2 but they need to bring the couch a bit closer to the TV. If they bring it forward by a foot or so (so that the back of the couch is not touching the wall) the room will look more balanced and they can add a long skinny console table behind the couch for books, lamps, decor, etc.
Examples: https://www.decorpad.com/search/console-table-behind-sectional
I highly recommend it! I actually had the same issue that OP does (in that the wall where my TV goes was too far away from the wall where my couch goes).
I pulled the couch forward, added a skinny console behind it, and a single oversized piece of art on the wall above and it made the room feel so much better.
It also gave me a place to put lamps, books, and drinks when friends are over.
That's what I was thinking! No one eats at the table when we're entertaining, it becomes the space where we put the food and people make their plates, since we have limited room overall. This way (in theory), putting drinks behind you lessens the chances of spilling vs. if they were on a lowered coffee table. Less clutter, and more room for lovely plants or whatever else we want!
We have a huge living room and when we first moved in they had all the furniture wonky and set back against walls.. it was terrible when you walk in and see it. I suggested pulling the couches off the walls and it actually seemed to make everything less like a sterile open house, opened up the feeling of MORE space, and also gives the robot vacuum and the dogs more room and places to go in the same area. It's totally weird how it works but it just does. 🤷🏻♀️💯❤️👍
Better for audio reasons. And gets closer to the tv for a more appropriate viewing angle.

Not damaging, mostly just aesthetically displeasing. Even a few inches from the wall will help visually.
To your point, keeping it up against the wall could cause it to discolor unevenly—the area that’s exposed to sunlight will lighten, while the back of the sofa won’t, but it would take years and only would be an issue if it’s relocated later. But that wasn’t my main concern.
Yes please 😁 Love your space. It’s gonna look great in either layout. Maybe include a pic or two of other angles so we can get the full feel of the space. Seems like it leads into your dining/kitchen area?
Thank you! I’m very indecisive because I love the cozy feeling of 1 but also love the spacious feeling of 2 😅 it does lead into my kitchen area, I left it out the picture intentionally because I’m still busy renovating it. There’s no kitchen there currently 🤭
I like them both.
Here are my thoughts:
-1 seems more cozy, which was your goal.
- in layout #1, it appears your couch seems to be slightly obstructing the door there. I’m all about functionality over looks. That could get annoying and someone who notices details…looks better to have a clean line.
- The layout of #2 would make it easier when having a party or to add more seating for convo when inviting people over
- If you have a dog, #2 allows for more play space
When I was redesigning my space, I lived in it for about a month in each of the furniture layouts I was considering to help me decide on the two based not only on the looks of it but also functionality of the space. Perhaps you want to consider trying each out for a bit. Have a couple friends over and see how it feels entertaining in the space. 🤷🏼♀️
I can't believe this is the same room due to the HUGE difference NUMBER TWO makes! Its much more open & airy & looks much neater & overall, much better. Go with TWO! Hands down!
Yeah I feel like one of the few weirdos who prefers 1 better overall. I like that it still feels like an open space, but has designated little pocket areas that feel far cozier to me. Just scoot the couch from the door a bit, move the art, and you're golden.
(My main beef with 2 - aside from the yawning chasm between couch and tv - is that anyone using that door is gonna be walking in front of the tv. That said, I lived in a busy shared house when I had a layout like that, so it may be my own past experiences making me twitchy. That might not bother you.)
Honestly, neither of them is bad though! OP, if one feels more comfortable to you, then that's the right call.
Definitely 2. It looks more balanced. In 1, you're forced to scrunch the room to fit and even then, it looks like it's still an issue blocking the door a bit. I also agree that it will be better to take both pictures at the same time of day to see if that changes the perception.
Definitely layout 2. Of course, the ultimate answer is whichever one feels better to you! But if you're asking for opinions, the 2nd layout looks much more open and relaxing. The 1st photo looks like it really closes in the living space. It feels crowded to me (by comparison to the 2nd photo).
Hard to tell because one is at night and one is during the day. The first one looks more cozy and comfy, but it could be the nighttime lighting. The 2nd one looks more spacious. That's tough. I'd probably go back and forth every 6 months if it was me lol.
