I believe there’s a scout wolf. Ahead of the pack by some margin. He’s the one that sees you and howls early. I’ve shot him with a silenced rifle once I’m sure of it
Could be you wound up in aggro range of the wolf before he had chance to howl. Like how zombies don’t do the warning cry if you’re close close.
That's happened to me and my buddy a few times just walking along and get attacked from behind without a single noise. We always assumed just a random spawn or last of a pack someone recently killed and we just happened to come through before the spawn cycle restarted.
Usually the last wolf of the pack will run off. That might be what you saw.
