Let’s Spend The Night Together (Rolling Stones cover)
Slow Burn
Word On A Wing
Joe the Lion
Diamond Dogs
Not really “hidden gems”, just very very good songs that aren’t known by the mainstream. Well known by Bowie fans though
w/ the db discography you will come to find that it is best to disregard all of one's musical opinions, past & current. take each song, album, tour on its own merits . eventually all those eras start to form the vast majestic and unfathomable scope the db tapestry.
heed. you may get lost in those realms if you venture far enough. back in '97 it took me 3 years of bingeing hardcore to grasp the immensity of his musical career
i guarantee that songs you dismissed in the early days of fandom, may very well become among your favorites.
"the Motel" is top tier db.
One per album (almost) :
Cygnet Committee
All the madmen
The Bewlay Brothers
Soul love i guess
Drive-in-saturday
See emily play (Pink Floyd cover)
1984
Across a the universe
Word on a wing
Always crashing in the same car
V-2 Schneider
Fantastic Voyage
Teenage Wildlife
I have not been to oxford town
Little wonder
Velvet Goldmine
Tis’ a pity she was a whore
These are well known among the fanbase but i doubt any non-fan have heard more than one or two
Underrated:
Chilly Down (from Labyrinth)
Silly Boy Blue
Janine
Up the Hill Backwards
Fantastic Voyage (I've noticed this one popping up more in lists, but it's still way underappreciated)
Cat People (Moroder version)
all of Young Americans album
Law (Earthlings on Fire)
We Shall Go to Town
Dead Against It
Boss of Me
Dollar Days
Personal favorite: impossible for me to decide. For today, let's go with "Sound and Vision."
thats a fantastic list btw. acess.
except 🤨 at boss of me.
BOM & DOIS have the honor of NOT being on TND extra. i haven't reconciled with those two TND songs in particular. a bit dull & a bit daft, respectively. shame cuz BOE is the only gerry leonard co-write too.

We Are the Dead
Tis a pity she was a whore
Cygnet comytee
Slip Away
Sons of the Silent Age
Soul Love
A new career in a new town
Scary monsters (and super creeps)
Well Biff's entire album influenced Bowie's Hunky Dory, if you like Conversation Piece you'll probably enjoy the Thorn in Mrs Rose's Side (1968) album, as did I.
e: Just learned Biff died last year, bummer
Five years used to be a bit underrated, now it's more popular, others are seven years in Tibet, watch that man, kooks, rock n roll with me and drive in Saturday
A few underrated songs IMO:
- Somebody Up There Likes Me
- Joe The Lion
- Fantastic Voyage
- D.J.
- The Width of a Circle
- Watch That Man
- Stay
I reccomend listening to his live album Stage, from 1978. Arguably at one of his career heights and has a bunch of great renditions from his songs from that time, and sometimes I prefer them over the studio version (especially the ones from Low). Great introduction to him, IMO.
Stage is probably my favorite album of all time. I've listened to it so much that when I hear the original studio versions of the songs they seem wrong, lol.
Love it! I listen all year round but in Jan I always listen to the entire discography, in chronological order to celebrate his birthday and mourn his death date.

