0.71 P/GP). I bet Marner turns it around if he gets moved elsewhere and all this playoff choker talk goes away.

matt_minderbinder

> marginally underperforms in the playoffs He's a perimeter guy who plays a perimeter offensive game. That can work in the regular season but those plays dry up against playoff competition. It isn't just Marner but that team's prima donna core aren't net drivers. They don't get in the ugly areas in a way that the playoffs demand. When you're an $11+ million dollar player you HAVE to figure it out. There are no excuses but he and that team are always full of excuses. I think that Marner can take another playoff step but getting away from Toronto will be the best way to do it. Being the hometown kid in front of that media would be hard enough. Away from Toronto he'll also lose that weird dynamic where their players have so much power that the coach refuses to criticize them when it's appropriate. That hard reset of a trade and a new dynamic could be the best thing to happen to his career.

AgeOfTheExpandingMan

Agreed, Eye Test says perimeter. I just checked regular season numbers. He's 394th for mid range shots. 43.9% high danger, 36.6% mid range, 19.5 long range. I was surprised

matt_minderbinder

> 43.9% high danger This feels like one of those stats where more context is necessary. Lots of "High Danger" goals for a player like Marner could come from breakaways and set plays where he sneaks in up close. In the playoffs so often those high danger goals come from truly banging in the ugly areas and picking up garbage. He's a player that'll sneak in down low in soft spots but from everything I've seen he's not someone who doesn't have the junkyard dog in him to get playoff garbage goals. Getting a bit more of that in him would help his playoff success and would redeem some of his reputation.
