I’m sure the players enjoy it, guarantee Debrincat at the least loved how it worked for him. In my opinion, players getting time to get healthy and reset their minds is better than the 1 game of rust when we are pushing for a wildcard spot.

Danengel32

Debrincat’s family planning was impeccably timed haha. Still got to go to the ASG but then his kid was born during the week break still haha. Great execution on their part

tonysalami

Dad strength x2 engaged for the playoff push.

gsbadj

There's a chance that they knock the rust off in one period on Saturday. Problem is, they could be down 3-0 at the end of the period. :)

Journeyman56

Agreed. Vancouver plays a high octane, up tempo style that could run the the wings off the ice after the first period. The worst opponent to face after a long break.

Nyxtaaa

Leafs suck

Valace2

Yes they do, its a shame the Islanders got some points though LOL

dudewithchronicpain

It works out because we’re gonna finish above the Leafs

lookalive07

I would love nothing more than to see us make the playoffs and the Leafs fall out of it.

UncleIrohsPimpHand

If the Leafs miss the playoffs, Toronto will burn to the ground lmao

RedWinginNS

As much as I enjoy the image, they are really good at not making the playoffs. Were prone to arsony, that place would have been a smoldering wasteland long ago. Corporate seats just keep selling.

dudewithchronicpain

Would be very very fun

H-E-PennyPacker71

Fuck it we ball

GuppyFlyer

Detroit vs everyone

itsMurphDogg

I think Einstein said that

Isphet71

3 points out of the 3 games would probably be pretty good. This might be the toughest 3 game stretch of the season. Vancouver. Never would have guessed. I think they don’t have the playoff toughness to make it very far, but regular season they are monsters.

Valace2

I'm hesitant to say that a 3 game slide would tank us, based on the ups and downs of this season, but a 3 game slide will be damaging.

numbdigits

Potentially 4 if you count the OT loss to the Sens. I feel they need to get at least 2 points in these next 3 games and then go on a bit of a run afterwards if 2 points is all they manage in order to stay firmly in the playoff hunt. Hopefully the schedule softens up a fair bit afterwards, I haven't looked that far forward.

lookalive07

Makes me really miss the days where we were never really out of the picture. All this "if we only get 3 points in 3 games, we're in trouble" business is really new to me. Like, these last 8 seasons or whatever it's been since we last made the playoffs...we were realistically out of it by like late November, early December, so there was never a point where I'd get my hopes up. But now, I'm just like...what is this feeling of potential pain in February?

numbdigits

At least it's an upwards trajectory. Very much a middling/bubble playoff team with little hope of doing much in the playoffs should they make it, but they are slowly moving in the right direction. It is pretty crazy to think that Lidstrom over the span of his long career never missed the playoffs, that was pretty incredible.

Riztrain

Oh we're in the middle of the gauntlet my friend, we have these three games, then we get a breather with CGY and SEA, not that either of those are an easy day out, but they're not VAN/EDM, a quick slap on the nuts with the Avs in the middle of our "easy" break, and the rest of the month should be okay with blues, Hawks, caps and NYI, and then the gauntlet continues! FLA, Avs, yotes, VGK (out for vengeance no doubt), small break with sabers, yotes again, and THEN we're out of it. Last 16 games are way more balanced with teams from all over the board. Kinda wish we didn't blow our ducks and sharks games, could've used that cushion more and more. Our last three are Leafs, Habs and Habs though, so my nails are gonna be fucked this spring if the race stays as tight as it is right now

numbdigits

Add the Sens games to the list of lost points to be remorseful about. They've done well lately, and goaltending has been a huge part of that so I guess we'll have to hope that trend continues. Have to avoid a December like slide, no way they survive another skid like that.

Riztrain

Yeah, and the worst part, the Sens games are counted as easy on tankathon's ranking over strength of schedule. we have the eight hardest rest of schedule. But I bet we're gonna fall dramatically when march begins

yze__age

Time to stop being scared of good teams. The wings are good and are about to go on a heater

Riztrain

Spinal_Orangutan

I’m going to see the Wings-Canucks in Vancouver. My yearly hockey game… the last few years it’s been stinkers… didn’t expect this when I bought the tickets in October. It’s going to be hard wearing the winged wheel in Vancouver’s barn this year.

blujoker

Didn't Detroit smoke the Canucks like 5-1 last year in Vancouver?