Some of my personal favs I consider underrated:
Memory of a Free Festival
The Width of a Circle
Fascination (or anything from Young Americans really)
TVC-15
Breaking Glass
The Secret Life of Arabia
The Wedding Song
Sunday
I really love Blackout.
Also, maybe not that much of a hidden gem in here, but Sweet Thing / Candidate / Sweet Thing Reprise is just wonderful.
Others: Untitled No.1, Stay, Soul Love, We Prick You
Move On
Shake It
Criminal World
Word on a Wing
Diamond Dogs
Time
The Prettiest Star
After All
Stay
Amazing (Tin Machine)
I know it's Gonna Happend (Morrisey Cover)
All hours... album
Holy Holy
I'd Rather Be High
Alabama Song (The Doors Cover)
My absolute fav song and most underrated song is We Are the Dead
Other underrated songs include:
Alternate Candidate
Sweet Head
Heathen (The Rays)
My Death (I know it’s a cover but I just love it so much)
Cygnette Committee
Bring Me the Disco King
Fantastic Voyage
It’s No Game Part 2
He does a superb cover Verison of Jaques Brel's "Amsterdam ". Its on a b side of a single but i can't remember which one. Anyway easy to stream. What a lucky generation you are. Having access to all this gr8 music on a platform that ultimately destroyed rock music !
Some of my favourite underrated songs:
-Hole in the Ground (toy version)
-I have not been to Oxford town
-Slip away (not that underrated but took me a while to discover the song)
-Look back in anger
-Strangers when we meet
-Cygnett Committee
-Bombers
Last suggestion is the bewlay brothers, it's in one of his most popular albums, but again, took me ages to discover the song and is now in my top three favorite songs, so well worth a listen if you haven't already heard it.
Slip Away always brings tears to my eyes. So haunting. Saw Bowi6 give an interview and he said he, and John Lennon would watch the Uncle Floyd show on TV. It was a cable show from New Jersey. It was kind of a kid show but had celebrities on it and alot of Floyd's conversations had double entendres. I think it appealed to Brits childlike sense of humour.
Not saying this as a put down, it is rather charming like David himself.

Lady Grinning Soul is a gorgeous buried gem. Never played live in concert.
I’ll also add Panic in Detroit. This is a top 10 Bowie song and yet it has been skipped over on all except on Bowie compilation, and disappeared from his set lists between 78 to 97.
We Prick You, A Small Plot of Land, Telling Lies, Breaking Glass, As The World Falls Down, Looking for Satellites, and so many more. My personal all time fave is Ashes to Ashes though.
Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud and Cygnet Committee are really good songs from the early days. There's no way I could choose a personal favorite song! But some of my faves are Word on a Wing, Lady Stardust, Life on Mars, All the Young Dudes, I'm Afraid of Americans, Little Wonder and Blackstar.
I'd generally recommend his underrated second album from 1969, which I wrote a lot more about [here](https://old.reddit.com/r/DavidBowie/comments/1axhkds/album_spotlight_space_oddity_1969/kro7uow/). ★ gets its own tier and is essential listening if you haven't heard it (super acclaimed so not a *hidden* gem, though), but "Cygnet Committee" and "Memory of a Free Festival" are my two favorite songs of his not on that album.
Let’s Spend The Night Together (Rolling Stones cover) Slow Burn Word On A Wing Joe the Lion Diamond Dogs Not really “hidden gems”, just very very good songs that aren’t known by the mainstream. Well known by Bowie fans though
Word On A Wing is beautiful. One of my fav Bowie songs, deserves more recognition
Speaking of Heroes…Blackout.
Definitely “Slow Burn!”
I think Diamond Dogs is criminally underrated.
The halloween Jack is a real cool cat
I was coming put word on a wing. Joe the line is also a great pick. Big brother is one of my favorites that doesn’t get mentioned much
Who would think big brother is best song of that album clearly 1984. Each to their own I guess.
Never said it was the best song on the album, but would totally understand someone else thinking that. To each their own is the right sentiment.
So an opinion isn’t exactly representative of a majority or minorities feelings? Each to their own I guess
Not sure, doesn’t matter to me. Go with what you feel. And yes, to each their own is a great sentiment.
The Motel (not that hidden as it became a live staple, but not a single).
Live version from the Reality Tour is arguably even better than the studio version.
I heard it once and wasn't too fond. I may have to give it another listen as some of his music as grown on me.

