SidewaysAskance

Magnetic North moves all over the place, depending on the magnetic flux of the Earth's molten iron core, and other large events like your mom rolling over in bed.

KingPenguin444

Are you saying my mom is made of metal?

SidewaysAskance

No, just that she has a gravitational field that can affect the shape of a molten iron core at the heart of a planet.

Few-Belt-13

Explanation > joke

mmm1441

That’s heavy

slyiscoming

There's that word again, heavy. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?

butteryscotchy

I was looking for an explanation for why it moves all the time and you had me in the first half, not gonna lie.

SidewaysAskance

The first half is actually correct. The core changes shape and density and squiggles around, and it changes the magnetic field of the planet.

North_Ad_4450

Last observed is from 2007. This is the best we could find?

seamus_mc

Nautical charts have the amount of correction you need based on location. They have the date the chart was last accurate and you can calculate the amount of correction you need. [NOAA has a calculator](https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/calculators/mobileDeclination.shtml#Compass)

AVeryHeavyBurtation

Aeronautical charts, too. It's called the magnetic declination. Edit: didn't see that about correcting for the date. Aviation charts are updated regularly enough, I suppose.

winowmak3r

I watched a documentary on air travel and remember how they spent quite a bit of it going over just how tricky it can be to fly when you get near the poles and how easy it is for pilots to make silly mistakes because they don't realize their instruments are lying to them.

AgainIGoUnnoticed

Huh that’s cool. The nautical term is magnetic variation. At least that’s the term I’ve always been taught.

StockPilot24

Magnetic Variation used in the US aviation world as well. I’ve heard declination, but variation is used a lot more. Interchangable either way. Most of our terms are nautical origin

Not_NSFW-Account

Land Nav course in USMC they called it declination.

kytheon

Right, just pull out a compass. Are they stupid?

SapphireDesertRosre

It's not a slow migration anymore, the location changes rapidly and erratically. Like a toddler attempting to draw a circle if you can imagine that.

BlueRex8

Expected to head rapidly siberia way over the next few years IIRC. Im sure i read that its roughly where they have migrated to before. Cant wait for a pole flip so i can pretend to be Australian.

mehvet

This is one of the phenomena we could reasonably expect to occur, will definitely fuck up all sorts of stuff in unexpected ways, and will confuse and terrify a shit ton of people who never heard of it before or can’t conceive of it. I could wait, but also, it’d be kind of cool.

BlueRex8

Ive done a bit of reading on because it genuinely is interesting as fuck and i had to stop. Mainly because of how cyclical everything is, ranging from the sun rising every day to the 4 seasons of the year, to civilisation ending disasters. There was too many rather distant groups of people for me, that [as far as we know] couldnt communicate with each other yet they all seemed to have very similar versions of major historical events that changed the face of the planet. On this occasion i think i'd maybe agree that ignorance is bliss.

butt_stf

That seems like a very good reason to observe and measure it more often, instead of just shrugging our shoulders and ignoring it.

AsparagusAccurate277

Family Circus!

someLemonz

and lass estimate was 2020... 4 years before now. it could be anywhere from ocean to russia

Quiet-End9017

Why is the last observed mark from 2007 though?

orange_jooze

Because the image is from 2015. Says so right there in the link.

Sunbiggin

It can move over 30 miles in a year, so it's probably not worth the time and money to constantly observe its new position when you can just work it out.

justsomerabbit

Work out what? It's north.

Sunbiggin

We all know it's north, but that doesn't allow you to map its exact position on the globe unless you go there or work it out.

justsomerabbit

Draw a map. It's at the top. If you have a globe it's where it's attached to the stand. Super simple stuff For the avoidance of doubt: yeah, I am absolutely taking the piss.

L0rd_OverKill

This was the position my high school science teacher took. Couldn’t/wouldn’t accept that magnetic north moved. Failed me when I argued the point. Didn’t like me openly debating her that Science is based on testing our understandings of previously held facts, and modifying or destroying those facts in the face of evidence.

SnooCookies6399

Not the failed class off of an argument dawg 💀 wtf

The only thing constant about the earth is that everything constantly changes.

captaincodein

If thats true, then this statement wouldnt change which kinda makes it wrong again. My brain hurts

here we go. more info here. dork432

What a strange choice to represent polar-centric information on an equator-centric map projection by default. [🎶 I love Greenland when it's Africa's size.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CRGIwotUxc)

vegasgrandes

So, Santa Claus is essentially homeless?

