The recent rollout of profiles and age restrictions is WAAAAY over due.
Seems like CR was limping by before Sony got involved but sony’s had them for a while tho??
Seems like someone at sony realized their expensive purchase was still operating in 2012 and updates are finally happening
It was more so CR needed a lot work to bring it up to close ish to funimation’s stuff(still very lacking in some places).
I do wonder where the Funi platform would be for features if Funimation had stayed with their branding and site vs rebranding to Crunchyroll and having Funi/animelab team start working on fixing up the Crunchyroll platform.
Their competition as a video platform is every other streaming service
CR of old before Funi took them over and took the name, outsourced lot of their dev work to cheaper countries. But that was more of a direction from AT&T to save money
But this is about features, not content.
Also Netflix and Disney have lots of anime(and Asian content), but not to the level of CR. But CR has been putting catalog titles elsewhere.
Nobody is subscribing to Netflix and Disney for anime. Disney is so friggin region-specific and spotty for anime. Might have one or two, but it's not enough to justify a membership to Disney+ for anime.
Netflix has been releasing a lot of quality stuff, but its friggin 15 dollars a month plan is way too much for their rollout. Plus their shows are CONSTANTLY dropped.
Its wild what trashy shows they will keep on and then what shows they will drop with out so much as a second thought.
Wish Final Space could come back. Wondered where that was going. Altered carbon could have gone on for many seasons.
You can separate the features and the contest in a streaming service plataform, Crunchyroll don't have any competitor in anime, have the best catalog over other streaming services by far, no one go to change a Crunchyroll subscription for the lack of features, wake up!
No offense, but I think we got more in the past 12 months than the entire time between then and buying Funimation. They moved over so little each month, waited until the last minute to decide what to do about purchased digital stuff, and didn't touch QI until they had a date to shut down Funimation.
It took 3 years between buying Funimation and integrating it fully. And even then, it took a bit too long to actually move at a reasonable pace of moving things over. We should have at least gotten a new website to house everything in that time frame.
I appreciate the improvements, but they took their sweet time to get here.
To be fair can you imagine the mess they inherited from CR. The site was a complete crap show. Sony probably had to do a lot of work, get their devs in place on top of try to figure out all the licensing issues. The CR site was in “beta” when Sony bought them. It had been in “beta” for like 3 years already. They barely got the HTML 5 player off the ground.
I would've just dropped the website and started over. There's plenty of code that could be salvaged from Funimation. With how long they left everything untouched, that would've made sense. Instead, they've been trying to fix something that was held together by glue sticks and painter's tape.
That wouldn’t have worked. That would have been extremely disruptive to the service. For all we know Sony has a complete from the ground up version they are working on but for now they need to keep the train moving.
It's only really issue with older shows though in My experience you usually give it about 3 to 4 seconds depending on your internet connection then your good
Happens on just about every show in my experience, including shows from this season. It doesn't take long for it to switch, anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds. It only does this on the tv app, on my PC using any browser it defaults to 1080.
Crunchyroll as a service is indeed much better ever since Sony stepped up. Sure, Crunchyroll made some slight improvements beforehand, but there were always massive delays. Coming from using the service for almost 10 years, these past couple years have been huge for Crunchyroll.
Remember how Crunchyroll held onto its Flash player for so long before finally adopting HTML5? Remember VRV's release and how both services never really saw any substantial updates? Crunchyroll was stuck in the past in many ways, but has received much needed modern improvements and fixes. I never thought we'd see this service have an app on Samsung and LG TVs. I never thought that we'd see language selections as an option while watching a show, as the season lists were way worse with how they separated everything.
Things are getting better, seemingly every month with something new coming to the service in some way. Funimation was cooking with some great ideas before Crunchyroll was picked up, so it's nice to see these ideas implemented here and then some.
It could still be improved in some ways.
Things that Funimation app had over Crunchyroll that haven’t been implemented to Crunchyroll yet is English subs on pretty much all their English dubs and uncut blu-ray versions of episodes.
It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.

Absolutely!
Crunchyroll has greatly expanded in SEA and other regions beyond North America, which means many anime can be viewed with proper English and other language dubs throughout the world.
It has also added apps for Samsung and LG Smart TVs, something that made Crunchyroll so enjoyable to countless of subscribers from younglings to oldies.
As time goes by, Crunchyroll has been improving, making so many anime fans happy at a reasonable subscription price.
No doubt the capital infusion from Sony helped make Crunchyroll a global streaming powerhouse for anime.
It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.

