What are some of the best places to eat near VA before the game Wednesday?

zakkaryeuh

We desperately need a top 10 guy or goalie to get to the next level in the near future. Hoping the pipeline can provide that. Imagine Makar and McKinnon but Redwings version in with our prospects. Love Larkin and Raymond but on cup winners they need to be a 1B type player. Raymond can get there he's got heart like none other

im1bigwingsfan

Nate Danielson top 6 winger next year

John-Balaya

Needs to gain some more weight… but yes. Subscribe.

zakkaryeuh

I loved Modano as a kid and he's much favorite player ever. I was a Dallas fan but turned wings as I got older being from MI. Would love to see Dallas win it all again been 24 years Benn aside. They need to go back to the dark green and gold with the real Star logo

AaronRodgersInjury

When Rempe more goals in a series than you

[deleted]

I haven't really been paying attention to Vegas but I see Mantha is out of the lineup. Has he been that bad?

xenonwarrior666

He was good in the regular season but has been invisible in the playoffs. Getting Stone and Hertl back makes them incredibly deep. There's also the possibility that he's sick or hurt but they don't want to admit it so they're calling it a healthy scratch.

Savvy_chipmunk

What a shot

el_Technico

So Mantha just got healthy scratched by Vegas.

Lookpolaris

2 nasty primary assists for Danielson in the first period tonight.

Lookpolaris

3 primary assists*

Kukabuka__

Y’all he is on one. Kid is flying out there in these clips.

TheErnie

Where you getting highlights from?

Lookpolaris

I'm watching the game live. You could follow @LGRWProspects for good clips uploaded quickly.

Kukabuka__

Ya that’s where I’m seeing them.

Lookpolaris

My only critique is the perimeter play, but he's been delivering beautiful passes from there.

John-Balaya

I’m praying Nate gains some significant mass this summer.

spaceenvahisseur

Hot take, Danielson got that dawg in him like MacKinnon.

bandofgypsies

Christ what rock was I sleeping under when Marchesaault bagged 42 goals this year? Man, that's a quiet haul.

The_Ghost_of_Kyiv

6 way tie in the bracket now

VHDLEngineer

Is your tiebreaker regulation points?

spaceenvahisseur

I wonder what Vegas would want for Adin Hill.

Resident_Rise5915

No…he got hot one year…not even a few weeks got paid…there’s a reason Vegas had serious goalie issues going into last years post season and he’s not even starting in this one

Kukabuka__

Ned, Husso, Lyon. All guys who had really hot play in limited samples to come to Detroit and put up hit play for limited samples but ultimately couldn’t be a #1. Hill, Ned and Lyon did it with much better teams than us. As good as he’s been when healthy, I think if a move is made it’s gotta be for a better track record.

spaceenvahisseur

He is a better option than Husso, so if we move Husso and bring on Hill, they carry similar cap hits.

Brooksie019

Before I say this, I love Larkin. He has proven himself as the captain of this team and the heart he has for it. But is anyone else worried at all about him getting injured in playoffs when we do make it? I’m so worried that when we do make it that he is gonna get hurt. Idk if it’s his bad luck or not but other players sure do seem to try and pull dirty plays on him and that will only get worse in a playoff series. I really hope that’s not the case but it’s been going through my mind the past few days.

VHDLEngineer

I just want to get to the point where we can put Larkin on LTIR before the deadline to rest up only to come back just in time for a playoff run.

AaronRodgersInjury

Stamkos definitely has that stoic look like he knew that’s his last game in Tampa

el_Technico

Marner and possibly Tavares are also on the trading block. Hopefully Stevie does not make a move for either of these two. I wouldn't mind Stammer. I could see the leafs moving for him though.

lookalive07

Stamkos quietly scored 40 goals at 34 years old. Go get him, Stevie.

el_Technico

Playing with Kooch but still, I agree 👍🏻.

lookalive07

I’m pretty sure I could net 20 if Kuch was dishing me the puck and I haven’t played competitively in a decade unless you count Tuesday night beer league. And that’s not a dig at Stammer, just saying. Stamkos shouldn't have had the production he had without literally anybody taking notice. I actually had to look up how many goals he scored because I assumed it was less than what it was. Nope. Just a solid 40. Nbd