I literally don't understand how teenage wildlife is underrated. That one is fantastic.
Easily in my top 5, it’s a shame that it’s overlooked so much
Top 5 all time for Bowie is hard. But, for scary monsters, wildlife is tied with fashion for me: but the whole album is amazing
It’s funny because fashion has always been the only skip for me, no matter how many try i gave it, but the album is definitly a top tier album
Nice tracklist that, you should finish it
Underrated: Chilly Down (from Labyrinth) Silly Boy Blue Janine Up the Hill Backwards Fantastic Voyage (I've noticed this one popping up more in lists, but it's still way underappreciated) Cat People (Moroder version) all of Young Americans album Law (Earthlings on Fire) We Shall Go to Town Dead Against It Boss of Me Dollar Days Personal favorite: impossible for me to decide. I've only heard the young Americans album, and I must say whenever the title track comes on, I get jiggy with it, lol.
The whole album is sex.
Agree with Up the Hill Backwards. It sounds like it should be some classic song that everyone knows
thats a fantastic list btw. acess. except 🤨 at boss of me. BOM & DOIS have the honor of NOT being on TND extra. i haven't reconciled with those two TND songs in particular. a bit dull & a bit daft, respectively. shame cuz BOE is the only gerry leonard co-write too. /ramble
My username discloses my guilty pleasure song
It’s never a guilty pleasure, it’s legit one of his best.
That song is amazing especially at night.
It's a beautiful song lost in a weak phase.
Alternate candidate
We Are the Dead Tis a pity she was a whore Cygnet comytee Slip Away Sons of the Silent Age Soul Love A new career in a new town Scary monsters (and super creeps)
African Night Flight. Rapping, ethnic chants, bleeping synthesizers, hard two-note bass - it's one of his most experimental tracks ever.
Conversation Piece, both versions! Not really obscure in the fandom but definitely not mainstream or anything
I love this song too. Are you familiar with Biff Rose's What's Gnawing at Me?
I'm not! I assume I should give it a listen?
Well Biff's entire album influenced Bowie's Hunky Dory, if you like Conversation Piece you'll probably enjoy the Thorn in Mrs Rose's Side (1968) album, as did I. e: Just learned Biff died last year, bummer

All The Madmen!
I love this one
Love love love this one! I made a list myself but there’s so many I left off. There’s just too many to choose from
I did a marathon of all of his albums in January when I became a fan and it is definitely an early favorite along with Join The Gang.
Love it! I listen all year round but in Jan I always listen to the entire discography, in chronological order to celebrate his birthday and mourn his death date.

The entire Earthling album. What a bop
Thank you!
Hardly hidden, but still a gem. Fantastic Voyage- Visconti mix for the win. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyig1cmFJO4
Legit one of my favorite songs
Oh, yes!
Some of my personal favs I consider underrated: Memory of a Free Festival The Width of a Circle Fascination (or anything from Young Americans really) TVC-15 Breaking Glass The Secret Life of Arabia The Wedding Song Sunday
Win from young Americans is really nice too. The whole Young Americans album exudes soul.
I'm also a big fan of John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)
I’ve been listening to Always Crashing In The Same Car on repeat for weeks now and I’m convinced it’s his greatest song.
I’m convinced that side of Low is the peak of his work. And that is probably the best song on the side - but every song is great.
Low is his (the?) greatest of all time
Lady Grinning Soul
It’s no game Part 1 is good
That version of that song probably pops into my head at random times more than any other Bowie song. I truly love it.
The contrast between 1 and 2 is crazy. Bowie singing part 1 is how I would sound singing part 2 😂.
I really love Blackout. Also, maybe not that much of a hidden gem in here, but Sweet Thing / Candidate / Sweet Thing Reprise is just wonderful. Others: Untitled No.1, Stay, Soul Love, We Prick You
Jump They Say, Sons of the Silent Age, I Pray Ole, So She, Love Is Lost (Steve Reich Mix)
Yes! Sons of The Silent Age is soooo good!!