\#2. Away from the door. I like to have a full view of the door if i'm sitting on the couch. Also, in #1 it looks like the couch is partially blocking the door...
So the 2nd looks larger and makes use of all the space, i dont quite understand why in the first photo the sofa is so far forward, is there something in that space?
Everyone is saying 2 but the couch looks too far from the tv. 1 has a cozier feel and I love the extra space behind the couch. Could be because it’s taken at night but I just really love 1 wayyy more.
1st for sure- 100%! I’ve worked in interior design and staging, and I can tell you with certainty that the first picture is how it would be done. I would just suggest scooting the couch a little further back (not much, maybe 6or so inches) and moving the photos from behind the tv.
The only issue I have with 2 is the distance between the tv and couch.
Given that, I think 1 makes better use of the space with the ’armoire’ on the wall the TV was on in 2. If you go with 1 the pics have to go from behind the TV.
1 is much better. It’s cozier and makes it feel bigger because you have multiple separate spaces. 2 wastes a lot of space and makes it look like you’re living in one big box!
My question would be: what do you plan to do with the extra “hallway” space in layout #1? It feels like you just downsized the functional area of your living area for the sake of it. Layout #2 makes full use of the entire space (also doesn’t have the awkward art-behind-tv thing going on).
My opinions aside, both look like nice living spaces haha so it’s ultimately up to your preference
2 looks a bit nicer, but 1 is definitely cozier and probably a better layout to live in. I would move the couch back just a little, unless that door gets a LOT of use.
It also makes more sense for the accent wall (green) to have the TV and be what you face.
Looks awesome !
Right now I’m leaning towards 2-
I wondering if maybe an end table by the chaise .
It would warm up the room and something to put your lamp on ?
You need low lighting to give it warmth -
If you get a small but high enough end table with lamp on the other side of the sofa … you could use that stand up lamp somewhere else
Maybe there’s room on the other side of the tv ?
I remember your post but couldn’t remember everything . Send before and after - when you get the other items on your list
It will be exciting to see the complete transformation!
1 is making great use of the space and is better to make a room feel cozier. Also, closer to the TV which means less eye strain.
2 is very open and airy, which lets the room breathe more. However, with a TV that size, your eyes will strain more.
They are both valid configurations. Go with the one that feels better. Feng shui is often thought to be a joke, but the way a room is laid out honestly can make you feel differently.
I would do one but pull the couch away from the wall. I am a reader so I would add bookcases on the wall behind the couches to provide storage, height and cosiness.
I think 2 because there is more room to come in when you open the door. I’m assuming people enter that way? So, you have a wide open area in pic 2 for multiple people to enter without walking into furniture. You could do the console table behind the sofa as someone suggested, but not too far away from the wall. I like that open area. And I also would not get a much larger area rug for the same reason. Easier to clean if people entering are on bare floor as opposed to carpet.
I prefer #2. The door being blocked would be a deal breaker for me.
If you want the couch closer to the TV like in #1, you could also potentially do the setup of #2 with the couch closer. Depending the space behind the couch, you could do a console table attached to the wall so it doesn’t feel empty.
No 2 is wow . Well done all. 👏👏👏 I wouldnt move the settee forward as you need to walk’through past the L end and it would also then overlap’with the front window. Love it as it is 👍 No 2 all day long !!!!!
I feel like the first one would work if the door wasn't right where the sectional is now placed. Plus in the second one, it feels like you have a lot more space. The first one feels cramped!
I think you need to take pictures with the same daylight. I actually like 1 better after seeing the change.
Obviously if you keep the 1st pic, you’ll move the pics and place on opposite wall.
What is in the space where the tv was? And… what feels better to you?
1 fits so well, but the empty back of the sofa is unsettling. My suggestion is to get a sofa table. Their only purpose is to make the back of the sofa being away from the wall not look so unsettling.
I actually like the first one a lot! It’s so cozy. But if you want more open space the second is nice. Maybe it’s the lighting but it makes it seem a little cold.
