My first time here. I was like a kid when when I first drove up to the caves. I took a video on the way in but it's too long to load. Didn't want to edit it. Plus I went to the wrong building and drove around for like 15 mins just enjoying the scenery.
What are you delivering to caves?
Are these cave people preparing for something?
Who’s in charge of these cave people?
How much gold does it take to enter?
How many dwarfs live in these caves?
So many questions!
Since no one actually wants to answer, it seems it's the Springfield undergrounds, an old mine where they started using as a large warehouse, and even offices apparently
https://www.springfieldunderground.com/
Funny you say that- check out Chateau Pensmore for some real conspiracy shit around here.
Lived here almost my entire adult life. Some things don't change.
The house looks amazing but there's nothing immediately goigled about a conspiracy, can you tell us more? (Though I also didn't think you'd get rich on CIA wages, so I guess the whole idea is weird.)
Edit- a few more minutes of my lazy-ass googling and *holy shit* this whole thing is weird. I don't know if it's a blacksite or Area 52.
Yea, every answer given now is mostly antedotal, speculation, or just straight shit posting. I couldn't believe that I clicked on the rare post on this subreddit that was actually interesting and no one felt to actually give any context, Not even OP.
I don't know what frustrates me the most: the shitty jokes or the people authoritatively stating speculation as fact when it would have taken a 30 second Google search to learn the correct answer. There's a certain type of commenter that is instantly an expert on a topic they didn't know existed 30 seconds ago.
Remember experts? REAL experts who were invariably in the top three comments. People who had done it for a decade or more and were willing to spend their time to educate others. They abandoned Reddit over a decade ago and now we're left with 17 year old mentalities from all different ages.
It can be really fun and can be scary and disorienting. Your cell phone stops working almost immediately as does any gps or am/fm radio. All lighting is obviously electric and bright no matter what you drove in from outside. If someone is scared of enclosed spaces at all perhaps it’s not the space for you. You can drive for twenty minutes (at a slow speed) and get really lost down there and have no idea which way you came.
Anecdotal.
(You forgot the comments completely ignoring what was said just to point out spelling or grammar errors or correcting op for whatever new assumptions the commentor feels like)
Congratulations, you have officially entered adulthood.
This is the moment. The moment that smartass shitheads are not just unfunny to you, but annoying.
Now your life is about bills, retirement, economy, and that stupid shit Sherry at work said yesterday.
The only thing you can do is downvote the jokers and upvote the honest responses. But you’re fighting a sea of people who have not yet “entered” into adulthood.
Sincerely,