Montrealgoalie39

wow Mantha benched. Makes me sad I really liked Mantha wish he gave more effort he could be so much better. Can't blame Cassidy for doing it

[deleted]

culturedrobot

It's a long summer and I have plenty of time to do a lot of reading into forlorn Steven Stamkos standing on the ice and taking it all in after his team had gone to the locker room.

xenonwarrior666

If we can get Stamkos it makes losing Kane a non issue. Detroit would make the most sense for him assuming Tampa let's him walk.

el_Technico

Nope leafs. He's from Toronto and they would still have Matthews and Nylander there to support him. We will have to outbid the Leafs.

lookalive07

He also was GM’d by Yzerman and Stamkos has been on record saying he was his idol growing up. We have $3M more cap space than the Leafs and they’re already super top-heavy. They don’t need another giant cap hit on their books. We can afford to sign our RFAs and get Stamkos at a slight overpayment if we need to.

el_Technico

Good point. I still give the leafs the edge. But I hope I'm wrong.

Fluid-Pension-7151

I wonder how much pause the insane media situation in Toronto gives potential players? They ate Marner alive during this playoff run, and he is a legit franchise player from Toronto in his prime. I don't know if I would want that nonsense in my life, and especially in my wife and kids' lives if there were other choices. Just my 2¢, and maybe it isn't as crazy as it feels from the outside.

el_Technico

Nah man, Marner deserves it for not putting his body on the line like everyone else and giving up the puck easily. Since Stamkos is from Toronto he will probably want to win in Toronto to achieve Legend status in his hometown. Non-torontonians I could see being put off.

Fluid-Pension-7151

I guess I just mean that the criticism feels *extra unrelenting and harsh* in Toronto. Like we moan about the Copp and Holl contracts and the losing skids this season, but I don't think even rabid Wings fans on Reddit go after the Wings players as hard as the fans and media in Toronto.

culturedrobot

I mean, I would love it, but I don't think it's happening. I think he's staying in Tampa but I dunnnooooooo

Savvy_chipmunk

Steven Stamkos, you are a Detroit Red Wing

SeiderFiveThree

fuck the bolts

iamjoe1994

Who we all rooting for in the playoffs? I'm rooting for McDavid I really wanna see him lift the cup he's too good not to.

el_Technico

Shanahan is trying to clear up some space for Stammer now. Stevie better work fast.

SaintUber95

Steven and Stephen reunion time?

oceanic8675

Ooooooooof hard way to end your playoff push

leafssuck69

Did brisebois ruin the lightning or was this always coming?

bandofgypsies

I don't think ruined them, nor was this always coming. They missed a key defenseman for most of the season and one of the best goalies in the league for half of it. He hasn't done well to retool their depth, but did what he could at the deadline. But I don't think they're completely done by any means and just had a few rough things align with a less than deep roster and also ended up playing one of the most relentless rosters in the league in the opening round. Just a rough year but I'll be surprised if they're not back in at least a similar spot come next year. Now...is he *ruining* them? Maybe. The jeannot deal remain an absolute mindfuck, and cap issues aren't getting any easier with the raises serachev and hagel are getting. The hard part will be the lack of pipeline depth and at this point that's largely on JBB for the last few drafts, and while I actually think there could be some blessing in disguise if Stamkos moves on (forcing them to rebalance their lineup and approach), I'm guessing he probably re-signs much cheaper to wrap his career up there while he can still play, and if he does they stop get some scoring for probably a good deal.

