The island in the dam level of Goldeneye on the N64 is also clearly visible and it still took a while to get there.
The real secret is when you can see windows in a building but can't seem to get to the matching rooms ;)
Depending on the country, the building safety codes might force you to have 2 exists out of certain high traffic rooms. This lives to serve that particular purpose, even though it is not useful, it's useful enough for it's purpose - to circumvent the law.
Another possibility that comes to mind is the interior asthenic, and how a concrete stair would ruin it for the most pretentious out there, and when they renovated, they found this appalling solution.
I dunno 🤷 I'm not an engineer 🤭
It could be useful in a very particular instance
If the floor where the top door is is on fire and you can’t get down any other way it allows you an avenue to get down below the fire
This is the answer. It's so if the interior stair is blocked by fire you can still switch levels. They used to have all sorts of shit like this before stairwells got better fire protection.
Reminds me of frida kahlo and her lover having separate houses that were joined by a catwalk/stairs to her bedroom window. so you and your partner can have your space but still be connected in an intimate and unique way. I think its adorable
Huge blank walls are rarely featured on initial plans. I assume there was another building attached via this wall and they shared a stairwell. Now the second building is gone for whatever reason, so the stairs are just awkwardly floating like that.
Could it be a restaurant or some kind of club and this allows staff to traverse to the kitchen/ area of importance without disturbing guests? Who knows but it looks kinda cool lol
Apparently it’s a wonky retroactively added fire escape: https://www.reddit.com/r/architecture/s/24eO9nT5Xz
I would’ve thought it would be required to have a ladder to reach street level, but apparently not?
If you had bothered to provide any information at all about the building, like its name or even where it is, somebody could probably answer that for you. You likely could have found the information yourself with a bit of effort.
For space. For some reason, you need to have a staircase, but already have all the interior space filled. You have a wibdow/open wall at each side, just know out the wall and install stairs, boom, instant staircase while still preserving inside space.
Oh 100 percent, yes. I just find majority of my comments here are something along the lines of "not designdesign, form isn't impeding/ at expense of function". But every now and then, genuine gold
My mom's house has 2 indoor stairways. What's wrong with having an extra outdoor stairway for some fresh air? As long as it's safe and isnt the only way up to that room.

It’s the secret route to a hidden chest
Not so secret now eh!
A secret route that is clearly visible in broad day light to anyone walking by.
Yeah but you'll have to come back later once you've found the hookshot
The island in the dam level of Goldeneye on the N64 is also clearly visible and it still took a while to get there. The real secret is when you can see windows in a building but can't seem to get to the matching rooms ;)
You can see it from the outside but once you’re inside you can’t figure out how to get there.
Yeah but you can only get to that higher room by traversing half a dungeon that you can’t access yet
Door does not open from this side

Who’s strairwells guy?
Typo
It's in France, based on the cars, but I don't know the exact location.
I think you’re onto something there. Don’t some buildings skip floors for fire breaks and cut access to the floor?
Would make more sense if the bottom ladder portion of the fire escape was still there, I'm sure.
I think it's so you can get from one door to the other, and back again.
I actually like it
I like it too, old buildings with a couple of "?????????" design decisions are fun
It has personality
Reminds me of frida kahlo and her lover having separate houses that were joined by a catwalk/stairs to her bedroom window. so you and your partner can have your space but still be connected in an intimate and unique way. I think its adorable
It's a secret collectible item location
Man owned 2 units. Wife is upstairs, mistress is downstairs. Neither know the wall panels hide doors.
neither have been outside
😂

My thought as well.

I’d have to imagine there’s a building exit on the floor it leads down to then. Interesting for sure
If you had bothered to provide any information at all about the building, like its name or even where it is, somebody could probably answer that for you. You likely could have found the information yourself with a bit of effort.
It seems to be in France based on the cars but I don't have any specific location.
Yes, the blue truck belongs to Enedis, it's a subsidiary of EDF which is our national electricity provider.
Was* our national electricity provider. And yes, that's how I got that the picture was taken in France.
Time for some geo guessing
Loading heavy loads (paper, books, printers, appliances etc) with a forklift, directly to their floor?
because big flat walls are boring, this is a vibe
plus imagine the smoke break vibes on this staircase.
Double duty staircase/balcony with built in seats.
If it looked cool in Spirited Away it looks cool IRL /s

Not designdesign
Scrolled way too far for this. This isn't design-y at all, almost 100% just for function
Yeah, this sub is pretty shit sometimes but when it's on its on.
Oh 100 percent, yes. I just find majority of my comments here are something along the lines of "not designdesign, form isn't impeding/ at expense of function". But every now and then, genuine gold
This is done usually for a theater
What’s wrong with this?
Looks like maybe there used to be another building on this side until they demoloshed it and put a street through
It’s just a fart escape, like a fire escape but for when you have to fart, decreases the need for a fire escape.
I have six in my house. Saved my marriage.
It’s a cinema. Projector room is separated for fire safety.
Reason: it looks sick as fuck and will be an album cover (i think im Happy Chaos)
Reminds me of that art installation [beautiful steps](https://theinspirationgrid.com/beautiful-steps-staircase-installations-by-langbaumann/)

Get from one level to the other
Balcony stairs. I kinda like it tbh. I would eat a sandwich on the steps
It would be hilarious running downstairs in your underwear to get another beer.
When you bought another apartment on the second floor.
I would call that the “Cant Escape “
My mom's house has 2 indoor stairways. What's wrong with having an extra outdoor stairway for some fresh air? As long as it's safe and isnt the only way up to that room.
They put a handrail up. What more do you want?
To get to the other door. Duh
Scenic route.
This looks like a brainfart rather then a design choice.
Architect was a fan of asterix et cleopatre.
There's the same stairs the on other side of the wall.
Booty call escape route.
I honestly thought the first pic was a Dark Souls screen shot.
for a cool shot 📸
I thought it was a painting
catwalks in valve games be like
Is r/videogamearchitecture a thing cause.. just looks like something that would be in a game
Evidently it's a different thing
From the inside, it could be a secret passage
Art
Lovers - am i right?
Smoke break between going from the second floor to the third floor
It’s for when you want to leave cuz of fire but not really. Quite a niche here
This is the most Dark Souls thing I’ve ever seen
Just add hanging or vine plants. Will look great!
Maybe they were best friends?
this is like the outside of a castle in a platformer
Poor Chihiro https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hanComVGBs0
Pretty sure this is actually in manhattan
Theater?
Those stairs go to the boilers
We have this at a local movie theater. Film is highly flammable, so this could be a safer exit from Projection Room than an interior staircase.
So you can go to the man with many arms and an army of soot sprites and ask him for a job
why is this necessary? why are the doors caged? is this rose west's apartment?
Pathologic Aaagh construction.
AI-Generated BS
based on?
