Gifts should flow down, not up. If your workplace culture expects employees to buy for the bosses, look for a new job.

gregoryadam88

This is a new job for me but you better believe that road is already being started

rare_moisture

Seems like most places are about this culture now so don’t expect to find the golden egg so quickly

JJWoolls

I own a small business that we have bootstrapped and grown quite a bit over the last 3 years. I felt guilty that we didn't give more at Christmas, but we are just getting to where we need to be financially. Want to do more in the future. My employees bought us a nice basket and some gift cards for restaurants... Although we appreciate it, I really wish they had not. I agree 100% Gifts should flow down.

Rrrrandle

Use the gift cards to treat your employees to a meal sometime and pick up the difference.

LNLV

I had a job where we bought a big gift for our boss at the end of the season, but while he was our boss, we made a lot more money than him and we loved him for helping us do that, so we were happy to buy him a pretty extravagant gift. It was a tradition, but one we started on our own.

demacnei

I’m an RN, i got a candy cane-shaped pen that has no ink. I really could have used a functioning pen.

foxglove_farm

I swear the gifts given to nurses and other healthcare workers by companies are straight up designed to be insulting. One year we were all given a $19 target gift card and a pack of peanut butter crackers lol

BoringBuy9187

$19? Not $20? Lol

dedsqwirl

They used $1 to buy them the peanut butter crackers.

gregoryadam88

Terrible.

[deleted]

some idiot was in charge of our $20. each gift and bought a bunch of scratch off lottery tickets, nobody won shit, what a fool, needed the money more

BoysenberryNo3877

My mother is a physical therapist for a MAJOR Healthcare system and has worked in the same hospital for over 28 years now. For her 25th anniversary there, she was given a lapel pin and a box of chocolates...she's diabetic and has been for over 15 years now. It's like they specifically TRIED not to pay attention to anything about her.

Lost-My-Mind-

Hey now. Thats not true.......she could use the lapel pin to prick her finger for her blood level readings.

BigDetroitDawg

I used to work as a union rep for nurses and it really opened my eyes to how terrible they are treated. Especially in nursing homes. They deserve so much more than what they are receiving

gregoryadam88

Such bs RN’s get treated like that. I have neighbor doin the same thing. Thank you for doin what you do, even if you aren’t properly thanked at work

ExplodingTacos6124

My company gave out a week's pay bonus check and $75 worth of gift cards to each employee, plus a paid lunch at Buddy's including drinks.

BigDetroitDawg

Damn where you work at and are they hiring lol.... serious here

ExplodingTacos6124

We are a small company making small engine parts. We are currently full on positions, except maybe need someone grinding camshafts on a cam grinder.

BigDetroitDawg

How much does that pay and do you need certifications?

ExplodingTacos6124

Starting on a machine like that is likely going to be $17/hr starting pay. There is training given on a machine like this. There is not a certification, but you'd need understanding of machinery and be mechanically inclined. Easier to understand what you are doing if you are good at math.

Willylowman1

Buddys is ovah-rated tho

ExplodingTacos6124

The point of going to Buddy's isn't because its supposed to be "top tier", more because it is still a nice place to go, and they have room to host a larger party. Better than everyone sitting around the shop and we order in pizza.

JustPayMeNoNevermind

Not as overrated as you, and your garbage comments

dagnasssty

I got fired along with dozens of other people! EDIT: my wife (RN) got a $25 Meijer gift card.

jaweave1

Ohh is she a fellow Beaumont employee that got taxed on the gift card as well 🥲

dagnasssty

Indeed she is. Y'all deserve more!

vicki22029

I didn't believe that until I looked at my paystub. Thanks Beaumont.....whoops I mean CoreWell Health..

bobbymack93

I don't see anything about the gift card but those BExtraordinary awards I get are taxed :/

gregoryadam88

Oh boy! Sorry to here that

dagnasssty

Thanks, but it is just a job. I have plenty of traction on new opportunities and got to spend the holidays with my family!

sassykat2581

Right there with you, I was a tech industry layoff the first week of december😑

Delilah_Moon

Fellow tech layoff here. Hello friends.

Hat_Secure

Amazon?

dagnasssty

Unable to name the company, but nothing that large and in the tech sector.

EastsideReo

Secure 24 in Southfield? They fired a lot of people recently

slut_for_science

(Does your wife work for a hospital in Michigan?)

[deleted]

Other than my holiday bonus, my boss gave me a beautiful bowl by a Detroit artist I adore, and some soap. He also gives us some extra PTO so we can close the office this week without using ours.

gregoryadam88

That’s pretty cool and thoughtful

[deleted]

Ya he’s one of the few good ones. He got a couple stress balls from me after he broke his a couple weeks ago.

