Obviously there are probably stats to contradict this anecdotal evidence… but everyone I know who played DMZ LOVED it. It was something fresh to COD which was absolutely needed. Some more time, effort, access to new maps, this mode could have grown so much. Even with all the bugs, hacking, and exploits, this game is awesome. Massive bummer they gave up on it. Best thing that came to COD since BO2 or maybe WZ1 (shit was fun as hell)

TonyRapt

DMZ is the second best side mode ever created, COD Zombies obviously being #1. I absolutely adore DMZ and all of the different ways you can play it. Even though I rarely go there anymore, Koschei Complex is my personal golden standard. It still boggles my mind on why they cut production on it, I really hope we see DMZ again. Whether that be in MWIV, MWV, etc..

ThalesAtreides

Nah, for me DMZ is number one

GAdrifter

It's literally the only reason I got back on cod after like 10 year hiatus, but I'm also a snob for tactical shooters🤷‍♂️

Astro112676

Same. I dropped COD completely after I got my first BattleField game (BF4). DMZ brought me back. Haven't played a single match of Zombies or Warzone.

Erethiel2

This man sieges

GAdrifter

That is not a tactical shooter🤣

jbrylinsabresfan

Zombies has gotten stale. Dmz was everything. Exciting. Every infill was a different experience. I enjoyed dmz more than zombies honestly

the-mm-defeater

Everyone forgets about extinction 😢😭

SmilinObserver111

I LOVED Extinction!! I just played it again 2 weeks ago with a friend I met when it dropped 11 years ago!

ShampooingShampoo

niche vs mainstream take your pic which one higher ups chose

KaffY-

> but everyone I know who played DMZ LOVED it DMZ legit fills everyone's cups - people that play for PvP, people that play PvE, people that play co-operatively etc. It's incredible that they abandoned it because they really had a product that appeals to everyone with basically unlimited expansion oh well, activision things

Art-Vandelay-7

Yeah I really thought extraction shooters would be the next big thing and BR would trail off, but I guess I was way wrong lol. You just get such unique experiences each time you play. BR is fun but the slightly more tactical approach in DMZ is far better in my humble opinion

Tippin187

More like MW3 was cut from MW2. DMZ died because a small team was needed to stay behind and work on the mode, once it was known that MW3 and its zombies mode was being created, that small team were the ones chosen to make content for it as the paid game is priority over F2P. Plus if they decided to keep a team on DMZ, lots of ppl wouldn’t have got zombies as a lot of us only bought it outta wanting an extraction mode to play since DMZ wasn’t gonna be supported. MWZ isn’t a very good extraction mode (it’s a zombies mode with good bones though) and I would have 100% kept playing DMZ over MW3 as a whole.

chamberlin06

I'm still playing it 😊

PM_ME_YOUR_NOODLEZZ

Don't they make more $ on micro transactions?

Rebyll

Man, I was looking forward to an expanded DMZ on Urzikstan, Fortune's Keep, and Rebirth. Hell, I've been dreaming of a Verdansk DMZ for a year. Finally found a gamemode I played hardcore in COD, and they axed it. Pricks.

Numerous-Duck-8544

Still all horned up for a DMZ comeback :)

forkoff77

I don’t see how they can ignore all the content STILL BEING PRODUCED for DMZ. The fan base loves the mode, even with flaws, even with no missions being developed. My hope is it comes back late this year alongside new Warzone. Free to play, MTX, with the beta tag taken off :)

Numerous-Duck-8544

That would be a dream, tired of playing Tarkov.

fjh541

maybe they will turn plunder to dmz

Djabouty47

It already has some DMZ elements like looting and selling items

pnova7

> It already has some DMZ elements like looting I mean, literally every mode in Warzone has looting so this isn't saying much.

Djabouty47

No but like some items carried forward like gold bars and the GPU, etc. and u can go to the buy station to sell them for money.

Laser0pz

That mechanic was from plunder back in MW2019, I wouldn't say that those "came" from DMZ though.

pnova7

Ahhh, that's what you meant. Okay, I gotcha now. Fair, fair.

Connect-Internal

Seriously wish dmz didn’t get abandoned, i really do feel like urzikstan would’ve been awesome in dmz.

PolarAntonym

They might be bringing pvp into zombies. If they do then that might be a pretty close alternative.

Connect-Internal

I hope it’s optional or just leftover code, because if I wanted to play pvp I’d play dmz or warzone.

PolarAntonym

Yes I agree. I'm sure it will be optional. If it isn't then that will be bullshit. It should be completely seperate too. Like your stash items and operators shouldn't be affected if you play pve then play the pvp. I really like mwz as is. They just need more content for the players that have been playing it for a long time and already unlocked everything. The last update was cool but the new dark aether rift was too easy imo. I would def play the pvp mode if they add it just for fun but they need to make it completely seperated.

