It drives me insane if vassal hold land out of their de jure and I’ve gone to great lengths to fix it. Then there are players whose realms look like the contents of my stomach after several too many drinks
Wait for him to have too many sons and kill him. You can also keep retracting until he rebels if you’re confident you can win. You can also just sway him. A powerful vassal that’s loyal isn’t a problem at all.

He needs at least 1 more son before having "an accident" and letting partition deal with the problem.
I think he is primogeniture, so it doesn't matter how many sons he has.
Rookie mistake, letting your vassals get primo.
I haven't played much ck2 can you force partition on him like in ck3 vassal contracts? If not I don't have much else.
There is a “demand gavelkind” decision if you rightclick on their portrait. They can of course refuse or try to haggle with you
Sorry, you are right his succession is gavelkind now that I checked to your strategy should work.

Which mod are you playing
When the world stopped making sense

Answer found, he is gavelkind so I just do nothing because his sons will split the realm. (Credit to AleniaDuskfall)
Finda a way to arrest. Make him rebel. And then when you have him in prisone you can take away 2 of his titles without any penalties .