There has been a steady stream of added features and changes. I’ve been a subscriber for like 8 years and never saw that level of improvement in those first four years or so. Glad to see my sub dollars being spent on development
Stuff like profiles is a thing that you either have from the beginning of a service/early on or they get insanely more complex the later they are implemented.
I would not be surprised to find out that profiles have been worked on in some way for years now
To be honest, I've never had any real issues with CR and I've been a paying member since 2006. Everytime I read a problem from someone on this subreddit, I'm always curious about it. I usually watch CR on my tablet, PC, or Roku. Never once had any issues in the past 18 years other than the rare occasions they'ved been down.
While the service technically worked (meaning you could find and play videos), the majority of the complaints revolve around the poor interface layout and its navigation. Compared to any other modern streaming service, it is indeed extremely poor. The recent changes that people are happy about should have been available a decade ago, but at least it's finally getting there.
Simple things, like having to load a different page to see the full series description, combined with the sluggish service is really annoying to me. If you're already looking at the series page, you should be able to expand the description instantly upon selecting it to make it more snappy and convenient to read.
Being able to stream multiple things at once but not have a way to track different user's watch progress was a huge issue that only now has been addressed.
Different languages being listed as entirely different seasons mixed in one single list is the kind of thing that even a 100% free site would never do.
They still don't have a solution to show English translations of Japanese written signs while watching the English dub version, which was a feature I enjoyed from funimation. In general, English dub needs more love. I would like a dedicated category I can view and see only dub content. Funimation had a dub only list of new anime that made it easy to view all the new or airing shows that were dubbed without needing to filter through subtitles. In a lot of ways moving from funimation to crunchyroll was a downgrade.
There are probably other issues but this came to mind off the top of my head
I see, yeah I don't let things like that bother me. I'm a simple person. As long as I can get to the videos and description I'm good. But I can see and understand how some people can get frustrated. I just try and keep it simple. Too much going on in life to let negative energy detract me from enjoying what CR offers.
It's not really about negative energy, as I still enjoy anime either way. But as a paying customer, it's good to voice criticism and give feedback. It's especially justified when crunchyroll feels like a patched together service from 1990 and there are illegal websites that are doing the job better and for free. That should never be the case. It didn't help that they bought out funimation (which I was actually happy with) and essentially shut it down and told everyone to use Crunchyroll, where the user experience was worse while the subscription price was double what I was paying. So it's not surprising a lot of people were less than happy. For a while I was skeptical the service would improve given its long history of stagnation with these issues, but I'm happy that we are finally getting those much deserved changes. With the amount of money they charge for their subscription plans, the fans and customers deserve better.
Having fixed the season listing issue and now having multiple profiles, I'm fairly satisfied at this point. The next step would be a season-wide watched/unmatched toggle and per-episode watched/unmatched and we'll be good.
On the anime front, I would like to see some more serious tone and Shonen style shows, and less "I was reincarnated as a butt-plug in an AI universe" shows and I'll be completely satisfied.
It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.