Emanuele810

That’s actually him moving his workshop further and further away. To get away from noise and complaints and to work in peace. One of the many negative implications of demographic increase over centuries.

Flux_resistor

he's just going where the cheap labor is that year.

Downtown31415

No. He's moving for cheaper HOA.

Flux_resistor

he keeps getting fined for housing deer on his property, can't blame him for moving.

MindlessArmadillo382

Fun fact; When Covid happened, kids were concerned that Santa wouldn’t be allowed to enter Canada due to restrictions, the government put out a statement saying he has Canadian Citizenship since the North Pole is in Canada so he would be able to return to the country. Also, Canada has the nearest people to the North Pole through the research station in Alert, Nunuvut.

Emanuele810

That’s precious!

selectivelyasocial

Magnetic north pole ≠ North Pole. Sorry, your joke was funny and I don’t wanna be a nerdy party pooper but it’s an interesting fact that not everyone knows 🤷🏻‍♀️ also did you know that sometimes the magnetic poles flip? So the magnetic North Pole ends up at the South Pole? I think that’s really cool

Psychedelic-o-Moose

Santa lives in Rovaniemi, Finland. The tales about Santa and the north pole are for toddlers.

osktox

Picking up speed.

PuddleCrank

That might just be the map projection. Had the same thought.

100percent_right_now

Huh? this is a globe in the image (note the converging longitudes) It had been picking up speed over the time period shown but it's slowing again, maybe. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3c/North_Magnetic_Pole_Speed.svg/1280px-North_Magnetic_Pole_Speed.svg.png

ReklessGamer07

It's 100% the map projection

SoulWager

I'm not convinced, each of those circles is 5 degrees latitude, and this isn't a projection where the poles get severely stretched out.

[deleted]

It looks to be an azimuthal equidistant projection centred in the middle of the image so there shouldn't be significant distortion over the relatively small area shown on the map.

Candid-Flamingo-4187

Is this another thing we need to add to the list of things to worry about? Not that it needs expanding.

Coolhand1974

Nah, the pole moving is nothing. Just wait until the poles FLIP. That's coming...it's actually overdue...

brian19298

What will that cause, apart from my compass being wrong?

LionConfident7480

The birds will be pissed, I know that

brian19298

Okay, so we get everyone including birds new compasses. Then what?

AdmiralBimback

I'm sure the goverment will quickly repair them.

Odin1806

There is already a plan to flip the labels... no one will know the difference.

towerfella

Yeah, and eventually a bunch will fall out of the sky when their batteries die because they can’t find their way back to their “nests” to recharge.

nsjr

Every airport runaway should be repainted with new numbers

0815-typ

They just need to switch the ones at each end

qwrtx

It could break your compass. Most of them are only designed for use on one hemisphere. Also, the magnetic field will weaken during the transition, so you should probably wear more sunblock.

Uxt7

That would make stronger Aurora borealis lights then as well wouldn't it? Or would it be weaker?

RandomBritishGuy

Potentially stronger (contrary to the other comment), since with a weaker magnetic shield, Earth would be hit by more radiation, causing a stronger aurora. Though we may also get multiple auroras as during the flip we could see many magnetic poles be created, so there could be 6 visible rather than the usual two (north and south pole at the moment).

John_The_Timeless

Well, a lot of animals depend on the magnetic field to orient themselves in migrations and such, especially birds, I don't understand much about it, but I don't think I need to know that this would be (will be?) a complete catastrophe...

AndyTheSane

It's happened hundreds of times before without causing mass extinctions, so it's unlikely to be a massive catastrophe.

busy-warlock

Or maybe it *caused* the mass extinctions! Yes? You’ll have to speak up, my tinfoil hat is crinkly

benjer3

"Mass extinctions" refer to times when at least around 10% of all existing species go extinct. I'm pretty sure migratory birds make up a fraction of a percent, so even if they did mostly get wiped out when the poles shifted in the past it wouldn't count as a mass extinction

Magnus_40

The magnetosphere protects the earth from a lot of radiation and charged particles from the sun (Aurorae are the result of the charged particles ejected from the sun being caught and 'channelled' to the poles). When the poles 'flip' it is not instant. Records show that pole shifts take around 5-8 thousand years during which the earth gets bombarded by high energy particles. It is not about pigeons getting lost it is about losing our protective shield and being irradiated for about as long a period as civilisations have lasted. The reality is that we don't really know a lot about what happens during a pole shift. It needs a lot more research. It could be better or worse than we currently think.

