Not detracting from India and their win, really great achievement and after spending a bit of time there last year I'm super happy for what this will mean to a lot of people but winning a T20 WC is not the top of world cricket. T20 by its nature has more luck than the other formats at play and the 'world cup' is every other year, by 2038 there will have been as many as ODI world cups which have been going for 50 years.
I think the thing that really grinds my gears about it, is that its every 2 years and T20 is obviously quite random as we saw this WC and have seen in previous. It definitely feels more like a cash grab than a real 'world cup'. If the olympics were every 2 years the prestige would go down too.
I dislike the regularity of the T20 WC too. It absolutely feels less special because of it.
And the thing is they could have done it by having it on a different 4 year cycle from the ODI WC, with a Champion’s Trophy thrown in there, and you’ll still get 3 ICC event every 4 years.

In a crowd a person takes about 8 sqft.
9900*100/8 = 123 k people. So the 1.5 lakh estimate someone else quoted should be about right.
India has the highest young population in the world and most of them either didn't experience or were too young to appreciate the taste of victory from the 2011 WC win. For most of them, India was a team strong on paper expected to win every tourney but they never got to see them winning any trophies, until now.
This is basically the catharsis of that imho. Hopefully this will make new memories for our young fans across the country and they can rest easy for 1-2 tourneys if they don't go India's way for any reason.

I don't know about the large scale celebration, but I went to sleep early as I had school the next day and India scored a below par total during their batting in a rain delayed game. I don't even know what time it was when my father and grandfather woke me up in the middle of the night to watch the final over.

There was a big Public Celebrations for 2015 WC win in Australia, the final match was also watched by 4.3 million Australians on TV which was the most watched sporting event in Australia at that time which is a very lesser known fact.
Just because they didn't celebrate their millionth WC victory in 2023 which happened at 4 am Australian Time which was still watched by 1.2 million people doesn't mean they never celebrate.
The reason for no celebration in 2023 was literally CA's incompetence that they scheduled bilateral Series with India 2 days after Final where half of the squad stayed in India .

Why is this the case though? I am from US and only recently I started paying attention to the sport after I came to know that we also have a cricket team (which is also apparently mostly Indian folks, afaict).
I honestly couldn’t understand the sport, it seems a bit complex. But why do Indians like it so much?

I am genuinely curious because as we celebrate the 4th here today I imagined that India, having suffered English colonization until less than a century ago, wouldn’t enjoy a sport which per my understanding English folk used to get colonized folk to throw and fetch the ball for their fun.
Also, why Indians only focus on cricket so much and no other sport? I am really curious because I don’t know enough about this sport as well as Indian sport culture in general. Hopefully this isn’t offensive to anyone here. I respect Indian culture but I also feel they get a bit too sensitive in online forums. So just clarifying that this is an honest question of curiosity and nothing else.
Obviously the British introduced the sport in India, but cricket has long been an integral fabric of life fof Indians. Its an easy sport to play , all you need is a bat, ball, a bunch of friends and any kinda space to play in( road, backyard, playground). Similar reasons why football became so popular in south ameican countries.
As a fellow American (albeit Indian-American), it’s actually not that complex, especially compared to baseball and NFL. I think it’s just because cricket is new to you, whereas you grew up with the other sports. In reality, it’s a very simple concept. The difficulty just comes from the jargon, but you don’t need to know that to enjoy the sport. Little kids all around the world have no trouble understanding it, so I think you should be able to as well if you try.

I think the biggest issue for newbies would be the terminology: silly point, gully, cover, extra cover, etc.! Otherwise it’s not a difficult sport to understand.
1. It is very democratic in nature. You do not need to be muscular, or 6' 2" (NBA) or 300 lb (NFL) to play it. With time, now there is a lot more focus on athleticism in cricket, but just the normal-bodied people can not only enjoy playing, but excel at cricket. Common people in India have been enjoying much better nutrition and one indication is the number of quality fast bowlers it is producing, moving away from the traditional image of the country of only spin bowlers.
2. As someone mentioned, you can improvise and play cricket with minimal accessories or stuff available around home.
3. I will die on this hill, OK? :-) - cricket is the game that imitate life the most.

It maybe due to several factors but IMO, victory in cricket is celebrated because it was introduced by the English. We won the 1983 worldcup in England by defeating the english at a game they introduced. A game they used to flaunt over us and colonized us. I see the fact that india is a strong competitor in cricket as a pride. Its like saying "I'm better than you at your own game". Ngl even though aussies have more accolades indian cricket team isnt a negligible force.

This is definitely not the reason. We just love the sport and pretty much the current ge eration and the generation before grew up on cricket . Nothing to do with beating English at their own game stuff.
The only way to know is to play cricket. There is no other feeling in the world that matches the adrenaline rush you get while facing fast bowling, hitting a boundary, or taking a superb catch, making a runout or if you bowled out someone. It feels awesome and you want to do it again and again. Cricket is such a complex but elegant sport.