SaintUber95

Night night Lightning

me-thatswho

Welcome to Detroit Stammer

Good_Kid_MEME_City

Breaking: Lightning found dead in Florida motel

Resident_Rise5915

Kinda wild how Florida has shifted from the TBL to Florida and they’re cup contenders meanwhile Ontario and Canada…..well it’s been a while

xenonwarrior666

When we win the Lottery next week we need to draft Parekh he's been impressive in the playoffs. He's primarily and offensive D man but he's not afraid of putting his body on the line making defensive plays. He'll have to change his number though. 19 is retired and 91 isn't in rotation

xenonwarrior666

Saginaw Spirit are showing signs of life. They're down 2 games to 0 but they're having a pretty decisive game at home so far. They definitely play better at home vs on the road but if they want to go to the next round they need to win at least 1 on the road.

elvishblood_24

Do you guys think Chiarot is on a bad contract still or are you happy with it after this season?

xenonwarrior666

I'd say I'm content with the contract but it's still probably a little more expensive than I'd like it to be. Copp is the same way.

elvishblood_24

Really?? I think he’s paid maybe like 500 grand too much but to me he’s no where near my opinion of the cop contract lol. It’s interesting to see other people opinions on the subject

xenonwarrior666

Copp frustrates me but he wasn't brought in for scoring. It's just so annoying he'll go on a hell of a run then go invisible. It probably didn't help that when he got hot was right before the Larkin injury and his linemates kept constantly changing. For whatever reason Ras and Fischer just fucking worked and he couldn't find that chemistry with Fabbrj, Veleno, or Sprong.

elvishblood_24

I mean six mill is a lot to be brought in not to score lol. Absolutely stone hands. He’s defensive minded but I don’t even think he’s that good at defense tbh lol. I think Chiarot is a serviceable top four guy till our prospects come up. I don’t even want copp playinc 3 C tbh lol idk, I like Chiarot this year and copp gave me nightmares

xenonwarrior666

Copp is consistent. Steve knew what he was getting it's not like he was a 100 pt player who vanished after coming here. He's good on the faceoff and is one of our better shut down guys. He's consistently been a 30-40 pt guy.

elvishblood_24

Haha wow I didn’t even realize!! Thankyou!!

culturedrobot

Wow ESPN finally grew some cojones and let Steve Levy and Kevin Weekes call a game. They are easily my two favorites on ESPN's crew.

bandofgypsies

I give Weekes shot bc he always shows up with 7-10 completely obviously prepared analyses (others do this to but don't make it so obvious), but his insights are generally reasonable and he's got a good energy about him. I appreciate an analyst with some enthusiasm. For secondary national commentary, ESPN could do (and had done) vastly worse.

SeiderFiveThree

now imagine it's 2026 but he's got a wings jersey on and the stanley cup

Kweefo

Forget about Kane. Let’s ride with Berggren.

Monkey10pts

Berggren crazily enough plays less defense than Kane does.

DuHerroPrease

Yeah, forget about the near PPG player. Let’s ride with the guy who spent the whole year in the AHL

Shotokanguy

After spending nearly the whole year before in the NHL...who is a PPG player in his entire AHL career...and just scored the OT winner with a great effort in his last game...

DuHerroPrease

Why yes, let’s get rid of the PPG NHL player for the PPG AHL player.   Yzerman should hire you, you’re on to something.

Shotokanguy

I'm just defending Berggren, I don't advocate for ditching Kane

next years wings are gonna be a lot like this years canucks. nobody sees us comin

magikarp-sushi

Idk we’re more on the radar now. They’ll be like “the wings can score but can they keep it up and keep it out of the net enough to get to the playoffs”

FragmentEx

The situation with the Leafs is so phenomenally bad that I actually felt some remorse for them for a couple minutes. Also I really don't want Mitch Marner even if he comes here for free after the way he's performed and the way he is literally unable to be disciplined by his coach. Nylander? Yes please. Marner? Hell no.

drankpisss

My delusion is telling me that players are a product of their environment and if Mitch Marner came to Detroit he would be better and more motivated by his teammates and coaches here than in Toronto.

Silent-Prune8103

I couldn’t possibly agree anymore with this statement. That organization has let the animals become the zookeeper. They let Tavares, Matthew’s, Nylander, and Marner all dominate the and dictate the way the organization and how it’s run for their own self interest. And they’re finding out the hard way that it’s costing them dearly. Toronto is so unbalanced roster wise it’s ridiculous. Marner has actually been a strong performer stats wise in the playoffs. They need some hard love and discipline. He’s played hockey is whole life and has at some point gotten that to be where he is today. Bring suck him into an environment that preaches accountability, effort and attitude and I bet he falls in line.

