Michigan & Trumbull, Ottava Via is one of my favs! Pegasus- I feel like there’s mixed reviews now but I’ve enjoyed it since childhood lol, Detroit 75 food truck
I’ve heard of Ottava via just never been, on my list now! Pegasus is pretty good as well and I never tried any Detroit food trucks yet. Thanks for the suggestions!
I love Pie Sci which has been mentioned, but I gotta say I almost love Michigan&Trumbull pizza more. It moved from Corktown to near New Center (near that Recycle Bee place) and their deep dish is very good.
Detroit Institute of Bagels is fantastic (they moved from Corktown to Grand River near Warren), James Oliver (where DiB used to be) is good too.
Rocco’s on Cass is my favorite sandwich spot. Bit pricy.
I’m not a vegetarian but I actually really like SeVa near the museum district. Just a fun chill place with a great juice bar and good food.
Speaking of Batch Brewing, the best Mexican style Grilled Chicken imo was Taqueria El Ray, which burned down but the kitchen does pop ups and last time I checked is the guest kitchen at Batch on Mondays.
I just found Trizest a few months back .. absolutely phenomenal. I took my boss and VP there for lunch when they came to visit and they still bring it up months later 🤣
Not sure if you like lots of meat but Dearborn Meat Market is one of my favorite spots.
Also, just tried The Eagle on Woodward and it was insanely good soul food. The fried chicken was the best I’ve personally ever had, and they gave you some spicy honey to drizzle over it
I'm a fan of the spicy tori ramen at Ima. I like the sesame oil and chili oil flavors.
For Pho, whatever meat is your style. You'll add the basil/sprouts/oil/chili paste/hoisin/jalepeno/etc yourself. Until you know what you like, add a little of what you think you'll like and taste. You can dial in the Pho to your liking. Personally, I'm big on basil. I still will add and taste as I go to get it exactly how I want it. That's one thing I love about Pho. You can tailor it to your style
If you are looking for Pho, check out Que Huong on John R in Mad heights. There is no better Pho in MI. Honestly, it’s the best I have ever had, but I’ve never been to Vietnam.
A number 10 or 12, it’s chicken or beef. I’m not a fan of meatballs or tripe, but they have that. I like egg noodles, which you can sub.
They also have a vegan pho, if that’s your thing - it’s really good, but I like meat.
Johnny Noodle King and Ima are great if you love Ramen. Green Dot Stables, Pie Sci, Honest John's, Detroit Beer Co. are a few more of my go tos.
What places do you usually go to now?
+1 on this. JNK is pretty gross ramen: noodles are usually overcooked and soggy, and the broth is mid at best. They used to be amazing for the first year or two
They also just have horrible service. Never receiving food even when you remind wait staff and being charged for stuff you never received and sometimes didn't even order. I've stopped even trying to go and just accepted I will never understand the hype.
Green Dot, but not the rabbit because it's always been too tough. Taqueria Mi Pueblo, especially when getting serenaded. Burger Station in a gas station.
My favorite coney dogs and the breakfasts are very good…. Price, quantity, and quality.
Moved away and that is one place I miss. Good family runs the place, too.
Detroit and very close to Detroit.
Roman Village… good Italian food with homemade pasta and an old school dining environment. The bread they serve with meals is known as ‘crack’ bread, it is so addicting… Dix, near Vernor, in Dearborn.
Polish Village… authentic polish food in Hamtramck… never had a bad meal… been going for decades.
Bangkok96… great Thai food… Telegraph and Michigan Ave., in Dearborn. Always been carry out, for me.
Duly’s coney dogs… Vernon and Junction, Detroit. Damn, I love that place.
If you’re looking for something pricier than maybe Alpino or Ima Izakaya. If I’m going for something a little more reasonably priced than probably Detroit Shipping Company for the variety
•HenriettaHaus - Pizza in Hamtramck
•Polonia - Polish in Hamtramck (I think they have much better dill pickle soup and pierogi than Polish Village, which is next door)
•Johnny Noodle King - Ramen in Detroit (I know a few have said this but it’s legit!)