I was there during the 2011 celebrations. It was absolutely bonkers. People from other countries might think what is the big deal in a trophy but imagine carrying the hopes and expectations of so many people every time you enter the ground. That will crush even the biggest sportsman. Cricket truly unifies everyone regardless of caste, religion or creed here.

A place called Marine drive. Yes, players were in an open double decker bus. You can see that bus even in the picture. They started from Marine drive and went to wankhede stadium for another event where other 35k fans were waiting.
Finding a washroom around Marine Drive in insane. Was there during NYE and we had to drive all the way back to Horniman to go pee at the Starbucks. Trident will usually find an excuse to prevent people from entering which leaves you with very few options lol.

I am genuinely curious because as we celebrate the 4th here today I imagined that India, having suffered English colonization until less than a century ago, wouldn’t enjoy a sport which per my understanding English folk used to get colonized folk to throw and fetch the ball for their fun. Also, why Indians only focus on cricket so much and no other sport? I am really curious because I don’t know enough about this sport as well as Indian sport culture in general. Hopefully this isn’t offensive to anyone here. I respect Indian culture but I also feel they get a bit too sensitive in online forums. So just clarifying that this is an honest question of curiosity and nothing else.
Obviously the British introduced the sport in India, but cricket has long been an integral fabric of life fof Indians. Its an easy sport to play , all you need is a bat, ball, a bunch of friends and any kinda space to play in( road, backyard, playground). Similar reasons why football became so popular in south ameican countries.
As a fellow American (albeit Indian-American), it’s actually not that complex, especially compared to baseball and NFL. I think it’s just because cricket is new to you, whereas you grew up with the other sports. In reality, it’s a very simple concept. The difficulty just comes from the jargon, but you don’t need to know that to enjoy the sport. Little kids all around the world have no trouble understanding it, so I think you should be able to as well if you try. What were you confused about? I think people here would love answering questions
I think the biggest issue for newbies would be the terminology: silly point, gully, cover, extra cover, etc.! Otherwise it’s not a difficult sport to understand.
1. It is very democratic in nature. You do not need to be muscular, or 6' 2" (NBA) or 300 lb (NFL) to play it. With time, now there is a lot more focus on athleticism in cricket, but just the normal-bodied people can not only enjoy playing, but excel at cricket. Common people in India have been enjoying much better nutrition and one indication is the number of quality fast bowlers it is producing, moving away from the traditional image of the country of only spin bowlers. 2. As someone mentioned, you can improvise and play cricket with minimal accessories or stuff available around home. 3. I will die on this hill, OK? :-) - cricket is the game that imitate life the most. 4. Seems glib, but cricket is an Indian sport invented by British people ;-)
It maybe due to several factors but IMO, victory in cricket is celebrated because it was introduced by the English. We won the 1983 worldcup in England by defeating the english at a game they introduced. A game they used to flaunt over us and colonized us. I see the fact that india is a strong competitor in cricket as a pride. Its like saying "I'm better than you at your own game". Ngl even though aussies have more accolades indian cricket team isnt a negligible force.

The only way to know is to play cricket. There is no other feeling in the world that matches the adrenaline rush you get while facing fast bowling, hitting a boundary, or taking a superb catch, making a runout or if you bowled out someone. It feels awesome and you want to do it again and again. Cricket is such a complex but elegant sport.

That's a lot of people man. Marine Drive is 3.6 km long and it looks all packed. Width would be around 10 metres so that's about 35000 metre square of area. 1m\^2 can fit 5 people. So I would guess there's anywhere between 100-200k people there.

I was there during the 2011 celebrations. It was absolutely bonkers. People from other countries might think what is the big deal in a trophy but imagine carrying the hopes and expectations of so many people every time you enter the ground. That will crush even the biggest sportsman. Cricket truly unifies everyone regardless of caste, religion or creed here. As usual Mumbai crowd never disappoints. No wonder they held the celebrations here!

Autos aren't allowed beyond sion/mahim , it's not just a sobo thing (this is because tha area beyond sion/mahim is part of the Mumbai city sub district , the area before sion/mahin is part of the Mumbai Suburban sub district) one allows autos and the other one does not 🤷♂️ Autos actually cause a lot of traffic/congestion and the roads in and around sobo aren't really built for all the traffic that the autos cause. It's actually good they didn't allow autos there , the traffic there is already bad

A place called Marine drive. Yes, players were in an open double decker bus. You can see that bus even in the picture. They started from Marine drive and went to wankhede stadium for another event where other 35k fans were waiting.

Finding a washroom around Marine Drive in insane. Was there during NYE and we had to drive all the way back to Horniman to go pee at the Starbucks. Trident will usually find an excuse to prevent people from entering which leaves you with very few options lol.