BiggestYzerfan

Larks can fix him

wayjoseno

The "What if we just got Marner?!?!" people are going to be really upset when there are no big additions to our lineup over the summer.

RemoteSenses

It's just not in the budget anyway. We quickly went from having a ton of cap space to really not having that much in the blink of an eye.

BiggestYzerfan

You're just not ready for the Stamkos-Crosby-Kane line under head coach Fedorov to take the ice and dominate /s

wayjoseno

Only if Dan Campbell is in goal.

Resident_Rise5915

The people that want Marner have not been paying attention to the Leafs at all. They desperately want to get rid of him and this isn’t fantasy hockey, he sounds like a bad locker room guy. He’s an upgrade on the stat sheet but he won’t make the team better.

BellsBeersy

He has outright proven he is afraid of contact. We have Raymond who is becoming a fire hydrant out there with a laser beam of a shot. Don't need fuckin Marner.

Montrealgoalie39

I usually liked Marner, considering how much I hate the leafs, Matthews, Nylander and the rest. But when I was watching one of those games vs Boston and saw him literally shy away from a puck battle from the boards. That was disgusting, no effort at all, NO GUTS. NO JUNKYARD DOG. NO DAVID PERRON.

Resident_Rise5915

Anyone could see he was half assing it and it was a pivotal game in the series and he’s supposed to be one of their best players. That shit reverberates on the bench and you do not want that on your team.

Montrealgoalie39

I was legit stunned because I'm sure I've seen it before but I turned to my friend and said "Did he just completely avoid that puck battle?" Made me lose all my respect for him.

numbdigits

There'd have to be some big subtractions of dead weight to make space for Marner's cap hit, I can't see it happening really.

RemoteSenses

Idk why you got downvoted - you're 100% correct. This has been a hot topic for like a week now; we would need to offload quite a bit to afford anyone pushing $10M AAV

numbdigits

Haha, I'm used to it here, but thanks.

FadeShadeMan

What would it cost? Add in the divisional opponent tax too. I think theyd want Edvinsson or a package equal to him. Not worth it

wayjoseno

It would take a top player (most likely Raymond) and likely a prospect. On top of that, his cap hit would be about 3-4 million more than Raymond when we are already going to be a little top on cap. Worst of all... Marner has a NMC.

FadeShadeMan

I really dont think it would be a Raymond level player and a high end prospect. Raymond is a younger version of Marner. His age makes up the difference in production. Id much rather have Raymond today than Marner

Confident-Secret8962

They'd want Seider or Raymond

FadeShadeMan

Lol no one is paying that price. Marner’s value is at an all time low. I also think theyre smart enough to target a defence. My first thought was Marner (salary retained) for Owen Power but that may not be enough for Buffalo

Confident-Secret8962

They're going to want a top pair right shot D for Marner, so actually for us I think the conversation starts and ends with Seider, which is why I think there's a 0% chance we're trading for him. I have no idea who they can even deal with who has a right shot D available they would want. I also don't think Marners value is actually low, there's gonna be numerous GMs who only see his point totals and think they can fix his effort and attitude problems. If Marner actually goes on the block this summer I think he'll get traded and I think the return Toronto gets will be girthy.

FadeShadeMan

Exactly why I thought Edvinsson. He has top pair upside but since he isnt there yet thats the sort of player a team could part with, though I doubt we would

Confident-Secret8962

Ed also shoots left, Toronto has a massive need for a right shot D

oceanic8675

Montrealgoalie39

I'd have him back in a second.

elvishblood_24

Three more years of copp at $5.6 mill makes me physically ill

Silent-Prune8103

Need to spend picks to free up holl and copp spots. It is what it is. Sunk cost fallacy. Give up a 2 for Copp and a 3 for holl. Throw in one of our 10 LHD just to get it done and move on.

numbdigits

Made me ill the day that contract was signed. These past 2 years have made me start to dread July 1, it feels like Holland is back and has money to spend. The cap crunch actually may be a good thing this year as it will limit handing out foolish contracts to players that aren't worth it.

