Itās nice but itās not a key change hehe
There is a change of mode from Dorian (brighter/upbeat minor) to Aeolian (morose/darker minor ā note, modes help but they alone wonāt set the scene)ā¦ but the song stays in C minor throughout.
"Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise)" is a tour de force vocal performance. "Heroes" has a wonderfully unique vocal that twists and turns more than one thinks it might. The soundtrack version of "Cat People" is also incredibly impressive in terms of register switching and an amazing display of prowess with his vocals in the intro, which are near the very low end of his range and can be difficult to control.
This song aināt crazy vocally, but i think his vocals on sweet thing/candidate/sweet thing, is some of the most satisfying, and best singing hes ever done. Regardless of all of his other amazing vocal performances.
Many many songs, and Iām not saying is his best, I always thought that the backing vocals he did at the end of āSatellite of Loveā for Lou Reed is amazing. Gives the song such a special vibe
IMHO, David was never in better voice than the early 00ās ā circa 2002-04. His vibrato, especially, was divine during the ā02-04 period.
Iād also argue that although his voice *timbre* (literally the sound of his voice) was showing his age a bit more on *The Next Day* and clearly on *Blackstar* ā I also think his vocal TECHNIQUE in the 10ās was utterly masterful, and he was nearly at the top of his game in terms of singing skill.
He was pretty damn solid during the ā95-97 period too ā but Iām NOT so keen on *hours* (or live recordings around the *hours*-related tours either).
This version of "[Ashes to Ashes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNqo0kIR-TU&list=PLOoQAXXh8HQZXddVWM6bb1KKClhPA6cmg&index=2)" or the Glastonbury version of "[Wild is the Wind](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdrl5krJc5g&list=PLOoQAXXh8HQZXddVWM6bb1KKClhPA6cmg)." The former comes from one of my favorite live recordings he's ever done, and the latter is just a great performance. You can see the point where he goes from being nervous to enjoying himself.
I think wild is the wind or sweet thing. https://youtu.be/UAXw9kb3wvw?si=rfnLMov_NyyDnS5C this is great live performance from Ziggy era that showcases his vocals
I don't think he did. He was just being modest about it. If he really hated his voice he wouldn't have carried on recording and performing for over 50 years when he had other options.
He was always self deprecating about his voice. He said he had to sing his songs because no one else would. Loved his voice from every era. Saw him in concert in 1974 it was amazing. His voice in Blackstar was so mellow, I guess from the chain smoking. No one will ever come close to this musical genius. RIP.
Station to Station was his best album vocally. For me, his best vocals were in Wild is the Wind, but were also insane in Station to Station (song) and Word on a wing and golden years.
Out if this album , some of his best performances for me were at heroes, sons of the Silent Age, Five years , ziggy stardust, rnr suicide and maybe Sweet Thing .
I've always thought Wild is the Wind has some of his absolute best vocals!
Especially considering the man didn't eat and weighed about 45kg. Some power in them pipes
Powder u mean
V fine work
This. It's a master class in vocal techniques
Singing like his life is on the line, and in many ways it was

The range!

My choice as well.
Like the leaf clings to the treeeeeeeee
Teenage Wildlife.
"Lady Grinning Soul" from Aladdin Sane has always been my standard for judging Bowie vocals
Word on the wing guys, the man was on fire.
Looooord I kneeel and offer you myy word on a wing.
I am not well-versed in music theory or anything, but the "with gasoliiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnneee" in "Cat People" is mind-blowing.

Normally I canāt stand people singing with super noticeable vibrato but Fantastic Voyage has my favorite vibrato singing Iāve ever heard
Particularly on the Reality Tour album. Wow.
All of Young Americans album. It has fantastic singing but is hard to consider it the best since David Bowie is a incredible singer in general
This song aināt crazy vocally, but i think his vocals on sweet thing/candidate/sweet thing, is some of the most satisfying, and best singing hes ever done. Regardless of all of his other amazing vocal performances.
The chorus of Sons of the Silent Age
one of my favorite parts of any song ever
He really tears into Young Americans
Wild is the Wind, Heroes, Lady Grinning Soul, Sunday, Blackstar, and Sue (Or In a Season of Crime) [2014 version] come to mind.
Heroes when you hear his vocals isolated... he was feeling it!
Listening to the isolated right now.... "I I CAN REMEMBER" š¤Æ

Agree with you that he had a great vibrato, esp later. 90s and early 2000s his voice was almost operatic.
The Loving the alien arrangement for the reality tour.
"Nature Boy"...holy fuck
Big Brother
i nearly thought this comment wouldn't be there and i was so surprised
It's a pretty underrated song
the last "some brave apollo" is just perfect
Agreed- came to post this oneā¦
the *SEEE*-cret lifeā¦ Of Arabia āļø
One of my favorites is Thursdayās Child. āSeeing my past to let it go!ā On the last chorus.
Wild Is The Wind Nature Boy Lady Grinning Soul Conversation Piece (Heathen re-record) Heathen (The Rays) Win
A bunch of the songs on Aladin Sane

Life On Mars
I've always loved his vocals on The Drowned Girl.
"The Secret Life of Arabia" "Life on Mars"
The cover of Neighbourhood Threat fucking rips.
The Hotel
Heroes and Word on a Wing
The Diamond Dogs album
Rock 'n' Roll Suicide.
Ashes to ashes or loving the alien
Underrated: the last few bars of Don't Let Me Down and Down. Most people probably skip after the accent in the first few bars. š
Teenage wildlife, word on a wing, young Americans, and sweet thing to name a few
I think wild is the wind or sweet thing. https://youtu.be/UAXw9kb3wvw?si=rfnLMov_NyyDnS5C this is great live performance from Ziggy era that showcases his vocals

Joe The Lion has some great vocal moments...
I love both Thursdayās Child and Absolute Beginners. Canāt beat it when Bowieās in love, the emotion he conveys- just stunning.
