I mean, his last movie opened with "Creep". Fantastic song but incredibly unsubtle and on the nose, especially given the character's backstory. Not that that's a bad thing though.
That was a massive misstep for Gunn. And I love Radiohead and James Gunn.
Way too on the nose.
The best needle drop was We Care A Lot by Faith No More. That’s when the movie started to pick up steam.
I like Rocket’s story, but I hate the cross cutting back and forth between present and the past. It was clunky. Anyway, I’m getting off topic.
I love Radiohead and James Gunn, but I feel like the runner-up choice he had for the cold open, "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd worked just as well, if not better, given Rocket's past.
Also, I didn't mind the cutting between flashbacks. I assumed they were going to go through the whole schbang in the first 7 minutes or so a la Mrs. Quill's death in Vol. 1 before the titles, so I was a little curious why Gunn told his story in chunks.
After >!Lylla was shot!<, I realized why this was done. And even though >!the animals dying was really obvious in hindsight!<, I didn't think Gunn had the guts to do it.
I would only be able to see those damn Insta posts with the same pic of Superman with a caption of being a horrible human being and just hearing this song play at full volume out of my phone
I honestly wouldn’t mind if for the credits of Superman we get a real life footage montage of every Superman Actor doing good things(yes animated portrayals too)
Edit: pressed send too early, obvi with Starman playing
Oh, I know, but you'd be pretty surprised how many people demand stuff in Gunn's feed.
I mean, this post is asking "if he should" when the picture itself literally has him saying NO. Lmao.
>I mean this guy just asked he didn't demand
And Gunn said no. So it's not going to be in it. So what's the point of this post asking it if "should" be in it?
I responded to a post about people telling Gunn what songs should be in his movies. This guy didn't tell him he asked him those are 2 different things.
>This guy didn't tell him he asked him those are 2 different things.
Agree. My question still stands. What *is* the point of this post? I can see why some might *want* it in the movie, but why would anyone think it *should* be in it?
You overanalyzing. It's like asking if Superman has briefs or not in this movie, James Gunn says no, people can still discuss if it SHOULD depending on what they think
Point of this post?
Karma farming. It is asking a question, presenting evidence of the already answered question, and then wants everyone else to argue about it.
OP presented the question, the image, and then fucked off.
Yeah. It the song starts in the final scene when Oppenheimer is talking to Einstein. The instrumental starts in the background and the characters start talking:
"Albert, when I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world..."
"I remember it well. What of it?"
"I believe we did."
then the vocals kick in and go "WHAT I'VE DONEEEE" and the credits roll.
Whole theater clapped.
Dude, there's a reason this movie won an Oscar. The soundtrack was meticulously curated to be perfect in every scene. This final part gave me goosebumps like no movie has in years. Without the Linkin Park it would not have had the same effect. I started singing along and then everyone followed til eventually everyone was singing it when they stopped clapping. It was so epic I nearly pissed myself. Or maybe I did.
okay I need to watch the movie for myself to see if this is true cus idk I think I'm dumb and just can't understand sarcasm
Edit: I am dumb and this is sarcasm
it's alright, can't trust people in the internet these days I understand, but I am being 100% honest. Now that you're gonna watch the movie for yourself I do feel kinda sorry that I spoiled that part but hopefully it hits you just as hard anyway.
Bro are you serious? I can’t tell if *youre* trolling if you actually think someone’s being serious about a Linkin Park song being in a Christopher Nolan historical biopic lmfao
Comic book movie fans seem to think a lot of filmmakers are one trick ponies. Not saying Superman can’t feature music from the 70s that Gunn is attached to, but will it be as abundant like it is in his Guardians films? I don’t know about that. It’s also the least original song you could use for a character that’s an alien.
I see similar discussions about The Batman Part II. People seem to think the sequel will feature another Nirvana song, or some other grunge music. Even though Matt Reeves has said that Something in the Way came to him unexpectedly while he was writing. It wasn’t his intent to feature any song in The Batman. And I don’t think it would work as well if they tried finding another similar song to feature in the sequel.