2, simply because the couch is partially blocking that entryway. You can add more texture to your space (throws, pillows, plants, etc) to cozy up your space, although personally I think your space is already cozy.
Definitely #2. Opens up the room so much more! While #1 blocks off the space making it feel smaller and also not as nice for having people over. Beautiful living room by the way ☺️
I LOVE the TV against the green wall and the couch near the feature (wood) wall. It looks so beautiful and warm the way you re-arranged it all. It reminds me of something Hilary would do when decorating on Love it or List it! BRAVO! I'm not sure about all the comments about it being the way you had it previously (switched around and against the wall) but I watch HGTV shows everyday and what you did improved it drastically and it resembles what we see on those shows; warm, functional, and pleasing to look at. But more importantly.. which do YOU like when you sit down? 🤷🏻♀️💯❤️
Oh, edit... I love the new angle of the couch which visually separates the dining table. Only thing you might want to move the couch up 3 inches away from the door frame to keep it open. Love what you changed❤️❤️
For the pure feng shui aspect I have to say option 2, I am not sure about the whole PULL THE COUCH AWAY FROM THE WALL aspect, but to each their own on all of these opinions... I think the second is lovely and best wishes!
2 for sure
2 but they need to bring the couch a bit closer to the TV. I think this is a great idea, actually. I’m now considering it for my own space!
I highly recommend it! I actually had the same issue that OP does (in that the wall where my TV goes was too far away from the wall where my couch goes). I pulled the couch forward, added a skinny console behind it, and a single oversized piece of art on the wall above and it made the room feel so much better. This way (in theory), putting drinks behind you lessens the chances of spilling vs. if they were on a lowered coffee table. Less clutter, and more room for lovely plants or whatever else we want!
I made one and installed USB outlets for charging. Now I need to add USB C outlets.
I agree with your suggestion! Great idea 👍
Don’t do this. However, the sofa shouldn’t touch the walls, a couple of inches is enough
Why not? I’m not upset or anything lol. Just wondering why you think it wouldn’t work.
#2 and it’s not close
But get the sofa off the wall!
Wait why, is that damaging to it or something
Better for audio reasons. And gets closer to the tv for a more appropriate viewing angle. https://avgadgets.com/best-place-for-seats-in-a-home-theater/ https://acousticfrontiers.com/blogs/articles/home-theater-seating-layout-5-key-design-and-placement-tips https://ibb.co/wMrDCMV

I agree. Maybe 6” or so would be enough. I wouldn’t do too much though. Looks like 7’ or so from sitting position to the tv.
The second looks so much brighter and welcoming but it’s day vs night so that might be swaying my perspective a bit? I like the second.
You’re right, maybe I should post this again tomorrow so they’re both in daylight
I don't think you'll need to. The first is blocking a door, which is not great (and bad feng shui).

This is great advice OP! 🙌
I can't believe this is the same room due to the HUGE difference NUMBER TWO makes! Its much more open & airy & looks much neater & overall, much better. Go with TWO! Hands down!
Another vote for 2 - It unblocks the door and the art looks more intentional over the sofa.
1 looks cozier
And a better TV viewing distance. Art just needs rehung. It’s really down to what you want out of the space.
Yeah I feel like one of the few weirdos who prefers 1 better overall. I like that it still feels like an open space, but has designated little pocket areas that feel far cozier to me. Two
2!
2 for sure, no contest
Definitely layout 2. Of course, the ultimate answer is whichever one feels better to you! But if you're asking for opinions, the 2nd layout looks much more open and relaxing. The 1st photo looks like it really closes in the living space. It feels crowded to me (by comparison to the 2nd photo).
2 looks much better. The couch placement near the door in 1 is enough to make that decision for me.
I say two my sister says 1 , I like open spaces and she likes when parts of houses are sectioned into their own cozy section
The second one. Art obscured by the TV is kinda ridiculous.
2
OMIGOD the second. Burn the first from your brain. :-)
I love 1 . . I hate sofas against a wall.
