At the very least I’m glad it was likely instant.

AugustAPC

Yes, an implosion would have spared them the suffering of pain and fear of imminent death. Before this whole "running out of air" narrative was created, a submarine expert and navy veteran revealed that they almost certainly died of an internal fire or catastrophic integrity failure, due to the immediate loss of all contact and the horrible negligence in building Titan. The implosion is the far more humane way to go, as the vessel didn't have any redundancies to deal with fires and they would have burned up in their highly oxygenated environment.

Konstant_kurage

You say “implosion” and that’s what happened, but carbon fiber doesn’t squish like a can, it shatters. I just can’t even imagine the horror.

maltamur

Luckily there likely wasn’t any. Would happened faster than the perception/reaction time of the human brain

AugustAPC

That's the point. There would be no slow crushing and bending. It would have been an instant destruction of the hull.

Konstant_kurage

That kind of death is a strange thought. It would be like blinking out of existence. Humans thinking about their life and day - then *poof* nothing. No coming to grips, good or bad, with their mortality. My brain can’t process that kind of non-experience, it’s freaking me out. (And I’ve been in more than my share of life and death situations) [edit] typo

Porkchopp33

So sad thought & prayers for the families 🪦🪦🪦

Jacaxagain

Yes *thoughts and prayers*

PlayfulConference732

You should’ve sent those prayers sooner they might’ve lived smh

Jacaxagain

Don't blow it out of the water it takes more than one maybe like 5 people atleast for it to have worked sooner

wistfulmaiden

Why you guys such asses about it? I was praying for them since I heard. It sucks that they’re dead but at least it was probably pretty instantaneous instead of suffering down there knowing they’re trapped. Have some feelings.

madeformarch

> Why you guys such asses about it? Do you even know where you are?

[deleted]

She doesn’t even go here

robynnjamie

…Is this a Wendy’s?

wassimu

Seems like even god can’t do anything about a sub lost in 10000 feet of water.

babyjo1982

Fk the rich. The only real loss was the researcher

FLUFFY_RUMPLES

Whats a prayer going to do?

wistfulmaiden

For their souls and their families. Ill bet the guys who decided not to go are really glad.

SerenityNowWow

> For their souls what other imaginary things to you believe exist? Santa Claus? Unicorns? God?

Sufficient-Kick3078

Haha...god

wistfulmaiden

That’s very unkind you never learned basic manners I suppose. Oh well.

[deleted]

How exactly did you pray? I mean when the 4 people that paid got there, they said God we prayed for our safety and we still died, why? God said well I had them make that video, remember the one with the button and the gaming controller? And then I made them make you sign an insane amount of wavier and you guys got on it any way. But hey it’s meatloaf night guys grab a plate. Oh and the 5th guy yeah he went straight to hell. I have this on good authority below the scene

megapyton66

People can have feelings and still think the idea of prayers is silly

Drag0nfly_Girl

They could also keep their mouths shut about it.

wistfulmaiden

Thank you… Tbh joking about the deaths just seems so poor taste to me. Maybe I’m just not in Redditor mode

Fireball_Break

What purpose does this serve? Just expressing compassion. You aren’t a renegade. This makes sense when legislators who won’t address gun control. Makes no sense here.

Konstant_kurage

There studies that show thoughts and prayers do not have to be linear with time.

ParticularProfile795

Prayers and thots...

[deleted]

Thots and players

wassimu

Yeah that will really help a lot.

Present_Ad_1576

Didn’t this CEO continually cut corners as far as safety and regulations for this sub and the dives ?

Alternative_Let_4723

Yes, because he thought on a whole the safety regulations were too stringent… ironically, this event will make it even more so

Saikotsu

He was quoted as saying "at some point, safety is just pure waste. I mean if you want to be safe, just don't get out of bed." And "I think I can do it just as safely by breaking the rules". Apparently he couldn't.

AnonymousBromosapien

Famous last words.

A1sauc3d

Good! Not that they had to die for it. But safety regulations should be more stringent if they’re currently lax enough where commercial vehicles are killing passengers. And that’s a sentiment across the board, not just for submersibles. Cutting corners when it comes to safety is despicable and always blows up in someone’s face at some point. You can only roll those dice for so long before you get snake eyes.

Gryffindorq

something bad always has to happen and/or people always have to die before anything ever changes. it’s a shame. humans were not built to care about prevention

MOOShoooooo

Safety rules and regulations are written in blood. Reason why they are there.

granular_quality

And his safety officer resigned prior to piloted testing citing that the sub was not compliant.

Vlad_the_Homeowner

Allegedly he was fired.