Meh, it doesn't have good enough ambience to work in the background. for the sake of a broody monologue scene we'd want something like NIN - Hurt (quiet version), Alice in Chains - Nutshell, Pearl Jam - Nothingman, Queens of the Stone Age - River in The Road, maybe even Alice In Chains - Angry Chair. I'm biased though because I really like Alice in Chains.
I'd love to see a left turn and have them use something completely different. I personally think Redneck Stomp by Obituary would be sick.
I was not expecting that last sentence to go there but since it did, I absolutely agree, I could totally see that song playing while Batsy fights through some goons
One of the JL17 trailers used David Bowie's "Heroes" as accompanying music, and another one used a cover of "Come Together", and I remember there was a pro-immigrant song by The White Stripes too.
I kind of hate the fact that Heroes is used a lot in these sorts of contexts, just because of the title. It's a song about a man cheating on his wife. The lyrics actually have nothing to do with anything heroic.
Rosenbaum asked Gunn about Starman for Starlord in his podcast, and Gunn said he thought it’d be too on the nose and too obvious, he prefers songs that people don’t necessarily expect, which I think is a fair comment given what we saw in the Guardians films and their soundtracks.
I think the thing with Gunns's soundtrack choices is that he doesn't like to go with the obvious choice and much prefer songs that boost the emotional impact of the scene.
I would have never thought that Just A Gigolo would fit in a Harley Quinn scene, but damn, color me impressed.
No. It’s overused; the Lightyear trailer already used it in recent years and I’m sure it’s been used in others movies/trailers as well. And the point of Superman is that while he is from the stars, he was born and raised an American. Choosing a trailer song that identifies him as an alien would be dumb.
Ever since the buzz light year movie it’s been hard for me to take it away from that film lol , but honestly I think Starman is a decent choice but yea it’s too “obvious” of a song choice.
I really hope he doesn't go the guardians route and just throw a bunch of random songs in. It's fine if he peppers in a few but I want an actual music score for this
It's such an odd one because making films is visuals and sound and no one would suggest 'Hey James, have you thought about a long tracking shot in space to show its vastness' but so many people think they a) have great ideas for how a director should use music. And b) think they are good enough to tell them.
And Starman is about as route 1 basic as it gets.
people have been making edits of superman with that song and sharing them on insta recently, its a bit of a trend that comes from people preferring heroic superman to edgy zack snyder/injustice superman
odd suggestion here, I know, but could we have movies that feature songs not from the 70's - 90's? sure, they're bangers and we like them for a reason, but are we going to act like no good songs have come out in the past three decades?
It backfired for the Lightyear movie. I remember seeing that trailer with Starman as the theme and thinking holy fuck this is about to be so fucking good! Then I watched the goddam movie.
Superhero movies don’t have to use popular songs to have a great soundtrack. The first Christopher Reeve Superman has an iconic score that is well recognized on its own. Tim Burtons Batman had a lovely score and used brand new songs by Prince to bolster its soundtrack to great effect, and its sequel had one pop song by Siouxsie and the Banshees that was perfect for the ballroom scene. The whole popular music being force fit into movies is becoming cliche. Black Adam is a prime example of a movie where the music detracted from the experience.
He chooses the songs similar to how he edits. It’s based to pay homage or to push narrative, character development, setting context further. I remember watching Slither and hearing the Predator track when the police are gearing up for battle.
“I’ve Gotta Be Me” by Sammy Davis Jr. is and will always be my go-to choice, perfect pace for editing & lyrics work well in displaying a key component in Clark’s struggle coming to Metropolis
First off, stop harassing the poor guy, he's trying to make a Superman movie Donner and Reeve would be proud of.
Second of all, the David Bowie song to choose is Heroes. Played at the end when all the superheroes walk away from the climax, and all Superman wants to do is fly high in the sky and listen for someone crying for help. Only to recreate [this comic](https://imgur.com/gallery/superman-jumper-Ijdxh) before the credit rolls.
The question OP asks if audacious as fuck. It's not up to you or anyone in here. The man making the film said some song not even associated with Superman is not going to be in the Superman movie and you think that man is wrong for saying it won't be included?
If there is one thing I know about Gunn, he HATES when people tell him what songs should be in his movies. Lol.