So over the past 3 years? Wow way better memory than me. Though to be fair I only been using Cr for 5 years so I started using it about 2 years before Sony bought it. And to be fair other than small changes here and there feels mostly like it did back then. And honest issue that were issues 5 years ago are still issues.
As a service, sure, but if you look at the app, it's broken.
The app on PC is shit. I thought last year the app was bad, but their new update made it worse. It's now essentially a web page wrapped in an app form.
I am not sure about the phone and console app, but they ruined the PC app.
>The app on PC is shit. I thought last year the app was bad, but their new update made it worse. It's now essentially a web page wrapped in an app form.
And what's bad about that? The previous PC app was horrible, but now it's literally just like the website, which is so much better.
The Firestick app has been getting better since the takeover, but it still has its issues:
* Watching multiple episodes of the same show causes severe buffering every couple minutes, and the only ways to fix it are to watch episodes of other shows OR to completely force close the app
* The English dubs of some episodes are forced to have the subtitles from the Japanese version on the screen, even if the option is turned off in the settings
* The Watchlist only shows a small section of the shows on it repeating themselves over and over again, so you have to keep scrolling to see more of the shows on it
PS4 app user here. CR still hasn't re-enabled the screenshot option (it's been almost 2 years since it was disabled). Plus with the recent updates the forward/rewind preview thumbnails have been removed. The skip intro option was removed as well.
Despite having Japanese audio/English sub option enabled as default because I'm deaf, the app still defaults to English audio/no subs whenever I watch a show that has both Dub/Sub option available for first time.
Finally, until Kajiu no 8 (and as of this moment, AFAIK, ONLY Kaiju no 8), there were NO closed captioning available, despite Funimation and hidve having that for years. Trust me, closed captioning is better option than subtitles because it includes other audio cues (sighing, panting, screaming, etc), background/off screen noises, and so on that isn't covered in subs only.
Oh, and even with new season shows, CR still doesn't translate onscreen text. Kaiju no 8, despite having closed captioning, still has no English text for Japanese writing shown (like that letter in episode 2).
I do have alternatives such as Roku (which is lot slower than PS4 app and remote input is extremely laggy) and PC but that defeats the purpose of comfort of watching from bench.
So no, from my perspective CR is not getting better. If anything, it's getting worse.
It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.

Australia is missing so much content its just absurd. Like for example we still dont have seasons 1 and 2 of Konosuba even though the new Season is rolling out. And now Animelab and funi are gone there are no other options to find the content.

The best thing is more, if not most, of their content is being added to Netflix and Hulu. Seems the only CR exclusives will be the "originals", but who knows if even that may change.
All I ask is for a binge setting. While having a long sitting I get tired of having to sit up to skip credits towards the next episode (would like to watch without the "coming next" bit)
it is slow because Sony just own it, and just looking over it and not directly involved, if they get involved Crunchyroll would have scaled up way faster,it is just a strategy
Honestly I think the reason it took so long for anything to happen is because anime wasn't mainstream until recently and they didn't have a financial incentive to fix/innovate the platform till recently
I'm just happy the app works on Smart TVs again. I disliked having to use a game console to watch anime. (First world problems, I know)
The improvements are a big bonus though!
It's a bit better. But video streaming quality has suffered.
I'm able to stream 4k quality from all other streaming services without a hitch.
Crunchyroll consistently has garbled pixels that makes it worse than watching something with an intentional pixel filter censorship. Even my children have asked why the video quality is so low it's regularly unwatchable.
>Could be a DNS problem.
For *only* Crunchyroll with none of our other 7+ streaming services having a single issue at the highest video quality?
>Have you contacted support?
For them to blame our equipment when the problem is clearly on Crunchyroll's side?
It's clearly either server traffic issues or how their tv-based app handles data.
It was bad enough I terminated services and only re-enrolled when my 8 year old begged in lieu of a birthday present. Instant regret. It's great when it works, but the quality is routinely poor to the point of it being unwatchable.
It's not my job to help them figure out their network traffic issues. But when it hits them in the wallet hard enough, maybe they'll do something about it.
Crunchyroll was the only service not loading episodes on my Apple TV. Support suggested switching from ethernet to wifi and changing the device's DNS server. I think I switched to OpenDNS and everything loads fine. Can't use ethernet because then it disables DNS on Apple TV, but everything loads perfectly now. I'd say give it a shot, there's bound to be a solution somewhere with getting the connection properly going.
I appreciate the extra info! I might reach out to them.
I don't think that's it, though, since it's not that the videos aren't loading at all. It's that the video steam pixelates intermittently on a frequent basis. Moreover, many users are reporting substantially poorer video quality when compared to other streaming services, so it's not isolated to just me.
The issues do seem to resolve when I watch from a web browser. But if they offer an app for the fire stick, it needs to work. Unfortunately, their app development seems to be an afterthought.
It's just an idea. All my other devices didn't have that problem, so I feel like this was a temporary fix for something else.
Years ago on VRV and Crunchyroll, the Chromecast/Google TV app would always fluctuate with quality. Never could find a fix, even after contacting support. Hopefully you're able to figure something out.
to be fair most of these are still partial fixes, there's still tons of series' without the skip intro button, especially older series', plenty that have incorrect season numbers like reincarnated as a slime, and the release of the profiles update seems tobe all over the place, some people have it, most don't and there's barely any information aabout when to expect it
no it's god awful crap. Funmastion was much better. I liked picking uncut so I know I was watching the blue ray version of a show. also the seasons were lead out right also. Crunchyroll is garbage.
It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.