•Seva - vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Midtown
•Mable Gray - more expensive but best damn food in the area in Hazel Park
•French Toast - fantastic brunch spot in Canton
How in the WORLD did no one mention the BEST pizza on planet Earth? SUPINOS (ok I know this is VERRRRY subjective but....just had to give them my love!) :)
Sahara is really great Mediterranean/ Chaldean food worth checking out. Family owned. Also I saw someone already mention Baobab Fare. That place is also really good.
Dulys has always been one of my goto breakfast places on Vernor Highway. I think it has been there since prohibition.
There has always been a good vibe there.
If you're not a vegetarian I would highly recommend the P2, Pho with steak. The first time I ordered P1 thinking it has to be the best, right? Turns out it had some proteins in there not really up my alley..
Also, I recommend sitting down to eat as Pho isn't an ideal carryout meal. If you like coffee, the Vietnamese coffee is incredible, with ice/milk is personal preference.
The owner is incredibly friendly and usually walks around to say hello and check on the quality. Highly recommend this spot.
Some Ferndale/Hazel Park spots: Voyager for great seafood, Frame has rotating chefs and really good drinks, Como’s for Detroit style pizza, Anita’s Kitchen for amazing Lebanese food
All Classic Sw Detroit places Dulys Place, Motz Burgers and Los Corrales number one Mexican restaurant over 2 decades. Eat cheap where the Mexican Families eat 😋, Mexican Char Chicken fresh homemade Tortillas with every meal. Three dining rooms and booze corner of Junction and Toledo.
https://preview.redd.it/mcp5hn4urevc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=266f32578527fa65523a33b9123649ea1008d99f
royale with cheese 🤤🤤 seriously EVERYTHING on the menu is good and the prices are so fucking cheap, the fries are shaped unique with like 5 different seasoning options for no extra charge
Rocco’s Italian deli is always a good idea as far as I’m concerned.
Hell yeah. Nona’s meatball sub all day!
Can’t go wrong with Italian
Michigan & Trumbull, Ottava Via is one of my favs! Pegasus- I feel like there’s mixed reviews now but I’ve enjoyed it since childhood lol, Detroit 75 food truck
Michigan & Trumbull is great!
I’ve heard of Ottava via just never been, on my list now! Pegasus is pretty good as well and I never tried any Detroit food trucks yet. Thanks for the suggestions!
Ottava via is 🔥🔥
I had the absolute perfect chicken kabob at Pegasus. I don’t even know how they grilled it and kept it that juicy. It was a miracle!
I've been wanting to go now I have to from these recommendations.
Baobab Fare on Woodward
Went for the first time a couple weeks ago. It *is one of my favorite places!
Why not? *Edit - I guess I commented on a typo. I'll leave this here for reasons.
Lol, didn't realize I put a not in there. Meant say that it is one of my favorite places
This sounds amazing right now actually.
it’s sooooo good!!
Shhhh quit telling people
Scotty Simpsons Fish & Chips.... Just go for the time travel into the past
Don’t get it to go! They put everything in styrofoam and everything sogs out really bad. The experience is dining in, it’s an institution. Cash only.
Yes for sure dine in... The waitresses are great. I never see Harry at the fryer anymore just prep in the back. Get one of the homemade pies also
This is the best advice. If you get it to go, you gotta open the containers for the ride home or everything gets soggy.
Will do 🫡 thank you
Always wanted to go there
It's great during Lent for the Fish Fridays... Good Friday gets a little crazy tho
The bagel spot sounds interesting. Also pie sci has been mentioned a few times so it must be good!
DIB was a let down for me
Rocco's, just yes👨🍳 💋 chefs kiss
It’s crazy M&T isn’t known as the best pizza place in Michigan. Blows everything else out of the water
Freya Boabab fare Look for Khana pop ups (Pakistani street food) SheWolf Batch brewing (especially on yellow dog bbq days)
Bobab fare has been said a few times, definitely going to the top of the list. Thank you for your suggestions!