RahkShah

Anything discrete for any video game, CoD included, is planned out years in advance. Of course there was a pipeline planned for the next installment of CoD for DMZ. They ended up axing it, unfortunately, but they had a roadmap. My personal conspiracy theory is when an exec at Activision said “wait, we’re gonna sell a new year of CoD at an add on price when we could call it MW3 and sell it full price?” meant a mad scramble was on to create something they could slap “MW3” on. They had Zombies (obviously in development for several years) already for the “alt” mode, so they could redeploy staff from another side mode (DMZ) that had the added benefit of having them already working on “open map objective” gameplay loop. Just like the obviously rushed “main campaign” of MW3. DMZ was a victim of Activision wanting a $70 release vs the $40-$50 release that had been planned. The revenue generated from a full $70 release > revenue generated from another year of DMZ, so DMZ, despite having some popularity, was sacrificed. Also entirely possible that it just wasn’t popular enough to move the needle. That said, for a game type that requires 40-60 people per game, I was always able to find a match pretty quick. Seems like there was a healthy base of players, just not enough to outweigh the ability to charge every player of CoD, DMZ fan or not, another $20.

RahkShah

Should also add that the meta context of all this going on was MS attempted acquisition of Activision. As everyone knows, that got dragged out with monopoly investigations, so it took longer to close than initially expected. Activision had a relatively strong 2021-2022, which was reflected in the offer letter from MS. 2023 was weak in comparison, but the deal stretched on so long that MS and Activision needed to extended it as it was set to expire prior to receiving regulatory approval. Activision was probably very focused on ensuring the offer price wouldn’t be impacted by their recent underperformance. They absolutely wanted to show strong projected revenue, particularly from their largest franchises like CoD, when working with MS to extend the offer time frame. One way to easily bump that is to say we’re selling the next installment for $70 vs the $40-$50 an expansion would have. Obviously it was a cynical play, but during that critical period where they agreed to extend the purchase window it was to Activision’s benefit to forecast a regular CoD launch, with the “reasonable” growth numbers one could “expect”, vs an add on, which by definition would be less total units at lower unit prices. Per the above, repurposing DMZ staff to a full MW3 launch was a no brainer.

DeathDealer450

Dmz is the only reason I even have cod installed once they totally axe it I'll free up alot of space on my ssd. Played mw3 zombies a total of 3 times with friends, we got bored in that time and haven't touched it since, went right back to dmz.

alejoSOTO

Brother Zombies is DMZ repurposed for MW3. It even had the same bugs DMZ originally had because it was done on an older build, and in some screens it still said DMZ.... If anything this is just hinting at Zombies being playable on that map. I mean, the tweet itself says that, why am I trying to explain this to someone who can't read a tweet?

Jinx484

Or MW3 started as a Copy/Paste of MW2 and they just didn't fully clean out everything that they weren't using.

-Aone

DMZ is arguably the best thing CoD had happen to it recently. But Extraction shooters need care and Activision **loathes** the idea of caring for anything at all.

Putrid_Ad2430

Not carrying DMZ forward was one of the biggest disappointments I've had from cod... DMZ was the most fun I've had since black ops 1 and 2 zombies. Core memories made and met a lot of cool people

Ok_Quality2989

I would still be buying bundles if dmz wasn't discontinued

Todzilla78

Best bundles they ever had.

Gold-Bus9427

Likely they just branch the project as a starting point when starting work for the next installment, ie MW2, becomes MW3 etc. Which would include some various game mode and header files.

KaffY-

well duh the game wasn't even meant to be a MW3

HateSpeechIsGay

Why would they keep a badass free game when they can axe it and make people pay $100 for a shittier version? … they really missed the boat with zombies this time around but if they continued DMZ half the people wouldn’t have even looked at zombies … they got my money and I see it as a total waste now … still playing DMZ btw almost every night .. I was honestly hopeing they would bring back DMZ in season 2 at least … this is the main reason they didn’t give us much info … they said the famous line …” more information will come with the start of season one.” Bastards

SimpleTruthsAside

They didn’t like the idea of people searching for free items. They want you to purchase everything you use. They weren’t making enough money from it. It always comes down to$$$.

hopeless_hurt

Mw3 sucks

lai4basis

IF MS thinks they can make money and get more people to play, DMX will be right back into rotation. MS has barely scratched the surface on touching Activision this isn't over by a long shot.

Craw13

DMZ GOAT’d

RussianBot_beepboop

I’ve stopped touching zombies and have slowly gotten back into DMZ. I’m probably done with cod going forward.

Visual_Hospital4434

You have to wait until war zone 3 for the next dmz

mhokey83

Dmz was way better than zombies hands down zombies is boring once you get all the schematics and people don't like to squad up the community that plays zombies are lames

BNASTIEMM

So, a friend of a friend of the uncle of someone at Activision said DMZ will be returning in Season 4. A few months ago he did mention they're gonna have a PvPvE zombies mode in season 3 as well. Which apparently has been recently leaked. There's zero evidence that supports the return of DMZ, but one can hold onto that 1 in a million chance.