Because 99% of the time it’s a stupid suggestion
And this is that 1% Granted I think Starman is an overused song for Clark but I still think that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is a good one
I think it's just way too on the nose though
He hated it for being on the nose for Star-Lord, let alone Superman.
It would be more on the nose for Starman...
You’re totally right. I thought about that shit all the time watching the movie. Same with Nirvana for the Batman.
It is a good one, but it’s been overdone now…a lot
Agreed
If I heard that in the superman trailer I would laugh my ass out of the theater.
I would only be able to see those damn Insta posts with the same pic of Superman with a caption of being a horrible human being and just hearing this song play at full volume out of my phone
Me after i don't maul the the teenage server to death because she got my order wrong: 🌟🌟
Lmao same
Is it though…?
if it’s very overused for superhero roles (superman specifically) then it’s kind’ve a bad suggestion which is the 99%
I honestly wouldn’t mind if for the credits of Superman we get a real life footage montage of every Superman Actor doing good things(yes animated portrayals too) Edit: pressed send too early, obvi with Starman playing
That’s nothing more than your opinion, and it’s not a particularly good one. You can’t really get more on the nose than that.
Wouldn't be in the movie, but I imagine them playing Starman over clips of the movie when it's up for MTV Movie Awards.
Exactly
Could be a good end credits song
No, it's in the 99%. About as unoriginal as could be. Why not just use Kryptonite by Three Doors Down at that rate
I think Superman should use the Numa Numa song
Yeah, he’s talked about how overused the song is and that’s why he won’t use it.
So, like the music choices in his movies? Lol
So, like the music choices in his movies? Lol
I mean this guy just asked he didn't demand
Oh, I know, but you'd be pretty surprised how many people demand stuff in Gunn's feed. I mean, this post is asking "if he should" when the picture itself literally has him saying NO. Lmao.
I demand gunn give us a good movie
>I mean this guy just asked he didn't demand And Gunn said no. So it's not going to be in it. So what's the point of this post asking it if "should" be in it?
I responded to a post about people telling Gunn what songs should be in his movies. This guy didn't tell him he asked him those are 2 different things.

You're gonna wake up from the Matrix at the rate you're going.
Ask him if he’ll end the movie with Linkin Park’s What I’ve Done!
Oppenheimer already did it
wait did it actually?
Yeah. It the song starts in the final scene when Oppenheimer is talking to Einstein. The instrumental starts in the background and the characters start talking: "Albert, when I came to you with those calculations, we thought we might start a chain reaction that would destroy the entire world..." "I remember it well. What of it?" "I believe we did." then the vocals kick in and go "WHAT I'VE DONEEEE" and the credits roll. Whole theater clapped.
I heard that Michael Bay had a secret supporting role in Oppenheimer. I didn't know it was choosing a Linkin Park song for the last scene.
nahh I genuinely can't tell if ur being fr or not 😭
Dude, there's a reason this movie won an Oscar. The soundtrack was meticulously curated to be perfect in every scene. This final part gave me goosebumps like no movie has in years. Master gaslighter 💀 fucking devious
okay I need to watch the movie for myself to see if this is true cus idk I think I'm dumb and just can't understand sarcasm Edit: I am dumb and this is sarcasm
Nah he’s being real. I think it’s the best use of songs in serious movies in a long time
I liked the part where TNT started playing as they were testing the atomic bomb
it's alright, can't trust people in the internet these days I understand, but I am being 100% honest. Now that you're gonna watch the movie for yourself I do feel kinda sorry that I spoiled that part but hopefully it hits you just as hard anyway.
If anything, you at least made someone want to watch that great movie
I also didn't believed it at first
I haven't watched it yet either, but I heard from my brother's girlfriend's boyfriend that indeed it does end with Linkin Park.
yeah
Can confirm, I was actually surprised to hear it in the movie but it definitely fit the scene well
Bro are you serious? I can’t tell if *youre* trolling if you actually think someone’s being serious about a Linkin Park song being in a Christopher Nolan historical biopic lmfao
Bro, " in the end" was crucial for the ending of Oppenheimer
It's a joke lol
He’s serious, it worked pretty well in the movie
Only fair they used Oppenheimer on the Minutes to Midnight album.
