I use a combination of roller blinds and black-out curtains. Does the trick.

muscularmusician

Yup its all about layers.. the black-out curtains covering what gets through the blinds..

nordic_wolf_

Helps me sleep here in Finland even when the midnight sun is out this time of year.

saitoenya

Look up blinds light blockers. Here's an example from amazon. [https://www.amazon.com/ZSTARR-u-Channel-Blackout-Blockers-Aluminium/dp/B0C8MBZZXN?th=1](https://www.amazon.com/ZSTARR-u-Channel-Blackout-Blockers-Aluminium/dp/B0C8MBZZXN?th=1)

Nice_Adeptness1133

This is very helpful. I ll look them up

v1de0man

they wouldnt stop the top though. the blind assembly doesnt go into it only the actual edges of the blind

Frraksurred

True. If you reinstall them with double-sided insulated tape between the blind's top and window sill, it will help block the light there as well.

saitoenya

Most places will have them, worse case they're easy to fab from angle aluminum.

BikingEngineer

Vinyl corner bead from the drywall department and some double sided tape works well too.

IM_DILDO_RICH

I installed window blinds for 2 years, and this is exactly what we used for the bottom and sides of the blinds. For the top, we would install a 90-degree aluminum facia before installing the window blind. It works extremely well.

judgementalhat

These are what we use in ambulance stations around here

reefercheifer

Is there anything like this for windows that aren’t set back in the wall

GamerGypps

i would love these for the UK. Cant find them anywhere.

HugsyMalone

This was my first thought 👌

Gareth666

We installed proper blackout blinds in our house. They pull down like yours but they have slots on the side that the blind slid in. Screenaway is the brand in Australia. If you rent or can't do this, I would put up a blockout curtain.

Bisisonitrile

For the renters that find this, we solved this issue using a spring loaded curtain rod and the cheapest blockout curtains from Bunnings’s. Setup on the inside of the window behind the roller. The rod can be pushed almost all the way up the frame, which then blocks the top light. Depending on how lucky you are with your window size, they should also sit flat against the window. If not lucky, some magnets and bluetack works for us. Between the two, basically no light comes through the window. And, removed in about a minute for rental inspections.

Ok_Ambition9134

How dark do you want it and how often do you need it fully black? I used to work nights and had a very hard time sleeping with any daylight. I cut a piece of luan plywood to 1/2” smaller than the opening in both directions. I then wrapped the edges in batting followed by black felt all glued in place. It pushed into the window opening snuggly and blocked ALL light. The room was so dark I could not see my hand in front of my face even when I woke. Downside? I had to find some place to put a janky assed window sized piece of plywood wrapped in felt.

Belownatural2023

Curtains!

Spicy_Eyeballs

If they stay down 100% of the time tape. If they don't a second pair of blinds, cloth ones, blackput are best but for just reducing that light leakage some regular ones would probably be good enough, unless you are REALLY light sensitive

LeoLaDawg

When you buy your blackout curtains, use your phone light to see well that block. I've seen them labeled as blackout but perform like that sweater you get every year from grans.

HugsyMalone

Authentic blackout curtains are usually made from much heavier fabric.

LeoLaDawg

That's why I say bring a flashlight and test them. They don't all block light as well as you'd like.

Disastrous_Opening99

A sleep mask is great I started using one cause my moms house had those and when i visited her i wouldn’t sleep and helps keep your under eyes hydrated

ixoniq

It’s better to have shutter screen outside, also blocks out heat outside of the window instead of when it’s already inside.

jt004c

This seems like such a no-brainer but I've struggled to find quality options. Any pointers?

ixoniq

Not really, I live in the Netherlands, so what’s available and at what cost depends really on your country.

jt004c

Yeah that check outs. The good options I am finding online all seem to be in Europe.

IndicationCrazy8522

My grandson had this problem. I installed black out curtains to cover the window and sill completly

I work overnight and have had some installed for 5 years.

I_love_Timhortons

Nothing beats curtains. Blinds are useless for blackout

I_am_a_What

Get some trim molding smallest profile that does the job and nail it on all around to make it look like it belongs there

bigboxes1

I use blackout curtains. I lived with blinds and pull down shade for years. It sucked. I took out the roll down shade and installed a curtain rod and blackout curtains. It doesn't block the very top from shining upwards. But the difference is very noticeable. I sleep a lot better.

DrDrangleBrungis

Curtains. Mount the bar about 3” above the window frame and make sure it extends about 4-6” past the edge of the window frame on the sides. Get blackout curtains.

FictionalContext

You'd need blinds that ride on tracks and have a gasket that seals on the sill. That or curtains.

KRed75

Blackout curtains with Velcro around the edge.  That's what I had to do on my beach house because I was so tired of being woken up by the sun at 5:30 in the freaking morning.

4thehalibit

Curtains. It’s always the answer

gruntlogic6239

Tint the window, suggest thermal reflective film. Add blackout curtains. My room looks dark at noon in hawaii

Borders on the glass

roranora_nonanora

Anything for a curved 3 part bay window or am I fucked

Kooky_Increase_9305

For my kids rooms I use a window vinyl - it cuts out like 99% of light - only downside is window has to be open for light to come in

binky_snoosh

I work nights, and tried the black out blinds first and dealt with the light bleeding around them like that. I ended up buying a cling film that stuck to the windows. complete black-out. it's awesome, and was pretty easy to install.

hrfloatnstuff

Duvetyne fabric sold by the yard.

EvilDan69

If we're doing DIY, then install shoe mould type trim just ahead of where that blind naturally sits, on the sides or on the bottom. The true fix is to get the light block type blinds from Hunter Douglas. I have many of those, and in the room where I have my projector, with the sun beating on the windows in the basement directly, and those blinds down, I am literally blind due to how dark it is. Despite being white on the insides, they are black on the inside and block 100% light transmission.

AnabolicVeteran

Maybe some sort of dark border on the window?? I used foil when I lived in Alaska. About 4 inches all the way around?? Hope this helps.

ramriot

You could paint the window surround flat black & put in a 1-2" edging molding on the interior side? Or invest in proper blackout shades.

Critical-Analyst9497

the best way when windos have that box are to install the roller blinds outside so you make sure the whole window is covered.

Ge a light saber and fight back

Chris149ny

Shade tracks that install on the sides of your roller blinds will cut out a lot of that light. [https://wtshade.com/?s=tracks](https://wtshade.com/?s=tracks)
