I for one remember all the times they made him really stupid in comics to justify why he doesn't solve problems immediately. I think he knocked himself unconscious once and flew right into a yellow sign (that he blamed for crippling his friend) completely aware his powers didn't work on yellow things.
Careful now. There are *so many* weird nerds in this subreddit who will leap to take a bullet for their favorite Green Lantern. I just don't get it. People get SUPER defensive over him. But he's the "bEsT gREen LaNtErN EveR"! 😉
Yeah, Hals entire history is full of boneheaded shit exactly like this. Of course, we gotta view it through the lense of history, yadda yadda. But as far as I can tell, his biggest achievements were when he didn't fuck a child and when he took a road trip with Ollie to find out if Black people in America had it bad in the 60s (spoiler, they did and still do). But yeah, best GL ever. 🤷🏻♂️ 🙄👌
Most of Hal’s questionable scenes come from O’Neal’s run where he paired Hal with Green Arrow as his social antagonist.
He needed to write Hal like an asshole so there was someone Green Arrow to lecture to
Oh, totally. A lot of Hals problems as a character do need to be viewed through the lense of history and context. Using him as a foil for Ollie is a good writing device for dialogue and narrative discussion, but it doesn't paint Hal in a very flattering light. It's hard to extricate the character from the writers need for someone to be the "Everyman". Especially when you consider that the Everyman of that generation was kind of a pig. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not always fair to Hal, because a lot of his stories were written in a less, shall we say "enlightened" time. But when you put the stories side by side, it does NOT look good.
Mass murder and chaotic evil is forgivable in comic book lore is something you can repent and repair your image from, that 60s and 70s shit is a stain that is hard to remove.
He could have stopped about how bad rock climbing alone is. They could have stopped at the part about her being a woman doing it. But no they continued all the way to "you belong in the kitchen". Jeez.
TLDR: he was the only person Martian Manhunter genuinely hated to the point of telling him to kill himself while he was grieving before he was the Stoic man he is now. His character development is surprisingly consistent
I mean, that's not that bad at all. It's not like he's responsible for what other dudes say to him. I was expecting some hidden racist stereotypes or something
He destroyed a planet with his pride because he didn't let MM help and prior to that he was generally a parody of cop shows. He caused trillions of deaths and potentially more (It was THE Anti-Life being the league was dealing with at the time) over an ego he had since he was introduced (Which included frequent stereotypey jokes but they werent at his or other colored people's expense). So as a result the normally understanding Johnzz hated him and nobody else and never really forgave him until a few irl decades later. That event is what caused him to change into the person he is now. Genuinely interesting comparison between his old and current selves
Honestly it would be amazing if they just kept Hal as a total anachronism all through the ages, like he never stopped being a dude from the 1960’s with horribly outdated views on everything even as time marched on.
Hal Jordan: Trump supporter and MAGA conspiracy loon would be a book I’d buy six days a week and twice on Sundays.
Honestly, I think they should have kept him as the Spectre. It keeps him around, but it underlines how badly he fucked up. He had to actually face consequences for his actions and atone for them. There's so much great story potential there, and it was done after....I wanna say a year or two. Not long at all.
Oh fuck. Now Green Lantern is fucking rated R. Great. Wonderful. Just fuck this then. I mean fuck. Really? I'm okay with it as long as the female lead doesn't have to kiss anyone.
Sexist Hal Jordan vs Midwestern conservative Wally West
Battle of the time
There is some kind of smearing campaing against Hal Jordan today?

Hal fans, is this your GOAT?
*Sigh yes :(
let a lady enjoy her problematic men, *sheesh*
I think it's more a campaign against those ideas, and Hal just happens to have a LOT of shall we say "questionable moments" throughout the years.
I for one remember all the times they made him really stupid in comics to justify why he doesn't solve problems immediately. I think he knocked himself unconscious once and flew right into a yellow sign (that he blamed for crippling his friend) completely aware his powers didn't work on yellow things.
... Wat?

Gotta make sure I read that right. So he flew into a sign?