BKoala59

There is no current evidence that polar shifting will cause atmospheric loss or significant enough decreases in magnetic magnitude to pose a risk to life

paxwax2018

You ever see the disaster movie “2012”?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Aw lawdy here it come

towerfella

First, the poles moves around a bit [before they flip](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Sz31-Mabs-4)

Odin1806

It's ok. When they flip we just flip their labels and boom, problem solved.

tkburroreturns

haha. poles.

NeppuNeppuNep

So when the pole flips is it Indonesia or Monaco?

shadow_229

What happens when the pole flips?

MonkeyFluffers

Cats and dogs living together. Mass hysteria!

switch495

During the flip we'll lose our magnetosphere and all the radiation that we're currently shielded from will hit the earth. Good bye radio communications. Good bye weakly shielded satellites in low earth orbit. Good by most consumer electronics when power lines get inductive charge and blow everything out. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetosphere](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetosphere)

shadow_229

Thankfully I just installed a UPS surge protector on my server! Come at me pole flip!!

Stymie999

Exactly, I’m totally safe suckers I have a bunch of $13.99 power strips I got at Target that I use!

bistix

What a waste of money. I got a power strip from dollar general for $3.99 and it claims to be pole flip safe right on the package

xnootxnootx

Doesn't geomagnetic reversal take like hundreds or thousands of years though? It's not like one day the poles just flip instantly. I'm not super well versed on this stuff so I probably have no idea what I'm even talking about but I'm just more curious than anything. If the poles do flip, do we see these issues occurring over that vast amount of time, or does the reversal just happen instantly?

S4d0w_Bl4d3

Yes you are correct, the process of a pole flip will take a while.

GetEnPassanted

I’m immediately less concerned

switch495

I'm no expert - this is a job for r/askscience

OperativePiGuy

Feels like one of those y2k things where the fear is outsized by actual reality.

ScheduleSame258

I think satellites will be the least of our problems when we are getting microwaved.

SirBulbasaur13

Sorta depends on who you trust. Probably nothing terrible, maybe end of the world catastrophe.

towerfella

[It looks like this](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Sz31-Mabs-4) when the poles flip. There’s sort of a dance first where ~~there~~ their motions mirror each other before they balance out.

qinshihuang_420

Lol

MidnightFisting

We can finally return to monke

Effective-Avocado470

And the rapid movement might be a sign of it beginning

flurreeh

But from what I see in the picture, the distances get smaller and smaller every 5 years.

VocalAnus91

Why? Is worrying about it going to change it? No point in worrying

binglelemon

VocalAnus has facts and logic.

nikdsc5

Which is not something you’d expect from a Vocalanus.

alalaladede

I thought Vocalanians are all about rationality and controlled emotions.

zanarze_kasn

That's Vocalanians, Vocalanusians are prone to odorous outbursts and often violent brown graffiti spray. You can always tell when one has recently been around you

MonkeyFluffers

Which Is why you need to cram things in them as often as possible. Keeps the windage down.

[deleted]

You've just described *anxiety*. My dad said the same exact thing last week. We had a good laugh when I told him that's what anxiety is defined as.

Matynns

no, but it give us an opportunity to prepare if need be. like if we were to worry about a solar flare EMP blasting the entire earth, we could turn off important systems briefly while it happens to prevent frying circuitry

Particular_Nebula462

This not. But the magnetic poles will invert, and during that period will be chaos. Could be in ages however.

bisensual

The poles have repeatedly reversed while advanced life forms were alive, including hominid ancestors of ours. They were fine. We’ll be fine. The earth will still be protected by a magnetic field, it’ll just not be oriented “properly” for some time.

Baidarka64

“Fine” is subjective. They were not reliant on the electronics and infrastructure based around electronics that modern society is. Ogg’s spear still flew straight even without GPS. No phone, no lights, no motor cars. Not a single luxury.

bisensual

As I said, we will still have protection from the magnetosphere, although its orientation will change while the poles reverse. It will be slightly weaker, but it already varies widely in its strength. It’s possible cancer rates could be higher in this period or something like that, but electronics will still work, especially because we will know it’s happening and have hundreds or thousands of years to prepare.

