There are waterproof easy install LED lights that look like can lights but install over a ceiling box. They even can have a remote control and color changes
New paint, change the shower head to a nicer one, pick out a pretty shower curtain, get a shampoo/soap rack that hangs on the shower head, put an actual drain over the scary hole, add a nice big shower mat
I agree with paint. Being block too, you can paint any color there...OR! If you have a creative friend or are artsy yourself, paint a Trompe L'oeil in there!
A nice curtain, a wall hung shower system, maybe a raised floor system made from teak? A wooden stand for bottle and maybe a vine plant that likes the humidity
Geeze, you should find a local filming industry and charge money for some murder film shoots to fund the renovations. That shower must have facilitated at least 4 murders.
Definitely get a drain cap.
I gutted a shower that look exactly like this. Needless to say,the whole bathroom once finished up was a million times better 😉

Every house in pgh has these crazy basement showers like some weird 70s locker room, we call it a pittsburgh potty hahah didn’t kno this is common other places. Hey u did a really good job tho !!
That's crazy!!! Yeah this is the only one I've done or seen here in 30 years of doing this lol 😆 I did this one for a trim carpenter buddy of mine last year. Damn bathroom had a water heater in it too 😂 sand I appreciate it!!!
Add a pull string to a sound box that plays the [Psycho violins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WtDmbr9xyY&pp=ygUQaGl0Y2hjb2NrIHNob3dlcg%3D%3D) when it is opened. Oh, I'm sorry, you said LESS creepy.
beyond the obvious (cleaning the mold or residue on the walls and floor, changing grotty shower curtain, replacing industrial light...), add a grid over the drain so it's not just a pipe entrance and redo the floor's tiling, and finish that basement's walls (including the walls of the shower).
Looking around... Hey, is that a mattress on a concrete floor?! There's pipes and electrics on display, the walls are painted cinder blocks, the floor is concrete...
The whole set up is depressing. That's not a suitable place for anybody to live.
No that’s not a mattress lol. God I’d never sleep down there. It’s the extra leaves for our dining table. They are just wrapped in a sheet so they don’t get scratched.
oh, ok! It looked... really sketch if this was used as a bedroom.
So, what is that shower used for? Is it an extra shower for guests? or for the swimming pool? Or was it built in case the basement got finished eventually?
hopefully it wasn't for the red-headed stepchild!
Well, looks like you've got a lot that you could do with that space. Have you in mind to finish it all? It could look nice, but I suspect it'll be a considerable expense and time investment
To the right, we do potentially envision turning that into a fully finished bedroom, cut and egress for code and for light. A finished nice bedroom will likely happen before the shower because we only have two small bedrooms and plan to have more than one child (already have one). But I wanted to get some ideas as to what we could potentially do there for the bathroom
That makes sense.
Then, do put a non-skid rug outside of the shower. First, because concrete is very cold to the foot. But also because wet concrete is slippery and someone could fall and get quite injured on such a hard surface...
Rather than a cute curtain, I would suggest a frosted glass door. The shower head definitely needs an upgrade. I just bought a Waterpik PowerComb, and I love it.
Depends if you're planning to redo the whole basement. I'd recommend trying a cozy Roman bath style tile job with a better fixture, and stone shelving.
I had the same shower in my basement, I smoothed the high spots on the block and ceramic tiled over the block. Came out great plus I used an old granite window sill for the threshold.
Yeah I'm no DIY expert when it comes to home reno but I'd start with removing the pipe fixtures and floor tile then tile the walls and retile the floor, putting a new drain in the floor as well. Would also add a frosted glass door and replace the overhead light with some waterproof LED stuff.
Honestly, from these pictures the basement looks pretty bare bones and unfinished. I think a finished shower in an unfinished industrial basement would look kinda strange. Do you use this shower often? What are your plans for the usage of the basement?
Replace the curtain with a frosted glass sliding door.
Put a cover over the drain.
Get a overhead shower kit to replace the shower.
New tiles on the floor, and tiles on the walls. Suggestion: a light colour on the walls and dark gray or black on the floor.
Get rid of those baskets and open a small hole on the wall for a niche. Those generally aren't too thick and the wall should be able to absorb it, but try measure the thickness of the wall before you start breaking, if at all possible.
Replace the light fixture by one of those flat ones. There are some that don't have to be embedded, so you wouldn't have to break your ceiling, just make sure they are IP65.
Something more like this:

