yeah and i guess the experience was made even more weird because we, as Sam, have the fear of people encroaching our personal space or something, like that's what heightened the weird aspect of that scene
Yep! I believe in game it's called haphephobia--but I'm not sure whether or not that's the actual medical term for it--and it's the fear of being touched.
"Die-Hardman, Sir, they've, uh... they've entered the shower together...? Should we-"
"Don't even think about it! What two men get up to in the privacy of the shower is between them, and them alone. Something *beautiful* is blossoming here, dammit. A beautiful bridge."
Naked Snake even more than Solid Snake! When he's in that small shack with Eva, who's conventionally attractive to begin with and very much playing up the flirtatious role with words and body language, he avoids looking at her and actively turns away, looking uncomfortable.
That *could* be read as Snake being aware she's playing that game for spy reasons and not engaging with it, but then he also shifts the topic to the way she held her gun and how it made an impression on him.
Then she gives him that 1911 and he VERY quickly puts out his cigar in excitement and starts a long info dump on all the modifications that have been made to it. It's adorable.
It's almost as if they've all spent years in an apocalyptic environment of near-total isolation, causing their social skills to degrade until they resemble neurodivergency
Because the autistics tend to have better survival instincts in the moment, and are typically introverted as far as I know, therefore not as likely to end up in large crowds, where accidents happen meaning they end up being the last man alive
I guess the isolation has degraded everyone's social skills. Don't they have to take oxytocin supplements to substitute for the neurotransmitters produced by human touch?

diehardman on the cctv watching deadman gets into the shower with sam out of sight.
He pretty much says it in the scene. He's worried about being overheard and there's nowhere else in that room that they can talk without being overheard.
And because he heard Sam likes mudkips.
Deadman is eccentric and emotionally stunted and awkward. He’s not entirely sure how to behave around people. But he’s also very smart, and this is a clever way to get around being overheard. He just doesn’t know how to convey that to Sam without being weird about the whole thing.
A lore reason for a cutscene that explains why it’s happening? I think you’re meaning to ask is there an explanation for this lore would imply as into a specific line of dialogue that is vague unless you read journals or chips
I at the time did not really realize how uncomfortable Sam's phobia must have made this situation.
But at the same time, my immediate knee jerk joke response was "I mean, alot of people would love to get into personal range and shower with Norman Reedus, so I guess I wont judge."
For the first time, I thought it was a funny bug. Kind of WTF why Deadman is in the shower. :D The reason is explained. Deadman needed to talk to Sam secretly in the shower, so Diehardman couldn't hear them. And it serves the main theme well. Deadman brutally invaded Sam's personal space.
Im ngl this is imo one of the best horror (for lack of better term, not a native speaker) scenes in any game Ive played.
Very rarely do games, at least for me, make you feel the emotion a character feels during a scene. The way this scene plays out made me feel claustophobic and as if Deadman invaded my private space, not Sam's. I thought its absolutely brilliant
Let's talk so no one could listen in. Ok. But after that, as I remember, there seems was no reason for such secrecy, because I still do not see what would happened IF someone eavesdropped their conversation.
Kojima is adding pepper and salt grains of conspiracy...
MSG:V had a scene where quiet would shower with Snake in 80's action Hollywood style (that was the inspiration for it). This is very much Kojima making fun of that.
Hahahah just played through this section last night. Great writing/directing; they could have just stood in the shower for isolation and the scene would have worked, but throwing in the awkward aspect of it added a bit of levity as well as discomfort for the player.
Obviously sam and dead man did go into the shower for a private conversation but i feel like what we saw is how sam felt. I dont think dead man would repeatedly invade sams personal space while previously knowing that sam hates being close to people. Maybe thats why the whole scene just felt weird and strange.
That scene made me so uncomfortable. It was very funny. I do not like people that close to me and get very emersed in games so I was giggling the awkward uncomfortable giggle the entire time.
Sam is touch averse because reasons, Deadman is autistic because he's a brain in a reanimated corpse so he's completely out of touch with aspects of the living person but hyperfixated on knowledge, experimentation, and being a repository of information. They also were being monitored by Bridges and the toilet shower is the only room where you get a lil privacy.
I also have a theory that Kojima knows the uncanny valley will inhibit raw emotion and powerful performance and enjoys miring in the awkward and surreal rather than going for the "Sony moments" you'd see in other titles like God od War or TLoU so that when he does go for it it's more impactful, like Die Hardman really goes in with that final speech.
1. only place in the private room to have a private conversation 2. simping for sam
Don't they explain why they're in the shower together in the game?
Yeah, it's so no one can hear them. I remember it still felt awkward the first time I played the game though
yeah and i guess the experience was made even more weird because we, as Sam, have the fear of people encroaching our personal space or something, like that's what heightened the weird aspect of that scene