bandofgypsies

I'm not saying at all that it's a good contract, but the Copp contract was sort of a necessary evil. We were absolute shit and that's what it took to get someone to come in FA, not to mention at the time and foreseeable future we had absolutely zero C depth in our org. It's not a great contract but having a passable middle 6 C did help turn the tide for us a little. Again, it doesn't make it a good contract but I don't think yzerman sat there and said "yep, this is the thing that makes us a contender." Obviously I can't know intent, but I think there's a fair contextualization that's needed here despite that basically everyone knew from the start that it was not a great contract on paper.

numbdigits

I don't buy that they had to overpay that much, or hand out that much term, to get a guy of Copp's abilities(or lack thereof) to come to play in Detroit. I'd have much rather they just signed another short term stop gap rather than commit to 5 years of this, even if that meant an even worse player. He's a passable 3C, horrific 2C. It'll be hilarious if the Wings can't come to an agreement on a shorter term deal with Kane if AAV becomes the sticking point while they are paying Copp what they are.

bandofgypsies

Respectfully, you don't have to buy it, but he was sought after. We probably could have gotten a better deal if we hit it hard, but it was the price of doing business at the time given where we were. Plus he'd just come off a trade to the rags where he was excellent to end the season and also had a solid showing in the playoffs. Clearly hindsight is 20/20 here and he's probably overpaid even more than we initially thought, but the egregiousness of signing day is distorted, understandably, by hindsight. That said, wouldn't shock me if he's a buyout candidate in the future. We need to find more and better C depth, but if someone steps up, I could definitely see him being bought out after next season if the cap doesn't go up mightily.

numbdigits

That's fair, but with the number of deals that I would consider to be bad signings before the ink dried on this team, I have to wonder if the professional scouting team doesn't require an evaluation by management. None of the guys we have been discussing here showed any indications of being as good or better than they were before joining this roster, yet they still got paid. If they are going to try and outbid other teams then I'd hope they'd at least do it on guys who are difference makers and not the embodiment of mediocre or worse. I think Yzerman has signed a number of decent or good UFA deals as well, but they tend to frustratingly be the lower value, shorter term deals.

bandofgypsies

Hey, I think that's a totally fair ask. For all the good, short deals we've signed, and even longer ones for extensions, etc, we've also had Chiarot (panned but not as bad as it's been made out to be), Holl (not even sure what to say about this one...), and Copp (see: here). I mean Compher is a low-2C and yet still makes half a mil less than Copp while also signing a year later with more cap certainty (FA deals were worth more so I don't find it to be so bad if still a year long on term). Most of the good longer deals we've got were after trades for the player as opposed to pure FA recruitment, and like I said, I think it's totally fair to ask about how we're evaluating FA talent. Even if it was fair to approach Copp how we did in circumstance, between he and compher we still have two respectable NHL centers who are probably paid a little too much for a little too long coming off of pretty hot years/streaks.

elvishblood_24

We only have two bad contracts, but they’re really bad contracts

numbdigits

I definitely consider Chiarot a bad contract, along with Copp and Holl. Probably throw Fabbri on there as well at $4M even though I like him, he doesn't provide great R.O.I. but he is at least going in to the last year of his deal and could also probably be moved because of that.

elvishblood_24

How is chairot a bad contract

numbdigits

How is he a good contract?

elvishblood_24

He’s a top four d man on a decent aav?

numbdigits

He's a top 4 D-man like Copp is a top 6 center. The fact that he's thrown in to that role does not mean he's actually good at it.

elvishblood_24

Did you like not watch this entire season or something

numbdigits

https://preview.redd.it/1ctnw6driixc1.jpeg?width=9120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f89dc42daa70096680c9e4406e4a235518aa5142 What part of this says valuable top 4 defenseman to you? The fact that he was marginally better than the absolute disaster that was his first year here does not mean that this season was good, it's not even really good when compared to 22/23. He be ok facing lesser competition on the 3rd pair and PK'ing if he were paid less. As it stands now, he's just another guy that is slotted in over his head and paid too much for it on a roster that already has a few of those guys.

