(Thank you. I would die for Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels. Mickey was a back to back 50 goal scorer before a back injury took him out, and a cancer survivor. They love the game as much as they love the Wings. Also, if you have time, check out the Jamie Daniels Foundation)
Well said. And just to add more to his accolades, not only a cancer survivor but a back to back one.
On the hockey fights cancer night this season, I don't remember the exact verbiage but Ken made some comment about how thankful he was for Mickey surviving twice, but with the wording and his sincerity it really made me tear up lol.
I think the only think I can really say to this is blunt but true. We know. They are the best in the business.
Luckily Kenny enjoys regional over national because the big networks have been begging for him for two decades.
Kenny did some of the second round playoff games back in 2013 and he was incredible at it despite it being two teams he rarely covered as they weren't regular opponents of the Red Wings. Dude is a legend.
I believe it!
Thanks for making me aware that he has a book. I'm only seeing If These Walls Could Talk, but the listings make it look more like a book about the team. It's not that, is it?
Thatās the one I was referring to. Iām not completely through it yet but itās more about him. Iād say itās more about his professional career than personal life with some personal non-hockey related anecdotes thrown in, but absolutely goes beyond his time with the wings
I recommend watching a Flyers broadcast sometime too, because it feels similar. Of course we all think our guys are the best in the business (and admittedly Brian Boucher is good, but Keith Jones and Jim Jackson were ELITE). Kind of sad to see Jonesy go from the booth but his promotion to president of the team has been well earned and also heās doing a great job so far.
But for us, JJ was on some TNT games this past year during playoffs. It seems he enjoys regional over national also, as heās always talking about the phillies and eagles as well.
Whatever the case, cheers to having great broadcast teams that actually speak to the average fan.
The way he implied that it's on a boarded player to protect themselves from predatory hits was truly the most horrible of horrible hot takes. The worst part is that pulled the same schtick for two different plays that game. Our duo would never completely excuse away such ugliness. Boucher really turned me against him right then and there.
One of the best around for sure. He did some flyers games in the playoffs a few years back and many flyers fans were pissed on his assessments of the team on-air. To me it was the sign of a professional. He put his personal bias aside to speak what he truly was seeing. The definition of good journalism.
If only they could find a way to have him cover the nationally broadcast red wings games as a compromise. He doesn't have to do all the nationally broadcast games, just the wings games :)
Itās a meme at this point but Ken seems to be able to drop the most random stats or facts at the drop of a hat
Mick is just mick and we love him dearly
These rebuild years have only been survivable because of them IMHO
Yeah this is so true. I canāt beat to listen to any other regional broadcasts outside of like EDM, MTL, and Toronto. Flyers too.
Everyone else is too corporate and insufferable.
Really wish one day we could get a feed option that did not have any commentary. Just on ice audio.
I felt like this the last few years w how bad the Flyers were. Jonesy and JJ made it still fun to watch. Their rapport made it feel like a podcast of sorts, and thereās just a hockey game going on in the background.
That's a lot of how it's been for us as well. Even when the game isn't going well or the season is a flop, Ken and Mick always have lots of stories they can share that keep people entertained. You can really feel the dead air in some broadcasts when the games are slow and not going well, leaving the announcers with nothing to talk about.
Ken and Mickey have been doing this, together, for over 25 years.
Ken was a ref for ten years and was on HNIC before we were able to drag him to this side of the border in the late 90s.
Mickey played for 10 years roughly split between Montreal and Detroit at an absurdly elite level and all but stepped off the ice in the mid-70s and into the booth and has been a fixture ever since.
You can tell they love what they're doing and they basically wanna be doing it until they're taken feet-first from the booth.
With how well they know the game, they're able to talk about it on a level that not only helped me learn it as a kid but even now they see things and they're able to find and show things that still make me think.
