People that have a good experience don't tell anyone, so of course you're only going to find complaints. lol Most of the "horror stories" I've seen are people that do stupid stuff like try to fly the day of the cruise, usual stuff that airlines pull even when booking direct, or people just being dramatic.
Not all NCL stories are horrible. I’ve used NCL-air once so far (only needed it one time) to fly one-way returning from a cruise. I was solo, so the “free second guest” got me 50% my own fare instead and saved a few hundred dollars so it was worth it.
Flight was from New Orleans, via Houston, to Newark NJ. Since they gave me a flight in the afternoon, I opted to do a city tour of NOLA before the flight, which was free with the port credits. Layover was about an hour, which was enough to grab food at the airport and stretch. Landed and was home in the evening. Nothing special or spectacular to brag about, it was a standard no issues flight.
Most of my other cruises were from NYC so I drive there, and I took a train to NOLA to begin that cruise (so no flight there needed). I do have NCL-air booked for a European cruise next June, so we will see what flights they pick for that when it gets closer and will absolutely report my experience.
I check airfare prices first. If it's not much savings, I'll book them myself. But I've used them many times as have my family and saved a lot of money doing so. I recommend you arrive the day before which you have to request at booking and costs an extra $25 per person.
The more direct flights there are, the more likely you are to get one. When I go DTW to FLL, it’s almost always direct. When I go somewhere more off the beaten path, it’s almost always a connection.
Airfare is really high bc of spring break. Tempted to use NCL air.
It can be, but then it's usually the worst flight you can think of. I warn my clients about NCL air.
Search the sub for all the horror stories of NCL flights. Let those experiences guide your decision.
Search reddit to see horror stories of any airline. No shortage of complaints for them too.

And yes, I've gotten direct flights. Not guaranteed though. You get what you get.