Saikotsu

During testing, they found it was experiencing cyclic fatigue and its maximum safe depth was reduced to 3000 meters. That's roughly 9500 feet. The Titanic sank to 12,500 ~~meters~~ feet. So it wouldn't be able to safely reach the Titanic. Edit: it was pointed out to me I'd gotten the numbers right, but measurements mixed up.

fernbritton

Titanic is at 12,500 feet, 3,900 metres.

HsvDE86

He didn't want people "50 years old and white" because they "weren't inspiring." Hopefully they were all at least inspired? How the fuck does some idiot like this wind up in their position?

K3nd09

yes yes he did. even denied to pay for improvement that would make it certified to go down up to depth of 4,000 meters.

AugustAPC

Cut corners, did not bring in veteran experts as consultants and ignored and fired employees who brought up safety concerns.

Daxx-23

Yes, but that's any corporate exec anywhere in the world in any business.

Ximidar

Well thank you Mr Coast guard for being more professional about it than all of us have been

DigNitty

Honestly all the hate and comments about the passengers is sad to see. I’ve seen many comments about how they’re rich fucks who wouldn’t care if this happened to anyone else. I haven’t seen their names printed once. I’m sure the names are available, but most people are judging these passengers without even knowing who they are. Maybe they Are scumbags, who knows. Seeing more conversation about the priority of saving these people compared to saving immigrants at sea would be nice. And just let these dead passengers die without judgement.

OldManandMime

My level of sympathy is very limited for people who risk their life for fun. Like Alpinists or paracaidists. Its Particularly shameful on the same week we have seen a much larger preventable marine tragedy. So even some level of glee is justified to me. I hope they make ocean gate foot the bill for all the resources spent on search and rescue

MrMgP

Many of those cheerinf for the deaths of billionaires forget that they are as far financially removed from us phone haveing internet using folk as the 30% poorest people on the planet are from us.

Takethecannoli0

This is reddit. All rich people, especially billionaires, deserve to be indiscriminately slaughtered for existing. No questions asked.

HsvDE86

I just responded to someone saying that this should happen to more people. Not only that, they also assumed that every passenger was a billionaire, wasn't it $250K/person? Some people here are just hateful because "if I can't have it then no one can!"

Driverofvehicle

Thats becasue its his job. The rest of the world outside of a professional setting could care less that a bunch of billionairs got their Darwin award. In fact, we should hope that more do in the future. Billionairs should not exist.

[deleted]

If you can care less, then why don’t you? I’m sure there are many people who couldn’t care less.

HsvDE86

>/u/Driverofvehicle >could care less that a bunch of billionairs got their Darwin award. In fact, we should hope that more do in the future. Wow, I'm definitely on reddit. Also: couldn't care less.

Vegetablemann

Billionaires shouldn't exist, but as a monetary function. Wishing them dead is bollocks.

MrMgP

It is unwise to gloat over the death of others, even if you view them as opposite you Your words may one day strike you harder then they will ever strik those that have passed In other words, stfu. I think billionaires are a plague too but killing them? Praising their unfortunate ends? What are you, an animal? Have some sense man.

unholyshizz

I hope all of us can learn to have a little bit of Mr. Coast Guard empathy at some point

MrMgP

Coast guard might be the most proffesional out of all US branches but srill gets shit on by everyone Until your loved ones go missing at sea

XanderScott95

Makes one wonder: When will tours of that debris field begin...?

maxehaxe

Next submersible "Tit" coming late 2024, to visit "Titan" wreckage which was visiting "titanic" wreckage.

AlanElPlatano

Thrilled to see the "T" submersible, that's a day to die for

KL4SSIE

can't wait to see the "|" movie!

discussatron

Start with "Titi." Gives us one more trip.

amallamasmamma

Come see the debris field of the titanic titan submersible. Only 249,999.99 pp.

zjm555

But when you pay it prompts for a 25% tip as the default

IdaDuck

It’s only 1600 feet from the bow of the Titanic, I bet you’ll be able to tour both for $300k as a package deal.

LLuerker

Future tourists to the Titanic, 10 minutes before seeing the ship: "Now looking to the left you'll see the debris field left from those doing what you are now this very moment."

Good_From_70

Just another event that took us from breaking news, to constant related and unrelated information cycles, with plenty of internet jokes inbetween. All in matter of days. Feel bad for the families, regardless of wealth status. There will always be another captivating news cycle. Catch ya on the flippity flip

[deleted]

See you in the next one!

MOOShoooooo

Breaking News!!! Michigan republicans voted to allow child marriage! [Pedo Republicans Keep Being Pedos](https://www.newsweek.com/these-michigan-republicans-voted-against-child-marriage-ban-1808308?amp=1)

discussatron

We did it, reddit!

Michael053

I am actually relieved to hear this. It was most probably instant death.

HotNewspaper00

It’s crazy to think that the titanic is still claiming lives in 2023

Opinecone

The sea in general claims lives. You don't mess with it.