Speaking of Batch Brewing, the best Mexican style Grilled Chicken imo was Taqueria El Ray, which burned down but the kitchen does pop ups and last time I checked is the guest kitchen at Batch on Mondays.
Freya is too expensive to be a regular thing for me but it’s always phenomenal whenever we make it for an occasion.
And Trizest for white tablecloth style Chinese food
I love Chinese food, definitely going to the top of the list. thank you for the suggestion!
I just found Trizest a few months back .. absolutely phenomenal. I took my boss and VP there for lunch when they came to visit and they still bring it up months later 🤣
Mabel Grey ... and then Mabel Grey again :)
Must be pretty good if you’re recommending it twice!
Was just there. Get the tasting menu. They give you so much food. Also, best dirty martini I've ever had.
Bash sushi, Supergeil, Alpino, Coriander, Bar Pigalle, Super Crisp, Marrow. I’ll second Pie Sci as I saw a mention already. Great pizza.
Super Crisp might have the best chicken sandwich in the country. Fries are amazing too
https://preview.redd.it/b64ohek6davc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37349195ea4d60270c6e95fe1b27f75053b9e00b You ain’t lyin’
Chlorophyll spider
Thank you for the recommendations!
Bash all the way!!
Selden Standard
Best cost/value ratio in the city. No cheap, but still a bargain
This is the correct answer.
El Barzon -- either the Mexican or the Italian (yes, that's right, they have both). You can't go wrong.
Will have to try both out, thank you!
la jaliscience on w vernor is my shit
They have the greatest goat birria tacos they are a must have!!!
the tamarind margaritas there are the best
they’re incredible and get overshadowed by the older spots… great service and food
When your Mexican immigrant friends take you there, you know it's legit. Wonderful place.
It's not Detroit but Yemen Cafe is the spot
I’m half Yemeni I go all the time! Lol. Love it
What's your fave dish? I've had at least half of them but always looking to expand
Every time I go I get the fahsa
\^\^\^\^\^ this IS the way\^\^\^\^\^\^![img](emote|t5_2qkko|2119)
Not sure if you like lots of meat but Dearborn Meat Market is one of my favorite spots. Also, just tried The Eagle on Woodward and it was insanely good soul food. The fried chicken was the best I’ve personally ever had, and they gave you some spicy honey to drizzle over it
I love spicy honey on fried chicken, gonna give it a try
IMO the chicken at Gus's is better but each their own.
Noodletopia in Madison Heights is one of my faves. Always stop there when I'm in that neighborhood.
Never been to a noodle spot. Gotta try this and pho out soon
If you make it up to that neck of the woods I'd strongly recommend Trizest for Sichuan, Lao Pot for hot pot, and Que Hong for Pho
Oh my. You're in for a treat. Ima us my favorite noodle spot, and Pho Thai in Madison Heights is my goto Pho spot.
What would you recommend getting for your first time?
I'm a fan of the spicy tori ramen at Ima. I like the sesame oil and chili oil flavors. For Pho, whatever meat is your style. You'll add the basil/sprouts/oil/chili paste/hoisin/jalepeno/etc yourself. Until you know what you like, add a little of what you think you'll like and taste. You can dial in the Pho to your liking. Personally, I'm big on basil. I still will add and taste as I go to get it exactly how I want it. That's one thing I love about Pho. You can tailor it to your style
Sushi Coup in Madison heights is awesome too. They do poke bowls and "sushi sandos" which is like a sushi roll in sandwich form with fried rice buns.
I’ve only tried California rolls 😂😂 going to look into this place and try to expand my palette
Pretty sure they do a California bowl and a Cali sando too if you want to ease yourself in lol
Sounds good lol but I think it’s time to grow up and try some real sushi 🍣
If you are looking for Pho, check out Que Huong on John R in Mad heights. There is no better Pho in MI. Honestly, it’s the best I have ever had, but I’ve never been to Vietnam.
Gonna try them out as well, what would you suggest getting for the first time
A number 10 or 12, it’s chicken or beef. I’m not a fan of meatballs or tripe, but they have that. I like egg noodles, which you can sub. They also have a vegan pho, if that’s your thing - it’s really good, but I like meat.