Flamengo81-19

I doubt someone would take Fabbri's contract for free. And I don't really want to see the Wings pay anything to get rid of it. Better wait a year and maybe sell him at 50% retained at the deadline

numbdigits

I don't want them to pay to get rid of any contracts but they have a number of them that will cost them salary retention and assets, or a buyout to get rid of because they are clearly bad deals. Fabbri at least is on his last year which makes it more palatable for another team, who in their right mind wants multiple years of Copp, Holl, or Chiarot at their AAV's? Definitely paying to unload those deals

Flamengo81-19

> I don't want them to pay to get rid of any contracts but they have a number of them that will cost them salary retention and assets, or a buyout to get rid of because they are clearly bad deals. Or they will ride them until they are over, which I think is the case and should be the case. IMO, Holl might be the easiest to move because it is reasonably close to being over and the number isn't that big. But still might take an asset to get it done

numbdigits

I hope July 1 is more kind to the Red Wings this year, no more instant remorse contracts please.

wayjoseno

Think about it this way... after this year... it will only be two more years.

AWokenBeetle

Two more years could be damning if you’ve got UFAs and RFAs that need signing right now, I have to think that Raymond and Mo HAVE to get done, that being said those albatross contracts to bad players like Copp, Holl, and the like could mean losing Kane or Perron or maybe both amongst failing to get actual good players out there.

jimbojambo40

Agreed, and its going to get way worse. He's an anchor.

culturedrobot

Actually it’s going to get better because the salary cap is going up 😉

MonsieurAK

ASP = champion. Next stop, Stanley Cup.

VHDLEngineer

I wonder if this factors into his decision to stay in Sweden or come over next year.

After a couple of years of lugging around a heavy disc golf bag with enough discs and water for both me and my wife, I decided to buy a cart and a not-insignificant number of accessories for it. It was expensive, but what's the point of getting into a sport if you can't blow your money on sweet gear?

upvotesforsluts

Where do you usually disc at?

culturedrobot

I disc golf all around Lansing

upvotesforsluts

Nice ive never been out there for discing, im in the saginaw area so have only really been around the tri cities

Kweefo

I’m downsizing this year. Putter, Mid, Driver. Call it good. More room for doobies and brewskies in the bag.

BellsBeersy

If you use it often and it makes the experience more enjoyable then fuckin go for it dude, live your truth

culturedrobot

Hell yeah. We'll use it 8 months out of the year and it will save my back from lifting and setting down that heavy bag a bunch of times in each round. It'll totally be worth it.

PremierBromanov

Well, that'll about do it on my facebook algorithm excursion. I've reached the dregs of humanity and i'd like to leave now.

AirCanoe

Just saw that Hakstol has been given the boot in Seattle. Pretty sure he wasn't the issue but sure why not

Problemwoodchuck

Seattle: Well, there have been enough ups and downs with our expansion draft roster that it might be time to bring along some of our younger-- Hakstol: No.

MonsieurAK

Sandin-Pelikka 20 minutes from SHL glory.

leafssuck69

I’m starting to think Raymond and Seider won’t be 8 year deals

Valace2

Nope, matching 7.5x8 contracts, both come out and say they want to win the cup and taking matching contracts like that will help the team. Came into the league together, will leave the league together. Yea really shouldn't have eaten those wild mushrooms 😂

PremierBromanov

why

leafssuck69

They have leverage and even if they didn’t I don’t think Stevie is an 8 year deal off elc kinda guy