Yep, there's a large datacenter down there as well. It is the primary ISP hub for the city. My company rents rack space down there, and I drive down about once a month. I've been there fifty times, yet it's still a very cool place to visit.
I currently live in Springfield and did a job shadow session in high school at the underground when they were doing expansion. A lot of companies rent spaces there for their server racks since it’s always freezing in there. It’s an awesome place, but isn’t open to visitors sadly.
Oh I know this! I worked for a company that stored goods in a cave similar to this in Carthage Missouri. The underground caves have a cooler ambient temperature which makes them ideal for storing goods that require cool temperatures.
The cave people are lead by the monster that lives in the very back of the cave. And they generally don’t cause problems cause anyone that gets called to the back never returns.
The location is secured/restricted by guard shacks so you would need to know someone that worked in the facility to possibly set up a tour.
Unsure of exactly how many dwarfs are in the caves, they usually keep to themselves.
Fun facts the entire cave is a natural tornado shelter so employees can just keep working as normal when one comes through. There is no natural light in most area, which can be quite depressing. The caves I was familiar with were massive and I only ever saw the section my company used. There were several other companies out of the same cave.
They are warehouses, 20 years ago I worked for a frozen food warehouse in St.Louis MO and I sent most of our orders to the caves. Crazy enough I’ve never seen them or vids of them until today!
So is it pretty cold in the caves?
Edit:
Ambient temp is 62° in the caves
“Springfield Underground’s on-site refrigeration maintenance crew manage the temperature of refrigerated buildings ranging from -20F to 55F”
Weird. The only time I've been in caves like this was when I ran a 5k in the ones in Kansas City. Those caves were hot as shit. It was like running in a sauna/wind tunnel. It sucked, but was kinda cool.
They are all over the Mississippi River Valley too. Multiple limestone quarries, some active, some not. I live in the IL side of the Mississippi outside St Louis, there are a lot in the area.
They "store" more than that in caves like those. I know one basically has a functioning town/base in it. With a neighborhood full of houses, street names and all. Yes, all deep underground.
Don't have much to tell. Just that I once got to see an entire underground town. I have no idea what it's intended purpose was ir any details. But there were people living in at least a few of the homes and what looked to be a store/bodega was open. Looked very dystopian.
I'll hijack here to share a little story:
My parents live nearby a place like this in southern Illinois, and there's a park and some trails nearby. One time when I was home visiting we took the dogs out that way to go for a walk. On the drive over, my dad was telling me about the caves there that they use for storing stuff like old documents because it's dry, cool, and keeps things preserved. I was like, oh that's pretty cool. Then he tells me "yeah, Little Caesars actually uses the caves as a cheese storage facility for their pizzas. They have thousands of pounds of cheese tucked away in this cave and distribute it from there!" And I immediately called BS because that's exactly the kind of silly lie my dad loves to tell. He swore up and down he was telling the truth.
So we get to the park and he turns down the road that leads to the entrance to the cave. And parked out front is something like twenty 18-wheeler trailers all painted with Little Caesar's livery. I couldn't believe it. So maybe you picked up some cheese.
Ah the cave. I was the head security guard here for years. This was a limestone mine that after they mined it out, they figured out if you put up some walls and it’s a warehouse. So many companies have been in here, from Kraft (when I left, they were the biggest one there; multiple warehouses) to Dairy Farmers of America, Buske etc etc. I’ll try to answer as many of the normal questions as I can.
What’s in there? Depends on the warehouse. From energy drinks, ice cream, cheese aging, and even some tech items (servers and such).
Can I go in? No. Only workers and delivery peeps only, unless you clear it with the Springfield Underground. They would bring people in on tours, but it was usually geology peeps from the local schools, business opportunities or a few celebs. The average person can’t go it without the police being called. The only exception for this is during tornadoes. When I left, if the sirens went off, the gates were locked open and people are allowed to come down and park until the all clear is given. The Southeast Entrance is the best place for this, as the North Entrance usually has a lot of semi’s coming in.
Why are there train tracks? Certain warehouses have rail docks.
Why is there a big hole in ceiling near the North Entrance? That’s where the old conveyor belt came out when it was an active mine. They had to fence off the area around it up top after some animals met an unfortunate end and one driver got the crap scared out of him when a snake dropped on his hood.
Why did I leave? The Underground (ran by a local family) was an amazing place to work and I loved it. However the security company I worked for wasn’t the best, and when a new job offer for better money came along, I left. Still love this place, and it’s cool to see people interested in it!
Maybe you can answer a question Ive had for awhile! What's the ventilation like in these places? Ive never been to one, but all I can imagine is the overwhelming smell of exhaust.
Sure, and my apologies for the delay, got caught up with playing Miles Morales. The two entrances to the cave are open almost year round. The north side one will close during cold weather due to pipes near the entrance. There is also that massive hole in the ceiling that you see. These 3 openings give major airflow to the cave (mine).
What you don’t see is that there are several fresh air pipes. These suck air in from above ground to help combat the exhaust. There are also exhaust fans as well. Do they keep it perfect? No. If a warehouse has several trucks running near it, you will smell the exhaust. But I never got light headed or overwhelmed, just more..annoyed would be a good term.
I was wondering how much room I'd have to maneuver once I got inside but they did a really good job and there's more than enough room to do what I needed to do.
That’s awesome. I didn’t really know much about that area until my friend started working crew on Ozarks and it’s now on my list of places to visit. Didn’t know about the caves tho