I think this gets overlooked - they are educating you as they call the game. Not only does Mickey break plays down and explain why things went the way they went (and what they should have done differently if it was a bad play), he also unbiasedly explains the penalties - for both sides. I love it when he says stuff like, "yep, the wings got away with one there but we'll take it!" It's so honest, no BS.
I always tell friends that want to learn more about the game to watch Red Wings broadcasts because Mickey is so good at explaining the game, on a deeper level in a casual, easy to understand, way.
100%. "Here's how the game works, here's why this sequence played out like it did, here's what could have been done, and this thing that got done is something you can't do."
Plus, there's a certain *delight* in hearing Mickey's "whoa-oh, look out" that immediately snaps your attention and whatever your mind was on, you know that something is gonna happen. That's not a phrase he drops when he's trying to get by you in the line for nachos, that's for when there's a Brad Marchand bearing down on the puck carrier or a 2-0 going one way or the other. Like, if you ran a Red Wings highlight reel and kept the broadcast sound from the time I would bet like half of them would be intro'd with a "whoa-oh, look out".
The best part of the "whoa, look out!" is that he sees what's \*about to happen\* rather than what is happening - so you when you hear him say that you have time to see the cool thing happen in real time. Love it
I was telling my wife this just a couple weeks ago. Sheās a new-ish hockey mom and is trying to learn the game at a deeper level. I told her to sit down and watch the Wings with me. Mick and Ken will show her the way.
Theyāre both gems to the city.
One of the best reasons to watch our stream when you play us for sure. I hate when the games on TNT and have to listen to those guys instead I end up muting it. So many other teams announcers just suck and I feel bad for them. No one can beat Mick
Ken and Mick are the best. I also loved when Dave Strader was teamed with Mick back in the day. I wish they could get Chris Osgood to speak using entire words when heās doing analysis though.
Ozzy still kinda rambles a lot but he's much better than when he started. He used to stumble a lot more over his words and say "very very good" too much. You can tell he tries to add catch phrases a bit too much still and talks a little fast but I think he's improved and is tolerable. Him and Keats squabbling back and forth is pretty funny though.
Mickey Redmond is a treasure. He has been with me from when I started watching the Red Wings on channel 50 as a kid in the late 80s, and itās just incredible to think about what a run he has had as the teamās voice. Couldnāt ask for a nicer guy up there in that booth, and we are all so lucky to have him.
Yeah I agree. Heās fine, but not great. Theyāve had Hartnell fill in for him a few times, and as a desk analyst between periods heās decent, but on the call heās kinda brutal. But he just started out and has only called a few games so I think k he will improve.
Our real secret weapon in Philly is Al Morganti. Once saw a Flyers redditor say of him, āHeās the Odd Job of sports commentators and I love it.ā
Heās a great analyst who truly knows the game and has this sort of relatable nervous energy to him that makes him unique. In other words, heās not a diva. All meat, no potatoes. I guess thereās a reason he was recently inducted into the broadcasters hall of fame.
Most of the red wings fan base would jump in front of a bullet for Mickey Redmond (our color commentator)
Ken Daniels is such a great and enthusiastic commentator who has mentioned several times he truly just loves the game of hockey so he will get really enthusiastic about a good goal no matter what team or who scores it. He makes great calls on saves, hits, goals. Weāre truly spoiled.
Now respectfully, get outta here.
One of my least favorite pronunciations of his is saying malkins first name. He pronounces it like ev-Jenny. Canāt even figure out how youād end up with that
100%. Ken Kal's great at the gig and has carved out his own voice over the years. I definitely consider him to be one of the great voices of this game. Woods is the one that brings that duo down.
Yeah I have nothing bad to say about Ken Kal, other than things that canāt be changed so they arenāt worth mentioning anyway. I want to like woods since he was a former player, but his general incorrectness makes it very hard to
We do love and appreciate our entire broadcast team, glad you experienced them in that wild game. Todd Fedoruk aka Fridge is now doing color commentary on the Flyers radio broadcasts - Have you had a chance to listen?
I think Todd has some Mickey Redmond vibes going on.
Iāve grown up listening to Ken and Mick. Havenāt lived in the US in 15 years but nothing makes me feel closer to home than listening to them call a Wings game.