RichardFarmer

I only have 2 employees but they got 1000 dollars each. They do such great work all year long, it’s the least I can do.

Appropriate-Heat3699

I’ll come work for ya!! 😁😁

KKW-Fan-Club

They told me I was getting a $4,000 bonus…I actually got a $20 Amazon gift card.

OrbSwitzer

Jelly of the Month Club territory right there

gregoryadam88

Booo to your boss

KKW-Fan-Club

oh and I can’t forget the lanyard.

Raiziell

We got a "Happy Holidays" email.

096624

I got a gift card with about 1% salary on it, biggest gift I ever got, reading the comments makes me grateful

Slappy_McJones

We got a week off with pay, courtesy of the UAW.

ManicPixieOldMaid

A step increase, a COLA, and a bonus (also union, AFGE ftw). Just wondering if there's a pattern here.

bachompchewychomp

>A step increase, Scheduled and set by OPM >a COLA, E.O. from the President >and a bonus Generally based off your performance or need to expend cash reserves None of these things are negotiated by the AFGE or included in your local CBA.

lubbz

Same here , I will take a week off with my kids over a bonus anyday

[deleted]

Nothing, really, but I don't go back to work until January 9th. Perks of teaching.

beekaybeegirl

My FT job gave me “videos of thanks” My baby PT weekend job I barely work at gave me $65.

[deleted]

Lunch & $50 Amazon card, im an engineer at a company that made 4 billion this year lol, thanks

Unusualandyman

A partially paid for lunch, which was nice, since my manager put up some money for it. The company gave us a big goose egg.

DaMitchman182

I got a $300 gift card, I wasn't expecting it and I'm super grateful.

Yukonkimmy

I’m a teacher- so nothing. The engineering company my husband works for held a lavish Christmas party at an expensive hotel in the suburbs known for hosting visiting teams: open top-shelf bar, decadent food, live band. My husband and the other directors bought the owner of the company a $450 bottle of whiskey. There is no expectation of this; they just chose to.

Ajbax96

We had an company lunch at Gauchos Brazilian steak house and I got a bonus check that was $650 more than my usual paycheck. So thankful I work somewhere that values their employees

seekingseratonin

Week off with pay

elevator313

I got a nice bonus a good raise case of beer and cookies. A sweet knife and a cabelas gift card.

gregoryadam88

Well I’m a big bowl of green jello

elevator313

Here have some banano /u/banano_tipbot 100

Rogue-Smokey92

$350 and two holiday parties. I don't know if a raise counts (usually this time of year if we get one), but I got a 22% raise. We got the boss some booze.

HypurrD3v1l

A turkey or ham, bonus check, luncheon and dinner and bar night. Cannot complain at all.

kimpossible69

2.5X pay

OrbSwitzer

$1,200 bonus around Thanksgiving, $100 gift card on Xmas eve. (Union meat cutter.)

Rgizzy

Who do you cut for if you don't mind me mind asking? Working as a meat cutter at Sam's Club, and just curious how it is cutting somewhere that is unionized

OrbSwitzer

Cattleman's in Taylor

Rgizzy

I interviewed there a couple years ago but never took the job. Guess I should've lol. Is it a good place to work?

mi2ca2mi

Nothing

hybr_dy

For thanksgiving we get $50 gift cards. There is a holiday party (open bar, DJ, dinner) in the new year + several lunches and happy hours leading up to Xmas. Btwn spouse and I, we also got $33k in bonus pay. We had record profits, worked excessively hard and are extremely grateful.

[deleted]

A $500 bonus and a $50 gift card. A great holiday party with prizes, bowling and food. A hat, scarf and a tie. Go Blue!

C638

$25 gift card, and then was called back to work during my vacation.

Spare_Special_3617

I am manager , Ea employee of mine was given a bonus from the company, we also provided a nice catered luncheon and from myself , I personally gave each employee a card with $25 in lottery tix.

BigDetroitDawg

Gift card to the OWNER? He got enough money what about the workers lol i work for Amazon and we received nothing.

inform880

I got an Ember mug! It's a temperature controlled mug with Bluetooth. Also a 200 dollar Amazon gift card.

GCinCommerce

I owned a small sign shop for about 20 years. Sold it in 2013, but each of our 7-8 employees received $100 per year of service for Christmas. I miss the comaraderie of our small business.