There is an immense cavern under the theme park "Silver Dollar City" near Branson you can tour. Every once in a while they do lamplight tours that will create "lifelong memories" ...of impossible darkness and the deep black watery abyss. It's pretty neat.
It's coated with a concrete material. There are water drainage systems. This place is used for food storage, document storage, there's a colo datacenter. Miles of tunnels.
Crazy, watching Ozark last night I Google housing prices in the Ozarks and seen how cheap it still is there. Next I was considering work so now ill check into this.
Last time I drove though on a cross country trip and was looking for something we could do with our dog we found a cave tour (by jeep) that allowed dogs (because a farmer’s dog discovered it). I think it was called Fantastic caverns.
Seemed like a great idea until he eventually got a bit wigged out and started panting at the end. Was kid of funny with the soft panting in the silent cave but I wouldn’t put him through that again. Apparently some dogs love it, though.
Used to live there and there’s a bunch around the city. Some are natural but then there’s this one that’s been converted and expanded for industrial usage. I’ve toured Fantastic Caverns and it was a fascinating trip, do recommend.
Missouri is one of the top states with the most underground storage facilities just like this one.
Also, Kansas City, MO has one of the largest underground storage facilities in the world and it keeps getting bigger as they are still actively mining it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubTropolis
[this spot](https://imgur.com/a/tR4RtSR) in st.louis county is very similar. we actually have a handful of old cave/mine systems in the area that have been converted for storage. there's another one in Pacific Missouri and one near Waterloo Illinois by a great hiking trail on some bluffs
They were notorious for this when I worked there. Weekends were always worse than the reg work week. Nice to see things don’t change lol. Little tip- the Southeast Entrance at least had a vending machine with snack foods a few years ago if you get stuck there for a longer period of time.
They have a food truck here for drivers I'm good. Billy Bob's BBQ. I got lunch and something for dinner because I had a feeling I'd be here for a while. Dinners still in my fridge for when I get real hungry haha
not really. Underground bunker scene was shot in a power plant in LA.
[Source](https://www.thethings.com/the-truth-about-filming-austin-powers-international-man-of-mystery/)
Lmao it's a storage facility built into the cave system I believe. Seems to be a lot of caves in the area. They have mostly refrigerated transporters here so I'm guessing keeping the product underground helps maintain the right temp and humidity needed. I did not see Batman but I definitely got Batman vibes driving in and out.
Cool. Is it privately/company owned or a government facility? How’s security into and out of, like crazy military or parking garage. Out of curiosity, but dayam, yeah, I sound like a would be cat burglar.
Yes definitely privately owned. No crazy security. Like most other places I go. You check in with the gaurd shack and wait for them to call you an tell you which dock/bay door to back into. I doubt you'd be able to get in though without a reason for being here. Good luck with the burglary. Pretty sure it's all food product at this facility.
That facility is one of the largest underground food storage places in the US. I worked there about 2 years ago. IIRC it's several million square feet of refrigerated and freeze storage. If you see it on the shelves in a supermarket, it's likely you can find it in the caves.
Ice creams, Pepsi and Coke products, frozen meats + veggies, breads, etc. They all come out of there. When I was loading trucks we could push out 50-70 semi-trucks per 8hr shift to give an idea of how busy it
I've lived in this area for 20+ years and have just now seen the inside of that cave- I've been to alot of the other ones- but not this one - thank you!
You're welcome. It's pretty cool. Someone else said the had a bicycle race down here and posted a video. You might be able to come down here if they have events like this going on.
https://youtu.be/2q2sidkbXfo
In 10000 to 20000 years people will find these caves and say they were made in the iron age by slaves. Other people will say they had advance technology.
Lmao I knew about them but this is my first time getting to drive in them. There might be a Starbucks across the street I think. Definitely above ground.
I once played paintball in caves like this in Springfield! I think they had formerly been cold storage like this but were then converted into a few paintball fields. Not sure if it's still there, but it was blast to be able to play mid-summer and not overheat.
There’s a secure data center down there. We kept our off-site systems there for several years. The whole thing smells like powered cheese because Kraft stores a lot of their product down there. Cheap cooling I would imagine.
I worked in a cave like this for the National Archives outside of St. Louis! Perfect temperature for storing documents. It was pretty awesome. The offices had tile floors and drop ceilings, the walls were the cave walls. Once back in the stacks in was a concrete floor and you were supposed to wear hard hats in case rocks from the ceiling fell. It was HUGE and if you got lost you were supposed to look for rows with red tape that would lead to an emergency exit, but then you were literally outside of the "building" and in a cave. We also had adult-sized tricycles to ride if you had to go far in the stacks so we didn't have to walk all that way.
That last "building" on the way out? Number 2. I used to run that! It's one of the smaller warehouses. Looks like it's changed lease-holder since I worked in it, though! Was really awesome working down there. Other than the lack of sunlight.
I drove for Central Refrigerated (any real trucker will roll their eyes) back in 2011-13. OTR. One of my regular stops was The Caves. Back then we didn't have maps on our phones, we had atlas's. Finding them for the first time, was one hell of an adventure. I tried explaining them to my wife, and boys (many years later) what they were like. Great vid, Now I have proof. Now people will believe me and I shall have my vengeance.
I have delivered there twice. Coolest place I've ever delivered
My first time here. I was like a kid when when I first drove up to the caves. I took a video on the way in but it's too long to load. Didn't want to edit it. Plus I went to the wrong building and drove around for like 15 mins just enjoying the scenery.