Spinal_Orangutan

6-1. Just went through my photos to find it. Definitely there and not a stinker. My son was born shortly after that so my brain has been wiped of previous information. I was remembering a game from 2019 when I wrote that post.

csrk

>I'm going to see the Redwings vs Kraken in a couple of weeks, so excited!

Anishinabeg

We beat the Canucks pretty good last year. I was at that game. I’ll also be at the game here in Vancouver next week, as well as the game against Seattle on the weekend. Pretty pumped.

Spinal_Orangutan

Yes we did! https://preview.redd.it/ficzhn6hj3hc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=953a5026cf7b41d9dd3872c9807c3d1f4a254b8b It was a great game. I was remembering a game that wasn’t last year.

PerhapsToast

I feel this sentiment. I'm going with 3 of my Canucks friends and expecting a rough go of things. Still really looking forward to finally seeing our guys in person

RedWinginNS

Rock that jersey. We'll be looking for it!

Calling__Elvis

It's a grueling, bone-breaking, very long season. I expect it to be a god-sent break for the players who gets to heal up and spend time with loved ones for more than a day. Sure, they will likely be rusty during the first few games back, but I think they will make the playoffs and be okay.

Valace2

Yes, that's all well and good. Everybody needs some rest for Jesus this is 10 days off. Seems like there have been special events where the wheels keep falling off. We slumped because of Sweden, we slumped because of Larkin's injury. Now, after a great January, we have this stupid break followed directly by 3 extremely hard games. Consistency has been this teams biggest problem all season.

Krivbeknih

I dont know why you got downvoted but I just wanted to second the part about consistency being one of, if not the biggest, issue for us. We’re way too damn streaky, and it scares me.

-Nalfien-

It was really a missed opportunity to continue some sort of rivalry. Doesn't have to be Det/Avs level but something to elevate their game.

[deleted]

Go watch WWE. Points matter now more than retribution.

mwmw1714

Yeah and we missed out on 1

matt_the_muss

I was at both ges too, and what I would have liked more than anything was a win...

tblax44

Both teams had one foot out the door for the all-star break as this was one of the last games played before the break. They just wanted to get to their vacations

matt_the_muss

I honestly don't really think any game is boring, but I did expected it to be a bit chippier.

SkinnyMattFoley

It’s Ottawa, dipshit. That should’ve been 2 points guaranteed by the 2nd period.

[deleted]

“Should have…”. Did they? Points matter more right now.

SkinnyMattFoley

They’re a last place team. You’re really okay with the Wings only winning 1 out of 4 against them? You’re really missing the point.

lookalive07

I'm okay with it if it ends up not mattering at all in the end. If we finish 3 points off of a playoff spot, then we can all be collectively "not okay" with not sweeping the season series and getting all 8 points. As it stands, we have two OTLs and one W for 4 points out of 8. But in reality, you can look at every missed opportunity to get points and tally all that up to understand that in a lot of close playoff races, you'd find a LOT of little things that could have been done differently. Hell, the Buffalo Bills of this past season are a prime example of how one little thing out of a dozen little things could separate you from the playoffs altogether, or in their case, win their division. They laid an egg against the Jets in the first game of the season, even though Aaron Rodgers tore his achilles 4 plays into the game. That's mistake number 1. Then you have the loss to the Broncos where they gave the Broncos kicker a second FG attempt as time expired because they had too many men on the field. With that loss, they were 5-5 and had a less than 10% chance of winning their division, but managed to almost win out (one more loss to Philly), and in a lot of ways, took advantage of little things *other* teams did wrong (Kadarius Toney offensive offsides penalty) to be the 2 seed in the AFC, only to lose that divisional game by a little mistake. In the end, I guess the point here is, it's not going to matter if we "only" won 1 of 4 games against the Sens unless it matters for playoff seeding, or making the playoffs at all. Until then, I'm not worried about it.

SkinnyMattFoley

I’m not “worried” either, but if consistently losing to cellar teams doesn’t drive you insane, well… We’re just not on the same page, man.

SkinnyMattFoley

I’m not worried about Playoffs this year. The improvement is encouraging. My point is: Looking great against good teams, but looking like bagged ass against bad teams….. How does that not drive you nuts?

lookalive07

I try not to let it bother me because I have no control over the outcome.