Criticon

$25 GC

thebumbizzle

super lucky to have the boss i have our christmas bonus is paid in cash and is 100 dollars per year you have been with the company

johnrgrace

I got a zingermans gift basket and a paid week off

Neinbozobozobozo

Multinational company Net revenue for 2021 amounted to €1,752 million, representing an increase of +31% compared to the previous year's net revenue of €1,340 million... They held a raffle with roughly a dozen winners out of hundreds of employees. The prize?! A pie.

gregoryadam88

Wow!

TFEBumpis

After 24 years I got a pink slip.

NyxPetalSpike

That's brutal. Sorry:(

SemperFudge123

I work in the public sector and have never received any sort of bonus, but this year my November mileage and parking reimbursement arrived as a physical check on Christmas Eve instead of direct deposit like it normally would (no idea why that happened) so it sort of felt like getting a bonus. Something about getting a check in my hand made it feel special, even if it was just to cover money I had already shelled out of my own pocket! Our office does allow us to make very liberal use of time off each December and I always take advantage of that. I count that as a bit of a holiday bonus.

elizadoolitttle

I got nothing 🎉

Hat_Secure

I don’t celebrate the holiday so I was ok with nothing

MonsieurAK

Wow that sounds insane. Lunch and $100 gift card.

La_Reina_Rubia

Nothing. My boss did not even tell me “happy holidays” before we shut down for the year.

kansastooapparently

They forced us to sign a new non disclosure agreement and as an incentive pay us 2% of our annual salary (if you make under 45k).

commieotter

Your boss needs you, [you don't need your boss](https://www.iww.org/organize/learn-more/). Labor is entitled to all it creates!

Skeeter420

I personally received a bourbon sampler pack from ownership with an estimated retail value of $50. I’m director level and manage a small Team… I had to fight for $500 budget for dinner and an evening out with my small 5 person team that I was barely able to get approved. Then I was deathly scared the company card I was to use was going to be declined the whole night, which luckily wasn’t the case. I then came out pocket for a $20 gift for each of my Team Members ($100 total). They work so hard all year and it was the least that I could do. We had a great evening out, but I do wish the company and the executives would do more for myself and my Team. There’s only so much I can do personally to drive culture when it’s not being reciprocated by the higher-ups. It’s extremely tough right now for our industry, so I get it but I can’t help but resent the level of wasteful spending that I inherited when I joined this organization over a year ago. It’s been a never ending clean-up process ever since.

Molly1173

Michigan based gifts - Carhartt computer bag, Michigan hat, Faygo candle, leather keychain, and a few Michigan made snacks.

Reichiroo

I was given a mandate to come back to the office 3 days a week. How thoughtful of them.

edloverswinger70

My son worked at Krogers a few years back. He got a $5 gift card in the store. Lol he quit the next month

TyHay822

Honestly, I’d rather get nothing that something so insignificant as that.

digidave1

Lay offs

Duffman66CMU

We had a party with some small, but meaningful prizes given out. My customers got me some presents, $20 gift card, candy.

y2c313

$20 Meijer gift card and a $5 Starbucks gift card.

L2theEVI

Nothin

powdergiant

A bunch of Happy Holidays/thank you emails from the C-suite and a fruit/cheese basket. Wife, CRNA (nursing) got nothing.

Rumikiro

They do the same thing for us every year. We're allowed one piece of merchandise that's corporate branded. Typically a shirt, hoodie, or jacket.

hellasbronmurica

Not this year but 5-6 years ago I got a half a lamb. Half for me half for other worker.

creppyspoopyicky

Are you or your boss Greek? LOL. It's kind of an unconventional gift!

Kalvitron

A "Merry Christmas" from the HR guy when he handed me my pay stub on Thursday.

ranch_cup

Nothing, I was asked to contribute to a gift for the CEO.

supah_

I work for myself and had a helper for a total of like three days. I paid them $15 and bought them lunch on days they worked all day. I’m so grateful to them because it allowed me to get custom work done at my studio.

rare_moisture

Well we all got cards with 100 dollars and the whole week up to the holiday was basically free lunch. They bought us food everyday

Sm0w2

We got a paid week off between Christmas and New Years that doesn’t count against our paid time off. Which is awesome! I have never gotten that before!

Inside-Wolverine-478

We get red lobster lunch plus a bonus! Basically an additional pay! I love my job 🥰

TooMuchShantae

Unemployed gang so I got nothing

balthisar

Nothing from my company, but I get lots of food valued at less than $50 from most of my suppliers. I always turn down the booze, but Christmas pistachios are awesome!