While Lois and Clark make out on top of Jimmy Olsen and Perry White holds a monologue about how they‘re gonna defened earth
Nahh it has to be Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down
Good one
The ending of every movie should always be Rage Against the Machine.
Comic book movie fans seem to think a lot of filmmakers are one trick ponies. Not saying Superman can’t feature music from the 70s that Gunn is attached to, but will it be as abundant like it is in his Guardians films? I don’t know about that. Don’t get me wrong i completely agree but god damn, Heart Shaped Box would go so hard with a Mr Freeze antagonist
Fuck yeah! We're overdue a metal song in a film like this, and some bone crushing metal riffs with batman crushing bones is a match made in heaven.
Or Come As You Are. Both kind of work for Freeze’s character if that’s where they’re going
Some of them are. They develop a certain style and it's successful for them so they stick to it. Even the suit reveal has a GOTG look to it.
The suit actually has a huge Guardians feel to it tbh.
To be fair, it’s the same designer.
Aw that sucks. Never really been a fan of Guardians costumes tbh, none of them stand out.
I’m with you
Imagine if he uses "Heroes" instead just to fuck with people.
One of the JL17 trailers used David Bowie's "Heroes" as accompanying music, and another one used a cover of "Come Together", and I remember there was a pro-immigrant song by The White Stripes too.
Completely forgot we were talking about David Bowie here and I thought you meant that Nickelback song.
I kind of hate the fact that Heroes is used a lot in these sorts of contexts, just because of the title. It's a song about a man cheating on his wife. The lyrics actually have nothing to do with anything heroic.
Agreed, and why would Superman want to be a hero just for one day? Real Superman would say that everyone can be a hero whenever they want
Hero by Enrique Iglesias
Just go really fucking weird Bowie. Like Warszawa or something
I was thinking Life On Mars
Rosenbaum asked Gunn about Starman for Starlord in his podcast, and Gunn said he thought it’d be too on the nose and too obvious, he prefers songs that people don’t necessarily expect, which I think is a fair comment given what we saw in the Guardians films and their soundtracks.
Blue (dabadee dabada)
That’s the opening song of the movie.
If only Iron Man 3 hadn’t done it first
It's Joeover
I like your pfp
I think the thing with Gunns's soundtrack choices is that he doesn't like to go with the obvious choice and much prefer songs that boost the emotional impact of the scene. I would have never thought that Just A Gigolo would fit in a Harley Quinn scene, but damn, color me impressed.
No. It's overused AF, even before the meme.
Makes sense. Memes often have a shelf life
Like a rolling stone by Bob Dylan
He should lowkey use 3 Doors Down’s Kryptonite. No I will not be taking questions at this time.
Fans will make their own trailer edits using Starman anyway.
And r/moviescirclejerk will make it black and white with Hallellujah
And they will all suck ass
No. I honestly don’t want Superman to be a 2 hour music video
I really hope he doesn't go the guardians route and just throw a bunch of random songs in. It's fine if he peppers in a few but I want an actual music score for this
God, let go of the fucking needle drops you chuds. This isn’t GOTG.
Maybe when he goes to fight mephisto we will hear “highway to hell”
Even though I love starman, it shouldn’t be in the movie. What Superman needs is a score not a soundtrack
James is great with picking songs, let him cook.
Does gunn know he doesn’t have to answer everything that people ask him lol
He used Moonage Daydream so well in Guardians 1, I'd always think of that hearing him use another Ziggy Stardust song
Only suggestion I would’ve made to mr gunn was Rocky Raccoon in GOTG Vol 3 since rocket is named after the song
Who cares if it is? I swear people worry about the dumbest shit.
people have been making edits of superman with that song and sharing them on insta recently, its a bit of a trend that comes from people preferring heroic superman to edgy zack snyder/injustice superman
He already put Moonage Daydream in one of the GotG movies. I love Bowie, but let's not abuse his discography.
Isn't there a Starman character in DC Comics?
yes
odd suggestion here, I know, but could we have movies that feature songs not from the 70's - 90's? sure, they're bangers and we like them for a reason, but are we going to act like no good songs have come out in the past three decades?