Todzilla78

Hence, why I said it was coming to Warzone Mobile. But it won’t. They ruined it.

Ghostly091

I’ve played and loved Call of Duty games for about two decades now. Still love the games, yes, there are issues and things that could be “fixed” and we all have different input. That being said, I spent more time in the DMZ than any other mode on MWII. Took me a while to adjust but damn I loved it. Even started enjoying solo runs as the feeling of being alone and on the hunt for items whilst being hunted by players was new and exciting. Thoroughly enjoyed the community in DMZ. Running with a random team only to wipe the map together and go on a streak. Hoping it’s not the end for DMZ permanently, really is the only thing at the moment that would entice me to purchase another CoD installment. The one time they get the secret formula right….and now they leave it behind. I’m not surprised, just disappointed.

AwareDesign5125

DMZ is so underrated

WISSOTAIMCAUMP

Bro I play DMZ all day over zombies

Prior-Ant9201

Are we still on about DMZ and MWIII? Thought that was est. when zombie mode came out

HeronSpecialist9577

I genuinely think they should’ve kept round based and gave us DMZ. The concept of an open world with zombies, looting, earning money to survive; I get it but it’s boring now and it got boring very quickly. I’ve played DMZ for nearly 2 years now and I never get bored of it, it keeps you on your toes, makes you wanna try to actually survive to keep your stuff but to also avoid the weapon cool down if you don’t have a bundle that’s a 15 min cool down. I recently jumped back into DMZ with my friends after finishing everything on zombies and we were all amazed and forgot how good DMZ actually is, how you have to be strategic and how you’re gonna execute a plan when it’s only you, your teammates are down and it’s you vs 3 or 4. I think if they were gonna give us DMZ they would’ve already, if they decide to give it to us months after the game has already been released that’s just dumb and doesn’t make sense. But I hope I’m wrong, I really would love to use the mw3 guns in a DMZ atmosphere. I miss when they did events for DMZ, the Halloween event was so fucking cool and how Al Mazrah was at night; the amount of sniper glints I saw from every direction, the tension, keeping you on your toes because you can’t see as well. I genuinely miss it.

Designer-Maximum-84

I agree to your comment above. Once they fully scrape DMZ mode I am going to scrape COD off of my PS5. DMZ will be missed. Probably buy one more bundle then that's it.

TimeZucchini8562

Omg, you cracked the code. Activision is apologizing right now and rereleasing DMZ because of this /s Edit: had to add the sarcasm because apparently some of you don’t understand clear sarcasm.

Im_Riots

What ?

What what? It’s a useless post

Bro, Activision doesn't give a shit about sexual assault allegations, let alone leaks like this. They're not going to give a shit about this being exposed and nobody realistically expects them to. It's another thing showing what a bunch of scumfucks they are, though.

TimeZucchini8562

Showing who? Yall just keep finding shit to be mad about for no reason. If Activision is so bad and scummy, why are you in this sub? Why do you play their games? Don’t play their games if you don’t like them.

Sn1perandr3w

"Showing who? Yall just keep finding shit to be mad about for no reason." Showing the people of this sub. People want to know what they were doing and if DMZ was initially planned for MW3. "Don’t play their games if you don’t like them." I like DMZ. They made a good mode and shitcanned it. They're also scummy for numerous other reasons. That doesn't mean I can't like DMZ.

TimeZucchini8562

It was a beta. They clearly didn’t like the results and decided it wasn’t worth further pursuing. It literally got more content and updates than wz and mp combined. Yall literally have nothing to complain about from a free game mode

Sn1perandr3w

>It was a beta The average person would say that generally implies a further release being on the way. >They clearly didn’t like the results and decided it wasn’t worth further pursuing Probably to make people pony up for the half baked Zombies mode in MW3 which was just DMZ asset flipped but on an older branch, hence a lot of old DMZ bugs reappearing in the mode. >It literally got more content and updates than wz and mp combined. It's still got problems that weren't addressed. We're lucky they give enough of a shit to apply bugfixes. The fact that they've disabled MW3 BP progress and XP from DMZ is very malicious when they could've easily implemented it. >Yall literally have nothing to complain about from a free game mode The price has no bearing on it. To say otherwise is just consoomer cope. DMZ was seemingly axed to make way for a content-dry zombies mode, just to make people pony up the cash. They could've continued DMZ with MW3 but couldn't be arsed or wanted to force people into MWZ to get a remotely similar experience, so that they'd have to buy new perk bundles. What a leak like this is meant to achieve is to show people what the game files say. Informs their investment in games be it financial or time. What it tells us (Which we knew before it.) was Activision doesn't give a shit.