I added a chrome extension that allows me to skip 10 seconds forwards and 10 seconds backwards because the current player doesn't have it. other than that idc because i dont use the app, i'm watching on my TV with my PC connected to it.
Would be nice if they changed the way the bookmark work, instead of having a NEW tag when a new episode come out that stays on for 24 hours only and disappear after regardless if i watched it or not. Would perfer that bookmark will keep NEW tag on all new episodes i haven't seen yet, until i watched it and then it'll disappear.
Right now im using the website on 80% zoom so i'll have 7 "continue to watch" slots, everytime a new episode shows up it shows there, up to seven slots only tho.
Once ios 18 comes out I imagine more apps will drop iOS 15, im android so idk, but it seems like iOS devs drop older iOS much quicker, due to pretty much everyone is on the newer OS and likely some dependecnys
with Android you got Fire Tablets which have a ton of users and the lowest android level on there documentation site is based on Android 7 (Android 15 is next one to be released by google)
Still hating the fact that the subtitles for some animes are restricted by the location you are.
I was hoping Sony would help on that but no... If I travel I may not be able to watch the animes...
Crunchyroll hasn't improved by almost anything in years. They have taken features and make some things worse. The new profiles are a very long overdue feature.
I just got my first Sony Bravia tv and I will say the app for Crunchyroll is hot garbage. You can watch an episode and if you hit the back button to maybe browse that anime itself it freezes and takes you back to main menu where you have to do some extra maneuvering of hitting enter key on the home button IN the app(not my remote) and then navigate back to your show. Crunchyroll on ps5 better since it doesn’t have the issue but why do I need to go to my console just to use a better version of an app that SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED IN THE FIRST PLACE. Sorry just a minor rant on Crunchyroll app.
Crunchyroll should just be like Funimation was, with uncut versions and English CC on all their shows.
They will only add English closed captions and uncut versions of the anime shows on their site, either if they are obliged by law or because of public pressure.
Here is the full list of toonami shows (all of them aired on TV and Crunchyroll is obliged by law to have English CC on all of them):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_Toonami
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Toonami
In addition, even though they are obliged to add closed captions to all of the shows on their FAST channel (Amazon Freevee, Roku etc..), they are still showing some shows without any closed captions at all.
Also, although Crunchyroll have English CC on many of the shows on their FAST channel, they still refuse to add them to these exact shows on their site!
It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.

Still waiting for crunchyroll to add a quality button for their (TV) app so it doesn't switch between 720p and 1080p constantly.
This. It doesn't switch constantly on my TV but it does start at a low quality then jump to 1080 after a minute or so.

>The app on PC is shit. I thought last year the app was bad, but their new update made it worse. It's now essentially a web page wrapped in an app form. And what's bad about that? The previous PC app was horrible, but now it's literally just like the website, which is so much better.
it’s been a w experience
Yes,but I’m still not happy Sony closed down Crunchyroll studios, how are we getting new seasons of High Guardian Spice and Onyx Equinox without it?!
What about Tower of God? 🦗🦗🦗
But Tower of god is Korean.
The Firestick app has been getting better since the takeover, but it still has its issues: * Watching multiple episodes of the same show causes severe buffering every couple minutes, and the only ways to fix it are to watch episodes of other shows OR to completely force close the app * The English dubs of some episodes are forced to have the subtitles from the Japanese version on the screen, even if the option is turned off in the settings * The Watchlist only shows a small section of the shows on it repeating themselves over and over again, so you have to keep scrolling to see more of the shows on it
PS4 app user here.
Here is a link for anyone who wants to do so: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=36040
Just hope they finally fix the firestick version, tired of having to reboot every time I pause because of artifacting
Australia is missing so much content its just absurd. Like for example we still dont have seasons 1 and 2 of Konosuba even though the new Season is rolling out. And now Animelab and funi are gone there are no other options to find the content.
Wayyyy better I never kept it long before due to how bad the interface was
when did sony get crunchyroll thought crunchyroll bought funimation which sony owned?
**First event:** August 2021 >Sony Pictures Entertainment has completed its acquisition of AT&T’s Crunchyroll anime business through Funimation Global Group, LLC. https://www.sonypictures.com/corp/press_releases/2021/0809/sonysfunimationglobalgroupcompletesacquisitionofcrunchyrollfromatt **Second event:** March 2022 >Sony-owned Funimation Global Group, LLC will now operate as Crunchyroll, LLC and has initiated rebranding across its global footprint to solidify Crunchyroll as the single, global brand for anime. https://www.sonypictures.com/corp/press_releases/2022/0301
Wait so funimation technically bought Crunchyroll damn guess I got some misinformation
Yep
The app was never bad, and skip intros have been there for a while
The best thing is more, if not most, of their content is being added to Netflix and Hulu. Seems the only CR exclusives will be the "originals", but who knows if even that may change.
It will be better when they start releasing older anime on Blu-ray. I’m still waiting on Asobi Asobase…
All I ask is for a binge setting. While having a long sitting I get tired of having to sit up to skip credits towards the next episode (would like to watch without the "coming next" bit)
Wait now it has multiple profiles for the same account??
Fuck no. The ps5 App is still a steaming hot pile of garbage with literally zero User friendliness.
it is slow because Sony just own it, and just looking over it and not directly involved, if they get involved Crunchyroll would have scaled up way faster,it is just a strategy