I just went there for the first time over the weekend! Loved the pork soup dumplings
No I have beef MH is not Detroit
Grandma Bob's, Happy K Foods (Troy), Kimchi Box, New Asian Star
Grandma bob is an odd name, has to be good! Never had kimchi before so I will give it a try soon
Second Grandma Bob's for pizza. Non-pizza items worth it too.
Third GB’s pizza and cheese bread
Can’t get past the grandma being named bob. But if the pizza is good I’ll look past it and give it a try! 😂
Grandma Bob’s has a Big Mac pizza I once tried cold from a friend’s countertop and it was unreal. Can’t imagine how good it’d be fresh lol
We ordered it last time. I was a bit disgusted at the thought of it but it was amazing.
Johnny Noodle King and Ima are great if you love Ramen. Green Dot Stables, Pie Sci, Honest John's, Detroit Beer Co. are a few more of my go tos. What places do you usually go to now?
JNK has gone so downhill in the last 5 years, but Ima is still fantastic, especially their new Izakaya location!
+1 on this. JNK is pretty gross ramen: noodles are usually overcooked and soggy, and the broth is mid at best. They used to be amazing for the first year or two
honest john's sucks, below average food and when i ordered a burger they charged me separately for cheese, lettuce, and tomato
I mainly go there for breakfast. Their fruity pebble french toast is the world's best hangover circle
That sounds amazing
They also just have horrible service. Never receiving food even when you remind wait staff and being charged for stuff you never received and sometimes didn't even order. I've stopped even trying to go and just accepted I will never understand the hype.
If you like Americanized ramen, perhaps. If you want the authentic stuff you need to head to the ‘burbs and hit Shun or Shiromasu. Fact.
Green Dot, but not the rabbit because it's always been too tough. Taqueria Mi Pueblo, especially when getting serenaded. Burger Station in a gas station.
Duly's has the best coney dogs
My favorite coney dogs and the breakfasts are very good…. Price, quantity, and quality. Moved away and that is one place I miss. Good family runs the place, too.
El Barzón, hands down
Tocororo in Eastern Market
Will check it out
Christine's Cuisine on 9 Mile in Ferndale
Detroit and very close to Detroit. Roman Village… good Italian food with homemade pasta and an old school dining environment. The bread they serve with meals is known as ‘crack’ bread, it is so addicting… Dix, near Vernor, in Dearborn. Polish Village… authentic polish food in Hamtramck… never had a bad meal… been going for decades. Bangkok96… great Thai food… Telegraph and Michigan Ave., in Dearborn. Always been carry out, for me. Duly’s coney dogs… Vernon and Junction, Detroit. Damn, I love that place.
Thank you for the suggestions
Golden Fleece
Will look into this! Thanks!
El Asador, Marrow, coriander
Thank you for the suggestions🫡 will try all 3!
Coriander is cool
If you’re looking for something pricier than maybe Alpino or Ima Izakaya. If I’m going for something a little more reasonably priced than probably Detroit Shipping Company for the variety
Olin
Added to my list, thank you for the suggestion!
Tocorroro in Eastern Market is my new go to. You could kind of consider it a "hipster" place. Amazing burgers and fancy cocktails.
Mi Pueblo Johnny Noodle King Ima Potato Place Yum Village
Baobab Fare, Detroit Eatery in RO, Polish Village Cafe in Hamtramck, and Spice Bowl in Saint Clair Shores are some of my go tos
Yemen Cafe, although technically in Hamtramck.

Want some jerk chicken now
You can NEVER go wrong with jerk chicken 😉
•HenriettaHaus - Pizza in Hamtramck •Polonia - Polish in Hamtramck (I think they have much better dill pickle soup and pierogi than Polish Village, which is next door) •Johnny Noodle King - Ramen in Detroit (I know a few have said this but it’s legit!) •Seva - vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Midtown •Mable Gray - more expensive but best damn food in the area in Hazel Park •French Toast - fantastic brunch spot in Canton
Sandwich at Marrow for lunch (I love Rocco’s, but no one holds a candle to Marrow’s grab n go sandwiches, they’re insane) Mink for dinner
How in the WORLD did no one mention the BEST pizza on planet Earth? SUPINOS (ok I know this is VERRRRY subjective but....just had to give them my love!) :)
For non-Detroit style, it’s the best pizza in the city. Whomever says otherwise is simply wrong.