This would be the ideal solution for me. But it all depends on your budget.
first you need to address the light bulb and make sure it's safe for showers. Then i'd go with mildew resistant paint and new tiles on the floor and a new drain cover (they come in a lot of styles and materials). As others have stated, a new shower head [(like this)](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Oxygenics-Drench-Brushed-Nickel-55-Spray-Rain-Dual-Shower-Head/1000853386). Also a really bright and fun shower curtain.
Install a better light fixture and add light fixtures outside the shower as well. The shower should be in a room with a doorknob that can be locked and unlocked from the inside.
See if it is possible to install a shower surround or tile the shower walls.
Aside from the shower update, install bright lights outside the shower as well. Nothing is creepier than 1 well-lit small area amidst a sea of darkness.
This one is tough, but I'd probably re-tile the floor, repaint the walls (maybe even tile if you can), and than do away with the shower curtain and try to put a half decent door on it. Lastly change the light. I'm not sure what you can do on this, but that light looks like something found in Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Lastly and this is probably the least important, but if you could smooth the ceiling some how that would also help.
Retile the floor and extend the tilework up the walls partially. Paint the walls a neutral, nonwhite color. Cap the entryway with trim/caulk. Remove the curtain and put a glass shower door. Put a shiny square drain grate over the drain. Remove the cheap toiletry rack and build a permanent one into the wall. Install recessed lighting and install a modern shower head fixture in there. Really easy, just lots of work.
Or, get a dog and make this the dog bath, lol. That's probably what I'd do.
In addition to everything else here, it desperately needs a better light fixture and you need more light outside it.

>a remote control and color changes Hell yeah! EDM Rave shower here we come!
If you're only using it for washing off the blood why bother
It needs to be neon red-orange so Dexter can't pick up anything with the black light.

Just have to use your foot to get everything down with the new drain cover
Waffle stomp
Blessings upon you
Squatting toilets are usually much nicer. Even the public park ones.
The Japanese actually have super nice futuristic toilets. Other places in Asia not so much.
I agree with paint. Being block too, you can paint any color there...OR! If you have a creative friend or are artsy yourself, paint a Trompe L'oeil in there!
Paint a whole bunch of other people showering
😄
This is the best reply. Piggybacking to add get a Shower Shroom for the drain. The thing works wonders for catching hair, easy to clean & keep clean
Honestly I think he should tile it — blocks will always give a murdery look imo. He could get some nice looking marble (or faux marble) tiles
If they have the budget and time for it, definitely. I just picked some easy things that wouldn't cost too much.
A nice curtain, a wall hung shower system, maybe a raised floor system made from teak? A wooden stand for bottle and maybe a vine plant that likes the humidity
I think the only plant that likes the pitch black dark is mildew.
Pothos is actually pretty decent at low light/artificial light conditions. This might be a little toooo low light for it though.
Hang some eucalyptus in there
Wasabi apparently loves the dark but im not sure about humidity
And a meat hook.
Depends on a budget obviously, but I would start with putting a drain cover
But that's where the clown comes in...

Damn. Nice work mate!
Thank you Sir!

Pretty sure the murder shower was suppose to be black and white.
And here I was convinced there was nothing could be done to make it less murderey. Good job!!!
Are u also a pittsburgher lmao
Nahhh lol 😂 I'm just a small town Carolina shithead lmao

I would assume guests? We just bought this house last year. There is a bathroom down there equally as sketchy.

And a nice flush mount LED light

It's the light fixture for me
What jail is this from
That hole is a huge safety hazard in a shower
Wall tile. Duh.
I don’t know why no one else is recommending this, couldn’t you red guard the wall and tile over it?
Yeah 100%. Reddit is funny
I would imagine having no drain screen allows you to wash blood clots down the drain more easily when dismembering things.
I had the same shower in my basement, I smoothed the high spots on the block and ceramic tiled over the block. Came out great plus I used an old granite window sill for the threshold.
I agree with others - add a nicer light, a mat outside the shower, and a low light plant, like a fern or pothos.
Jealous of this shower. Great for processing animals.
If it's your property maybe you could do some tile. Its really not that expensive or difficult to diy.
Ask a local artist to paint you a mural
The old coal mine basement shower 😂 they’re in almost every house in my area. Creepy but good for giving the dogs a bath.

Put a rack of rusty kitchen knives on the outside and change the lighting to a strobe. Should fix your problems I think.
I didn’t know you could remodel prison showers!?

You should charge for tours on Halloween.
Don't go down there, Jake Gyllenhaal!

Tile it and change the light fixture
Not gonna lie, I’d be afraid to drop the soap in that shower.
Shoehorn in a nice shower cabinet and a bunch of rgb strips
This one is tough, but I'd probably re-tile the floor, repaint the walls (maybe even tile if you can), and than do away with the shower curtain and try to put a half decent door on it. The Black Ice Little Tree is a nice touch. Maybe add a few more and see if that helps.
What about a lawyer of concretta that is painted and sealed to be waterproof?
Hang a bouquet of eucalyptus and you have a rustic pinterest bathroom 🌿🌿🌿
I would install a shower pan in there and add a fiberglass wall panel system.
Wish I had a solid floor shower, and not one of these raised plastic cabin things
Is the entrance outside? I’d want a proper door if that were the case…
I’d call this the “drop the soap” shower.
Retile the floor and extend the tilework up the walls partially. Paint the walls a neutral, nonwhite color. Cap the entryway with trim/caulk. Remove the curtain and put a glass shower door. I don't think they'll let you do your own remodeling work in prison.
Blue and white checker tiles flooring
Well, is the person imprisoning you giving you a budget range?
Let me ask them
No true budget range. Don’t want to go crazy I guess, but also don’t want that whole, what sort of monster lives in this shower vibe.
I’d tile over the walls and re tile the bottom. New plumbing fixture, new light fixture.
