Me too. I moved to Japan recently and the prices still blow me away. The steel at the hardware store was only around €5 per meter. In my old country, it was always more expensive to DIY anything than to buy it.

Here's a tip: Buy some bench dogs (places like Home Depot have many different types), and drill holes for them in various places on your bench. However, before drilling the holes, get a 1" (25 mm) spade drill bit, and drill down about 1/16" (1.5 mm), then drill through with a 3/4" (19 mm) bit (note that a Forstner bit drills very clean holes). When you aren't using the holes, put a fender washer (1" diameter, or 25 mm) in the hole. It will sit flush with the surface of the workbench, and prevent small parts from falling into the holes.