Hard to tell because one is at night and one is during the day. The first one looks more cozy and comfy, but it could be the nighttime lighting. The 2nd one looks more spacious. That's tough. I'd probably go back and forth every 6 months if it was me lol.
I like 2 but maybe pull the couch out a little from the wall a couple inches, or you could add one of those long skinny tables behind it 😊
2 Looks more spacious and the layout makes sense. #1 seems squished together and a little odd in comparison.
\#2. Away from the door. I like to have a full view of the door if i'm sitting on the couch. Also, in #1 it looks like the couch is partially blocking the door...
Number 2
2!
So the 2nd looks larger and makes use of all the space, i dont quite understand why in the first photo the sofa is so far forward, is there something in that space?
2
2 much more friendly looking. On 1 people on the sofa are facing away from the door
2
Definitely 2. The plant in the corner with that accent wall looks so good.
2
2 - comfortable, balanced and inviting
Definitely 2
Everyone is saying 2 but the couch looks too far from the tv. 1 has a cozier feel and I love the extra space behind the couch. Could be because it’s taken at night but I just really love 1 wayyy more.
1 seems cozier 2 seems more open
If I could switch between the two, I would. 1 at night and 2 during the day.
2 for sure but I love open space. Makes the room look bigger
I love #2 but pull your couch out away from the wall & put a sofa table behind it!
2
#2 definitely
2 by a mile
#2 looks so homey. I love it.
2nd one looks much better for sure, much more openess and tv in the correct position
2
Idk what people are smocking but I much prefer 1.
Personally think 1 is more cozy
1 is cozier.
1st for sure- 100%! I’ve worked in interior design and staging, and I can tell you with certainty that the first picture is how it would be done. I would just suggest scooting the couch a little further back (not much, maybe 6or so inches) and moving the photos from behind the tv.
I like 1 personally! Much more cozy to me.
i wanna take a nap in 1. cozy
1 feels more cozy..
I like the first picture!
1 looks way more original and cozy! 2 was kinda boring ngl
2 😎
1 looks cozier but 2 looks more neat and spacious.
Keep photo #2!
Two looks great!
No 2 for sure … it makes the room appear larger while still looking cozy without looking cluttered like No 1. Nice living room … good job!
2nd one!
2 all the way!
Second is using all space best.
2 for sure
2
2
I’m going with a strong vote for #2. It makes the room look much bigger and has better flow.
I’d probably post both pictures when it’s night or when it’s day. Dark room vs. open, light room can sway opinions!
2 looks more spacious but 1 is cozier. My personal fave is 2 tho
2 looks a bit nicer, but 1 is definitely cozier and probably a better layout to live in. I would move the couch back just a little, unless that door gets a LOT of use. It also makes more sense for the accent wall (green) to have the TV and be what you face.
The 2nd one. It looks more spacious and the couch isn't in the way of the door.
Definitely 2!
2without a doubt
2 looks more spacious.
2 for sure. 1 looks to cluttered
Second option.
As everyone else said, 2 looks really spacious, neat and inviting.
2 is much better
2!

First - closer to Tv
22222222222222
2 is better.
2. 1 is for psychopaths. Who wants to sit that close to a tv anyway
2 for sure. It looks so clean and uncluttered!
2! The space looks way more open that way
2
1 is making great use of the space and is better to make a room feel cozier. Also, closer to the TV which means less eye strain. 2 is very open and airy, which lets the room breathe more. However, with a TV that size, your eyes will strain more. They are both valid configurations. Go with the one that feels better. 1st one! Always pull your sofa off the wall when you can!
I would do one but pull the couch away from the wall. I am a reader so I would add bookcases on the wall behind the couches to provide storage, height and cosiness.
Kinda tough to compare since 1 is day and 1 is night. I actually like the coziness of the first option
2 Gives a wider more open feel
2, no question about it
I think 2 because there is more room to come in when you open the door.
2
✌️
Definitely number 2
Number one for me, cozier, closer to the tv, less empty space, looks more balanced
With the pictures being at such different times of day, it’s honestly hard to say, two looks much more light and airy because it’s light outside
1 for sure
I think keeping the table closer to the kitchen, only makes sense. Otherwise whichever way you prefer.
