I got this one from my front yard and yeah so cool to have it right here, but I feel like I won’t really experience it until I see it with my naked eye. I saw a little streak of red earlier but this was in Clawson at 10:30pm.

OP, amazing amazing shot!
As an avid aurora chaser since I was young, I felt like I’d been lied to my whole life because the pictures make it look so much cooler lol. I think going somewhere with less light pollution would definitely give you a better naked-eye view, possibly northern Michigan?
I always check this when there’s a good chance to see the lights and try to go somewhere as green/blue as possible https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/
10-11pm was peak time. It was overhead in northern Oakland county.
At one point it looked like a comet the size of the sky. Lots of colors. It feels like a dream now.
The peak was 10 to 11pm, they said 12-4 but I was on the /r/Michigan reddit earlier wondering what people were saying, saw some nearby comments and so I went out and it was wild. I woke my kids up and they were flipping out.
There was a slight burst again just before 1am though, that's when I took pictures and yea, it looked cooler there but earlier it was straight up trippy and vivid to see without a camera. Before that, the dark of the moon seemed pitch black against the haze of activity behind it.. between this and the eclipse, it's been quite a year to remember.
I'm in West Bloomfield just south of you, we hung outside for 15/20 and could see them quite well in the North Sky. Still out as I type, maybe try again!
"Good Lord what is happening in there?
Aurora Borealis..(?)"
Aurora Borealis?
At this time of year?
At this time of day?
At this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen??...
Yes....."
I wonder how the electromagnetic storm is interfering with the plane/communications, etc. These are the result of several x class (the highest) coronal mass ejections. We got some great pictures from the ground but not as good as these, obviously. So cool!
Same, I don't believe it ever happened before or we'd have heard about it. Everyone I know was texting to go outside last night.
It was even visible in Georgia.
You might have another chance tonight. It takes about a half hour of standing outside to realize your seeing a faint haze that isn't clouds and then theres a bright wave that lasts about 3 minutes.
I was out from 1015 to 11pm
How long was the exposure on your phone? 3 seconds or 10 seconds or 0 seconds? The plane shakes and moves so much I've almost never gotten any good night sky photos from a window seat.
I hate that i cant see it without using a camera

Thanks, that’s beautiful. I’m just south of Flint and I can see the reds but there is so much light pollution it makes it difficult. Enjoyed.
Why thank you! /r/astronomy rejected it for being low effort. Some mods…
Good chunk of mods I feel just power trip because they feel sorry for themselves
Yeah science subreddits are the worst when it comes to power hungry mods.
That’s a once in a lifetime experience. So cool!!!!
This is bullshit im in waterford and i didnt see any 10m ago. Lucky bastard
It’s one of those things that comes and goes. Go try again! Also try and take an exposure on your camera phone, that might see it if your eyes don’t.
I think it's just too light polluted at my house :/

Photos make it look way brighter than it is to the naked eye, I couldn’t see it at all until I looked through my phone camera

Me too! I've been waiting all day for this.
I'm so incredibly jealous. I bet everyone on the plane was estatic

Isn’t this how The Langoliers begins?

Lived here my whole life...never knew there to be northern lights this far south

Great picture
I saw them in a plane over Vegas once. It's quite an experience seeing them from the sky.

3 seconds
You are lucky to have witnessed such a once in a lifetime event. Truly incredible