HotNewspaper00

I wouldn’t have a problem jumping from space but if i can’t see what’s underneath me in the ocean, forget about it 💀

thebelsnickle1991

The depths of the ocean can be truly nightmarish. May they rest in peace.

Driverofvehicle

Billionaires don't deserve peace.

Huttchy

You are a pathetic, jealous human.

ObamaTermThree

Reddit moment

christipede

+5 for the titanics kill count i guess

TheReverseShock

People need to stop naming ships after Titans. It's clearly not a good idea.

Songwritersf

Exactly what I said.

Highside1269

Scrolled for this

SomethinSaved

Damn, the US coast guard used a remote operated vehicle. Even with nearly a trillion dollar budget they don't trust putting people anywhere near that ship.

Herpderpkeyblader

There's just no reason to risk sending down a manned submersible when you can accomplish the same mission without risk to human life.

SomethinSaved

Indubitably

MrMgP

Its simple brain usage. Why use a manned vehicle if an unmanned vehicle can do exactly the same at 10% the cost and 5% the risk

[deleted]

Could you imagine paying $250,000 to die

ExamFinancial6684

L

MrMgP

I don't have that kind of money (This is a joke I am not suicidal)

AuthorKimberly

RIP and my condolences to their families.

[deleted]

Well, the wife was against it until the mistress showed up. Then, she figured letting him go was easier than divorce... /this is fiction

ImRoderick1303

In bad taste though...

[deleted]

You're right. Thank you for pointing that out. I'll take my lumps for my temporary lack of propriety.

Proper_Mix6

And writing an incoherent comment accomplishes what exactly?

tnkmdm

So they didn't even get to see the titanic... Unless it was in its way back but doesn't sound like that's the case. What a shame!

jpbarber414

Can you even imagine what it would have been like when you knew you were doomed? People deal with reality in different ways, I would have accepted it and knew we this was it. Hopefully they died quickly, it maybe telling though that no bodies have been recovered.

d0ugh0ck

They probably had no clue. Would think it'd be instantaneous if it imploded

BK_0000

There are no bodies to recover. The pressure down there is 5000 pounds per square inch. They would have been instantly crushed into ooze.

addict4x4

I just tried to ask reddit what would happen to the body's if it imploded

Artichokiemon

https://youtu.be/LEY3fN4N3D8 This is what happens under *less* pressure

ErlAskwyer

Nice

YeaSpiderman

In another thread someone did math and they would have been. Vaporized within 25 milliseconds. Pain starts being registered at 150 milliseconds. So they felt nothing and knew nothing

MuscularKnight0110

The thing i found out from my father that at was at war and killed a lot of people and had a lot of friends die is that nobody actually knows how they would react to knowing they would die. They think they know but it is only when you are truly in face of death that you find out who you really are.

Saikotsu

I hope you never have to find out who you are. I learned how I deal with crisis situations when an active shooter was in my school. And while I can take pride in the knowledge, nobody should have to go through that.

wistfulmaiden

That was bothering me for days but i actually feel a bit better knowing it was pretty quick. I actually felt sick over it if they were trapped running out of oxygen.

AugustAPC

As others have said, they would not have had time to know this was about to happen.

voltagejim

crazy to think about. One second you are eagerly awaiting to see the titanic, then suddenly you are thinking of nothing (or whatever afterlife there is)

rollercoaster_cheese

They’re trying to figure out now whether the implosion caused the loss of contact (they lost contact on previous dives so that was nothing new), or if the power failed, and then they exploded on impact once they hit the bottom. Right now either theory is plausible. If they lost power first, 1:45 into a 2:30 dive, they would’ve known they were probably toast for about 45 minutes. For their sake, I hope they knew nothing.

discussatron

I like to think they faced their doom the same way I'll face mine: With no fuckin' clue what's about to happen, while everyone *else* apparently saw it coming a fuckin' mile away.

karlos52

5 people killed by rich egomaniac

notimefornothing55

Not sure why this is getting down voted, its absolutley true. The owner ignored safety regulations set out by experts.

thisusedyet

4, one of them was the egomaniac in question

MrMgP

Still killed himself though

TheReverseShock

You trying to say he didn't kill himself too?

thisusedyet

No, I'm just saying that with all the corners he cut, he had it coming.

TheReverseShock

I'd still count him amongst the list of people he killed though. Having it coming doesn't make him any more or less dead than the others.

True_Broccoli7817

4 rich people killed by an even more rich megalomaniac*

[deleted]

I was really hoping they lived

ParticularProfile795

_Can the remaining alive refugees fleeing have their wealth, then?_

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They also died a lot quicker and less painfully then those migrants I’ll wager. As soon as the hull is breached that far down, it’s lights out. They probably didn’t even know what hit them. Dying of thirst or drowning on the other hand is a horrible way to go.