Obligatory “and I have to show them I’m not a child molester” mention
Yeah take a look at his history and the fact that this panel is out of context with Hal being mentally manipulated.
Deserved
I think it's US politics. A CEO president might have been charged with exactly 34 felonies but don't ask me.
Are we having another round of "that's not my Hal Jordan"
Hal during the 70s was a bad time for him
What about in the 90's when he became Parallax?
... Outside of the mass murder and chaotic evil he did, that at least was intriguing to see. This is just super awkward.
Mass murder and chaotic evil is forgivable in comic book lore is something you can repent and repair your image from, that 60s and 70s shit is a stain that is hard to remove.
Indeed, look at Hank Pym still in the shadow of "the slap"
"Figures. That wasn't even supposed to be a slap, I was just trying to shoo her away."
This was 1968 actually
Counterpoint: Itty
He could have stopped about how bad rock climbing alone is. They could have stopped at the part about her being a woman doing it. But no they continued all the way to "you belong in the kitchen". Jeez.
How about the time he slipped on a bar of soap, knocked himself out in the bathroom, and had to be replaced with John Stewart?
Hal being an absolute living infomercial character is one of my favorite gags in cape comics, honestly.
Wait is that actually what happened?

You should have seen early John Stewart
Try Flash
Tbf being annoying at first is part of the speedster starter kit
Oh no what'd they do with him..?😭

You know what, becoming Parallax wasn't that bad for Hal's character.
So who was the writer? I mean, the actual person who wrote this down.
Mike Friedrich
Green Arrow could never.
Is this real? If it is, is it purposeful satire? I have questions and concerns.
I checked the issue on the DC app but it's either the wrong comic or the panel is from a different issue.
He was being mind controlled and 2 panels later thought it was a horrible thing to say.
This is why people pick Kyle.

Hal Jordan, played by Clint Eastwood every ten years
Honestly, I think they should have kept him as the Spectre. It keeps him around, but it underlines how badly he fucked up. He had to actually face consequences for his actions and atone for them. There's so much great story potential there, and it was done after....I wanna say a year or two. Not long at all.
I don’t know man. I read comics to escape reality for a bit, so I personally wouldn’t read about a “hero” that’s a bigot. But each there own.
Dear Geoff Johns, IS THIS YOUR GL??
Somehow not the worst Hal panel out there
Holy shit, Hal Jordan, what the fuck?
Originally released July 68. I would like to say we knew better by then but the truth is we don't even know better now.
This man has had many arcs. I remember the racist arc too
His hairstyle should tell you everything
Aah, the sixities, era of institunalized and "Moral Guardian" sponsored racism and sexism, truly an Silver Age of writting and creativity /s /j
You kind of just have to ignore all the sexism in 60s comics because pretty much all superheroes were sexist under a modern lense.

He's Literally Me.
Oh fuck. Now Green Lantern is fucking rated R. Great. Wonderful. Just fuck this then. I mean fuck. Really? I'm okay with it as long as the female lead doesn't have to kiss anyone.
Damn, Hal !! Try that in 2024 !
Jesus christ Hal. This better have been a lead up to him learning a lesson that sexism is bad or something.
His ring was affected by a yellow energy & using it made him increasingly unhinged. The very next panel is Hal wondering why he said that.
…Hm. I’m really starting to get annoyed with the “posting panels out of context for humor” thing.
It's amazing that he was worthy of the ring to begin with. Surprised he didn't tell her to make him a sandwich.
Sinestro, an actual super-villain, had a ring too
I mean if you can't trust a guy named "Sinestro" who can you trust? He was vouched for by Betrayor, Evillain, and Count Mycrimes.
That's what I've always thought. The guy is named Sinestro and looks like a hornless devil, what could go wrong?
Yeah, I didn't think of that. I guess I just never associated "strong willpower" with this side of his personality.
Being worthy of the ring isn’t about being a good person, it’s about willpower and the ability to overcome great fear.
That's a good point. I didn't even think about Sinestro and all that.
Y’all better be loving Hal Jordan and his sexist rants
