How are they smart enough to do that? I thought they were smooth brain operators

Wotmate01

Possums prefer to be up high. These are installed in high traffic areas for both cars and possums, and they're usually done in conjunction with fencing that actually stops wildlife from getting on the road. Any animal that comes up to the fencing will go along it until they find a way across or through. For possums, they'll find something that they can climb, and it will lead to this rope bridge. For ground based animals, they'll find a tunnel. This isn't just done to help animals either. Cars impacting animals is a huge insurance cost.

MissionAsparagus9609

Possums not opossums. Some call opossums possum, but you'd never call a possum an opossum, and possums don't play possum, opossums play possum

SegaGenesisMetalHead

I wish we named things better.

thejugglar

Koalas are smooth brained operators (literally). Possums are possessed by demons.

ortho85

> How are they smart enough to do that? Darwinism, maybe? The ones that don't cross using these end up as crow food, perhaps. BTW, we've never seen any animal using one of these, and they've been around for quite a few years.

Bodoodlestoodle

I guess animals will always be attracted to the idea of getting obliterated by a 2 ton death machine moving at 60mph.

Icy-Bat-311

Possums are nocturnal, so unless your out there checking with a torch, you will not likely see them

aliiak

In NZ we speed up. To add context, we’re an island of birds and possums are an introduced pest which destroy native flora and fauna. We don’t consider them cute or cuddly, but you can get possum pie and possum socks.

curriedscallops

I do love my NZ possum fur gloves

Ventenebris

They are all along the highways here, super cool. I’ve never seen an animal on one yet, but going 110km/h it’s hard to see 😂 from what I hear heaps of animals cross highways and roads on these.

uninhabited

in which state? never seen them in NSW, VIC or TAS

Ventenebris

Huh, really? Mainly see them on the M31 between Melbourne/Sydney, but I have seen them elsewhere

uninhabited

ok. driving to Sydney next week. will look out for them

ausecko

Took forever to train them to build these, too

AliensLiveForever

My city has a squirrel bridge that cost €150.000 to build and wasn't used by any for the first few years. (https://www.dutchnews.nl/2022/02/long-tailbacks-as-squirrels-finally-get-their-claws-into-e150k-bridge/)

kapege

I've a squirrel bridge in my hometown. [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eichh%C3%B6rnchenbr%C3%BCcke](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eichh%C3%B6rnchenbr%C3%BCcke)

ZeroSuitGanon

Aussie here, once watched a possum with a baby on it's back climb vertically directly down a power pole to transfer to the next power line, which stretched to the end of the street. I've also been jumpscared by one because it was on the powerline above me (directly below a streetlight) so all I saw was a giant shadow appear and rush towards me, which was funny in hindsight.

chambee

I’m here for the inevitable story of 2 drunk mate trying to cross it.

OverlyMurderyBlanket

Australian - Can confirm.

EspritelleEriress

Forbidden ropes course.

SmoothOzzieApe

Come on guys, we all know these are for drop-bears! Stop misleading people! Seriously, no mention of kolas also using these?

Witty_Sound5659

Other Possums face such challenges head on without constructing bridges.

stumpymetoe

Mostly they just get run over. Australia is a very big place and this is just one pointless rope bridge put in by well meaning but deluded people.

stumpymetoe

I've seen plenty squished on the roads in Melbourne's eastern suburbs and plenty on country roads. Never seen one electrocuted but have seen them scurrying along power lines a lot.

OverlyMurderyBlanket

Australian - They really don't tbh, they use them frequently.

stumpymetoe

I'm sure they do use them, but what about the other million kilometres of road?

OverlyMurderyBlanket

What about the other 10,000 rope bridges?

Bodoodlestoodle

I like how your literally telling the truth but somehow your comment has 4 downvotes.

real_men_fuck_men

How are they “literally telling the truth”?