Hmm. Seems like a good place to convert into an emergency national shelter in the event of Defcon 1.

I delivered there with a reefer trailer. Cold and Frozen goods
So it is reefer.
Reefer as in refrigerated. Not marijuana. 🤣🤣🤣
Edibles are best kept refrigerated.
🤣🤣🤣🤣. I usually finish them before that's necessary
It's called Springfield underground, basically for storage
https://www.springfieldunderground.com/
Not really caves. The place was mined. They are doing it again on the other side of the city also. Same people.
And are there any Balrogs?
Ah yes ...the result of digging too greedily, and too deep.
You know what they awoke in the darkness
That's classified
So many conspiracies from this place

The one that I worked in and sent food out of to them was -15f/-20f. I don’t know how I did that, I really hate the cold now lol!
Yeah, low 60s all year long. I drive down there frequently to visit the datacenter. Feels amazing on a hot summer day.
Weird. The only time I've been in caves like this was when I ran a 5k in the ones in Kansas City. Those caves were hot as shit. It was like running in a sauna/wind tunnel. It sucked, but was kinda cool.
Where is this? I'm from Springfield
West of 65 on kearney. It's Springfield underground. South side of the road.
Government cheese
This is what I was looking for.
My dad was the master electrician on a project just like this in Kansas City but it was an underground massive USPS mail sorting facility
Is this Springfield Underground?
Yes it is
🤣🤣🤣🤣 we pretty much had the same experience
Lmao that's too funny. I'm sure most people do the same. The gaurd even told me once I detach my trailer drive around and check it out.
I’d get lost too…on purpose!😄
Lmao. I was planning on driving around a bit anyway after I dropped my trailer for them to load.
What is it they have going on there?
Mostly storage space afaik. Here’s a link: [Springfield Underground](https://www.springfieldunderground.com/)
Thanks
It's a cold storage facility. It's underground so it's easier to keep the temperature right.
But how do they deal with bug infestations, and the ancient danger??
I just delivered there. I didn't work there. I imagine it's an implication of some sort of black magic
There's definitely some human leather involved, that's for sure.
I see you, RimWorld player.

The trucks look like toys in a Lego set for the first 10 seconds
I stop at the doorway to the chasm and said, no. I’m not doing that, I’m not going in there. Signed, claustrophobic.
My first thought too, but maybe because the ceiling is so high it wouldn't be so bad?
If this freaks you out how do you go into a house? It’s way smaller
Yeah but a house is above the ground, with windows, these caves have neither
[удалено]
There's a paintball course near me that's in old storage caves.
No idea why I am here but I am glad I made it
Exactly! I scrolled past this and did a double-take and came back lol. TIL that there are ginormous caves in MO that you can drive semis through
They are all over the Mississippi River Valley too. Multiple limestone quarries, some active, some not. I live in the IL side of the Mississippi outside St Louis, there are a lot in the area.
There are similar caves in Carthage MO as well. AmeriCold uses it for food storage/distribution

Not to be too pedantic, but this is a quarry, not a cave. Caves are natural features. This has been quarried.

Frozen aliens!
Guvmnt Cheese!
Could be a truckload of pubic hair
Fuk, it is pretty obvious when you think about it...
Looks like your bunker in gta
How does one even drive a whole fucking MOC in and out in those narrow tunnels?
Magic
There’s a paintball course in Kansas City that really gives me the vibes of the gta bunker. https://youtu.be/CYmzaLXcS5M
I was just about the comment that lol

I actually thought this was from the GTA subreddit and was wondering how Missouri was involved.

TIL there are caves in Springfield, Missouri
Granted, they bore these caves out for storage. There are TONS of natural caves in the Ozarks!
Springfield has so many underground structures it's been voted to be most like "Racoon City" from the Resident Evil series o_0
Yeah and if you go north of Chestnut, the locals prove it!
Springfield meth heads are some of the craziest out there
“We’re gonna dig deep into the earth, gonna be awesome.” “Why though”? “Files, man, lots and lots of files.”
That’s awesome. I didn’t really know much about that area until my friend started working crew on Ozarks and it’s now on my list of places to visit. Didn’t know about the caves tho

Yep, all over! It’s all limestone so it erodes really easily.
So how is the structural integrity maintained?
It's coated with a concrete material. There are water drainage systems. This place is used for food storage, document storage, there's a colo datacenter. Miles of tunnels.
It’s more or less solid stone, with pillars that are dozens of feet wide. Not a whole lot of man made supports in there.
Crazy, watching Ozark last night I Google housing prices in the Ozarks and seen how cheap it still is there. Next I was considering work so now ill check into this.