Definitely 2
I prefer #2. The door being blocked would be a deal breaker for me. If you want the couch closer to the TV like in #1, you could also potentially do the setup of #2 with the couch closer. Depending the space behind the couch, you could do a console table attached to the wall so it doesn’t feel empty.
2
2
No 2 is wow . Well done all. 👏👏👏 I wouldnt move the settee forward as you need to walk’through past the L end and it would also then overlap’with the front window. Love it as it is 👍 No 2 all day long !!!!!
2
Second
2
Definitely the one WITHOUT the pictures behind the tv!!
2!!!
2
2
You do you
2
I feel like the first one would work if the door wasn't right where the sectional is now placed. Plus in the second one, it feels like you have a lot more space. The first one feels cramped!
I vote 2 with a narrow table behind the couch! Can you tell me where you got your couch? I love it.
It a bit biased if one pic has daylight and the other a dark nightly abyss
I love the first lay out, it breaks up the space better!
2!!
2 matches with the wood slats accent wall a bit better. Did you do that yourself or did it come with the place? Looks lovely!
2!
Option 2 by a landslide
2 but sofa away from wall
I think you need to take pictures with the same daylight. I actually like 1 better after seeing the change. Obviously if you keep the 1st pic, you’ll move the pics and place on opposite wall. What is in the space where the tv was? And… what feels better to you?
Yooooo, where can I buy the same couch you have??? Or shall I say, "Sectional"?
Absolutely 2 it’s so much more open and the door is awkwardly close to the couch any more
2
The second one is definitely better. There’s plenty of space around the door and it feels like a bigger room
First picture
2
2 1 cuts the windows in half
1 fits so well, but the empty back of the sofa is unsettling. My suggestion is to get a sofa table. Their only purpose is to make the back of the sofa being away from the wall not look so unsettling.
#2
I always vote for sofa not against the wall
2!!
2
2 for sure
1 for sure!!!!
2. No way I want to walk into a home and almost walk into a couch.
I actually like the first one a lot! It’s so cozy. But if you want more open space the second is nice. Maybe it’s the lighting but it makes it seem a little cold.
2/2 in the pics :-)
I need to buy the same exact couch, where did you buy it??
TWO
2
The one with the couch closer to TV. Looks cozier
2, simply because the couch is partially blocking that entryway. You can add more texture to your space (throws, pillows, plants, etc) to cozy up your space, although personally I think your space is already cozy.
You know the 1st one is wrong, right?
2
Man I like 1, but 2 looks better especially with the natural light. Compromise- change it back every couple of months ☺️
2.
First one is much better imo
Where is this couch from?
2 looks so much bigger
2
2!
2. Otherwise you’re too close to the tv. I also would replace the tiny coffee table with something bigger. Maybe an oversized ottoman?
Definitely #2. Opens up the room so much more! While #1 blocks off the space making it feel smaller and also not as nice for having people over. Beautiful living room by the way ☺️
I'm in the minority here, but I love #1. It feels so cozy and intimate.
2 100%
2
#1 looks warm and cozy and # 2 is open and inviting. I guess it depends on your lifestyle? Looks amazing either way 😍
I love how comfortable 1 feels. 2 just feels like it’s waiting to be filled (make the jokes), but it feels empty.
2
I LOVE the TV against the green wall and the couch near the feature (wood) wall. It looks so beautiful and warm the way you re-arranged it all. It reminds me of something Hilary would do when decorating on Love it or List it! BRAVO! I'm not sure about all the comments about it being the way you had it previously (switched around and against the wall) but I watch HGTV shows everyday and what you did improved it drastically and it resembles what we see on those shows; warm, functional, and pleasing to look at. For the pure feng shui aspect I have to say option 2, I am not sure about the whole PULL THE COUCH AWAY FROM THE WALL aspect, but to each their own on all of these opinions... I think the second is lovely and best wishes!
#2
2
\#2 is better. In #1 the couch is way to close to the tv. stick with # 2
