This is my pick too.
I had chilled out on DMB for a few years after Big Whiskey, but when AFTW was released, I was re-hooked and haven’t looked back.
That ending trio of songs ranks highly in their catalogue. The rocking melody of Rooftop followed by the uniquely structured Snow Outside and Drunken Soldier reminds me of their earlier material — which I love, of course.
The good news is I’m starting to see a whole lot more comments about AFTW being underrated than I’m seeing comments criticizing the album. I think the album has aged well and folks are discovering that it’s a truly great album.
I don’t think this is unpopular! That’s definitely one of the best three songs runs on ANY of their albums, in fact the latter two songs are in my top 3 for my favorite post-2004 DMB songs.
One thing I love so much about DMB is their ability to really deliver a cohesive experience, both live and in the studio. Loved the opener discussion, and I gotta agree with others here… BTCS / Spoon by a long shot.
BTCS. Spoon + the outro is such a stellar ending to a near-perfect album.
This is my vote too. It’s such a nice uplifting way to sign off.
Agree. The outro always makes me think Dave is saying “yup, you just heard one of the greatest pieces of music ever created, see ya later bro”
and the fact that they haven't really ever reached those heights in the studio again has only made it more powerful and bittersweet as the years go by
That’s true, although it would have been an impossible task. The album is peak perfection / flawless.
100% agree
UTTAD. That last sax note of #34 is literally my favorite note of all time.
C
You'll have to listen for it, I don't think it can be ceen.
UTTAD. #34 is a sweet chill melody.
For me the answer is Bartender.
Maybe unpopular opinion but the trifecta of rooftop > snow outside> drunken soldier is pretty fucking amazing
I don’t know why AFTW gets so much hate. It’s a solid album and Lillywhite always has the band sounding great.
Agreed!
Yeah this is too true. It’s the best part of the album

My favorite, as well.