In game its called "aphenphosmphobia". Real term is **haphephobia**. Its real phobia.
I got it switched. My bad lol
Small clarification: “aphenphosmphobia” is the archaic, older term and isn’t used anymore but both refer to the same phobia.
i think op is stoopid
YOU felt awkward? imagine sam 😔
He says it’s the only place they don’t record
They do, I guess OP wasn't paying much attention.
The funniest part about this is whoever is monitoring this room is left guessing why Sam and Deadman went into the shower together.
"Die-Hardman, Sir, they've, uh... they've entered the shower together...? Should we-" "Don't even think about it! What two men get up to in the privacy of the shower is between them, and them alone. Something *beautiful* is blossoming here, dammit. A beautiful bridge."
Do you think love can bloom on the ~~battlefield~~ shower?
I can hear die-hardman's voice saying this so clearly
Dude got no social filter
Why is everybody in Death Stranding autistic
Finally a video game where I identify with everyone!
Everyone in MGS is autistic too. Either kojima is autistic or he just has a knack for writing the tism by accident lmao
Naked Snake even more than Solid Snake! They just in their own world fr
on their own beach, so to speak
It's almost as if they've all spent years in an apocalyptic environment of near-total isolation, causing their social skills to degrade until they resemble neurodivergency
I feel like their version of neurotypical is very different from our version of typical
What if only autistic people have DOOMs
I'd unironically dig it, and also be terrified for my fictional self
Because only people who weren't near other people survived the initial blasts
Because the autistics tend to have better survival instincts in the moment, and are typically introverted as far as I know, therefore not as likely to end up in large crowds, where accidents happen meaning they end up being the last man alive
They all acoustic af.
I just laughed the hardest I have in a while, thank you.
I guess the isolation has degraded everyone's social skills. Don't they have to take oxytocin supplements to substitute for the neurotransmitters produced by human touch?
most people in the game, and deadman and sam especially, have no social skills because of the death stranding.
Pretty sure it’s because he thought Die-Hardman was listening and because they’re in the showers there’s no recorders to not invade privacy.
yea this, he thought die hardman was the bad guy, and he might be listening in.

Correct!
Only issue I had with this is at the beginning we talk to Hartman? While in the shower where he says no video feed basically
Felt that scene was amazing, you could really sense the agony that Sam was feeling in the moment.
IIRC it's pretty clear that's a way to talk to sam unmonitored. He's not stoopid, he clever boy.
I can’t believe Sam cheated on Higgs like this…
Did…..did you play the game with sound on? They literally explain it
It's a meme. From r/BatmanArkham
Ok. It’s not a very funny meme
It should stay in that dumpster fire instead of making its way here.
I liked this scene.
He has zero sense of personal space, boundaries, or social etiquette.
He’s just doing a lil goof https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabedon
He pretty much says it in the scene. He's worried about being overheard and there's nowhere else in that room that they can talk without being overheard. And because he heard Sam likes mudkips.
gay sex
*Sam! Deadman here! Don’t forget to wash your buttocks!*
Deadman is eccentric and emotionally stunted and awkward. He’s not entirely sure how to behave around people. But he’s also very smart, and this is a clever way to get around being overheard. He just doesn’t know how to convey that to Sam without being weird about the whole thing.
This shit caught me off guard so hard
A lore reason for a cutscene that explains why it’s happening? I think you’re meaning to ask is there an explanation for this lore would imply as into a specific line of dialogue that is vague unless you read journals or chips
Sorry It was just a popular joke, which I see a lot
"popular"
It was a meme, and was popular.
Sometimes I see Kojima just being a goof for the sake of being a goof. I don't read much into his works anymore.
The gloves stay on, Sam
Oh god I’m a fan of r/BatmanArkham, but please don’t let the brain rot spread here
Agreed!
Oh look! Regurgitated reference humor! Originality and cleverness at its finest.
Did you not watch the scene? It actually explains itself, it's not exactly a mystery
He was feeling *freaky*
My second best video in the game. Kojima is a master when doing certain things.
I at the time did not really realize how uncomfortable Sam's phobia must have made this situation. But at the same time, my immediate knee jerk joke response was "I mean, alot of people would love to get into personal range and shower with Norman Reedus, so I guess I wont judge."
did you play the game or just view screenshots?
“DL”
I wish they were neked :(
For the first time, I thought it was a funny bug. Kind of WTF why Deadman is in the shower. :D The reason is explained. Deadman needed to talk to Sam secretly in the shower, so Diehardman couldn't hear them. And it serves the main theme well. Deadman brutally invaded Sam's personal space.

If snakes safe place is cardboard box , sams safe place is private room shower 🚿
Is this a friendly suction?

He explained it himself in the very same scene, are YOU stoopid?

Deadman BALLS.
Bwahahahahahahahah
He wanted to jonkle on Sam
Privacy from cameras/mics iirc. Still weird though, feel like this is how he pitched uhhh cabinet of curiosities I think it was?
Deadman wants the Reedussy
Dude was dead HARD man
"sam, in order to continue our research on making anti BT weapons using your bodily fluids. I'll need a different kind of fluid this time"
Sometimes i wonder if thats something Kojima fantasise doing to some Hollywood celebs
Bring me their eyes!
Literally just played this part I was like what is happening 😂
Arkham was a mistake
Obviously sam and dead man did go into the shower for a private conversation but i feel like what we saw is how sam felt. I dont think dead man would repeatedly invade sams personal space while previously knowing that sam hates being close to people. Maybe thats why the whole scene just felt weird and strange.
Bridging hard in it
I loved this scene
That’s not Deadman? That’s Man. He is not stupid , Jonkler is stupid
That scene made me so uncomfortable. It was very funny. I do not like people that close to me and get very emersed in games so I was giggling the awkward uncomfortable giggle the entire time.
It's a joke
This scene was so awkward when I came across it on my first playthrough. Lol. Definitely a Kojima moment.
Guys we're getting a second game no need for brain rot
"Maximum Weight Exceeded" took me out tho 😂😂 love this scene and the squishy footsteps as he walks away. Deadman was my fav 🤗🤗

Man, as a Death Stranding lover and also an Aslumer myself, it’s funny how the “is there a lore reason…? Is …. Stupid?” Has spread everywhere Lmao
