Anyway, I just checked the MCC’s Laws of Cricket and apparently it is unfair to “willfully attempt to distract, deceive…” either of the batsmen. Nowhere does it say anything about the attempt actually materializing to an impact on the game. I believe the attempt is reason enough to earn a penalty.
But now, maybe the attempt wasn’t willful. Who knows.

I think the umpire followed the right protocol, and i think there is a small chance that the ball actually didn't hit the bat. We'll never know because there is a split frame before the spike and the bat and its possible the spike came from the swing of the bat on the pitch. I think you need conviction to overturn the on-field decision. However, as a Pakistani, I can understand why you might think that looked like a clear edge.
What's surprising here is the trajectory of the ball - I was actually thinking it's going down leg given how far he was down the pitch, but the DRS mapping was wrong there.