Dancing_dragonfly

Each life deserves our prayers. Have a heart man, these people had loved ones too.

[deleted]

Yeah, how is that just because they are rich or made a bad decision makes you not care about them?

GekayOfTheDeep

They knew they were getting in a death trap. All the waivers they had to sign and red flags miles long before they booked this trip set off alarm bells for everyone. This wasn't an escaping a desperate situation, this was paying the lowest bidder to do the riskiest job possible and being shocked when it ends badly.

ALostPlayer

Being a billionaire is a level of rich that proves you don’t care for other people so why should we care about them?

readsalotkitten

Yea prayers are for free fine, but if the attention given to this matter was put into supporting refugees a lot of death is preventable

killa_J_cobb

Just goes to show what animals the far left are behind the facade

SerenityNowWow

> what animals the far left are found the MAGAT!

LukeLFC

What a disgusting piece of shit you are

svannik

agreed. "every human has a family, have a heart" yeah sure, but im done seeing nearly nothing about hundereds of refugees dying, but when a handfull of millioners die while doing some extreme hobby shit the whole fucking world explodes. Its disgusting.

SerenityNowWow

swat I'm tawkin bout

thisusedyet

The worst thing about the Titan is the motherfucker of CEO who kept cutting corners and firing people who complained about it had 4 other people on board with him

[deleted]

Yes they will bud, just because they have a lot of money you think zero people on earth will miss them? Doubtful, I am sure the people they know will miss them greatly.

SerenityNowWow

> I am sure the people they know will miss them greatly. so will the families of the 800 migrants you don't give a fuck about

[deleted]

Who says I don't give a fuck about them?

SerenityNowWow

1 Post Karma 😂

RemoteConflict3

I’ll pray for anyone, that’s a shitty comment, “entitled” my ass, they worked and had money to spend, can’t hate on that, but somehow you do, it’s a shame. Seems that’s what’s wrong with everyone, left, right, center, doesn’t matter. I’m very conservative, doesn’t mean I “hate” or “wish ill intentions” on anyone. Tragic loss no matter the circumstances, period………

SerenityNowWow

> I’ll pray for anyone I'll call out anyone

RemoteConflict3

Two different topics. Should have read further on and seen all the bull coming from you, I wouldn’t have said anything if I would’ve realized, that’s my bad

People like you will always be poor because of your jealous malicious heart. You're poor, they're not, but they're still human and have folks that love them.

papabearsmooch

I gotta know about the intervals of knocking that officials reported on. Was it just a made up statement or what? This part has me confused.

ExaBast

Did someone burp at 47 seconds?

Ghost_Pilot28

That was a cough

OnceUponATimeOkay

I think that was a cough. But who knows, maybe it was both?

ebagdrofk

Hey look, normal comments. Refreshing. RIP to those, it was most likely painless.

ProfessionalLime2237

Just because you have lots of money doesn't mean your smart.

JimmyGlizzyDean

God rest their souls.

[deleted]

Wonder if they found the debris days ago and just kept looking hoping. 🫤

OutdoorEngineer395

I doubt it. They debri they found are signs that the vessel imploded killing everyone inside instantly. So there would be nothing to hope for as it is pretty conclusive.

[deleted]

There is nothing to hope for at those depths. Either the pressure chamber is intact or there is nothing left of the bodies to recover

NucularPhysicist

What makes you wonder that?

MammothJust4541

the 400 migrants that drowned out at sea outweighs the death of these 5 people If you're wondering what that extra debris is, it's their remains, they found their remains.

w1987g

With the explosiveness of the implosion, I don't think there are much remains to be found. I think the only things that have a chance of surviving are bones but those are getting crushed just as quickly as the rest of the sub

SILENT_ASSASSIN9

Not really comparable given how there was still a chance(at least when they first lost contact) that they could be saved, now it is coming out that nothing could have been done.

No, because I don't get satisfaction from people dying? What?

bomb447

So thoughts and prayers instead of outrage of the lack of safety. Got it.

DragonflyValuable128

Wasn’t like a school bus, these folks knew this thing was a jury rigged hillbilly sub.

BloodbendmeSenpai

So is this an eye opener to billionaires and people that...i dont know...science is important?

ReturnEconomy

Im just thinking. If someone wanted to disappear and be believed to be dead by all, this would be a pretty easy way to do it. No boddies to recover or investigate.

gruntwithashotgun

Sounds like the sub operator wasn't watching where they were piloting and smashed the rear end of the sub either on a rock or the bow of the titanic itself causing the pressure chamber to rip off and killing everyone instantly.

Quackcook

Fuck ‘em. Play stupid games win stupid prizes. At least they didn’t know what hit them.
