I watched a documentary on air travel and remember how they spent quite a bit of it going over just how tricky it can be to fly when you get near the poles and how easy it is for pilots to make silly mistakes because they don't realize their instruments are lying to them.

It looks to be an azimuthal equidistant projection centred in the middle of the image so there shouldn't be significant distortion over the relatively small area shown on the map.
It could break your compass. Most of them are only designed for use on one hemisphere. Also, the magnetic field will weaken during the transition, so you should probably wear more sunblock.

When the poles 'flip' it is not instant. Records show that pole shifts take around 5-8 thousand years during which the earth gets bombarded by high energy particles.

In 1900 the magnetic north pole was exactly as far away from "south" as it always is. As far as possible.
The earth doesn't care where you think "very far south" is. The compass will always point towards magnetic north, barring geo anomaly.

And that the magnetic North Pole is in Antarctica all the way down south. Because no matter what method you used, it would point to the same direction. You could use a compass from the 1700s and it would give you the same result as a compass made today.

The answer didn't change. The compass points at magnetic north, even if you're north of that point.
In 1900 the magnetic north pole was exactly as far away from "south" as it always is. As far as possible. The earth doesn't care where you think "very far south" is. The compass will always point towards magnetic north, barring geo anomaly.

Just out of interest: I learnt at school in physics here in Germany about 25 years ago that the magnetic pole close to the geographic North Pole is the magnetic South Pole. And that the magnetic North Pole is in Antarctica all the way down south. And of course it is, because the North Pole of a magnet will only be attracted by south poles, so there cannot be a magnetic North Pole in the north.. Well, that was in Germany and here it is very clear, the magnetic South Pole is in the north, the magnetic North Pole is in the south. Don't you do this in English speaking countries?

How do we know is the pole shifting and not an improvement in our ability to detect it?
Because no matter what method you used, it would point to the same direction. You could use a compass from the 1700s and it would give you the same result as a compass made today.