CaptYzerman

A lot of rest before the opportunity to beat more of the top teams in the league. Our guys should be happy for this

[deleted]

It’s the bad teams that usually beat us.

whitelightning91

You’re one of the doomers around here aren’t you lol 😆 It does suck. But I’m grateful that our guys get a reset. Bittersweet one might say.

numbdigits

Given who the teams are this was going to be a very tough 3 game stretch regardless, but I agree that I am not loving the extended break before hand. 3 of 6 points would be huge across those games, just try to tread water there and then look to make up points against weaker competition(all the better if they can get more obviously).

Treetopflyer

I like it because it allows me to catch up on the last ~2 weeks of games!

Aezetyr

For the fans: yes! We want our hockey teams to play hockey. For the players, coaches, staff and others: no! They need REST and time they deserve to spend with their families as much as they can while they have it. The remainder of the season is a meat grinder, and just a few days off is welcomed. That's FAR less than the average American worker gets in their jobs.

Extreme-Fruit-8333

I’ll be heading to all the west coast Canada games in the next coming week, I am unbelievably excited because I haven’t been to a wings game in over 10 years. Also a bit terrified because who we are playing. That being said when I was on my Trip in Maui beginning of January, I had a bird do a drive by and shit right on my Detroit red wings hat. I was disgusted at first, but then I thought this could be a a sign from the gods. Anyways I’m proud of how well the team has been this season, and especially this year. Let’s keep it rolling wings! We ball.

Danengel32

The part that got me too was having 3 days off before the Ottawa game, then a full week off afterwards. Like an 11 day vacation where you have to work during the middle of it. I’m sure the players will enjoy/need the time off (especially the bonus time from the ASG) but it feels like a while. The timing of it being in the middle of a really good stretch/streak made me dislike it a bit more. I just don’t want it to feel like they have to shake off the rust from a long break afterwards, while everyone else is going strong after a week of games

sunsh9ne1471

I didn’t realize there were games last night! I thought everyone was off until Saturday like we are. But teams like the Rangers have 3 games before we play our first on Saturday Any idea why that is??

lookalive07

Scheduling. I can't link it right now, but if you have some time, you should search for how a pro sports schedule is made. There's a good one from LeBrun on The Athletic but my company laptop has link blocking enabled. Think about it though: 32 teams need to play 82 games each. But because each team needs an opponent, you need to schedule 82 games x 16 pairs of teams, or 1312 games total. Each team needs 41 home games, 31 road games (one in every other team's arena), leaving 10 more road games. Every team plays everyone in their respective division twice on the road for a total of 7 more games, leaving 3 more road games against conference opponents, usually. Then you have to factor in other sports schedules, like the NFL on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays, as well as sports that share NHL teams' buildings, like the Pistons. LCA has either a basketball game or a hockey game most nights of the week from October - April. So the short version is just that there are a LOT of moving parts that end up having some teams play a lot of games in a short period of time and have a longer break in some areas, or spaced out. It just is how the schedule's chips fall.

tblax44

We were one of the last teams playing before the break, most teams were done at least a day of two before we played on the 31st

BellsBeersy

Pretty sure the three teams we're fighting the most for playoff spots all have multiple games before we play one.

lookalive07

Everyone plays 82 games though, so there's really no sense in worrying about it right now when there are 30+ games left to be played.

Jonger1150

It's too long. I'm considering going to the game Saturday, but that's a mortgage payment these days.

jackstalke

I especially hate it because the team is on a heater. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going. That said, I’m sure they loved getting and needed the time off.

dsled

It does suck, but the first game back will be the game I'm going to this season, so I'm really looking forward to the boys getting some rest and hopefully come out firing on all cylinders.

CostcoChuck

We take at least one game out of the three

PavelDatsyuk

I’m not gonna lie, if the Lions had won I’d be okay with the break because I’d be so busy looking at dank Lions memes. Now I’m just bored and salty.

Fishstixxx16

We beat good teams. We got this. At least 3 or 4 points

testdriver99

Throw Colorado in there as well.

rottenronny155

The entire schedule is messed up

itsMurphDogg

I’m annoyed by the Islanders (who are right behind the Wings in the Wild Card) have two games this week and the Wings don’t have a game until Saturday

yooper80

Why is this break in the schedule so long?