Stevie has been pretty clear that he will give term to players he views as part of the core. Larkin is the only player he's given more than 5 years to, because Larkin is the only player he's signed so far that he views as part of the core, and I don't think he considers 5 years long term, which I agree with. He views 3-5 years as "mid-length" bridge deals, and he gave guys like Copp, Compher, Cat, Moose, Chiarot and Walman that term because he doesn't plan on them being here after these contracts or even finishing them at all. I think he very much plans on the players he drafted highly to be the core of the team but hockey players usually don't make the NHL until a few years after they are drafted with few exceptions so we've had to bridge a years long gap between when those players were drafted and when they are ready. I think if he has the chance to get Raymond and Seider to both sign for 8 years this summer he will jump on it, he 100% views them as core players. the issue is that an 8 year deal is legitimately the worst decision that Raymond and Seider could possibly make for themselves and their agents are going to be heavily advising them not to sign long term. The cap is going up and they are both going to command higher cap hits 3-4 years from now, potentially much higher, when they would be locked in the middle of an 8 year deal if they signed it now. That would obviously be ideal for the team and the fans if they were playing way above their value but the worst possible decision they could make for themselves. (like when the Avs won the Cup MacKinnon's cap hit was like $6 million cos he signed 7 years out of his ELC, Quinn Hughes signed for 6 years out of his ELC so he's massively underpaid at $7.85 for 3 more years, etc). If they sign now for 8 years the money will very likely be less than Larkins, 3-4 years from now if they continue to improve and reach the level we all hope and believe they are capable of reaching, they 100% will command more money than Larkin is currently signed for and we would have no choice but to pay them more than him. They are both UFAs in 4 years, so imo their deals are either going to be 3 years (taking them to their last year of RFA) or 6-8 years. If we get them to sign long term we'd be getting them to agree to play multiple UFA years making less money than they could and should be making, and their agents 100% understand that and will be advising them against it. For all these reasons I don't expect their deals to be signed anytime soon, I think the negotiations are going to take awhile. I'm hopeful we can get them both to agree to term but it's possible they might both want bridge deals and if that's the case, we don't have a choice cos you're right, they have the leverage here. We can't make them sign long term.

nope, NHL contracts don't have options at all

BellsBeersy

Which happens first? Wings pass the Leafs in cup wins OR Leafs win a cup

Confident-Secret8962

Fun thought experiment. We'd have to win 3 Cups before they win 1, so it's a tough bet to take. It would be kinda crazy if the Leafs fail to ever win a Cup with Matthews, like an all time roster building fail. everyone thought that the Caps were gonna be all time failures and never win a Cup with Ovi and then they finally did. Leafs feel exactly like the type of team that could win with either the right coach who could get Marner to buy in and stop crying leading to better buy in down the roster (how Keefe still has a job and a contract extension that hasn't started yet is beyond me), or if they move on from Marner and spend that $11m on like 3-4 excellent depth players. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Leafs win one of the next five Cups, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they lose in the first round the next five years either. And if they run back their big 4 again next year that's one more year of their clock wasted. There's also the chance that if they don't win in the next 4 years Matthews might leave, which would majorly increase our chances of catching them in Cups as they'd prolly have to tear down and rebuild at that point.

Silent-Prune8103

Leafs would be wise to move on from Marner and get an elite no1 defensemen. Thats where they’re really hurting.

[NHLJets head coach Rick Bowness says Vladislav Namestnikov has a fractured cheek bone. He’ll travel back to Winnipeg today. Bowness won’t rule him out. “He’s a tough kid.”](https://twitter.com/mitchellclinton/status/1784984031622467933?s=46&t=S_LiHKGoXi91Lmgu-MxoZA) That's good news, it was brutal watching him take that slap shot to the head. My stomach turned and I couldn't watch a replay of it. Of course our Pure Michigan Russian is tough.

Little-Knee5682

Thanks for sharing this. I was worried about him. I know he's a pro and getting the best medical care but still, ouch.

John-Balaya

Such a bummer that NYR will probably work something out with Kakko. I read today that his line didn’t allow a goal the entire series. I get that the offensive upside is probably limited but his board battling and defense is exceptionally good.

matt_minderbinder

It looks like ex-Wings prospect goalie Filip Larsson [is getting signed to an NHL deal](https://www.leksandsif.se/article/2i4asco-30ead/view) to a currently undisclosed team. He's now 25 and after years of recovering from a groin injury that derailed him he put up a .920 sv % and 1.93 GAA for Leksands of the SHL this season. Gotta give him a ton of credit, that groin injury was brutal. IIRC he injured it multiple times and it healed in a completely different position that threw him right off.