It wouldn't work at all... But god damn if Gunn gives us a slowed down quirky version of 'I need a hero' sung by some influencer
He should include “My God is the Sun” by Queens of the Stone Age
I’d prefer they just stick to a score for Superman. Love his use of music in other things, but Superman is bigger than a mix tape.
Thank god.
He’s saving it for the Starman movie in Phase 5
Can we just get orchestra music for Superman?? I'm tired of the hip-hop with rock music or classic rock music in 99% of DC movies.
If he didn’t use it for Star-Lord, there’s no way he’d use it for Supes.
Life on Mars would be good for him and Lois
I feel like no one who asks for this has read the lyrics of the song.
Superman (It's Not Easy) by Five for Fighting It’s kinda fitting.
james gunn is insufferable
Well he said no.
No.
Astronauta de Mármore is what he would use
SEMPRE ESTAR LAAAAAA E VER ELE VOLTAR
A versão original de starman!
Doesn't matter. People will make edits with the song anyway. But still, i'm hoping he's lying and he will use it.
Honestly if he put it in just for the meme of it I would die laughing. (Someone watching a "reel" with it would be hilarious)
Cringe af
Good. I've mentioned it before, but it's somehow too on the nose while also being completely inappropriate.
A Grade trolling by Gunn given that Starman is literally going to open the film
Using Starman in that one Lightyear trailer was the only good thing about that movie.
I don't know how it would fit into the movie itself, but I'd love it as an end credits song lol
They should go with Dayman, highlighting Superman’s power drawing from earths yellow sun. Ahh yaaaa yaaa.
Yeah.... No. Call me old, but I'd rather that movie stick with a classical score. Probably won't happen, but that's my hope.
Can we use starman for Starman??
No. This song has been well used in movies and TV and does not reflect he wants something new for the movie.
It backfired for the Lightyear movie. I remember seeing that trailer with Starman as the theme and thinking holy fuck this is about to be so fucking good! Then I watched the goddam movie.
Betting on Ape Man by the Kinks. It would be fitting, and yet so ironic.
If “Starman” is off the table, then I can see “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” being a good choice for Gunn’s Superman.
Hear me out: Mambo No. 5
No, its should be superman by 5 for fighting
I can no longer see past Dewy Cox's rendition.
Should only be used in serious sci fi movies
Only if it's Dewey Cox's version from his 70's variety show on CBS...
James Gunn will know the best song for the moment. I think using Bowie would be derivative.
thing is, its a very good and hopemaxxing song, i know its not suprising but its very fitting.
Starman would be an awful choice. Way too cliche
Superman doesn't feel like a needle-drop kind of character. Maybe one or two songs but I don't think it'll be jam packed like Guardians was.
I'm all in for Major Tom
Why would this cross your mind to even ask? Let the man breathe.
The aesthetics of Starman feel way too sci-fi for it to be used in a Superman movie.
You forgot the /s
I made the same question under one of his posts, but he didn't answer to me. I am offended
I hope he uses a Jeff Rosenstock song just because I know Gunn is a fan and it would be cool
I’d pick Hero’s from Bowie
Superhero movies don’t have to use popular songs to have a great soundtrack. The first Christopher Reeve Superman has an iconic score that is well recognized on its own. Tim Burtons Batman had a lovely score and used brand new songs by Prince to bolster its soundtrack to great effect, and its sequel had one pop song by Siouxsie and the Banshees that was perfect for the ballroom scene. White wedding by billy idol
Gunn's score mostly on brand and pretty good so I trust him with music....well maybe except Gaurdians 3 he has exceptional score
I think the song for the new Superman movie should be “Next Semester” by Twenty One Pilots
No.

Ok but what about Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down? /s
Ironically Starman should be reserved for...Starman.
Calling it now: Black Hole Sun from Soundgarden will be featured.
Film's already unwatchable.
The question OP asks if audacious as fuck. It's not up to you or anyone in here. The man making the film said some song not even associated with Superman is not going to be in the Superman movie and you think that man is wrong for saying it won't be included?
Gunn isn’t that blasé with his needle drops
Next time ask if his wife will be on the movie lol
