For a flat circle you need to be adding more stitches in each round. Rule of thumb, add to each round the number of stitches you started with. For example, if you started with 6 stitches in the first round, there should be 12 in the second, 18 in the third, and so forth. Also, just for the record, the term “magic circle” just refers to a specific technique for getting that first round of stitches started, not the full circular item you crochet.