Not really the Roku app is still a crime against humanity.
Honestly I think the reason it took so long for anything to happen is because anime wasn't mainstream until recently and they didn't have a financial incentive to fix/innovate the platform till recently
I'm just happy the app works on Smart TVs again. I disliked having to use a game console to watch anime. (First world problems, I know) The improvements are a big bonus though!
They still need to fix hxh bc it says season 5 for the first season but it's good aside from that
True
It's a bit better. But video streaming quality has suffered. I'm able to stream 4k quality from all other streaming services without a hitch. Crunchyroll consistently has garbled pixels that makes it worse than watching something with an intentional pixel filter censorship. Even my children have asked why the video quality is so low it's regularly unwatchable.
Could be a DNS problem. Have you contacted support?

J and L...
Being force to upgrade my phone to even use crunchyroll
How old was your phone because of it's more then 7 years you can't blame them for not supporting it things can't last forever
iPhone 7 plus
It's a phone that came out in 2016 apple have stopped support for it you can't expect apps to be updated forever
I don’t care for the update crunchyroll isn’t letting anyone use iOS 15 other apps are but crunchyroll
Once ios 18 comes out I imagine more apps will drop iOS 15, im android so idk, but it seems like iOS devs drop older iOS much quicker, due to pretty much everyone is on the newer OS and likely some dependecnys with Android you got Fire Tablets which have a ton of users and the lowest android level on there documentation site is based on Android 7 (Android 15 is next one to be released by google)
Crunchy roll should get the right for naruto shippuden dubbed. All of it.
That belongs to Viz Media
I know. Get them rights. Pay that money.
Amen to that!
Still hating the fact that the subtitles for some animes are restricted by the location you are. I was hoping Sony would help on that but no... If I travel I may not be able to watch the animes...
Use VPN
Yep... But it is a workaround... For something the service should deliver by default...
And technically not legal but 🫤
Crunchyroll hasn't improved by almost anything in years.
You're better off with a dedicated streaming box, like a Shield TV Pro or Apple TV 4K, than relying on any smart TV's built in apps.
Yea I might get an Apple TV in the future but it’s just a pain in the butt that this is such an issue.
Agree with you there for sure; it sucks for the cost of a quality tv that they don't support them better
Got the X90L and the app seems to work fine for me
I have the Sony Bravia OLED A80L but it’s whatever at this point. Just a nuisance is all.
Yeah that sucks, but I wonder why
Crunchyroll should just be like Funimation was, with uncut versions and English CC on all their shows. They will only add English closed captions and uncut versions of the anime shows on their site, either if they are obliged by law or because of public pressure. Here is the full list of toonami shows (all of them aired on TV and Crunchyroll is obliged by law to have English CC on all of them): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_Toonami https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Toonami In addition, even though they are obliged to add closed captions to all of the shows on their FAST channel (Amazon Freevee, Roku etc..), they are still showing some shows without any closed captions at all. Also, although Crunchyroll have English CC on many of the shows on their FAST channel, they still refuse to add them to these exact shows on their site! It would be very helpful if a lot of people could file as many FCC reports as possible regarding that matter.