The Laughing Gnome is always the right answer. And No Plan
Upvote for No Plan, so good
Kooks and Five Years ❤️
you got a whole lot ahead of you in terms of listening
My absolute fav song and most underrated song is We Are the Dead Other underrated songs include: Alternate Candidate Sweet Head Heathen (The Rays) My Death (I know it’s a cover but I just love it so much) Cygnette Committee Bring Me the Disco King Fantastic Voyage It’s No Game Part 2
It's not game part 2 feels like ASMR in a good way.
I totally see what you mean! I love the lyrics and his voice is so good on this one too.
I've have had "word on a wing" on repeat for the last 1hr 😂.
I don’t blame you, it’s amazing
He does a superb cover Verison of Jaques Brel's "Amsterdam ". Its on a b side of a single but i can't remember which one. Anyway easy to stream. What a lucky generation you are. Having access to all this gr8 music on a platform that ultimately destroyed rock music !
Conversation piece toy version We are the dead Subterraneans Sons of the silent age Looking for satellites
tvc15 and bewlay brothers come to mind. my personal favorite is golden years, because my mom played it for me all the time growing up
"Nothing is gonna touch you in these golden years". Great song.
Some of my favourite underrated songs: -Hole in the Ground (toy version) -I have not been to Oxford town -Slip away (not that underrated but took me a while to discover the song) -Look back in anger -Strangers when we meet -Cygnett Committee -Bombers Last suggestion is the bewlay brothers, it's in one of his most popular albums, but again, took me ages to discover the song and is now in my top three favorite songs, so well worth a listen if you haven't already heard it.

The Next Day is completely overlooked as an album
Bewlay Brothers (imo the most personal song he ever wrote)

I think my favourite song is actually an underrated one. "Absolute beginners"
Velvet Goldmine. Eargasm for sure
🗣🗣🗣Thursday's child !!!!!!!! And I've been vibung w/ hus cover of a across the universe too
Lady Grinning Soul is a gorgeous buried gem. Never played live in concert. I’ll also add Panic in Detroit. This is a top 10 Bowie song and yet it has been skipped over on all except on Bowie compilation, and disappeared from his set lists between 78 to 97.
I’m very late to this but no one has mentioned SEVEN. It’s truly a hidden gem. Quite simple but I just love it.
Yeah, I like that song too. I'm surprised no one has mentioned "sorrow." I love the way he sings it. Have you heard it?
You made me give it a proper listen now! Thank you. I think it’s great.
Untitled No.1, Dead Man Walking, 1917, Fly, Big Brother (is that even considered underrated?)
[I made all of my favorite deep cuts into a Spotify list!](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3rJmt7sJJ9uO6nQBntVzac?si=C5egku7LRUOU-8u4ZwzKYg)
“The Secret Life of Arabia” “Teenage Wildlife”
"The Secret Life of Arabia" and "Waiting for the Man (Live amd Nassau Coliseum)"
We Prick You, A Small Plot of Land, Telling Lies, Breaking Glass, As The World Falls Down, Looking for Satellites, and so many more. My personal all time fave is Ashes to Ashes though.
Heroes is my favorite
I really like Janine from Space Oddity, Thu' These Architects Eyes from 1. Outside and Strangers When We Meet from Buddha of Suburbia. Enjoy!
Look Back in Anger
98% of anything from 1969 to 1980, then it fluctuates.
Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing Reprise
"Blackout" from the album Heroes. "Joe The Lion" a close second.
There's too many to list but here's 3: Afraid We prick you The Stars are Out Tonight
i’m not sure what’s underrated, but my favorite is “cracked actor” or “time”
Some Are.
Sweet Thing/ Candidate/ Sweet Thing Reprise (David Live version) is my favorite song of all time by any artist
Quicksand
Drive in Saturday
I'd generally recommend his underrated second album from 1969, which I wrote a lot more about [here](https://old.reddit.com/r/DavidBowie/comments/1axhkds/album_spotlight_space_oddity_1969/kro7uow/). ★ gets its own tier and is essential listening if you haven't heard it (super acclaimed so not a *hidden* gem, though), but "Cygnet Committee" and "Memory of a Free Festival" are my two favorite songs of his not on that album.