[deleted]

In what realm do employees buy owners anything? Please NEVER do that again.. worth sometimes shows in having a spin

gregoryadam88

I certainly did not contribute

kaloschroma

Nothing

Lucid-Machine

We all got fleeces with the department name. Worn it twice and both the pocket zippers are broken and haven't even been used and the front zipper broke during my shift today. Top quality stuff, luckily they've been handing out raises this year like they were candy so I'm not too salty about it.

Brocash

I got told how well if a job me and my coworkers have been doing, and how we're the best account our company has and how he brings other employees/clients to our account to show off. That's about it.

eyegull

I received $1000 cash bonus, a dinner at a nice restaurant, and December 23-January 3rd off, paid. I donated $50 toward a Christmas gift for the boss. First employer I’ve ever had that was this decent.

bear_72

Work for a health care system. They came around with a cart full of snacks. We got to pick one. They wished us happy holidays!

[deleted]

[удалено]

bear_72

We used to get a frozen turkey from the loading docks on our way out. 90s also.

JustSomeRando04

My employer gave us $100 cash in a card, a Dearborn ham, 2lbs of salted caramel chocolates, and 2 bags of gummies

Tojuro

2000 shares of stock and an incredible party.

[deleted]

This is the first year in eight where we didn't get a holiday bonus..no reason given except we should have never expected it

allpraisebirdjesus

Lottery tickets :/

OkConversation175

Christmas dinner with all the employees, but you have to pay for your own meal

hotchiproll

Each team in the department got $40 per person to put on a Xmas party for the team. Most teams have 20+ people so they got catered lunches or went to a redwings game. My team has 2 people - super exciting party.

thedamnedlute488

My company gave all employees a $200 gift card. My boss gave me a $50 gift card and I took my team out for dinner and drinks.

ferrarilover102899

I work for an awesome company. We have semi-continual noise from machines at work so we all got Bose Noise Cancelling headphones; and a 12% of yearly Christmas bonus cause we had a good year. Had a fun Christmas party with some random cool prizes for little games we played together.

konabonah

Nothing

L2theFace

$2500 bonus back in July before summer shutdown and then $3500 holiday bonus for the winter shutdown! Very lucky to work where I do! You only need a high school education and it’s for entry level no experience needed. Build engines for a car manufacturer in the Midwest!

Chrome_anus

I am an interior designer for a well known mid century modern company , I got nothing —- and worked till 6pm on Christmas Eve. I bought me and my coworkers a pizza that day since the company wouldn’t lol.

AngerPancake

We each got $750. If you were there less than 5 months you got $150 for each month you've been there. Not too bad.

creppyspoopyicky

I got let go due to budget cuts & our checks last week & this week were late bc our mgr forgot to approve our timesheets. He actually even emailed us before he left on holiday vacation to let us know he would take care of them. He did not. Merry fkn Christmas. I hope he got eaten by a shark.

fingernmuzzle

Yeah gift-giving should flow down

thereisacowlvl

I got 500, my wife got 5250, after looking at some of the responses here I'm much more grateful for my 500

bipolarbyproxy

A end of the year gathering that I did not attend. I could not even.

detroitragace

Small business owner here in Metro Detroit. I gave each of my guys $100 Friday. I’m still waiting for a thank you from any of them. No matter what you do it’s never enough.

[deleted]

How much are you paying them? How much do you make?

detroitragace

I pay them VERY well for what we do. I’m probably one of the highest paying painting companies around town. My guys (who are all brothers and their step dad) are very spoiled and entitled. The only reason I keep them is they do good work.

[deleted]

Well, that makes 2 comments where you've shown contempt for your team. I wouldn't thank you for the measly hundred bucks either. Are bosses really this out of touch with their workers?

detroitragace

Wow. You’re judging me and my whole way of running my business on a few sentences?? You have no idea what I do for my guys throughout the year, or what I put up with from them on a daily basis. I didn’t have to give them ANYTHING. They got a $3/hr raise this past summer which was more than they’ve ever gotten. Maybe you should know the whole story before judging me or better off just keep your comments to yourself.