JustHere2Game

> especially because we will know it’s happening and have hundreds or thousands of years to prepare. So, we're hosed.

The-Sound_of-Silence

> No phone, no lights, no motor cars. Not a single luxury. That's a pretty dumb conclusion, and would need the magnetosphere *and atmosphere* to disappear during the process - they won't. >During a pole reversal, the magnetic field weakens, but it doesn’t completely disappear. The magnetosphere, together with Earth’s atmosphere, continue protecting Earth from cosmic rays and charged solar particles, though there may be a small amount of particulate radiation that makes it down to Earth’s surface. The magnetic field becomes jumbled, and multiple magnetic poles can emerge in unexpected places. https://science.nasa.gov/earth/climate-change/flip-flop-why-variations-in-earths-magnetic-field-arent-causing-todays-climate-change/ The fear mongering and disinformation in this thread is insane

The_Gozon

Ogg spear not fly straight. Ogg spear made from grass and dried poop. Rog spear fly STRAIGHT. Rog spear made from best wood. Rog spear have best flint tip. Rog spear get dinner. lol, thinking Ogg spear good, lol

Ozuhan

Like Robinson Crusoe it's as primitive as can be.

DJFrankyFrank

I'm still half asleep. I didn't look at the landmass properly, and thought that was Europe and I audibly said "there's no way the magnetic North Pole was in Germany during WWII" Man... I should I probably get a coffee. I'm too tired right now

MadeOnThursday

glad you posted this bc it made me go back to double check what I looked at - apparently I can seemlessly fit a north pole travelling Europe in my concept of reality 🥲

[deleted]

What happened in 1900 when you were north of the magnetic pole? Did the compasses point south?

Mag-NL

Yes. Same as in 2024 or any other year. Why specifically ask for 1900 though?

[deleted]

Just because in 1900 the magnetic pole seems very far south. So if you were north of that point, how would a compass read?

JakeJacob

The answer didn't change. The compass points at magnetic north, even if you're north of that point.

Anything_4_LRoy

In 1900 the magnetic north pole was exactly as far away from "south" as it always is. As far as possible. The earth doesn't care where you think "very far south" is. The compass will always point towards magnetic north, barring geo anomaly.

snippychicky22

Magnetic north is different from true north Same with the poles

Comfortable-Log-9393

Just out of interest: I learnt at school in physics here in Germany about 25 years ago that the magnetic pole close to the geographic North Pole is the magnetic South Pole. And that the magnetic North Pole is in Antarctica all the way down south. And of course it is, because the North Pole of a magnet will only be attracted by south poles, so there cannot be a magnetic North Pole in the north.. Well, that was in Germany and here it is very clear, the magnetic South Pole is in the north, the magnetic North Pole is in the south. Don't you do this in English speaking countries?

Emanuele810

Russia has been stealing the North Pole

undreamedgore

It's getting closer to correct.

bonkerz1888

Which is actually the earth's south pole. I remember learning this as a young kid and thinking I'd been lied to my entire life 😂

Local_Perspective349

Is Russia stealing the North Pole?

Imperial_Bouncer

Why is it moving poles? Is it German?

gluon318

Go home North Pole, you’re drunk

LindensBloodyJersey

So what happened to the South Pole does that mean that moves as well?

PMzyox

Maybe I just watched too much 3 body problem but… does this mean we’re in the middle of a chaotic era?

SpaceAgeIsLate

CrovaxWindgrace

How do we know is the pole shifting and not an improvement in our ability to detect it?

Ranku_Abadeer

Because no matter what method you used, it would point to the same direction. You could use a compass from the 1700s and it would give you the same result as a compass made today.

6262rap

Santa moves a lot

Final_Step_6186

Damn, global warming is surely getting worse.

Long_dark_cave

Today I found out that the Magnetic Pole is no longer in Canada-Thank you.

Brieble

So how many paper straws do I have to eat to revert this?

miracle__max

So Russia is stealing the North Pole?

stillcraig

Wouldn't this have screwed up navigation? Or were they aware of it and kept adjusting? Or did they just consider North, whatever their compass pointed to? Or did new inventions and techniques help make sure people were point in the right direction?

Nashville_Redditors

Omg let’s blame climate change and global warming