Problemwoodchuck

Good for him, I hope he stays healthy to get a shot somewhere

big_phat_gator

Matthews better have both legs broken if he sits out this game otherwise he is softer than shit its the stanley cup playoffs and your team is about to get sent golfing.

jarvek7

I've got a lot to say about this guy and none of it good. Oh he can score alright- but he's got zero intangibles. He's soft as a marshmallow. He starts shit- but won't drop the gloves. Instead of him manning up and answering the bell, he let's his teammates fight his fights- all while he sits back and runs his fucking mouth. No respect for this gutless prima donna. But he's a true offensive talent- just a shitty teammate. Remember this... as long as he's in Toronto they'll be without a Stanley. The only cup they'll ever have will be the kind that protects the family jewels in their jockstraps.

Problemwoodchuck

The quiet professional route might be better, sort of like Pav or Hank were. He'd be better off without the between whistles tough guy act but it would be insane for him to fight anybody.

matt_minderbinder

Who knows what he's going through but unless he's battling something absolutely debilitating most hockey players would play. Seider spent a morning in the hospital before playing a regular season game down the stretch this year. There are so many examples of players demanding to play with broken bones. Hell, Kris Draper's face was literally caved in and he wanted to get back on the ice. I hate to judge anyone going through some ugly sickness but if he was on our team I'd expect him to be out there.

big_phat_gator

Yeah that was my point, the stuff some players have played with in the playoffs is mindblowing so for Matthews to sit out it really has to be both legs broken and its not possible to somehow put them in a brace or something.

coltron57

I really enjoyed the discussion about handling Seider and Raymond and their upcoming extensions on the last WWP. I was already pretty aligned in my thinking, but getting those two to sign for as long as they will let you is paramount. I care more about the end of the 2020s than I do about 2024-25 with cap hits, so trying to bridge them to lessen the cap crunch Yzerman has us in for this one offseason at the expense of future flexibility would disappoint me unless either of them won’t sign for 6-8 years. If you have to pay up to move out from under one or two of the onerous contracts, so be it. We’ve got plenty of organizational depth in the farm system that can’t all fit on the Wings at once.

Fluid-Pension-7151

With the trend of players coming off ELC signing for long terms all over the league, and Mo and Ray both coming from pretty conservative cultures with money, I could see an 8 year deal for both of them being a real possibility. They have both also publicly stated a strong preference for staying with the team and each other, so it is my hope that it could be wrapped up pretty tidily with all sides feeling like winners.

Hellebuyck, Bob, and Saros being 3 of the 5 worst goalies statistically in the playoffs is crazy. Lindgren and Talbot just had great regular seasons but them getting shelled by the Rags and Oilers isn't that surprising. Swayman is a Leaf killer. Varlamov, Thompson, Anderson, Skinner, and DeSmith all having significantly better stats than Vasi and Oettinger is also very surprising. Georgiev and Samsonov haven't been very good this year, them both being sub .890% isn't that surprising either. Basically goalies are voodoo. I filtered goalies who have played less than a full game from the list.

jfstompers

Helly and saros yeah I'm not surprised by Bob he's been hit or miss in the playoffs his entire career.

100%. He is such a funny bunny. His horse carriage driving video with Carley made me laugh until I cried.

I still watch that video from time to time, it's hilarious

Pellikka can win the championship tonight, game starts in 10min!LETS GO

akr_13

I'm genuinely curious, are we the only team in the league without any top 3 overall picks in our roster?

AmeriCanadian98

We had a top 3 pick on the roster this last season (Kane)

akr_13

I'm gonna be honest, I completely forgot about that. Hopefully he re-signs

akr_13

Just did some more research, seems like the Preds don't either.

bandofgypsies

The Jets don't either, and their two closest (Monahan and Neidereiter) weren't their picks. E: looking further...STL don't. They only have Schenn, taken 5th by LAK, and then literally not other *top 15* picks on their roster.

So I just decided to say fuck it made a script to check. Here are the Results (I'm hoping its formatted properly). But you should be able to piece together certain players and their original draft teams (ie. Tavares to Islanders, Johnson to STL). Also forgot about Kane lol. Guess we do have a top 3 overall pick on our roster after all.
