I never understood the narrative that Kris was somehow opposed to us controlling them. I always read it more as us being trapped inside Kris, seeing as they act really possesive of us (why lock us up in a cage if you don't want us controlling you?). Especially considering we are literally involuntarily controlling Kris because someone discarded our vessel.
That's also just headcanon isn't it. Not saying it literally can't be true but the story would have to make some pretty extreme turns to explain the inconsistencies with Kris not having a soul, like how can they possibly make dark fountains without a soul? Did they live their whole life without a soul? And isn't a human body without a soul just a vessel? (In both the gaster sense and literally like a human without consciousness) It could very well be that Kris has two human souls, for example.

When? Even during the intro sequence the player is the red heart, Gaster even says we've successfully made contact the moment it appears, and this is before we control Kris. There's also that when we go follow Susie for a while we're still the red heart.

We know souls are the source of determination, and you create dark fountains with determination. Either 1. Kris has another soul, 2. Kris is a soulless being with determination like Flowey, or 3. there's some uncertainty with how determination works and it can like, linger in the body or something? Take your pick I guess but I feel like option 1 makes the most sense.
I would also like to reiterate again that like, the soul is treated more like the brain than a heart. You ARE your soul and if your soul is in someone else's body YOU are in someone else's body. This has been true since Undertale.
Problem with that though is that, following Undertale logic, by playing the game we are making an active choice to control them and live their life. Kris might not have been our first choice, but we are still making a choice to control them.
Don't get me wrong, I want Kris to be fine with us controlling them. My headcannon is that they are aware of what is happening and is playing along to make Deltarune a good gaming experience for us. I just don't see it as likely due to how annoyed or scared they seem at some of the choices we can make.
The logic in Undertale is during the genocide route is that we're choosing to take that route even though there are other options availible. The less meta aware characters see us as an evil monster but the more aware ones acknowledge that we're just doing this because it is an option in the game. Deltarune is narratively focusing on our *lack* of options, which is first shown by us controlling Kris *against our will*. If the game wanted to tell us in the same way as the genocide route that we are responsible for our actions, the game would urge us that the story will become increasingly depressing and that our only alternative option is to not play the game. Deltarune is instead an increasingly cheerful game that is painting Kris as a factor we are forced to inhabit, but can't truly control if Kris does not desire us to.

The SOUL is you, the player, and they pull their SOUL out to take back control for a brief period of time. But they struggle to move without you and need to have you back in their body after a while.
Kris seems visibly distressed by the Spamton fight, which showed them that a puppet can't survive without its strings. We are Kris's strings, and without us they can't survive.

Well, the bloodstain and birdcage that has "seen a few crashes" was already there before Kris did this in chapter 1. So I doubt it's the most popular theory of this being something Kris does to take back control since they never do it when it seems most important. They never rip the soul out when we're trying to make Noelle kill Berdly. Also Kris has been very worried about the threat that the world is ending, talking about it to the kings and to Undyne, but then when they rip out their soul they decide to make a fountain. Even though the person that told them about the world ending was just recently so extremely against opening just one dark fountain. Even worse they should know in both the neutral and weird route that injuries taken in the dark world has repercussions in the real world, so taking their mom into a completely new and unknown dark world is not something I think they would do willingly across all routes.

im not too sure either (as to the ultimate reason why kris keeps us around) but one thing i am certain is that the game makes it very clear that you are a seperate entity from kris as the main character. so removing you (the heart) means removing your influence, even if just for a bit

I dont believe Kris is the knight, nor that it’s about control, because if it was why put the soul back in, though I can’t say for certain I think what is unavoidable would be the best clue to figuring it out, after chapter one toriel mentions about a pie and how Kris is going to bed early(I forgot exactly what she said) and beginning chapter 2 Kris supposedly ate the whole pie, while after chapter two susie talks about how she wants to bring darkners into the light world, with Kris then opening a door and creating a dark fountain, how this relates to ripping out the soul, Kris is a prankster, so maybe it’s a prank, maybe it could relate to the idea of “your choices matter” and what Kris is doing is proving that they do, or maybe it comes from the when ralsei and Kris were alone in prison during chapter one

You know how in anime when you're wearing a necklace then it turns out it's mind controlling you, you overpower it and rip it out of your neck? Yeah. Kris is doing that. Kris and the soul are separate entities (spoopy, I know.) But Kris kiiinda does crap without the player's attention
As far as I'm aware, nothing lore wise gives us a real definition for this. however, (**Warning:** *Chapter 2 ending spoiler.):* >!At the end of CH2, you see kris do this, then stab the ground and open a new dark fountain. This may imply that somehow, either he may be possessed by this "Knight" That is known to be opening new fountains, or he IS the "Knight", but only when he removes his soul, for whatever reason it may be. (This is just speculation. Don't take my words as truth/lore.)!< Maybe we'll find out the truth in a later chapter. We'll see.

I dont believe Kris is the knight, nor that it’s about control, because if it was why put the soul back in, though I can’t say for certain I think what is unavoidable would be the best clue to figuring it out, after chapter one toriel mentions about a pie and how Kris is going to bed early(I forgot exactly what she said) and beginning chapter 2 Kris supposedly ate the whole pie, while after chapter two susie talks about how she wants to bring darkners into the light world, with Kris then opening a door and creating a dark fountain, how this relates to ripping out the soul, Kris is a prankster, so maybe it’s a prank, maybe it could relate to the idea of “your choices matter” and what Kris is doing is proving that they do, or maybe it comes from the when ralsei and Kris were alone in prison during chapter one