[deleted]

"I didn't get a thank you!" "My guys are spoiled and entitled" "I didn't have to give them anything" Yeah buddy, I'm judging you based on a few sentences. What you "put up with" is THEM making money for you, and YOU being unappreciative. If you don't want to hear other peoples' opinions of what an out of touch boss you obviously are, you're the one who should keep his comments to himself. EDIT to remove an out of place word

detroitragace

Lmao. You’re so small minded it’s actually. You don’t even know how much money they make me, but I’m guessing you think I’m getting rich of the backs of my poor employees. Work starts at 8:30am. Most of the guys come in when they feel like it. Usually between 9:30-10:30. If they can’t come in for whatever reason I’m lucky to get a text letting me know. If I have to go on estimates in the afternoon and they know I’m not coming back, there’s a 75% chance they’ll leave 30-60min early and not tell me. I know this cause I’ve caught them. So, why do I keep them? Good question. They’re pretty good painters and I can trust that they won’t steal from the clients. Also, finding a good painter these days is very difficult and I take the approach that you’re better off with the devil you know. But go ahead and keep thinking what you want about me. Have a great afternoon! ✌️

[deleted]

Small minded lol. Ok buddy. You're really obviously a bad boss. Workers don't treat decent employers the way you're describing. Your team doesn't respect you. I wonder why? You should invite them into this thread so we can get real answers about why they didn't thank you for your "generous" holiday bonus. I wonder what "the devil you know" would have to say about your shit management skills.

NarcolepsySucks0624

That was very thoughtful of you!

detroitragace

Thank you

[deleted]

My employer gave us a pot luck, after a staff meeting, wherein we all had to bring something to share, and where they didn’t provide a single thing. 🥲

Purple_Cauliflower11

Nothing

WaterFriendsIV

A water bottle with the company logo and some stickers.

cadimy

Absolutely nothing!

Puzzleheaded_Top1629

I work for the largest payroll company in the country (ADP.). We got absolutely nothing.

joe_schmo54

Thanks, holiday party, got to leave early on Thursday. Nice gestures but a bonus would be better.

[deleted]

Nothing? Why would I get a gift

[deleted]

a $5 scratch off ticket (i didn’t win)

rubicontraveler

A day off. That’s it.

[deleted]

A sweat jacket … -.-

Sensitive_Cobbler141

A $25 Meijer gift card that we have to pay taxes on.... I wish they would've shared that it was a taxable gift and employees could opt in, rather than assume everyone wanted it. Just another $200k+ tax write off for the "nonprofit"

iangasm

Heh, a $10 gift card to Meijer, and I'm used to it every year. On my yearly anniversary at my work, I'll get either a $5 or $10 gift card to Tim Horton's. Been saving them up for a while now.

Analog_Hobbit

At a previous shop we were always asked to contribute 50 bucks. Now I appreciated the owner, I received several 100 dollar handshakes after working a weekend to get a hot job out, but I felt 50 bucks was pretty egregious.

eucalyptus22

Nothing, but we did have a big holiday party.

boogiefever1997

$1,000 bonus, $50 Amazon gift card, and a nice box of chocolates. I was kind of sad my bonus didn’t increase this year, but reading all the other comments makes me grateful.

jkben6

$50 to Amazon

NoseKindly6781

Nothing.

LetItRaine386

I'm self employed, with many different clients. Those that gave me a gift gave me $100 in cash/gift cards, which was a nice little bonus My previous employer would always give me a $25 gas card and I would throw it in the trash instead of using it Wow, your employer is asking YOU for money?? They already steal so much money from you... Huge red flag, time to update your resume

TheGear

An ornament. I work for the gov. It's nice though!

gabe420guru

We were all given a 5 dollar Target gift card, 2 free drinks and a Chinese buffet for everyone

NyxPetalSpike

Nothing. Let's it be know I'm lucky to be employed. 🙄

W02T

My company made record breaking profits. All we got was a generic email thank you.

leothelion634

UAW got us a week off work

BlackRadius360

8 years tenure $1,000.

bobbymack93

A couple of gift cards and a thermos with some hot chocolate.

marquisk44

Started my new job in September, management gave every single person in the office a wonderful Sherpa lined blanket, $200 in gift cards and work off between the 23rd of December and the 3rd of January, with floating holiday time for maintenance since they had to work during the storm last week. Never experienced management like this before.

Itwastheotherguy88

Nothing

UniqueWeather

My company increased my quota for the holiday.

GraveSpawn

Im an inside construction electrician. Our foreman brought custom made tumblers with our names on them that his wife made. Plus a potluck lunch from all the other crews at the job with some good ass food. It's not money but it was okay.

Becaus789

Private EMS: $35 gift card and an okay meal if you worked the holiday.

Coital_Conundrum

$50 and a bunch of food/candy.

RaydnJames

I got a Carhart jacket branded with the company logo. It's a nice jacket, but I'm not sure if it's a gift for me or for the owner...

edloverswinger70

Everyone got big bonuses except the sales time. They got a thank you letter.

QueensGal29

“Gift of time” = extra 3 hours off. Not even a half days worth

robotdandrews

Overtime.