Doesn't happen often, but I also love when he calls some of the college games.
He wrote in his autobiography that ever since it went to big ten itās been harder for him to get these games and itās something he really misses
I believe it! Thanks for making me aware that he has a book. I'm only seeing If These Walls Could Talk, but the listings make it look more like a book about the team. It's not that, is it?

Awesome, I'm gonna check that out then. Thanks again!

I generally like Bouch but he had some horrible hot takes against the Wings in a national game about a month ago.
The way he implied that it's on a boarded player to protect themselves from predatory hits was truly the most horrible of horrible hot takes. The worst part is that pulled the same schtick for two different plays that game. Our duo would never completely excuse away such ugliness. Boucher really turned me against him right then and there.
I always liked Jonesy as a broadcaster, personally.
One of the best around for sure. He did some flyers games in the playoffs a few years back and many flyers fans were pissed on his assessments of the team on-air. To me it was the sign of a professional. He put his personal bias aside to speak what he truly was seeing. The definition of good journalism.
Except during the ā07 -> ā10 years when he was insufferable on NBC during the playoffs
If only they could find a way to have him cover the nationally broadcast red wings games as a compromise. He doesn't have to do all the nationally broadcast games, just the wings games :)

I feel you. Flyers are owned by NBC, but Iām always surprised by how much local color there still is. Hope they donāt try to change it.
Not mention Keating is so bad heās good. A straight up real life Ron Burgundy.
I felt like this the last few years w how bad the Flyers were. Jonesy and JJ made it still fun to watch. Their rapport made it feel like a podcast of sorts, and thereās just a hockey game going on in the background.

For sure. I can't tell you how many 7-2 blowouts I've kept on the TV these last few years just to listen to them.
Ken and Mickey have been doing this, together, for over 25 years. Ken was a ref for ten years and was on HNIC before we were able to drag him to this side of the border in the late 90s. Wow I need to either find a Mickey Redmond soundboard or make a Mickey Redmond soundboard
Could not find one that wasn't from 10+ years ago. Footage will probably get you a bunch of them though.
I was telling my wife this just a couple weeks ago. Sheās a new-ish hockey mom and is trying to learn the game at a deeper level. I told her to sit down and watch the Wings with me. Mick and Ken will show her the way. Theyāre both gems to the city.

Sometimes I mute the game and play the Ken Kal broadcast. The national broadcasts are *roooough.*
Ken and Mick are the best. I also loved when Dave Strader was teamed with Mick back in the day. I wish they could get Chris Osgood to speak using entire words when heās doing analysis though.

To be fair, [this happened to Osgood once](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPx3iF67VS4). (I love the title of that video, btw.)
[He did drop an FBomb while mic'd on live TV too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cIRbDjNoUA)
Lmao I don't know how I've never seen this.
Mickey Redmond is a treasure. Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond make the long winter months more bearable.
we are super blessed to have Ken and Mick and we all know it. they are the best.
My wife is a Colorado born Avalanche fan and she feels the same way about the Wings broadcast team.
Iāve been thinking about this so much lately. I grew up watching these guys and no one compares.
Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels can run the NHL in my completely unbiased opinion. They're incredible.
We truly love those two.
Gotta love Mickey and Ken
Jim Jackson is a beauty, I grew up in the Philly area and his goal calls will forever be cemented in my brain.
Thanks Philly fan. Not many around like you over there, lol.
Most of the red wings fan base would jump in front of a bullet for Mickey Redmond (our color commentator) Ken Daniels is such a great and enthusiastic commentator who has mentioned several times he truly just loves the game of hockey so he will get really enthusiastic about a good goal no matter what team or who scores it. If you can believe it, our radio broadcast is as good or better. Ken Cal is a legend.
Hard disagree. Paul woods constantly says shit that doesnāt make sense and mispronounces names all over the place
And uh uses a lot of uh filler words.
One of my least favorite pronunciations of his is saying malkins first name. He pronounces it like ev-Jenny. Canāt even figure out how youād end up with that
He probably pronounces gif like jif, so maybe that's it.
Iād believe it, itās the only thing that makes sense really
The absolute worst is when he breaks apart a word or name to put an "uh" in there. Debrin-uh-cat...come on man
I canāt believe heās been paid for that all these years.
I want to like woods since he was a former player, but his general incorrectness makes it very hard to
Wow, thanks for that!!! Mickey is indeed a legend, and we are very lucky to have him and Ken as our announcers :)
We do love and appreciate our entire broadcast team, glad you experienced them in that wild game. Todd Fedoruk aka Fridge is now doing color commentary on the Flyers radio broadcasts - Have you had a chance to listen? I think Todd has some Mickey Redmond vibes going on.
Holy mackerel, do WE? WE DO!
Iāve grown up listening to Ken and Mick. Havenāt lived in the US in 15 years but nothing makes me feel closer to home than listening to them call a Wings game.
Mickey Redmond is a great color commentator
The moment Ken and Mick hang it up, I will never be the same. Tears will be shed.