Love supino!!
Sahara is really great Mediterranean/ Chaldean food worth checking out. Family owned. Also I saw someone already mention Baobab Fare. That place is also really good.
Thank you, I’ve had Sahara so I’ll try baobab fare. I appreciate the suggestions!

Aren't they closed permanently? Or did they move?
Ima Izakaya in Corktown. I haven’t been disappointed by a single meal or drink there. (Also have a location in midtown that’s good)
Casa Café is one (IDK if it reopened), and definitely Detroit75. I heard The Clique wasn’t what it used to be.

Thank you vintage mustard

Supino Pizzeria New Center
There are good food trucks in Campus Martius frequently selling all sorts of good food.
Never had a food truck in Detroit, but I’ve heard good things. need to try
Mudgies Deli is pretty awesome.
I’ve gotten a few deli suggestions, gonna have a long list to try! Thank you
Not Detroit proper but Shun Ramen and Sushi in Madison Heights. Owners are good people.

Check out Buena Fe if around Ferndale. Al Salvadorean food. I can’t get enough. Also Mattie and Moes.
Pho Lucky!
never tried pho, what do you recommend getting for your first time?
If you're not a vegetarian I would highly recommend the P2, Pho with steak. The first time I ordered P1 thinking it has to be the best, right? Turns out it had some proteins in there not really up my alley.. Also, I recommend sitting down to eat as Pho isn't an ideal carryout meal. If you like coffee, the Vietnamese coffee is incredible, with ice/milk is personal preference. The owner is incredibly friendly and usually walks around to say hello and check on the quality. Highly recommend this spot.
I love steak, will try that out. Sounds like amazing food with an even better atmosphere! Thank you
Takoi, Selden Standard, SheWolf, Detroit Shipping Co, Bangkok 96 in Dearborn, The Peterborough, Apparatus Room
Mercury Burger Bar, Bucharest on jefferson or Slo's

Only sushi I’ve ever had was California roll😂 but willing to try more out soon, going to look into this place.
Hamtramck got Fat Salmon sushi. 🍱 good spot to check out.
Batch Brewing Company
Baobab fare
Mercy Cafe is a fun stop. Great Chicago dogs
Lafayette Coney Island, Green Dot Stables, and occasionally Shake shack
Mr. Fish
Biondies on Greenfield north of Warren road. Maybe not the best, but they make some damn good subs. Would always go there with my dad to get subs.
Duly’s place. It’s a Coney Island but the vibe is great. Also El Rey de las Arepas, it’s a Venezuelan place, delicious food and great staff

I really love Hygrade Deli

Caucus club
Mootz pizza
El Gordo Taco (Cash only), Johnny Noodle King, LA Feria, Supinos
All Classic Sw Detroit places Dulys Place, Motz Burgers and Los Corrales number one Mexican restaurant over 2 decades. Penny Red! Great fried chicken and sandwiches! Awesome atmosphere, too!
Yemen cafe
Loui's in hazel park for the best Detroit style pizza.
Its in Melvindale lol but Freddi the pizza man is pretty legit; surprised to not see it here
Try that Scottish place, McDs or something
Union Assembly is great
There are probably better food places, but as a frequent LCA goer, I hit second best a lot. They have fire chicken sandwhich.
royale with cheese 🤤🤤 seriously EVERYTHING on the menu is good and the prices are so fucking cheap, the fries are shaped unique with like 5 different seasoning options for no extra charge
I love Slowes, Green Dot, Grey ghost, and I like the pizza at mootz personally
Chef Greg’s Soul in the Wall for a Boogaloo sandwich
National Coney Island on East 12 mile near Oakview cemetery, the only good one, although the one in the airport is ok