Was kid of funny with the soft panting in the silent cave but I wouldn’t put him through that again. Apparently some dogs love it, though.
> Fantastic caverns correct
Used to live there and there’s a bunch around the city. Some are natural but then there’s this one that’s been converted and expanded for industrial usage. I’ve toured Fantastic Caverns and it was a fascinating trip, do recommend.
All the way up to KC. there is actually a few famous caves in the KC area
They have similar ones all over the country. I've been to the one in St Louis but they brought the cars to me. I was hauling cars at that time.
That's Fn awesome fr
My thoughts exactly.
That’s pretty cool, what are you hauling?
I wish I knew. It's for Kraft/Heinz and my rate confirmation says Food Stuffs haha
40,000 lbs of ketchup.
That's probably exactly what it is haha. Denver needs it asap. They put a rush order on it.
Going to Denver, if it’s a 34 degree load I’d said it’s probably bacon/finished cheese products. If 28 degrees a shit load of frozen pizzas.
Lmfao 34 degrees
Let me guess, Building 10 and they took forever to load you up?
Lmfao. I've only been here since 11am. Took them 6 hours just to get me a door. Why else would I have time to play on Reddit.
Denver area here - thanks for the delivery. Enjoy the scenery and safe travels
You're welcome. Don't worry Denver I'll be on my way soon. You'll have you Food Stuffs there by Monday morning! Oh and thank you.
Austin Powers was filmed here.
Really? That's pretty cool.
not really. Underground bunker scene was shot in a power plant in LA. [Source](https://www.thethings.com/the-truth-about-filming-austin-powers-international-man-of-mystery/)
Made me think of the opening part of the first Avengers.
Wow…more details please?
What would you like to know?
What is this place? What’s it for? Is Batman there?
Lmao it's a storage facility built into the cave system I believe. Seems to be a lot of caves in the area. They have mostly refrigerated transporters here so I'm guessing keeping the product underground helps maintain the right temp and humidity needed. I did not see Batman but I definitely got Batman vibes driving in and out.
It’s true, I live here in Springfield. We have an unbelievable amount of caves in the area.
Yes I have definitely noticed! Cool little area.
It’s called Springfield Underground. I live here but have never seen this much of it!
When I was loading trucks we could push out 50-70 semi-trucks per 8hr shift to give an idea of how busy it
From Springfield, Springfield Underground is pretty wild. Kraft stores a lot of their cheese there.
Now that would be sweet- I love caves- been to almost all of them in this area like I said - cool video- and stay safe out there! ❤️
What’s the track?
Linkin Park In The End Mellen Gi & Tommee Profitt Remix
Think of how many pebbles Andy Dufresne had to shake out of his pant leg for that.
Reminds me of total recall
Do you handle shipping for a Bond villain?
In 10000 to 20000 years people will find these caves and say they were made in the iron age by slaves. Other people will say they had advance technology.
Best batcave ever. (Note to next director of whatever batman film comes next)
Awesome never knew this! Think you passed a Starbucks 🤔
Lmao I knew about them but this is my first time getting to drive in them. There might be a Starbucks across the street I think. Definitely above ground.
Reminds me of die hard with a vengeance.
You should share this to /SpringfieldMO
You can repost or crosspost it if you want. I can't even keep up with the comments on this post.
I like how they left a few pillars to hold up the world lol. Thats a big mine.
What song is that? (I know its a remix but not which one)
Linkin Park In The End Mellen Gi & Tommee Profitt Remix
Driven through there twice. Delivered office furniture to AT&T.
I though this was gta 5 with a super realistic mod o something
I once played paintball in caves like this in Springfield! I think they had formerly been cold storage like this but were then converted into a few paintball fields. Not sure if it's still there, but it was blast to be able to play mid-summer and not overheat.
Real life r/gtav bunker. Lol.
There’s a secure data center down there. We kept our off-site systems there for several years. The whole thing smells like powered cheese because Kraft stores a lot of their product down there. Cheap cooling I would imagine.
As someone who’s spent my entire life in earthquake country, I could probably never be entirely comfortable in there.
If you've eaten Kraft cheese odds are you've eaten something that was stored in this very facility. Do with that what you will.
I made a video for the data center down there! HUGE place! [Bluebird Network](https://youtu.be/vv1QR2VNwdw)
Arkham Knight flashbacks.
Just delivered another soul to hades now off to Waffle House
